In the world of commercial and private real estate, Las Cruces leads the state. Home prices remain stable while the rest of the nation struggles with devaluation. We have become New Mexico’s second largest and fastest-growing city, fed by White Sands, a major university, and private enterprise. Yet, despite our many accomplishments, we often feel underrepresented in Santa Fe. As the nation prepares for new leadership, so does the state of New Mexico. For us, change comes in the form of Connie Hettinga of Coldwell Banker. “We’re pretty lucky,” Connie tells us, just a week after her installation as President-Elect of the Realtors Association of New Mexico, or RANM. “Our diverse economy fuels our longterm growth.” Where else but Las Cruces can one find a largely bilingual population, a growing tax base, a high number of advanced-degree scientists and engineers, and a hardworking, small town populace with sleeves rolled, ready to make it work? While we hear news of families buried
financially beneath homes they cannot sell, Las Cruces builders struggle to keep step with growing demand. Yet RANM has not seen a Las Cruces president since Bill Peterson, Connie’s mentor, back in 1991. What Does a Local President of RANM Mean to You? As it turns out, it means great deal. RANM takes an active role in Santa Fe over such vital issues as eminent domain, water rights, and transfer taxes. “We actively lobby in the interest of the homeowner and homebuyer,” Connie tells us. Yet she notes that only 175 association members out of over 8,000 statewide attended the RANM convention in Albuquerque a few weeks ago. Connie has a plan to spur interest, increase education, promote awareness, and to make RANM more inclusive of New Mexico’s many rural towns. “I want to get people involved again,” Connie Hettinga says. “I want to pull the state back together as one community.”

Las Cruces, NM – Las Cruces Home Builders Association (LCHBA) to provide a Thanksgiving meal for 200 families in Las Cruces. Annually, the LCHBA Community Service Committee packs boxes with all the grocery items needed for a Thanksgiving dinner, including turkeys, pumpkin pie, even margarine and delivers the boxes to disadvantaged families at the Families & Youth Center and MacArthur Elementary School. In 2007, the Community Service Committee provided a combined total of 120 boxes to the organizations. The committee raises funds for this endeavor through its raffle at the LCHBA monthly membership luncheons. They also rely on donations of money from the general membership and community businesses. The committee is still in the process of raising funds and soliciting empty copy paper boxes for delivery of the items. $50 is all it takes to sponsor one family. This years’ delivery will take place on Tuesday, November 25, 2008. For those interested in donating or getting involved, or for more information, contact Elena Wood, Membership Director at 575-526-6126. Las Cruces Home Builders Association: The Las Cruces Home Builders Association (LCHBA) is a non-profit trade association and it represents the residential home building industry in our region. Its designated membership area includes all of Dona Ana County as well as the Truth or Consequences and Deming areas. The LCHBA is a local association chapter and is affiliated with the state chapter, the New Mexico Home Builders Association (NMHBA). Both the LCHBA and the NMHBA are part of a national federation, the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB). The LCHBA has over 500 members, the state association has over 3,000 and the national federation has over 250,000 members nationwide. Members of our local association are elected annually to serve as directors and/or officers of both the state and national groups. Of the 550 plus members of the LCHBA, approximately one-third are licensed builders and the remaining members are subcontractors, suppliers of materials, and providers of services. All of the members have a vested interest in the success of home building in our community. We all work together to provide the community's housing. A fourteen-member board of directors, a fivemember executive committee, and executive officer manage the LCHBA. There are over 15 committees, task forces, forums, and councils. The
LCHBA's activities are planned and managed by volunteer members and a staff of five. The LCHBA’s purpose is to protect the American dream of home ownership. We have the following mission statement: Chartered in 1959, the Las Cruces Home Builders Association is comprised of members of the building industry and its affiliates. As the voice of the building industry, we serve our members and the community by: • promoting balanced economic development; • providing education; and • promoting professionalism. As a regulated industry, the LCHBA takes pride in working with local, state, and national governments in shaping fair and equitable policies tha will help maintain sensible growth and help overcome the barriers to affordable housing. The LCHBA strives to provide education and other professional benefits for its members Dozens of courses in business management and construction are available to members through NAHB. Members are able to purchase affordable workers' compensation insurance coverage through the NMHBA. The LCHBA offers a variety of informational seminars to its members to keep them informed about the latest regulations and products. Several major events are held by the LCHBA each year and provide multiple benefits to the association, its members and to the public Through the annual Home Improvement and Lifestyle Show, Spring Showcase of Homes, and Fall Parade of Homes, members have an opportunity to spotlight their products and services. The community benefits by seeing what the lates offerings are in home building and home remodeling. Because the LCHBA is a non-profit association, it must raise over 60 percent of its operating revenue and it does this in part through these association sponsored community events. The LCHBA over the years has also been very active in supporting community needs. The construction of the 48-Hour House in 1990 benefited the homeless community. The joint venture with the city in constructing Veteran's Park on the Eas Mesa was a huge success. The Fallfest Auction has enabled the LCHBA to contribute over $75,000 to the United Way, September 11th Fund and Mesilla Valley Habitat for Humanity. In addition, there have been many other projects tha members have contributed to individually, such as the construction of Unidad Park, and renovations of various community service buildings.

Recipients also “contribute at least 500 ‘sweat hours’ toward completion of their new home.” “This is a good feeling for us,” says Connie Hettinga, recent Las Cruces Association of Realtors President. The LCAR Board contributed $1000 toward the project for “appliances and other things around the home.”
