K-pop Fans Worldwide Rally for Climate Goals

K-pop fans are increasingly leveraging their massive online communities for environmental activism. They protest business deals linked to coal power, urge entertainers to cut waste, and raise awareness about climate issues.

Environmental groups have joined forces with Kpop4Planet, an initiative founded in 2021 by K-pop fans Nurul Sarifah and Dayeon Lee. Recently, after Kpop4Planet petitioned South Korean automaker Hyundai Motor Co., the company scrapped a deal linked to coal power plants in Indonesia.

K-pop fans' ability to quickly mobilize large groups has made them influential online activists. They’ve supported causes like the Black Lives Matter movement, and politicians are taking note. In 2021, Korea Beyond Coal teamed up with Kpop4Planet to oppose a coal-burning power plant near Maengbang Beach, a location famous for BTS album artwork. Their joint petition garnered thousands of signatures. – Associated Press

Food Poisoning Cuts Show Short

The U.S. punk band All Time Low had to cut short their concert at Fort Canning Park in Singapore on May 5 due to lead singer Alex Gaskarth suffering from sudden food poisoning Promoter LAMC Productions reported that Gaskarth was hospitalized and released the following morning.

The band played four songs before Gaskarth left the stage. The rest of the band performed a blink-182 cover until he returned, apologized, and played two more songs before leaving again. After another cover and an original song, the band decided to end the concert.

LAMC issued a statement on Instagram praising the band’s effort under the circumstances. Each ticketholder received a promo code worth about $22 for any LAMC show within the next year. Some fans, including one who flew from San Diego, expressed dissatisfaction.

MALAYSIA

Good Vibes Return

Malaysia’s biggest pop festival, Good Vibes, is set to return this summer after being canceled last year due to a controversial rant by The 1975’s frontman, Matt Healy, against the government’s anti-LGBTQ policies.

The festival will take place on July 20-21 at Resorts World Awana in Genting Highlands. Joji and Russ will headline the first night, with performances from Alec Benjamin, Haven, Peach Pit, Ylona Garcia, Cherry Bomb, Bad Habits, and more. J Balvin will headline the second day, along with Peggy Gou, Bibi, Henry Moodie, and Forceparkbois.

CHINA

Mayday Cleared of Lip Sync Charges

Chinese authorities have cleared Taiwanese rock band Mayday of lip-syncing allegations during a concert in Shanghai last year, as reported by the Taipei Times.

Lip-syncing is illegal in China, and the group was accused of it during their May 16, 2023 show. Mayday and their management consistently denied the claims, calling them a “malicious attack and slanderous rumor.”

An investigation by the Shanghai Municipal Administration of Culture and Tourism reviewed concert footage and found no illegal activity

Blue Note Entertainment Group and Black Radio Productions announced the lineup for their new festival in Napa Valley.

John Legend, Jill Scott and André 3000 will headline Blue Note Jazz Festival Presents: The Black Radio Experience, a boutique festival taking place at The Meritage Resort & Spa from Aug. 30 to Sept. 1.

The star-studded festival curated by Grammy winner Robert Glasper celebrates Black culture and will also feature Andra Day, Common, Nile Rodgers, Ledisi, Tank and The Bangas, Cimafunk, Marcus Miller, DJ Jazzy Jeff, Madlib, Christian McBride, Pete Rock, Joel Ross, Terrace Martin, Jahi Sundance, Kendrick Scott, Derrick Hodge, Marsha Ambrosius, Eric Roberson, RC & The Gritz, DJ Aktive, Bryan Michael-Cox and Musiq Soulchild.

“Every year our festival in Napa brings a unique vibe, and this year we are bringing you the Black Radio Experience during Labor Day weekend with a dope list of artists for an exclusive hang,” Glapser said in a statement.

The Black Radio Experience, which will be hosted by Sway Calloway, builds on Blue Note’s previous two successful festivals in Napa Valley and aims to provide an intimate experience that goes beyond music with a “special lineup of food, wine, art and cultural experiences” complementing Glasper’s vision, Blue Note Director of Programming Alex Kurland told Pollstar in March.

“The process around the talent lineup has been a result of Robert Glasper’s vibe and the culture of Blue Note Jazz Club,” Kurland, who is also a talent buyer at Blue Note, told Pollstar. “Robert’s artistry, influence, background, taste and his aura shape the talent and tone each year. The meeting point and connections between everything going on within the spaces of jazz, R&B, hip-hop and beyond are what the lineup draws from.

“I think the festival’s artistry is more about the vibe than placing labels around genres or categories. The elements of improvisation and spontaneity are richly celebrated,” he adds. “Collaboration moments occur organically. Robert’s influence and inspiration creates a strong bond amongst the artists and culture bearers in attendance.”

