For those who are looking forward to viewing the many processions in La Antigua Guatemala or for locals trying to avoid the traffic, we hope you find the Semana Santa Processional Route maps useful. In step with the spirit of Semana Santa, Elizabeth Bell takes us behind the scenes with artist Josué Romero in Master Artists Working on Lenten Spendor. Ken Veronda highlights Andas and beckons us to use all of our senses during this vibrant season. Our profile is a visual depiction of how a Cucurucho spends his Good Friday in A Day in the Life by photographer Katrin Neuhaus. Amalia Moreno-Damgaard invites everyone to share a heartwarming experience with her as she celebrates with friends and food in Guatemalan Hospitality at its Best, and as always she includes a yummy recipe. This one is for Frijoles Volteados. In an homage to some of the 440 species of birds that have been reported on, over and around Lake Atitlán, a big shout out to Clive Rainey for his article the Bird Art Museum, and also much appreciation to Richard Rivera creator of the museum. Master Artists Working on Lenten Splendor

he celebration of Lent in La Antigua Guatemala has become the largest in the word over recent years – yes, larger than Seville, Spain – and the Antigüeño artists have certainly contributed to this!

Decorations for the velaciones – holy vigils held in the church before each procession representing the garden that Jesus visited before crucifixion – have become increasingly incredible, as have the amazing andas – processional floats – that change decorations from year to year. Who is behind the scenes creating these works of art? Several main artistic groups work on designs, which are presented to the different hermandades (church brother-

hoods) for approval months in advance. Many groups will bid for the same velacion or procession. Escuela Altar-Era, with talented artists including Josue Romero, the Calderon family and other anda experts, is working on the San Felipe velaciones and floats for the Good Friday procession. It is one of the largest with thousands of carriers. Isaac Juarez’s group is also one of Guatemala’s most outstanding artistic teams, as is Oscar Valle’s group, for 2018 Lent and Holy Week.

Groups sign a strict “top-secret” clause in their contracts to keep everyone’s anticipation at its height. Changing from year to year, the designs and biblical messages for 2018 will be exciting to see!

Antigüeño artists have been designing velaciones and processional float decorations as early as 1808 when processions began again after the capital was moved to Guatemala City in 1774. Luis Fuentes (1950s-70s) and Mario Calderon (1980s) maintained this tradition for years.

With a new generation of artists – and tremendous competition to get the most fabulous floats and be the talk of the town – a new mode of interaction appeared about 10 years ago. Today you feel you are part of the event more than ever! In our interview with Josue Romero and Estuardo Calderon, they expressed their desire to be a part of Guatemala’s folklore and traditions in an extremely interactive, creative way. Decorations – made with materials including Styrofoam, paints, resins, gold dust and glues – do not come cheap. With more than 20 artisans working on any given design and creating Guatemala’s finest, the decorations for the Virgin Mary float may cost between Q20,000-25,000 and the Christ float between Q50,000-70,000. The funds collected by the hermandades when participants sign up cover all processional costs. Well worth the artistic investment for the most spectacular celebration in the world for Lent and Semana Santa! ll five senses are assaulted by the many sights, sounds, smells, tastes and touch of the Lenten season, throughout Guatemala but especially in La Antigua. It is an intense period of sorrow, joy, regret, celebration that fills the days with sensual emotions. The ornately colorful carpets, the funereal marches and drums, the pungent corozo and pine odors, the tostadas and churros to taste that are sold in atrios in fronts of all the churches, from Ash Wednesday through Easter Sunday, Lent is saturated with color, music, aroma, taste. And to touch the season, I urge you to touch, to sense, to feel the warm, worn woods of the 16

andas that are in every Roman Catholic Church from the great cathedrals to

simple back-country chapels. Andas are the platforms, the floats, the carved cedar wood bases that carry the religious figures and that are in turn carried by male cucuruchos and female cargadoras through the streets. Most andas aren’t very old. They must be replaced every few decades with new ones, often growing longer and heavier with each edition. Some of Antigua’s largest andas are more than 7,000 pounds, heavier than a couple of large automobiles, requiring 90 or 100 carriers plus some more hidden inside to assist with the weight, as well as a leader in front and a few pushing the andas from the back as the procession sways through town. Pre-Columbian Maya and other indigenous groups used small floats in processions long before the European Conquest, simple andas that four men could carry. The earliest Christian processions included andas carried by four to ten men, usually dressed in white and red, their faces masked and

