A Kvevri (pictured below) is a large (800-3500 litres) Georgian earthenware vessel dating back to about 8000 BC. It traditionally has an inner coating of beeswax and resembles an amphora without handles. It is used for the fermentation and storage of wine, often buried underground in Marani (pictured above), a Georgian wine cellar. The kvevri is an integral part of the centuries-old Georgian wine-making tradition.

ABOUT GEORGIA

COUNTRY NAME: GEORGIA CAPITAL: TBILISI (POPULATION: 1 118 300) COUNTRY CODE: GEO INTERNET CODE: GE POPULATION: 3.7 MLN STATE LANGUAGE: GEORGIAN MAIN RELIGION: ORTHODOX CHRISTIANITY TIME: GMT+4

• GEOGRAPHY Georgia is located at the crossroads of Europe and Asia. It lies on the eastern shore of the Black Sea, with Turkey and Armenia to the south, Azerbaijan to the east, and Russia to the north, across the Caucasus Mountains. Georgia's total territory covers 96,700 square km and its capital city is Tbilisi. The population of Georgia is slightly below 4 million and the official language is Georgian. The national currency is the Lari (GEL) while Georgia in the Georgian language is "Sakartvelo". • HISTORY Georgia was one of the first countries in the world to officially adopt Christianity in 337 AD, but the history of this land goes much further back. Some of the world's oldest hominid remains, dating over 1.8 million years, were found near Tbilisi. The Ancient Greek story of Jason and the Argonauts and their search of the Golden Fleece is inspired by Georgians' unique method of using sheepskins to collect heavy gold deposits from mountainous rivers. For a long time, Georgia was a kingdom and over the years its boundaries and capital cities have changed as successive Kings and invaders held sway, from King David to Queen Tamar, from the Mongols, Persians and Ottomans to the Russians. Each has left their mark, yet somehow the true spirit and character of Georgia shines through. • WINE Various discoveries have left historians in no doubt that Georgia is the birthplace of wine. Ancient wine vessels made of clay, bronze and silver; golden wine cups; wine barrels dating back to the 2nd or 3rd millennium BC; and vine seeds found in the ancient tombs of the Bronze age outline the long and proud history of Georgian wine. Today, over 500 varieties of grapes grow in our small country, and Georgian wines are well known for their unique flavors and characteristics. The country's warm climate and moist air from the Black Sea provides perfect conditions for producing exquisite wine. Georgia's

diverse landscape and climate zones enable its wine-growers to produce one of the most extensive collections of wine anywhere in the world. • NATURE Georgia’s natural environment is one of the most special in the world. Although only 69,700 square kilometers, Georgia’s biodiversity is immense: subtropical marshes, semi-deserts, lofty alpine meadows and mighty snowy peaks can all be found within a hundred kilometers of each other. There are more than 40 protected areas so much of it is untouched and unspoiled.National parks and protected areas cover more than 7% of Georgia and 75% of all protected areas are covered by woods. There are 14 national reserves, 9 national parks, 17 suppressed, 14 natural monuments and 2 protected landscapes in Georgia. The Georgian landscape is especially suited to eco-tourists, due to its relatively unspoiled status and absence of mass tourism. Amateur botanists or zoologists will find themselves in a wonderland of rare plants and animals when they visit Georgia. 10 REASONS TO VISIT GEORGIA 1. STUNNING LANDSCAPES Georgia is a very compact country, which can surprise with its natural diversity. If you cross the Georgian territory from east to west, you will encounter semi-desert, steppe, alpine meadows, mountainous peaks reaching 5000m, rivers, waterfalls, magnetic sands and the Black Sea. Therefore, lesiue opportunities in the country are almost boundless. 2. DELICIOUS CUISINE Georgia boasts natural ingredients with which it offers a rich regional cuisine. Fresh vegetables, milky cheeses, various kinds of pastry and meat dishes, herbs and spices and much more all lead your taste buds and appetite to fall in love with this country. 3. NATURAL WINES Georgia is the UNESCO-Recognized cradle of wine 8000 years ago, grape cultivation and wine production started here. The traditional Georgian art of wine-making (fermenting in clay pots called kvevri) is officially recognized as part of the world’s intangible heritage. There are around 500 sorts of vines in Georgia, so you can imagine how rich and tasty our wines can be! 4. HEALING MINERAL WATERS Georgia cares not just about food and wine, but about general well being. There are more than 2000 mineral springs all around the country. The influence of mineral waters increases if it is accompanied by mountainous air, sun rails and the green of wood. 5. LEISURE AND SPA Georgia offers its visitors great opportunities for leisure and relaxation. The spa town of Borjomi 150km west of TbilisI produces Georgia’s most famous mineral water, and also boasts popular medical and spa treatments. In the wine-rich eastern Georgian region of Kakheti, you can enjoy a wine spa. One of the major attractions of Tbilisi is its sulfur baths, which are based on natural thermal springs too. When in Georgia, be sure to bathe in its special waters!

