Studieretningsdag: Stereotype – true or false?
Discretion and location We found a small shoemaker on Gothersgade in the middle of Copenhagen. The store was located on a corner, with two entrances. The photo shows a man standing in his store. The man is placed to the right in the picture and his posture is static. His hands are folded and placed on his lower back. He is looking out the window, focusing on something behind the camera. He has a thoughtful expression on his face and he seems calm and collected.

In front of the man you see a table. A lot of keys lay on the table. In the left of the picture there is also placed some shoe fillers. Behind the man you see his desk. To the left you see a lot of tools, nametags and one of the two entrances. To the right you see a wall filled with shoelaces hanging on it. Above the man there is a reflection of what the man is looking at. There are buildings on both sides and two trees framing the man. You can also se two lamps in the ceiling inside the store. The picture was taken outside the store, looking though the glass. This gives the picture a lot of reflection, along with lines that gives perspective and depth. It creates a double illusion, because we can see both what is behind the man (the store) and what is in front of him (the street). The picture is taken at eye-level view, which makes the viewer identify with the man and he is equal two the viewer. The picture has a lot of lines. Many of them are pointing at the man.

Why have you chosen the photo? We chose the photo, first of all because of the man’s appeal. He was a quite man, but showed us a lot of hospitality. The photo was not planed, but caught in the moment. We did not give the man any instructions. We asked if we could photograph him and his store, but it was his own choice to come forward and stand as he did. We like the depth in the photo and the fact that there are a lot of details. The first thing that your eyes see is the centred man standing in his store. As you look deeper you start noticing all the details and later the reflection of the outside street. We also like the atmosphere and the proudness in the man’s posture. His kindness is also shown in his calm smile, but there is a sense of mystery in his expression. The window also creates a distance between viewer and the man, which reflects on his mysterious personality. Explain how the photo fits the criteria for press photo, as introduced by Andreas Bo There is a foreground, middle ground and background. It tells us a story about a man and his work. It is court in the moment and portrays a everyday situation. The Minerva model In comparison to the Minerva model the man we have photographed is mostly on the violet and pink spectre. He has a low education, but a high income since his store is placed in the middle of Copenhagen. It is a family business, which also can be seen in his proud expression. This gives him family values. His work includes a lot of manual labour and he likes to do things the old fashioned way, which makes him traditional. Other symbols in the picture •
The keys symbolise his mysteries personality (his facade)
•
The light around his upper head almost looks like a halo
•
The two trees gives him a majestic feel
