pril and Semana Santa start off together this year. There will be processions and traditional celebrations throughout the country finishing on the 8th with Easter Sunday. A schedule for the major processions in Antigua is on page 72, and we will continue to post procession maps on our Revue Facebook page. The theme for the Revue Photo Contest this month was “Semana Santa,” and once again we had some great entries. You can see the winning photographs inside and the rest you can see on our website. For next month’s contest the theme is “Mothers.” A year after its restoration, Las Fuentes Georginas is looking good. Located near Quetzaltenango, this highland spa can be your headquarters for exploring the area. Matt Bokor and Thor Janson give us some insight on what to do there. The folkloric festival in Jocotán will be held on the 26th, 27th and 28th this month. Kathy Rousso explains how you can learn more about the Maya Ch’orti’ if you get to the Chiquimula area. Phil Jones gives a great overview of some interesting things happening in the April skies if you are up for some stargazing. Anna-Claire Bevan interviews an up-andcoming musician. Dr. Hellmuth introduces us to the Stingless Bees of the Maya. The question asked by Sri and Kira is whether technology is our servant or master. Las Fuentes Georginas An Historic Spa in the Highlands

hether seeking therapeutic relief or a scenic, relaxing getaway, visitors again can enjoy the thermal pools of Las Fuentes Georginas in Guatemala’s Western Highlands near Quetzaltenango. Severely damaged by Hurricanes Mitch in 1998 and Stan in 2005, the historic attraction was ruined in 2010 by Tropical Storm Agatha, which destroyed the access road and buried the site in mud and debris. After nine months of substantial rebuilding and new construction, the scenic venue reopened in March 2011. The mist-shrouded spa offers guests an almost-surreal experience as steaming water cascades down a wall of rock, filling the

first, wide pool. From there, the water flows into another pool, and then another—each a little cooler than the previous. It’s common to see parents with kids, young couples and older patrons enjoying the pools. Occasionally, crutches are left beside the bathhouse while their owners immerse themselves in the soothing, mineral-rich water. After workers from nearby Zunil stumbled upon the thermal springs in 1902, the site quickly became a communal bath for neighboring villagers. Improvements were made over the years; in the 1930s, frequent visitors included President Jorge Ubico and his wife Georgina, for whom the destination was named. ...continued page 94

Stingless Bees of the Maya

y first encounter with stingless bees came at age 19, when I spent 12 months at Tikal, doing archaeological field work. You see and experience stingless bees in most of the wellpreserved Maya palaces, especially the back rooms of Maler’s Palace. About 47 years later, I revisited stingless bees at Tikal while studying the biodiversity of Tikal under national park staff biologist Mirtha Cano. A year later it was possible to study more stingless bees in the Río Dulce area of the Department of Izabal. I was introduced by Kevin Lock to several places where we could study these bees, especially on the property of Richard Bronson. I also became ac18

quainted with Scott Forsythe who, in turn, introduced me to Masaki, a Japanese lady who has stingless bees in the property at her posada in Quiriguá. Stingless bees are also doing well at Finca Buenos Aires, Takalik Abaj with Ing. Carlos Guzman, a member of the Asociación de Reservas Privadas de Guatemala. Our staff members noticed stingless bees building their typical entrance tube right in front of the FLAAR ethnobotany and ethnozoological research center (at 1,500 meters elevation in Guatemala). At the FLAAR facilities we raise butterflies, using no cages or anything artificial. The secret? Don’t use insecticide in your garden. nyone who listens to music radio in Guatemala will no doubt be familiar with the name Soapbox. The talented musician had a No. 1 hit with his first solo single Time, and his second release, Now I’m Gone, looks to be heading in a similar direction. But not everyone may be aware that the man behind the name, Rodrigo Rosales, is a home-grown, Guatemalan star who does everything (down to directing his own music videos) himself. “I think that being in a group can sometimes be restrictive,” Rosales says. “But if you’re a one-man band, you don’t have to limit yourself.” The Guatemalan artist says he has always been inspired by musicians who played multiple instruments and guitarists who challenged the conventional approach to performance. “When I was 13 years old I saw a (televi20

