CONCEPT STATEMENT TUCSON HAS BEEN URBANIZED TOO MUCH DURING THE LAST DECADES THAT IN SOME AREAS IT HAS LOST ITS WILDLIFE AND VEGETATION VALUE. THE GOAL IS TO DESIGN A GLASS GARDEN THAT FUNCTIONS AS A NATURAL HABITAT IN THE HEART OF THE UOFA CAMPUS. IN ORDER TO ACHIEVE A DYNAMIC RELATION BETWEEN THE SPECIES I DECIDED TO USE VERTICAL ORGANIZERS. THESE VERTICAL ORGANIZERS COULD INTEGRATE WITH EACH OTHER TO INTRODUCE MULTIPLE LAYERS OF LIFE PLUS BUILDING SYSTEMS LIKE THE WAY THESE SYSTEMS ARE WORKING IN NATURE. IN ADDITION TO LINK DIFFRENET SPECIES IN THE BUILDING, THESE VERTICAL ORGANIZERS CAN PROVIDE SPAC FOR: LIGHTWELLS, VERTICAL CIRCULATION, PASSIVE VENTILATION AND SERVICE CORES.

THIS CORNER OF THE CAMPUS IS HIGHLY VISITED BECAUSE OF IT’S PROXIMITY TO THE UA MALL & RECREATIONAL FACILITIES. IN A 1/4 MILE RADIUS OF THE SITE, THERE IS NOT MUCH GREEN SPACE AND WHAT EXISTS IS NARROW AREAS COVERED WITH GRASS WHITHOUT SO MUCH DIVERSITY IN TERMS OF SHAPE AND RICHNESS. ON THE OTHER HAND, IN 1/2 MILE DISTANCE FROM THE SITE, THERE IS A WASH WITH A HIGH LEVEL OF RICHNESS.

THE GOAL IS TO DESIGN A BUILDING THAT FUNCTIONS AS AN ECOLOGICAL PATCH. THE IDEA IS TO CARVE OUT A STEREOTYPE BOX LIKE THE WAY A RIVER CARVES OUT A LANDSCAPE IN A DESERT AND SHAPES CANYONS INSIDE THEM WHERE DUE TO OVERLAPING EDGE OF THE LAYERS, THERE IS VARIOUS LEVELS OF ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATIONAL BUILDINGS FORCES CREATING MICROCLIMATES FOR THE PLANTS AND WILDLIFE. IRAN PAVILION AT MILANO EXPO
PROJECT INFO UNDERGRAD THESIS PROJECT, SPRING 2015, INDIVIDUAL PROJECT
CONCEPT STATEMENT TODAY’S WORLD EXPOS SHOULD NOT BE LIMITED TO MONUMENTAL ARCHITECTURE. THEY SHOULD ABOVE ALL BE EVENTS WHERE USERS ARE CONFRONTED WITH AND INTERACT ON THE MAJOR CHALLENGES FACED BY HUMANITY. THE IDEA IS TO CREATE A SENSE OF PLACE WHICH IS NOT OBSTRUCTED BY VERTICAL BUILDINGS BUT INSTEAD DEVELOPED WITH HORIZONTAL CONSTRUCTIONS WHICH MAKES A PLEASANT CONTRAST BETWEEN ALTERNATING FULL AND EMPTY SPACES. SO I DECIDED TO UTILIZE GEOMETRIC PATTERNS TO RE-CREATE CLASSICAL IRANIAN ARCHS IN A UNIVERSAL FORMATION.
AZADI TOWER CEILING, TEHRAN, IRAN 21
CONSTRAINTS THE LOT’S MAXIMUM COVERAGE RATE IS 70% OF THE LOT, EXCLUDING SETBACKS. THE HEIGHT OF THE COVERED PART OF EXHIBITION SPACE MUST BE LESS THAN 39 FEET. THE WORLD THE EXHIBITION SPACES MAY HAVE MULTIPLE ENTRANCES/EXITS ON DIFFERENT SIDES OF THE LOT INCLUDING DIFFERENTIATED ACCESS FOR DISABLED, SPECIAL RESERVED VISITORS, WORKERS AND SUPPLIES/WASTE. AVENUE (DECUMANS) CANNOT ALLOW THE ENTRANCES, THOUGH THE EXITS WILL BE ALLOWED.

