Photo Assignment Our main assignment was to take a press photograph of stereotypes according to the Minerva Model. We decided to use smoking as our main theme. The reason why we choose smoking is to show a point where different types and groups of people have something in common, even though they live different lifestyles. Society looks down upon smoking, therefore, we chose smoking to illustrate a form of irony, when a person with a certain position is smoking – we have a smoking high school teacher in this photograph. We took a portrait of a teacher, who is smoking outside Gefion Gymnasium’s rotunda. His name is Preben Reffstrup, who teaches mathematics and physics. We could choose between a photograph of him and another photograph of a group of people smoking. The reason why we choose Reffstrup is that when you take a portrait, you get an intimate point of view. Moreover, you are also in direct contact with the person inside the photo. The photo could be used in an article such as an interview, portrait or other news media – therefore, the photograph fulfil the criteria of a press photo. It is not an art photograph because it is not set up, nor have we thought about using a specific person or other elements being present in the photo. The only demand we had to our photograph, was smoking as a stereotype. Preben Reffstrup fits in the green field of the Minerva Model. The reason why is because he is a teacher at a high school, therefore he is strongly connected to the education system. Because of his job, he has a cultural liberalism – he can wear whatever he wants to wear, and smoke any kind of cigar he wants to smoke. He has a high prestige, since he is a high school teacher. A common stereotype is that being a high school teacher is better than being a primary school teacher. There are almost no difference between man and woman in his job area according to the Minerva Model. The fact that he smoke a cigar also shows some prestige, since it is not just a normal cigarette. It could indicate that he has a high income. Reffstrup could fit between the green and the pink field of the Minerva Model, for example because as a teacher, he also has to pay regards to the people around him – the students and his co-workers.