sion) special on Jimi Hendrix and it blew my mind,” Rosales says. From that day forward Rosales admits only wanting to perform in a similar style. So, having learned to play the guitar when he was 11, Rosales later taught himself to play the drums and piano before building a recording studio in his room and teaching himself all elements of production. “I used to lock myself away and just focus on my music. I didn’t go out much; I just practiced in my room and was a bit of a loner… but I guess it’s starting to pay off now,” laughs Rosales. Even though the musician has appeared on four albums from other artists in the past year, he professes that the Guatemalan music industry isn’t an easy one to crack. “You need to have someone in there. This year the folkloric festival is celebrated April 26-28 and the feria is July 21-25

nterested in Mayan culture and want to check out a lesser-known region of Guatemala? Thinking about visiting the ruins of Copán? You can combine a trip to Copán, Honduras, with a stop in Jocotán, Chiquimula, Guatemala, and learn more about the Maya Ch’orti’. The Ch’orti’ are related culturally and linguistically to the lowland Maya of Yucatán and Belize (Chol) rather than the highland Maya of Guatemala (Quiche-Pokam); scholars agree that ancestors of the Ch’orti’ built the Copán (Honduras) and Quiriguá (Guatemala) structures.

Jocotán is situated in the middle of the Ch’orti’ homeland, located just off a paved highway between the department capital of Chiquimula and the Honduran border crossing of El Florido. This community hosts a yearly feria honoring Saint Santiago (July 21-25) and a regional folkloric festival (April 26-28). The latter was initiated by Jocotán teachers in 1986 as a way to highlight Ch’orti’ culture, and activities include dance, music, procession and a handicraft market, as well as the election of Katu Suchij or Reyna o Flor de Maguey (Queen or Flower of Maguey). But eventually he started to receive support from local artists, helping to propel his music onto the radio. Like most successful Guatemalan performers, Rosales funds his music through another career. He works as a furniture designer during the week and spends his spare time writing songs and trying to get the best sound possible out of his equipment. Having grown up listening to music in English, Rosales says it was a natural decision to sing in English, but the musician still con32

siders his voice his weakest instrument. “I’m not used to being a frontman, I feel more confident playing the guitar than singing. But I have to get used to it, and now I guess there’s no turning back. “My greatest challenge has always been myself. I was afraid at the beginning and didn’t have much confidence so I’ve had to overcome that,” says Rosales, who originally called himself “Soapbox.” “When I was growing up, people used to dismiss local bands and I thought that if I put my name out there I would get rejected, so I used the pseudonym ‘Soapbox’,” admits Rosales. Although Rosales has toured with bands and composed songs for other musicians, he is now focusing on his solo career. His selfwritten, first album Soapbox Vol. 1 is out now in local music stores. he clean, crisp, fresh, familiar scent of pine, from long and short needles gathered and bundled to be scattered on shop and café floors, is an aroma found yeararound in Guatemala businesses and homes. This month more than ever, pine forms a large part of the rich odors of the Lenten season. Before the scores of processions wind through cobbled streets, pine needles are spread to soften the marchers’ tread. Needles are often a base for the alfombras, the intricate carpets of flowers and sawdust, or lovingly placed in green rectangles as a simple adoration before the passing saints. The delicate scent of carpet needles is overpowered by smoke in the processions. Pine resins are concentrated into hard balls of pom, pitch, providing the heavy smudge from incense burners swung vigorously in front of the processions. You will smell it again when you next undress, your clothing saturated with the pine incense. And taste pine. Those who head to the hills to gather needles and resins also pick up cones that yield nuts, roasted and munched alone or mixed into salads, stews and other flavorful dishes.