covered until well into the 20th century. Purple tunics or robes, white gloves and the peaked purple caps are now worn by men and boys until Good Friday after the time of the Crucifixion, when many wear black. The cargadora women wear simple black dresses, sometimes today walking rather amazingly over the cobblestone streets in high heels. Processions of the sculptures of Christ and the saints happen all year, always for a particular sanctuary’s saint’s day. Beginning with the first

full moon of spring, and continuing through the 40 days (not counting Sundays) of Lent, the processions are more frequent, with major displays from Palm Sunday through Good Friday and Saturday â&#x20AC;&#x201D; and only fairly recently with a celebration of the Resurrection on Easter Sunday. Before any procession, the andas come out of storage and the platforms are decorated, as are the saints and figures on top of each float. The floats, their decorations and the processions are organized by each churchâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s hermandad, brotherhood. These organizations were called cofradias until governments fearful of church groups having power that could be disruptive, and the brotherhoods changed names. The sides of andas are carved with intricate designs, and those you should feel to sense their powers. Hermandades keep the cedar andas all year in corners of the churches. Until time for a procession, they rest and gather dust but hold their warmth and heritage. Seek them out in small and large Catholic churches, wherever you go around Guatemala. When you find an anda, feel it with your sense of touch. Reflect on the power and the emotion of the processions the float has experienced, and sense a special connection with their ceremonial heritage.

Top Three Prizes Awarded

ore than 20 up-and-coming Guatemalan artists submitted their creations for the juried exhibit Talento Crudo (Raw Talent), open through March 7 at Centro Cultural El Sitio in La Antigua Guatemala. The entire collection is also online: www.artintheamericas.net. The organizers, The Artist´s Circle and Art in The Americas, invited emerging artists to participate with the main objective of supporting them in their early careers while giving the public a glimpse of visual arts produced by Guatemalan talent. All the artists submitted high-quality, well-executed works, with very interesting proposals, themes and techniques. Three well-known critics, specializing in analyzing, interpreting and evaluating art, had the difficult task of selecting three exhibitors who deserved special acknowledgement. Awards were based on excellence in command of the medium, composition, movement, color balance, and how well the message of the piece was conveyed.

First prize was given to Alexis Rojas (photo above). Born in Huehuetenango, Rojas is a selftaught artist who majored in philosophy at the University of San Carlos in Guatemala City. Even though he has been perfecting his technique for the past two decades, only in recent years has he shown his works. Among other things, Rojas finds a fountain of inspiration in literature and philosophy. Poetry, a quote by a renowned philosopher or writer, or maybe a catchy pop song will trigger compositions that crystalize in a masterpiece. Manuel Navichoc from San Pedro La Laguna was awarded second prize. He studied art at the National School of Fine Art in Guatemala City. His work is characterized by attention paid to 28

a true representative of modern Tz´utujil art.

María Mercedes Zuñiga won third prize. Born in Guatemala, she has taken photography courses at La Fototeca, Guatemala and with renowned photogra-

phers. Zuñiga´s photographs have a direct relationship with the exploration of her inner-self. In them she tries to evoke feelings, memories or dreams, but more than portraying an image per se, she seeks to create metaphors that viewers can relate to. In her work she sets a certain atmosphere playing with the concepts of presence and absence, the past and the present. We encourage you to support the Talento Crudo artists; a portion of the proceeds from art sales will be donated to LAVOSI (Las Voces del Silencio, in Jocotenango, Sacatepéquez), an institution devoted to the betterment of the lives of the deaf. AXIMÓN- Santo o Diablo (66 min.) is a documentary about the controversial Maya deity called Maximón who personifies good and evil simultaneously. Maximón, also known as San Simón, or the drinking and smoking saint of Guatemala, is a mixture of ancient Maya beliefs and Christianity.

