Celebrating a Legacy: Louis Gossett Jr.'s Journey from Broadway to Hollywood

In an exclusive interview with Yaya Diamond on Dream Chasers Radio, as well as xs10 magazine, we had the honor of speaking with an icon, a legend, and a trailblazer in the acting business, Mr. Louis Gossett Jr. His

journey from the stages of Broadway to the screens of Hollywood has paved the way for countless artists in the entertainment industry. Gossett Jr. shared a poignant memory from 1953 involving his great-grandmother, a photograph, and his first play, "Take a Giant Step," at the tender age of 17. This moment, captured in a photograph with his 110-year-old great-grandmother, a former slave, underscores the deep roots and rich heritage that have shaped his life and career. Gossett Jr. reflects on the full-circle moment of his life, emphasizing the divine orchestration of events and the importance of family and heritage. The conversation delved into the profound impact of Paul Robeson, a figure who adopted Gossett Jr. during his early days on Broadway. Robeson's mentorship and the lessons from Gossett Jr.'s great-grandmother instilled in him the values of discipline, family, and community—values that he believes are essential for the salvation of mankind. Gossett Jr. also touched on his upbringing in New York, a melting pot of cultures and intellects, where he grew up alongside the children of European intellectuals who fled the horrors of World War II.

A Russian Rosguardia (National Guard) servicemen secures an area as a massive blaze seen over the Crocus City Hall on the western edge of Moscow, Russia, Friday, March 22, 2024. Several gunmen have burst into a big concert hall in Moscow and fired automatic weapons at the crowd, injuring an unspecified number of people and setting a massive blaze in an apparent terror attack days after President Vladimir Putin cemented his grip on the country in a highly orchestrated electoral landslide. (AP Photo/Dmitry Serebryakov) Several assailants burst into a large concert hall in Moscow on Friday and sprayed the crowd with gunfire, killing at least 100 people, injuring more than 145 and setting fire to the venue in a brazen attack just days after President Vladimir Putin cemented his grip on power in a highly orchestrated electoral landslide.

The Islamic State group claimed responsibility for the attack in a statement posted on affiliated channels on social media, which couldn’t be independently verified. It wasn’t immediately clear what happened to the attackers after the raid, which state investigators were investigating as terrorism. The attack, which left the 6,200-capacity Crocus City Hall venue in flames with a collapsing roof, was the deadliest in Russia in years and came as the country’s war in Ukraine dragged into a third year. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin called the raid a “huge tragedy.” The Kremlin said Putin was informed minutes after the assailants burst into Crocus City Hall, a large music venue on Moscow’s western edge that can accommodate 6,200 people. Though no tour itineraries or box office reports for Crocus City Hall have been received by Pollstar since 2021, tour history data shows concerts were at least scheduled there by such Western artists as Il Divo, Tommy Emmanuel and Queen Symphonic that year. In 2018, performances were scheduled with artists including Dua Lipa, Enrique Iglesias, Lorde, Portugal. The Man and 2Cellos, among others. The attack took place as crowds gathered for a performance by the Russian rock band Picnic. As Russia’s Federal Security Service reported 40 dead and over 100 injured, some Russian news reports suggested that more could have been trapped by the blaze that erupted after the assailants threw explosives. Health authorities released a list of 145 injured — 115 of them hospitalized, including five children. Video showed the building on fire, with a huge cloud of smoke rising through the night sky. The street was lit up by the blinking blue lights of dozens of firetrucks, ambulances and other emergency vehicles, as fire helicopters buzzed overhead to dump water on the blaze that took hours to contain. The prosecutor’s office said several men in combat fatigues entered the concert hall and fired on concertgoers. Repeated volleys of gunfire could be heard in videos posted by Russian media and on Telegram channels. One showed two men with rifles moving through the venue. Another showed a man in the auditorium saying the assailants had set it on fire, as gunshots rang out incessantly in the background. Others showed up to four attackers, armed with assault rifles and wearing caps, shooting screaming people at point-blank range.