Want to paint? Artists need scores of shades on the palette to properly paint the trees of Highland forests or pine products in the processions. Green pine needles, golden pine pitch, light brown pine nuts, coffee colored pine bark, scores of shades are necessary to picture pine. Pine is the most common tree in the world, we’re told by arborists, with more than 100 species on six continents. Two varieties are native to Guatemala and Central America, the long-needled Montezuma Pine and the somewhat shorter needles of Honduras Pine, the national tree of our neighboring country. Recent studies suggest both varieties developed many millennia ago in the Cuchumatanes mountains of Guatemala, then spread north into Mexico and south to Nicaragua, but we won’t let our Honduran friends down by telling them where their national tree originated. Pine scents, pine shades, pine nut taste, the sticky touch of pine pitch, soft needles underfoot, pine easily reaches four out of five senses. Add sound, the crackle of pine logs in a fireplace, and pine is a delight for all our senses.

he rains will be starting soon and the burning in the fields may make for some viewing difficulties, but there will still be some good stargazing in the region in the next few months. Binoculars can help the viewing but there is no need for a telescope until you get hooked on the stars. In early April the bright evening “stars” are really the planets Jupiter and Venus, one above the other and fairly low in the western sky just after sunset. Venus is brighter and higher while Jupiter is closer to the horizon and not as brilliant. Immediately above and to the left of Venus is the star Aldebaran, a red-colored star that is the eye of the bull at the start of the horns of the constellation Taurus. During this month Venus will continue to rise while the rest of the stars and Jupiter will be closer to the horizon at sunset, so that by the end of April Venus will be higher than Aldebaran and Jupiter gradu-

ally becomes lost in the horizon’s haze or surrounding hills at sunset. Meanwhile, in early April the moon will be in the eastern sky at sunset and on the 6th will just be rising as the sun sets: a full moon. The planet Mars will be immediately to the left (north) of the moon on April 3 but will be somewhat washed out by the moon’s bright reflected sunlight. Three of the more interesting celestial objects are in the early evening sky this month: the constellations Orion (the hunter) and Taurus (the bull) and the asterism (group of stars) called the Pleiades or the Seven Sisters. On April 3 Venus will be right in among the Pleiades. In Japanese the Pleiades are called Subaru, and the star group is part of the Subaru car insignia, reflecting the joining of six different companies to form Fuji Heavy Industries after World War II. months. The smallest constellation, the Southern Cross, will be visible low on the southern horizon around midnight in late April, and into May in the early evening. It is called the Cruz de Mayo in these parts, and I will always remember the first time I ever saw it, from the beach at Tulate on the south coast some 45 years ago. Stephen Stills said it all with his song of the same name. It does indeed look like a small cross with a bright star at each end of the upright and the slanted cross bar but with no star in the middle joint. It looks more like a child’s kite. A dimmer star on the lower right side completes the bright stars of this amazingly beautiful constellation. This smaller and dimmer side star is shown on the Australian flag but not on New Zealand’s. Looking straight north in the early evening the asterism called the Big Dipper is easily visible with its distinctive long-handled ladle shape, now upside down pouring out its liquid onto the North Star, which is a faint star and probably not visible in the haze just above the northern horizon. the countryside, we would raise a veritable zoo. In part, my enjoyment of bees is watching them build their entrance-exit tube and seeing them hover in front of the hive, getting ready to dive down the tube. It makes me think of sci-fi movies with alien spaceships, fighter planes and helicopter-like scout planes hovering around the entrance port to the mother ship. Aside from images of bees and alien worlds, for thousands of years bees were an important economic aspect of Classic Maya civilization. And beekeeping is still important in Maya areas today, though unfortunately modern bees tend to replace indigenous species more and more every year. The more common species of stingless bees are very tiny. You will recognize these little bees in many flower-filled gardens. 66