Director /producer Robert Flanagan explains the film’s genesis: “The mystery that surrounds Maximón played a large part in the creation of this film. Twenty-five years ago I was living in London. For no apparent reason I created a figure out of old clothes and a mask. I gave him a cowboy hat, I gave him sunglasses, I gave him a cigarette and I gave him a beer. At this point, I knew nothing about Maximón. It wasn’t until 25 years later on my first trip to Guatemala that I walked into the Casa de Maximón in Zunil where I immediately recognized the figure sitting on his throne as the same one I had constructed in London. I really had no choice but to make this film. This began our journey with Maximón.”

Guatemalan Hospitality at Its Best very time I visit Guatemala I rediscover the magic of its people. As I write this article, I find myself surrounded by spring-like weather and mesmerizing scenery in La Antigua Guatemala. As Lent approaches, I have been carefully observing the preparations for the big celebration, from the specially decorated floats and devoted volunteers signing up to carry them, to the amazing displays of dried fish and seafood at the mercado. Semana Santa in Antigua (as the locals call it)—a UNESCO World Heritage Site—is the largest and most dramatic celebration of this special Catholic season in the world. To really feel its splendor, it’s helpful to be onsite, as pictures don’t do it justice. This year Holy Week will be celebrated from March 25-31.

A few days ago, I was invited to attend a 60th birthday party celebration. Lucky me, I had been in Antigua for just a few days. My cousin Armida’s former classmate’s party was what I call Guatemalan hospitality at its best. Not only did they include me without knowing me, but the festivity incorporated welcome traditional appetizers, a well-stocked bar, a nice barbecue lunch with delicious sides, and very fitting experiences to combine the birthday celebration, Carnaval (Mardi Gras), which precedes Ash Wednesday, dancing, a piñata with party favors, raffles and fun and games.

Although piñatas may be primarily for children’s birthday parties, adults can add them too to their party agenda. The result was precious, as we took turns beating on the Flintstone’s Wilma, candy flew all around party guests. As the beating concluded, Wilma was shaken vigorously to release any remaining candy. A candy-collecting frenzy by middle-age women on all fours is priceless! Party favors included cheaters (reading glasses) and packages of candies labeled as blood pressure and cough medicine, a small container for soaking dentures, small plastic bottles labeled as Maalox, a Jell-O snack, and many more fun items commonly used by aging folks. The meal was prepared by the party girl’s younger son, who impressed me with his cooking skills despite not being an experienced cook. As we sat at a table harvest style, I joined the nicest group of women classmates who had all graduated from the school of pharmacy at one of the local universities. As the party went on, we proceeded to all the activities that even included a cooking challenge, where I participated. Carnaval in Guatemala is a unique experience in which children (and some adults) wear costumes and schools, as I recall it, have costume contests. The celebration is highlighted with cascarones (colorful dyed egg shells filled with confetti and sealed with glue and tissue paper). During a fun exchange, participants break the cascarones on unaware guests’ heads while bursting into loud laughs while connecting through friendly exchanges. At the end, people end up with lots of colorful pica pica (confetti) on their heads – a festive symbol. 55

Fun and games included pick a number and win a prize, gift exchanges, a small broom to “sweep” the polilla (sawdust resembling rotting wood) from the guests, and dancing around the chair contest with lively Latin tunes. Three contestants participated in the three-minute egg white fork-beating challenge. I was one of the finalists, and we broke the tie with the piedra, papel o tijera (rock, paper, scissors) children’s game. I didn’t win, but I had the time of my life. I can’t think of the last time I had this much fun in a party combining so many amusing parts highlighting middle age in such an enjoyable and unique way while embracing the special season’s events. Below is a recipe for one of the appetizers that is a staple in Guatemalan cooking.