6. UNESCO SITES In Georgia, you can touch living history. Besides impressive ancient fortresses and cave towns, there are also three sites on the UNESCO World Heritage List: Bagrati Cathedral and Gelati Monastery, near Kutaisi; the historical monuments of Mtskheta; and the medieval towers of the upper Svaneti region. 7. ADVENTURES For those who prefer active holidays, Georgia is a great destination. The mountains of Svaneti, Tusheti, Racha, Kazbegi and Khevsureti are perfect for hiking, trekking, horseback riding, 4x4 trips, mountain biking and climbing; the rivers Aragvi, Rioni and Mtkvari meanwhile are, in parts, ideal for rafting. For the particularly intrepid, Sataplia and Prometheus caves house a fascinating hidden world of stalactites, stalagmites and underground rivers. In Martvili, the eagle’s and okatse canyons area dream for people who like rocks and forests… and there are also several national parks and protected landscapes where you can enjoy great hikes and sample the diversity of Georgian flora and fauna. 8. SEA AND SNOW Yes, skiing in the mountains and walking along the seaside can be done in one day. In Western Georgia, you can swim in the Black Sea and admire the beautiful snow covered peaks of Greater Caucasus even in summer. In winter, you can pursue winter sports, and then go down to Adjara region, to breathe in the salty marine air, enjoy the sun and the subtropical nature. 9. UNIQUE GEORGIAN CULTURE, POLYPHONIC MUSIC AND NATIONAL DANCE Georgian culture is wide and contains phenomenal elements that will leave you wanting more. From the sights and sounds of our amazing theatre, food, arts, wine and music, Georgia will capture a place in your heart forever. Georgia’s polyphonic music tradition is world-renowned and calls upon an enchanting combination of ancient and modern harmonies. In 2001 UNESCO acknowledged this music as “a masterpiece of the world’s intangible cultural heritage” and its unique, slightly dissonant style has not changed for centuries. Another gem of Georgian culture is our national dance, like its polyphonic songs, remains a major cultural export. The vigorous, vibrant men leap high in the air; clash swords amidst flying sparks and razor sharp daggers are thrown into the floor in a frenetic, breathless choreography. All this contrasts with the women’s graceful, elegant and lightweight dances. Add our fabulous multi-coloured costumes from the many mountain villages, wild drumming, accompanying pipes and accordions, and the overall effect is mesmeric and truly unforgettable. 10. HOSPITALITY If you are coming to Georgia, prepare to eat, drink and be merry as the Georgians take immense pride in the way they look after their guests, which people here consider gifts from God.

The Legend of Tbilisi - According to folklore, the area on which Georgia's capital city rests today was covered by forests as late as 458 AD. King Vakhtang Gorgasali I of Georgia went hunting in the then heavily forested region with a falcon. The King's falcon caught a pheasant during the hunt, after which both fell into a nearby hot spring and died. King Vakhtang was so enchanted by the discovery of these springs that he cut down the forest and began building a city. The name Tbilisi is derived from the Georgian word t'bili which means "warm".

Old Tbilisi and its Architecture – the city’s old district is located on both sides of the Mtkvari River and is dominated by Mount Mtatsminda, Narikala fortress and the Kartlis Deda (Mother of Georgia) monument. The area chiefly represents a 19th-century urban fabric with largely eclectic architecture including buildings and structures from the 5th to the 20th century. The district houses numerous tourist attractions including churches, museums, sulphur bathhouses, and peculiar wooden houses with open, carved balconies.