THE FOLDING PROCESS 1.IRAN LOT SIZE CONSTRAINTS VS. THE NEIGHBOR LOT 2. APPLYING THE ISLAMIC DIAGONAL PATTERN TO THE BOX 3.PUSHING THE CENTER POINT OF POLYGONS DOWNWARD TO CREATE ABSTRACT ARCHS 4.TAKING THE SIDE FACES OUT TO PROVIDE FREE FLOW OF CURCULATION AND VENTILATION 5.EXTRACTING POLYGONS TO EMPHASIZE THE REQUIRED ENTRANCES AND EXITS 6.REMOVING POLYGONS TO PUT ADMIN BUILDINGS AND SERVICE SPACES 7.REMOVING THE END POLYGONS TO ACCOMMODATE THE PERSIAN GARDEN 8.ISOMETRIC CONCEPT DIAGRAM

THERMAL COMFORT IN MILAN SUMMER AS IT CAN BE SEEN IN THE THERMAL AND INSOLATION ANALYSES, ACTIVE VENTILATION SYSTEMS ARE NOT REQUIRED INSIDE THE PAVILION FOR MOST OF THE TIME CONSIDERING SUSTAINABLE STRATEGIES WHICH APPLIED TO ENHANCE THE PAVILION’S ENERGY EFFICIENCY. SOME OF THESE STRATEGIES ARE INDICATED BELOW:
OVERHANGS LEAD TO PASSIVE COMFORT COOLING
OPERABLE NETTED WALLS TO MAXIMIZE PASSIVE VENTILATION
LIGHT-COLORED MATERIALS MINIMIZES HEAT GAIN
UPTURNED MODULES FOR RAINWATER HARVESTING
LIGHTWEIGHT CONSTRUCTION WITH SLAB ON GRADE
SHADED OUTDOOR ZONES TOWARD PREVAILING BREEZES
BIRD-EYE VIEW PERSPECTIVE 24
SMALL CARBON FOOTPRINT DUE TO THE 2015 EXPO SUSTAINABILITY PRINCIPLES, THE MINIMUM LEVEL OF INTERFERENCE IN THE GROUND WAS NEEDED. SO A LIGHT-WEIGHT STRUCTURE WAS CHOSEN TO CREATE A FLUID SENSE OF SPACE IN THE GROUND FLOOR WITH AS FEW PHYSICAL BARRIERS AS POSSIBLE BY REDUCING THE VAST UNDERGROUND FOUNDATIONS. 1. SETTING STEEL COLMUNS IN CONCRETE FOUNDATION
2. CONNECTING SLANT COLUMNS BY STEEL CABLES
3. INSTALING THE TENSILE ENVELOPE IN A MODULE

TASTES CORRIDOR THE CONCEPT WAS TO RE-CREATE CLASSICAL IRANIAN ARCHS IN A UNIVERSAL FORMATION. IT ENDED UP IN DESIGNING A FRAME GRIDDED BY TEN CABLES IN A GEOMETRIC ORDER (THE STRUCTURAL MESH OF TENSILE STRUCTURE) AS AN ABSTRACT ARC. THE WHOLE STRUCTURE IS A COMBINATION OF POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE MODULES. VISITORS WILL GET INSPIRED BY DWELLING BESIDE POSITIVE SPACES AND MOVING THROUGH NEGATIVE ONES. IN ADDITION, TRANSPARENT FRAMES WILL CREATE FLUID SHADOWS ON THE GROUND SO THE GROUND FLOOR IS CONCEIVED AS A FLUID SPATIAL EXCHANGE BETWEEN EXTERNAL AND INTERNAL SPACES, SO THAT A CONTINUOUS AND COHESIVE VISUAL NARRATIVE IS CREATED.
26
27
FOOD AND CULTURE THE EXPO FOCUSES ON “FEEDING THE PLANET, ENERGY FOR LIFE” AS THE MAIN THEME WHICH IS BASED ON THE UNITED NATIONS MILLENNIUM DEVELOPMENT GOALS AND PARTICIPANTS SHOULD OFFER THEIR SPECIFIC TRADITIONS AND CULTURAL IDENTITIES WITHIN THEIR SPACES IN ORDER TO INSTRUCT VISITORS. AMONG 7 EXPO SUB-THEMES, FOOD AND CULTURE WAS CHOSEN BY THE IRANIAN COMMISSION.