Frijoles Volteados (Refried Black Beans)

Recipe by Chef Amalia Moreno-Damgaard (AmaliaLLC.com)

Makes 4 cups Start with 2 cups of dried black beans cooked with one whole head of onion and garlic in 5 cups of water in a crock pot set on high for 3-1/2 hours. Puree the beans in a blender. Panfry one cup of chopped yellow onions in 2 tablespoons of canola oil until medium brown. Add 1 tablespoon of minced garlic and sauté for 1 minute. Add the bean purée, season with salt, and fry the mixture over medium heat stirring frequently to prevent sticking and burning until very thick and pasty adding 4-5 tablespoons of canola oil gradually during the process. This may take up to 30 minutes. The mixture is done when the 56

beans no longer stick to the pan and can be shaped into any form. Shaping the beans into an American football-like form is the traditional way. As a boquita (appetizer), serve with corn tostadas or toasted soft corn tortillas.

ecently I stopped by the Centro Comercial San Rafael on Calle Santander in Panajachel to see the progress my friend and fellow birder, Richard Rivera, had made on his dream of creating a bird art museum. As I approached this little mall, I noticed large, beautifully hand-painted bird murals on a wall toward the back left side. Passing through these, I was immediately greeted by a widely grinning Richard, who invited me in for a tour. He opens the tour with introductory remarks relating 78

the 1740s. This method of bird classification sets the order for the tour. Moving counter clockwise around the garden, Richard shows me photos, paintings and carvings of some of the 440 species of birds that have been reported on, over and around Lake Atitlán. We start with lake and shore birds; paintings on the wall behind each grouping represent the species’ habitat. Among the photos are stunningly life-like and beautifully hand-carved models of some of these birds. As he talks about birds, Richard also talks about his larger vision for the museum—using art to teach schoolchildren the importance of birds to the local culture. If you’ve seen the beautiful huipiles of the women or the pants worn by the men of Santiago Atitlán, you have an idea how much birds mean to local culture. In the town’s church, there is even a carving on the pulpit of a quetzal reading from the Bible. Kids also learn the important role of birds in agriculture, especially in the production of organic shade-grown coffee, now so critical that the very best brands bear the “bird-friendly” label. 80

Many of the birds seen here during the northern winter are migratory birds. They spend about half the year (November through April) in Guatemala and the other half in North America, where they nest. Shade-grown coffee is considered second only to natural forests as a habitat for these species, which help control insect pests, including the coffee-borer that otherwise destroys

growth potential for Guatemala, aveturismo or bird tourism is the worldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s fastest-growing outdoor activity, generating billions of dollars annually.

the coffee beans. The concentration of birds here during the winter attracts birdwatching tourists who have an incredible opportunity to view the migrant birds much more closely here than at home. For many North American birders, the cost of a trip to Guatemala is actually more affordable than traveling elsewhere in the U.S. to see birds. Their visits support the Guatemalan economy because the tourists need guides, transportation, lodging, meals and other hospitality services. An industry with huge Kids also learn the important role of birds in agriculture.

The Bird Art Museum uses art to engage young visitors, who color in drawings of different birds, including the brilliantly plumed painted bunting, its hues so abstract that it might have been designed by a 6 year old. Kids are also introduced to the fascinating use of binoculars. A whole curriculum has been designed to help local teachers with bird-related classroom activities, which culminate with a visit to the Bird Art Museum. Students are encouraged to paint a bird mural for their school walls to increase awareness of birds and their importance to culture, agriculture and the economy, and to encourage preservation of the environment. Whether you are a student, an avid birder or just curious, the Bird Art Museum in Panajachel is worth a visit. Question: How can I determine the best dog food just by reading the label?

his is a difficult and frustrating process. Reading the label can help, but it’s difficult to judge the quality of ingredients and their digestibility. I would avoid “bulk concentrate” and food with high levels of artificial color, which is added for their appeal to humans. Some dogs can be sensitive to these dyes. It is important to choose a food that is appropriate for his/her stage in life: puppy, adult or senior. A common error is giving a high-energy adult food to a senior, which basically results in weight gain. Also important is choosing a food that your dog likes, because the best food won’t work if s/he won’t eat it. And don’t forget to ask your veterinarian for a recommendation.