Three-day general admission passes start at $499 and go on sale May 16 at 9 a.m. PST. Hotel packages and VIP experiences are also available. For information about the event and tickets, visit the event website at https://www.bluenotejazz.com/black-radio-experience/.

Slash’s Electrifying Academy Awards Performance and Upcoming Projects

Slash barely had time for a single rehearsal at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles before delivering a face-melting performance of "I’m Just Ken" alongside actor Ryan Gosling, Wolfgang Van Halen, and Mark Ronson at the Academy Awards on March 10. The whirlwind schedule was due to Slash being on tour in Asia, making a trans-Pacific trip to LA and back without missing a beat.

The urgency was well worth it. Gosling, who starred as Ken in the Oscar-nominated "Barbie" film, was determined to have Slash perform for the Best Music (Original Song) category. He even went as far as securing a private jet from the CEO of Mattel to ensure Slash's presence.

“It was Ryan [Gosling] who insisted, ‘This is going to happen. [Slash] has to be there.’ He got me the plane and I flew in from Seoul, South Korea, right after a show,” Slash recounted. Arriving in LA, Slash rushed through a brief rehearsal, navigated the chaos of Oscar preparations, and delivered his brief but impactful 28-second performance before heading back to the Philippines for another show.

A New Musical Venture

Slash's commitment to his craft extends beyond last-minute performances This week, he released his new album, Orgy of the Damned, under Gibson Records, exploring his lifelong passion for the blues. The album features an impressive roster of collaborators including Chris Stapleton, Brian Johnson (AC/DC), Iggy Pop, Demi Lovato, Billy F. Gibbons (ZZ Top), Chris Robinson (The Black Crowes), Paul Rodgers (Free, Bad Company), and Beth Hart. Recorded at East West Studios and Snakepit Studio in Los Angeles, the album was released on May 17.

The S.E.R.P.E.N.T. Festival

Adding to his already busy schedule, Slash is launching his own summer festival. The S E R P E N T Festival (Solidarity, Engagement, Restore, Peace, Equality N’ Tolerance) will tour 29 dates from Montana to Texas to New York. This festival features an array of blues artists including Warren Haynes, Keb’ Mo’, Christone “Kingfish” Ingram, Robert Randolph, Samantha Fish, Eric Gales, ZZ Ward, and Jackie Venson. The festival aims to foster unity and enjoyment through music, transcending racial, gender, and cultural barriers.

“There’s so much animosity between different groups, so I wanted to create an inclusive event where everyone can come together and enjoy a day of music,” Slash explained.

A Deep Dive into the Blues

For fans of Slash's signature hard rock sound, Orgy of the Damned may seem like a departure, but the blues have always been a core influence in his playing style. “I’ve always been into hard rock, but my style has been heavily influenced by blues guitar,” Slash said. This album and tour give him the opportunity to fully immerse himself in the genre.

If the name Judith Hill rings a bell, it should. This multi-talented artist has been on the cusp of stardom twice, first as a backup singer for Michael Jackson and later as a protégé of Prince. Hill's journey has been marked by both incredible opportunities and profound personal losses, but she has emerged stronger and more determined than ever.

Hill's career first gained significant attention when she was featured in the documentary "20 Feet From Stardom," which highlighted the lives of backup singers. She was also prominently featured in the "This Is It" film, which documented Michael Jackson's rehearsals for his planned comeback tour before his untimely death in 2009. By 2016, Hill had become a close collaborator with Prince, who was producing her debut album at the time of his death.

The deaths of these two music legends took a heavy toll on Hill, both professionally and personally. The loss of Prince, in particular, whom she considered a mentor and friend, was devastating. Compounding her grief was the rise of social media trolls who labeled her a "black widow," a term that deeply affected her mental health and threw her into a tailspin.

However, Hill has reclaimed her life and art, rebuilding her music career with the help of therapy and a supportive family. She released her album "Letters From A Black Widow" on April 26 and has been touring extensively in support of it. This album is a testament to her resilience, merging soul, classical, blues, and jazz influences into an extraordinary work.

Hill credits her musician parents for influencing her style. Her mother, Michiko (Yoshimura) Hill, is a classical pianist from Tokyo, and her father, Robert Lee “Pee Wee” Hill, performed with Sly and The Family Stone as well as Billy Preston. Both parents play in Judith’s band and tour with her, providing a strong familial support system.

Over the last two years, Hill has been touring extensively, both solo and in support of acts like JJ Grey & Mofro, and performing at festivals including Eric Clapton’s Crossroads Guitar Festival. Represented by Jack Randall at The Kurland Agency and managed by Ivory Daniel, owner of The Regime, she recently completed a showcase at the Troubadour in West Hollywood, California, and plans to continue touring North America and Europe throughout the year.

Interview Highlights

Q: With your album, "Letters From A Black Widow," you seem to be taking ownership of your own career after the deaths of Michael Jackson and Prince. How has your music helped you to do that?