Mirta Cano has shown me that several species make their nest in the ground, so merely walking around can destroy their habitat. Though these bees are stingless, they will attack if they feel threatened. The only time it happened to me was when my head was in the flight path of their hive (I was concentrating on photographing another hive about one meter below, on the same tree). When stingless bees get irritated, they dive into your head and burrow down through your hair and pester the daylights out of your scalp. They also buzz around your eyes and ears, but mainly it’s your scalp that gets the full bore of their wrath. What to do: Get away from their hive, immediately! And never wave your hands or arms to fend them off. The bees in front of my house are accustomed to people walking around them all day. My guess is that these bees are simply used to the presence of people. This hive seems to have learned that we will neither attack them nor even disrupt them. I hope this article raises awareness of stingless bees. We at FLAAR institute would be interested in working on projects if your company or foundation could provide funding. We would especially like to raise awareness throughout Guatemala in providing protection for stingless bees, and not obliterating them with insecticides nor cutting down the trees where some species make their hives. ...continued page 68 Dr. Nicholas M. If you are a biologist and wish to do research on stingless bees in Petén, contact the Parque Nacional Tikal. Biologist Mirta Cano (nicholas hellmuth ) would be a good starting point. If you are a visitor to Guatemala, most local guides in Petén should be able to find you stingless bee hives, especially in Tikal. If you are in the Sayaxché area of El Petén, you can ask Julián Mariona of Posada El Caribe if he can find you stingless bees. You can buy honey from stingless bees at Macaw Mountain a few kilometers from Copán Ruinas, Honduras (info@macawmountain.com).

e use a 21 megapixel Canon EOS-1Ds Mark III with a macro lens, either a 100mm macro or a Canon MP-E 65mm 1-5X macro lens. The latter is the best macro lens I have ever found for photographing insects, but you need eternal patience to get the lens close enough to focus. It helps to have a ring flash or macro flash to allow you to freeze the flying bees so they are not too blurred in the photograph. Since bees move rapidly bees are best photographed with HDSLR video, which means a high definition, single lens reflex camera (which means a camera where you can change your lenses, so ironically a camera which takes many lenses, not just one single lens). We look forward to obtaining a brand new Canon EOS-1D X which is a pro-level camera but has video capabilities significantly better than any Canon Rebel or Nikon D-hundred series system. Who is Santo Hermano Pedro?

an Francisco Church in Antigua celebrates the anniversary of Santo Hermano Pedro’s death (1667) on April 25 with concerts and fireworks. An allegorical procession goes throughout the streets of Antigua after the 2 p.m. mass on Sunday, April 29. Hermano Pedro de San José Betancur was born on March 21, 1626, in Vilafor on the island of Tenerife in the Canary Islands. After working as a shepherd until his early 20s, he set out for Guatemala, hoping to find a relative there. First arriving in Havana, Cuba, practically penniless, he earned money to travel to Antigua (then known as Santiago de Guatemala). As he entered Antigua, there was an earthquake—which may contribute to Antiguans considering a small earthquake to be a welcome today. Enrolling in the Jesuit College of San Borja (Compañía de Jesus) to become a priest, he could not master the material and was not able to graduate. He then became a Franciscan tertiary and took the name Pedro de San José. While visiting the sick in hospitals, jails and in their homes, he later founded the first hospital for the convalescent poor at Belen in Antigua. This included a shelter for the 74

homeless, schools for the poor, a chapel and an inn for priests. He also founded the first order of the Bethlemites, who have been influential in Guatemala. Hermano Pedro is well known for establishing the Christmas posada processions and the nativity scenes that have flourished in Guatemala in most Catholic homes. Buried at San Francisco Church, he was beatified on June 22, 1980. When I asked Fray Augusto Ramirez, the Franciscan priest in charge of commissioning the sculpture and robe for the procession we enjoy every year, he said, “Hermano Pedro represents humility and helping others.” Hermano Pedro became a saint when Pope John Paul II canonized him on July 30, 2002. His works are carried out today through the Obras Sociales del Hermano Pedro at the hospital (6a calle oriente #20) where Franciscans, Guatemalan doctors and nurses work with medical teams from countries including Spain, Canada and the United States. Founded by Fray Guillermo Bonilla in 1984 at the San Pedro Hospital that dates back to 1663, the Obras serves more than 260,000 patients a year. This is a great time to donate to the Obras as it celebrates Santo Hermano Pedro Day. Donations are received at the hospital entrance.

