Stereotypes - True or False?

The photo was taken outside ILLUM on ‘Strøget’, 29th of february 2016.

It was taken around 11:20 am, and at the time the light from the sun was strong and created a sharp reflection in the wet pavement. This created a strong light above the couple in the ILLUM advertisement behind them.

In the picture we see two senior citizens of Denmark shopping. They are well dressed due to the cold weather, but still with visible faces not covered by scarves or hats.

When asked for a photo, the man removed his hat and held onto it with his left arm.

They also posed as a couple; the man's arm behind the woman’s back. They both smiled when asked questions and in the shot, the woman looks away from the camera towards the interviewer.

We chose this photo, because we didn’t had so many to chose between, and we thought this was the best photo. We also talked with the two senior citizens, so we got some history behind the photo. They have both been school teachers for over 40 years, and was happy to participate in the project. “We have never said no to school students before, and we will be happy to help”, they said.

The couple in the photo is telling a story. We assume different things about their character by looking at them. We can relate to these people, doing taking an everyday trip down the street; they are normal citizens of Copenhagen, that has just been out shopping.

It is not an art photo, we did not ask them to change position If we look at the man’s shopping bag, we can see it is from a store that values organic products. This indicates that he is environment oriented. The couple mentioned that they have been teaching for 40 years which, on the Minerva model, puts them in the modern idealistic group.

People in the modern idealistic group typically has a higher education, perhaps working in the public sector, or in the educational system, a middle income, and cares about the environment.
