FROM THE PUBLISHERS

photographers responded with submissions for our 7th Annual Revue Photo Issue, and what an assortment of wonderful, beautiful, amusing, touching and creative images we received. Again this year it was extremely diffucult choosing only one from each photographer, and we will be publishing some of the extras over the next few months. Our heart-felt thanks go out to all the photographers who took the time to share their art with us. All of us at Revue hope you enjoy these photographic treasures and that your new year is full of joy and beauty. —John & Terry Kovick Biskovich To photograph is to hold one’s breath, when all faculties converge to capture fleeting reality. It’s at that precise moment that mastering an image becomes a great physical and intellectual joy. —Henri Cartier-Bresson

QUESTION: Someone told us that you can predict the weather by following a specific monthly calendar pattern. While scientific prediction of the weather dates back to Aristotle (384 BC – 322 BC), the word cabañuelas, a system of weather forcasting, is derived from a Jewish tradition established in southern Spain in 1450. Country folk predicted the weather beginning in the month of August. The weather on the 1st represented, in general, the weather prediction for the month of August, August 2 matches the weather in September; August 3, the forecast for October ... and so forth. In Mexico and Guatemala cabañuelas are tracked starting on the first day of the New Year, January 1=January; January 2=February and then all the way through January 12=December. The cabañuela de vuelta are even more fun! Going forward and backward, January 13=December; January 14=November through January 24=and back to the month of January. Then, we start again with January 25=January/February; January 26th=March/April ... then back to January 30th=November/December. To complete the full cycle, on January 31st, there is another cycle. Many old time Guatemalan farmers continue to follow the cabañuelas! revuemag.com « 29