Judith Hill: I am using my art to be able to speak. My truth has been very powerful, and it’s been something that I’ve been afraid to do for a very long time, just because the trolling really did cause an internal depression in me, and it really caused me to shut down. This is really a powerful step for me to be able to make this music and to be able to finally express my side of how it feels to be on the other side of it. And, it’s been a very, very liberating experience.

Q: The deaths of two such important figures in your life must have been devastating, not to mention the online harassment. How did you deal with that?

Judith Hill: I was a background singer with Michael, but Prince was a friend and mentor who produced my first album. We were launching my first album when he passed. But in both cases, it was incredibly traumatic and I didn’t know how to deal with that kind of trauma and pain. Coming off of Prince’s passing became a very complicated grieving process, and it took years to unravel. I went to counseling and found people who could help me with my mental health and I tried to navigate all of the dark feelings. At one point, I was almost getting paranoid because of the trolls. But when you’re in your own universe of it, it can be very overwhelming and take over your whole world. Trying to get past that was difficult, and it took years. I gave myself time to not rush myself through the process. But I finally came to a place where I was able to find artistic expression for it, and that was really very, very powerful.

Judith Hill: Rising from the Shadows of Legends

Q: Your parents are also musicians, and tour with you. What was your musical upbringing?

Judith Hill: My parents are a huge part of my upbringing in introducing me to music. My dad was focused on Motown and soul. And my mom was also very into Motown and jazz. She also started as a classical pianist. I listened to a lot of classical music, which I deeply love as well, and played it growing up. There was definitely diversity in the household, just because my parents had two such different experiences. Sly Stone was a big part of my childhood and was really like the Bible to my musical understanding. What’s home base for me is the integration of folk and gospel and rock. I was lucky enough to have mentors like Rose Stone and Freddie Stone in my life just because they were part of my family’s inner circle. And my dad was Billy Preston’s bass player.

Q: You were initially known as a vocalist. Now, you’re playing guitar and you always have played piano and written your own music. How has that helped you move forward?

Judith Hill: I played a little bit of guitar when I was around Prince, but it was definitely after [his death] where I felt like it was a new voice for me. Songwriting is definitely something that makes me feel alive and gives me a home and a place to exist. It feels very cathartic and powerful for me. This has been an incredible healing process.

Q: What do you want people to know about Judith Hill?

Judith Hill: I want people to know that I never stop. I believe so greatly in music’s ability to heal and bring people together and bring a sense of transcendence. I’m really about that spiritual experience and using music to do that. Playing live is where I feel most at home. It’s my joy. I’m happy to share my story and hopefully it brings encouragement to anyone else who’s going through something similar.

THE NAME

Tre Guyton ARTIST BY

1. I started off with really being into writing poems about anything going on in my life. And poetry helped me deal with a lot of unnecessary emotions to keep me sane. So one day I was just like since I have such a crazy story and background I might as well make music that corresponds with people’s lives and so they can relate to certain things that I’ve been through so that when they hear my music people know I been there and they can be encouraged by me.

2. The moment that really let me know that I wanted to take music seriously was when I played a snippet of a unreleased song around my patnas and they stopped and was like man bruh you tough and they could just tell I was passionate behind the music and just told me to keep going.

3. My musical influences growing up as far as in the new generation was Rod Wave, Yungeen Ace, Deemula, Young Thug, Rich Homie Quan, YFN Lucci, Doe B, Rubberband OG, etc. They really got me in a certain mode as far as really rappin passionately and speaking on all aspects of life and they music got me through a lot.

4. I faced some harsh challenges but I respected it and I never let it stop me from doing my thing because I knew I would elevate my sound. I remember people telling me my music was hard and then finding out they told somebody else it was trash or they would hate and be like oh he just doing this for clout. Not even realizing that I was taking this craft serious like I did when I had baseball dreams.

5. Songwriting honestly comes natural I go based off of what I feel and match the feeling to a beat that I find while trying to make a song and I just make it happen.

6. My most memorable performance in my career was performing in from of Jeff Sledge A&R from Atlantic Records and him telling me that I have what it takes as long as I keep making quality music.

7. I handle criticism really well actually and I love it because I know how much I love music so I just keep pushing to record better songs. Any piece of advice I would give artist is just to stay in your own lane and stay in tune with your own sound. When you only listen to your own music a lot the more you can increase standards on your own music to make hits.

8. When I started collabing with my boy DJ Disher when I very first started he helped me learn how to use my voice. But when I met my producer Gee Litt also co-signed by Pusha T she really changed the game as far as finding my sound and making great songs and it motivated me a lot.

9. How I stay inspired is anything that I’m dealing with or I’ve been through or I know other people in the world can vibe out and relate to I make songs about it and put it out because people gravitate to that type of music.