Question: I have a 2-year-old blue-headed Amazon parrot who is a great talker, but I am not comfortable with the type of parrot food that I can buy. Sometimes it smells musty and the ingredients seem to stick together. He now eats mostly sunflower seeds. What do you suggest? Answer: It sounds like he needs a diet overhaul. Remember to carefully monitor his total food consumption during a diet change and introduce very small pieces of a single new food at a time. Gradually reduce the total volume of seed offered as consumption of other foods increases. Most diets for pet birds are commonly deficient in Vitamin A. Try offering cups of fresh food twice daily for 15-20 minutes rather than leaving food in the cage all day. All food and water cups should be washed daily and spilled food removed from the cage. Supplemental vitamins/minerals may be recommended by your veterinarian. Also some foods can occasionally help provide sources of activity for your parrot: whole nuts, berries, corn on the cob, coconuts. Approximately 50% of the daily food consumption may be selected from this food group that includes seeds. Because many B vitamins are contained in the seed hulls (which the bird does not eat), other foods from this group can also be provided: whole-grain bread, cooked brown rice, other whole grain products. Vegetables and fruits may account for approximately 45% of the dietary intake. Vegetables with high vitamin A content include broccoli, carrots, pumpkin, collard greens, sweet potato, parsley, endive. Fruits high in vitamin A include papaya, cantaloupe and apricots. Many owners add peanut butter, hard-boiled (or scrambled) eggs, cooked navy beans and kidney beans in limited amounts. The more seeds in the diet, the higher need for supplementary calcium, this is most easily met by mineral supplements in the form of cuttlebone, oyster shell and mineral blocks. A very small amount of hard cheese is fine.

Many visitor are not aware that Fuentes Georginas is also the entrance to the municipal forest reserve and for those who want to climb Zuníl Volcano. From the restaurant and main pool a path leads up into the forest. An hour or so climb takes you into true cloud forest where you may get a glimpse of the endangered resplendent quetzal. For nature lovers and bird watchers I would recommend a mid-week overnight stay to take full advantage of this beautiful, cloud-enshrouded forest. After your strenuous hike doing some primo bird watching and nature viewing you have the added treat of soaking your weary bones in the medicinal hot sulfur waters. And if you really want to cure what ails you—if anything indeed does—do what the locals do and sip a little of the magic water directly from the rocks where it emerges. They are among 46 winners from around the world to receive The Billfish Foundation’s 2011 Tag & Release Awards. Since 1990 they’ve become the heart and soul of TBF’s eminent conservation program committed to tag and release of billfish from the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Oceans, while supplying valuable data critical to learning the pelagic species migratory habits. Guatemala’s Brad Philipps was TBF’s Top Release Captain in the Pacific Ocean in both the blue marlin and sailfish categories. A past multi-time winner, Philipps also won a third major award as the overall release captain for all species in the 22nd annual competition. 96

The TBF Annual Tag and Release Awards, presented during the Miami International Boat Show each February, is the world’s premier big-game fishing competition, with thousands of TBF member anglers and captains from 70 countries invited to compete. The 2011 competition ran from Nov. 1, 2010 to Oct. 31, 2011 with “tagging data reports” and “release notification cards” generated from the ocean’s temperate waters, habitat for a majority of the world’s billfish. To qualify active TBF members must have tagged and/or released five or more of a species. TBF still has the highest recapture rates for a traditional tagging program thanks in big part to the efforts from the sport-fishing community. And the release category, which began nine years ago, has logged in over 66,000 billfish releases reported to TBF.