Guards at the concert hall didn’t have guns, and some could have been killed at the start of the attack, Russian media reported. Some Russian news outlets suggested the assailants fled before special forces and riot police arrived. Reports said police patrols were looking for several vehicles the attackers could have used to escape. In a statement posted by its Amaq news agency, the Islamic State group said it attacked a large gathering of “Christians” in Krasnogorsk on Moscow’s outskirts, killing and wounding hundreds. It was not immediately possible to verify the authenticity of the claim. Noting that the IS statement cast its claim as an attack targeting Christians, Aymenn Jawad al-Tamimi, an expert on the terrorist group, said it appeared to reflect the group’s strategy of “striking wherever they can as part of a global ‘fight the infidels and apostates everywhere.’” On March 7, Russia’s top security agency said it thwarted an attack on a synagogue in Moscow by an Islamic State cell, killing several of its members in the Kaluga region near the Russian capital. A few days earlier, Russian authorities said six alleged IS members were killed in a shootout in Ingushetia in Russia’s volatile Caucasus region. It was not clear why the group, which operates mainly in Syria and Iraq but also in Afghanistan and Africa, would stage an attack in Russia at this time. Over the years, the extremist group recruited fighters from the former Soviet Union who fought for the group in Syria and Iraq and has claimed several past attacks in the Caucasus and other Russian regions. As the blaze raged, statements of outrage, shock and support for those affected streamed in from around the world. Some commentators on Russian social media questioned how authorities, who relentlessly surveil and pressure Kremlin critics, failed to identify the threat and prevent the attack. Russian officials said security has been tightened at Moscow’s airports, railway stations and the capital’s sprawling subway system. Moscow’s mayor canceled all mass gatherings, and theaters and museums shut for the weekend. Other Russian regions also tightened security. The Kremlin didn’t immediately blame anyone for the attack, but some Russian lawmakers were quick to accuse Ukraine and called for ramping up strikes. Hours before the attack, the Russian military launched a sweeping barrage on Ukraine’s power system, crippling the country’s biggest hydroelectric plant and other energy facilities and leaving more than a million people without electricity. Dmitry Medvedev, deputy head of Russia’s Security Council, said that if Ukraine involvement in the attack is proven, all those involved “must be tracked down and killed without mercy, including officials of the state that committed such outrage.”

Mykhailo Podolyak, an adviser to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, denied Ukraine involvement. “Ukraine has never resorted to the use of terrorist methods,” he posted on X. “Everything in this war will be decided only on the battlefield.” John Kirby, spokesman for the White House National Security Council, said that he couldn’t yet speak about the details but “the images are just horrible. And just hard to watch.” “Our thoughts are going to be with the victims of this terrible, terrible shooting attack,” Kirby said. The attack followed a statement earlier this month by the U.S. Embassy in Moscow that urged Americans to avoid crowded places in the Russian capital in view of “imminent” plans by extremists to target large gatherings, including concerts. The warning, issued hours after Russia’s top security agency said it busted a cell of the Islamic State group preparing an attack on a synagogue, was repeated by several other Western embassies. Asked about the embassy’s March 7 notice, Kirby referred the question to the State Department, adding: “I don’t think that was related to this specific attack.” Responding to a question about whether Washington had any prior information about the assault, Kirby responded: “I’m not aware of any advance knowledge that we had of this terrible attack.” Putin, who extended his grip on Russia for another six years in this week’s presidential vote after a sweeping crackdown on dissent, denounced the Western warnings as an attempt to intimidate Russians. “All that resembles open blackmail and an attempt to frighten and destabilize our society,” he said earlier this week. Russia was shaken by a series of deadly terror attacks in the early 2000s during the fighting with separatists in the Russian province of Chechnya. In October 2002, Chechen militants took about 800 people hostage at a Moscow theater. Two days later, Russian special forces stormed the building and 129 hostages and 41 Chechen fighters died, most of them from effects of the narcotic gas Russian forces used to subdue the attackers. And in September 2004, about 30 Chechen militants seized a school in Beslan in southern Russia taking hundreds of hostages. The siege ended in a bloodbath two days later and more than 330 people, about half of them children, were killed.

Firefighters work after a fire broke out at a nightclub in Istanbul, Turkey, Tuesday, April 2, 2024. (IHA via AP) during renovations, trapping workers and employees inside and killing at least 29 people, officials and reports said. Several people, including managers of the club, were detained for questioning.

One person was being treated at a hospital with serious injuries, the Istanbul governor’s office said in a statement. The Masquerade nightclub, which was closed for renovations, was located on the ground and basement floors of a 16-story residential building in the Besiktas district on the European side of the city bisected by the Bosphorus Strait. The fire reached the third floor of the building before it was extinguished, video footage of the blaze showed. Gov. Davut Gul told reporters at the scene that the cause of the fire was under investigation and that the victims were believed to be people involved in the renovation work. The private DHA news agency identified one of the victims as a nightclub employee. Video from the scene showed flames billowing from the side of the building, firefighters dousing an entrance to the club and others carrying a victim on a stretcher toward an ambulance. Several firefighting trucks were called to the scene. Private NTV said some of the victims died in hospital after being pulled out of the blaze. Authorities detained eight people for questioning, including managers of the club and one person in charge of the renovations, Gul’s office said. A club official could not be reached for comment. The government appointed three prosecutors and several investigators to probe the case. The nightclub — which had a capacity to host up to 4,000 guests, according to its website — was closed for the holy Muslim month of Ramadan. Its owners were trying to complete the renovation work in time for next week’s Eid holiday, which follows the month of fasting.

“See you on April 10,” the club said in a message posted on its website. Police sealed off the area while power and natural gas to the neighborhood was cut off as a safety precaution. Residents were safely evacuated from the building. Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu, who was reelected in local elections on Sunday, said authorities were inspecting the entire building to assess its safety. The nightclub had not obtained the necessary permit to undertake construction and renovations, the mayor said.