10. I’m excited to realized my 2nd EP “Life of TreDay 2” (Road 2 Success) because everybody knows how I sounded when I first dropped my first EP and got my feet wet. But when everybody and all my fans and supporters hear “Life of TreDay 2” they are going to realize my progress and elevation took off to the max to the greatest potential ever. And I see myself independently making great music with some main stream artist and doing big shows in the next few years. I want everybody to be able to say I’m the most versatile artist from Alabama that they ever heard.

Answer: My passion for the arts has always been my driving force. The power of music to tell stories and evoke emotions captivated me from an early age. Over the years, my journey as a female artist has grown from participating in high school choirs to becoming a multi-award-winning solo artist. This path has been marked by numerous achievements, including various accolades, impactful community work, and the creation of music that resonates with people worldwide. I am continually inspired to produce more music and share my voice with the world.

2. Your work often delves into themes of empowerment and identity. How do these themes shape your creative process and the messages you convey through your art?

Answer: Music has always been a reflection of my personal experiences, encompassing moments of heartache, triumph, and everything in between. These themes of empowerment and identity are intrinsic to my creative process. They allow me to heal and to create music that offers solace and strength to others. 3. Female artists have played a pivotal role in shaping the art world. Who are some of the women in art who have inspired your own work?

Answer: Many incredible women in the music industry have inspired me, including legends like Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, Celine Dion, and Aretha Franklin. Their immense talent and enduring influence have profoundly impacted my own career, shaping my musical style and aspirations.

4. Artistic mediums can vary widely. Could you tell us more about your preferred medium and how it allows you to express yourself as an artist?

Answer: As an artist, I find that my preferred medium is music. It allows me to channel my deepest emotions and personal experiences into my work. 8. How do you see your art as a form of activism, and what messages or causes are most important for you to address through your work?

Answer: My music serves as a platform for activism, uniting people through powerful messages. The causes that are most important to me include Domestic Violence awareness and Justice for All. Through my art, I strive to address these issues and inspire positive change.

9. Your art has a distinct and recognizable style. Could you describe your artistic vision and the emotions you aim to evoke in those who experience your art?

Answer: My artistic vision is deeply rooted in my passion and personal experiences. I want my audience to feel the depth of my emotions, understand my journey, and find healing through my music. My aim is to evoke empathy and connection, helping listeners navigate their own challenges and find hope.

10. What projects or exhibitions can your fans and art enthusiasts look forward to in the near future?

Answer: I'm excited to share that I'm wrapping up my fifth EP album, "Energy," which will be released in 2024. This album is an uplifting collection that covers a variety of topics and sounds. Additionally, I'm working on several other projects that will further explore my artistic journey and message.

The Genesis of Interpol

Interpol, a seminal band in the post-punk revival scene, emerged from the bustling music scene of New York City in the late 1990s. Formed in 1997, the band's lineup has seen some changes, but its core members—Paul Banks (vocals, guitar), Daniel Kessler (guitar, vocals), and Sam Fogarino (drums)—have remained consistent driving forces. Their music, characterized by brooding lyrics, intricate guitar work, and atmospheric soundscapes, has cemented their place as pivotal figures in modern rock.

Early Influences and Stylistic Evolution

Interpol's sound is often compared to bands from the post-punk era, such as Joy Division and The Chameleons. However, their unique blend of melancholic melodies and rhythmic complexity has set them apart. The band's debut album, "Turn On the Bright Lights" (2002), was a critical success and established their signature sound dark, emotive, and sophisticated. This album's success was a crucial moment, marking Interpol as torchbearers of a new wave of post-punk bands.

Discography and Musical Milestones

Turn On the Bright Lights

"Turn On the Bright Lights" is widely regarded as one of the most influential albums of the early 2000s. Tracks like "Obstacle 1" and "PDA" showcase the band's ability to craft hauntingly beautiful songs that resonate deeply with listeners.

Antics

Released in 2004, "Antics" continued Interpol's ascent in the music world. This album featured more refined production and included hits like "Evil" and "Slow Hands," which received extensive radio play and further solidified the band's popularity.

Our Love to Admire

"Our Love to Admire" (2007) marked Interpol's transition to a major label. This album saw the band experimenting with more expansive and orchestrated sounds, as evidenced in tracks like "The Heinrich Maneuver" and "Pioneer to the Falls."

Later Works and Continued Innovation

Subsequent albums, including "Interpol" (2010), "El Pintor" (2014), and "Marauder" (2018), showcased the band's ability to evolve while maintaining their distinctive sound. Each release has been met with critical acclaim, reinforcing Interpol's reputation for consistency and artistic integrity.

Live Performances and Legacy

Interpol's live performances are known for their intensity and precision. The band has toured extensively worldwide, captivating audiences with their electrifying stage presence and meticulous sound. Their ability to translate the depth and complexity of their studio recordings into powerful live performances has earned them a loyal fan base.
