newsletter September 2017
Team 2018 Revolve NTNU 2018 consists of 77 members working on two projects. We have increased our membership number by 30% compared to last year’s team. This year we are taking on a driverless vehicle (DV) project in addition to building a new electric vehicle (EV). The EV project is our core competence and this year’s EV will be our fifth electric racecar. For the DV project we are working to make last year’s car ELD driverless.

RACE CAR IN MINIATURE: The radio controlled car will be the test platform for the driverless groups
Going driverless This summer Formula Student introduced the Driverless vehicle (DV) project as a new class in the competition. We have chosen to take on this extra challenge. Autonomous systems are expected to be defining for the transport industry in the near future and they represent exciting new fields of technology. Dagens Næringsliv recently mentioned, in the article “The driverless future is already here”, that by 2035,
”
12 million self-driving cars will be sold annually *. In the same article the author points out that our main sponsors, Kongsberg and Bertel O. Steen, are invested in driverless technology development. This is assuring because it supports the idea that DV is worth betting on.

Bootcamp To start off the season, all members took part in a twoweek intensive introduction to all aspects of Revolve NTNU and what the new season has in store. We were given a crash course on all the technical disciplines. To present additional theory and insight we were visited by professionals. This gave us a better grasp of what will be important in the upcoming season. Revealing how much is expected may have been daunting for some of us. There is a big gap of knowledge that separates experiences alumnus and new members. It has been
a humbling experience, but also an insightful one, as it has given us a better understanding of what we all stand to gain by taking part of this demanding project. One of the highlights of the Bootcamp was the weekend trip to Røros. We stayed at what once was a copper mine, now turned into a cabin big enough to house the entire team. Friendships were established at the breakfast table, during competitions and various activities throughout the evenings.
BRAINSTORMING: The marketing team actively use methods like this to think out of the box
Moving in During the last few weeks, Team 18 has been settling into our offices Cairo and Tibet. We are already quite busy and there is rarely an empty desk. Nevertheless, we do find time for socialising. Plenty of time is spent
in the common room, either lounging on the sofas or playing table tennis. The kiosk is frequently used and greatly appreciated, especially on late work nights.
THE START OF A LONG WEEKEND: In total over 20 hours was spent in this lecture hall over 2 days
Concept Review The concept review is the first big milestone of every season. It is an event where present and former members gather to evaluate and discuss this year’s goals and how they will be met. Every present member explains what they are working on and presents the possible design options. The ideas are presented weighing different aspects which are of overall importance; weight, reliability, complexity and so on. With these indicators in mind, individual
The way forward After this hectic period we are finally ready to focus on designing our new electric vehicle, turning Eld into a driverless vehicle and making Revolve NTNU even greater. The enthusiasm and eagerness to learn has never been stronger. As we enter the design phase of the project we are all looking forward to another exciting month of new challenges and accomplishments.
team members defend their final choice and how they plan to realise it. After the presentation, all aspects are picked apart, critiqued and evaluated based on previous experiences. All in all, a time-consuming affair, but essential to the design process. This is where former Revolve NTNU members shine and keep on improving the project that they once lived and breathed.