WHY THE LELOS The Georgian national rugby team is nicknamed the Lelos for an historic reason: Lelo- burti (Lelo-ball) is an ancient, free-for-all form of folk football, still played in the western parts of the country. Lelo has its roots in pagan times as the ball symbolized the Sun, one of the seven celestial bodies worshipped throughout the Middle East. Then the game, which by the way is still is a tested form of military training, was adopted by the Orthodox Church to such an extent that the Priest used to bless a red - the most revered Christian colour - ball at Easter and throw it up to the players.

The Winners of Lelo Ball (2015)

Villages competed against each other, Uppies (zemourebi) with Downies (Kvemourebi), married men with bachelors, and sometimes teams were selected even on tribal lines, especially in the seaside town of Poti. The goal of the Lelo-burti was to carry the ball to a premarked place, known as Lelo. Hence, it is almost by default that both a goalmouth area and a try in contemporary Georgian are referred to as Lelo. The folk game got its first rules, written by scholars, in the 1930s and 1940s. According to them, when played on a modern 100m long pitch, Lelo is a 13-a-side contest. The ball is too heavy to be thrown far. Carrying, passing and kicking are unlimited but, as in Georgian wrestling, one can only tackle the opposing ball carrier above the waist. A Lelo is scored by carrying, throwing, kicking or rolling the ball over the opposition endline and it counts as a single point

View of Old Tbilisi at night - Narikala Fortress (pictured above) is an ancient fortress overlooking Tbilisi, the capital of Georgia, and the Mtkvari River. The fortress consists of two walled sections on a steep hill between the sulfur baths and the botanical gardens. On the lower court there is the recently restored St Nicholas church. Newly built in 1996–1997, it replaces the original 13th-century church that was destroyed in a fire. The fortress was established in the 4th century. The Bridge of Peace (pictured below) is a bow-shaped pedestrian bridge over the Mtkvari River in Tbilisi. The bridge, which stretches 150 meters, was ordered by the City Hall of Tbilisi to create a contemporary design feature connecting old with new. The bridge provides a unique view of Metekhi Church, Narikala Fortress and the statue of the city's founder Vakhtang Gorgasali on one side, and Baratashvili Bridge on the other

PRE-INDEPENDENCE

The Lelos participated in an annual competition, the 7th tier European Nations Cup (ENC) organized by FIRA-AER from the early 1960s. Georgia officially joined the then lowest 5th tier in autumn 1993, but have progressed relentlessly since then. The first notable success of the independent Georgian side occurred in October 1996 when its former rulers Russia arrived for the very first time to play. The Lelos won 29-20, scoring three tries to one. This was followed by another epic win in May 1998 when schoolboy Malkhaz Urjukashvili kicked four penalties in torrential rain, and the team repelled the Bears’ late assault, to win 12-6. The Lelos would then narrowly miss out on qualification for th e 1999 Rugby World Cup. Nevertheless, they were rewarded with a berth in the 6-team Division one where they have never finished outside the top three.

View of Old Tbilisi - Located on the southeastern edge of Europe, Tbilisi's proximity to lucrative east-west trade routes often made the city a point of contention between various rival empires throughout history and the city's location to this day ensures its position as an important transit route for global energy and trade projects. Tbilisi's varied history is reflected in its architecture

FIRA - ENC - REC + ANTIM CUP

Georgia played its inaugural test on 12/09/1989, beating Zimbabwe 16-3 in Kutaisi. In autumn 1993, Georgia made its debut at FIRA Champs Level 5, drawing 10-10 in Luxembourg. On 20/10/1996 Georgia beat Russia for the first time, 29-20 in Tbilisi, setting a trend of domination over their northern rival. Since 2000, Georgia has participated in the reformed European Nations Cup (ENC) which has now been re-branded the Rugby Europe Championship (REC). In 13 editions of the ENC, Georgia never finished outside the top 3, winning 8 titles in all, topping the annual standings 10 times out of 16, and completing 5 grandslams. Since 2002, Georgia and Romania have contested for the Antim Cup, named after the common Orthodox Saint. The Lelos hold the edge so far, with 9 victories to Romania’s 5.

Georgian Traditional Dance is a celebration of life and Georgia’s rich and diverse culture. Each dance portrays the characteristics of the region in which it originated. The mountain dances, such as Khevsuruli (pictured below) or Mtiuluri, are different from valley or lowland dances such as Acharuli and Davluri (pictured above). The costumes are different for every dance and resemble the clothing of the past in different regions of Georgia

Since RWC 2011, Georgia has regularly hosted autumn tests against tier 2 nations. The Lelos have achieved some notable victories in this period, most significantly against Samoa in 2013 and Japan in 2014. Both famous triumphs were recorded on 23rd November, which is Giorgoba (St. George's Day) a national holiday.

Georgian Traditional Dance - the dances perfectly capture the natural gracefulness and beauty of Georgian women (pictured above) and the courage, honor and respectfulness of Georgian men (pictured below). The male dancers perform spectacular leaps and turns, incredible spins and possess a highly original technique. Unlike any other dancers in the world, they dance on their toes without the aid of “block” shoes. The female dancers “glide” like swans

GEORGIA AT RWC FINALS

Since gaining independence and before the turn of the century, Georgia has failed on first two occasions to qualify for RWC. In the new Millenium, the Lelos have already earned the pass to the World's "Top 20" four times. This sequence started on a memorable day of 13/10/2002 when Georgia defeated arch-rivals Russia 17-13 at Tbilisi Naional Stadium. Albeit Georgia won only two of its 12 RWC matches so far, they have improved immensely since debut in Australia 12 years ago, and now constitute a real threat for any opposition. On 15/09/2007 in Bordeaux, Georgia chased Ireland very close, squandering lots of scoring chances and eventually going down by just 10-14.

The freshness and flavour of the fruit and vegetables is incredible in Georgia. Watermelon, tomatoes, oranges... I could write a long list!! THE CIRCLE OF ETERNAL LIFE

GEORGIAN WARRIOR TRADITION

In the homeland of grape and wine, Georgia, warriors since ancient times had a beautiful martial tradition, which represents the unbreakable soul and the spirituality of Georgian culture. It is known, that Georgians often had to, and still have to, protect their country, traditions, faith and ways in uneven and heroic wars. Since the ancient times, Georgian warriors, when heading to another self-sacrificing defensive war, would carry in their back-sacks a grapevine. The warriors knew that if they fell in a battle unburied by their brothers, then their bodies would reintegrate with their motherland, and the mother soil, fertilized by them, would give birth to a beautiful vineyard, thanks to the grapevines carried into the battle on their backs. The warriors believed, that on the horrific and orphan battlefield, the enemies, who survived their wrath, not due to their superior courage, but due to their sheer quantity, could never guess that behind their backs they were leaving not a valley of death, but a beautiful vineyard, which would give a sign* in three years to the widows and orphans, whispering to them in warriors’ voices “we are still here, we have not gone anywhere, we are coming back to you.” And that in one more year the vineyard would give a full harvest to the widows and orphans. In that harvest, a grown-up boy, when working, would remember the arm of his fallen father, which he had stared at in a vineyard when little, the boy would begin to sing like his father, and would gratefully say to his mother: “You are a vineyard newly blossomed. Young, beautiful, growing in Eden, A fragrant poplar sapling in Paradise, May God adorn you. No one is more worthy of praise, You yourself are the sun, shining brilliantly.” ** And the vineyard would kindly and gratefully listen to this song by its son. And the vineyard would grant the calm to the boy, the same calm, with which it had accompanied his father into the battle, for it knew, that the back of the lion-heart would remain unseen by the enemy and the wounds and that if the warrior fell, the grapevine would return unharmed to the land in order to revive the kindness of the warrior. This Legend was kindly provided by publicist. writer, former rugby player and a board member of Georgian Rugby Union, Mr. Levan Vasadze

* In Georgian “nishani”, or sign, is the name of the first vineyard harvest, which comes in the third year after planting the grapevine ** English Translation of “Thou Art a Vineyard” – an ancient church song written in 12th century by Georgian King to Virgin Mary Owing to this old Georgian warrior tradition the backs of The Lelos Jerseys are decorated by an engraved grapevine, which is a gorgeous symbol of the bravery, idealism and warrior spirit of this ancient culture