VISITOR EXPERIENCE I CHOSE THE HUMORAL THEORY IN ORDER TO REPRESENT THE ENGAGING QUALITY OF THE TRADITIONAL IRANIAN GASTRONOMIC CULTURE THAT IS A PART OF EVERYONE’S DAILY ROUTINE WHICH MAY ENCOURAGE VISITORS TO APPLY WHAT THEY HAVE LEARNT FROM EXPO IN THEIR LIFE. IN THE PAST WHEN THE WORLD WAS NOT AS DEVELOPED AS TODAY, IRANIAN MEDICINE SCIENCE PRINCIPLES WAS BASED ON INDIVIDUAL’S TEMPERAMENT. ACCORDING TO THESE THEORIES EACH PERSON EITHER HAS A HOT TEMPERAMENT OR A COLD TEMPERAMENT.
2.TASTES CORRIDOR

A SEMI-OPEN CORRIDOR WHERE THERE ARE FOODS FROM ALL 4 TEMPERAMENTS CATEGORIES WHERE VISITORS WILL FIND OUT THEIR OWN TEMPERAMENT
A MULTI FUNCTIONAL SPACE WHICH CAN BE USED AS A LOBBY, AN EXIBITIONS AREA OR AN STAGE FOR INFORMAL PERFORMANECES
29
EPHEMERAL STRUCTURE DETAIL A TENSILE ROOFING STRUCTURE WAS CHOSEN IN ORDER TO FOLLOW TEMPORARINESS NATURE OF THE EXPO PAVILIONS, CONSIDERING THE FACT THAT THE EXPO SITE IS PLANNED TO BE A FARM PARK SO IT NEEDS TO BE REMOVED AFTER THE EXHIBITION PERIOD. MOREOVER, TENSILE ROOFING STRUCTURE AS AN EXPOSED ONE INVOLVES PEOPLE NOT ONLY IN THE CONTENT BUT ALSO IN THE TECHNICAL MATTERS.

THE VISITORS’ PARTICIPATION WOULD BE COMPLEMENTED BY GASTRONOMIC EXPERIENCES SUCH THAT THE VISITORS WILL BE ABLE TO TRY WHAT THEY HAVE LEARNT FROM THE EXPOSITION IN THEIR OWN LIVES. IN ORDER TO INSTRUCT VISITORS IN CULTURAL, ENVIRONMENTAL AND TECHNOLOGICAL ASPECTS AS WELL, PARTICIPANTS ARE ASKED NOT ONLY TO ILLUSTRATE THE THEME IN STATIC ARCHITECTURAL SCENARIO, BUT ALSO IT SHOULD BE REFLECTED IN INTERACTIVE EXHIBITION CONTENTS INCLUDING MULTIMEDIA AND EVENTS.

TENSILE ROOFING STRUCTURE AS AN EXPOSED ONE INVOLVES PEOPLE NOT ONLY IN THE CONTENT BUT ALSO IN THE TECHNICAL MATTERS. THE OTHER UNIQUE FEATURE OF TENSILE STRUCTURES IS THAT IT CAN BE INSTALLED, DISMANTLED AND REASSEMBLED IN ANOTHER LOCATION AFTER THE EXHIBITION IS OVER SOONER THAN OTHER STRUCTURAL SYSTEMS WHICH MEANS AN INTEGRATED PROCESS FOR REUSE AND RECYCLING OF CONSTRUCTION MATERIALS.

MARANA COLONIAS
PROJECT INFO MULTIDISCIPLINARY STUDIO, SPRING 2017, GROUP WORK
PROJECT STATEMENT A TEAM OF GRADUATE STUDENTS FROM THE COLLEGE OF ARCHITECTURE, PLANNING, AND LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE INTERDISCIPLINARY DESIGN STUDIO PARTNERED WITH THE TOWN OF MARANA FOR A PROJECT FOCUSED ON MARANA’S SEVEN ORIGINAL NEIGHBORHOODS. THROUGH BACKGROUND RESEARCH, GIS ANALYSIS, SITE ANALYSIS, AND EXTENSIVE PUBLIC PARTICIPATION, THE RESEARCH TEAM CREATED A SET OF DESIGN AND PLANNING RECOMMENDATIONS TO GUIDE THE TOWN OF MARANA IN IMPROVING CONDITIONS IN THE ORIGINAL NEIGHBORHOODS. THE GOAL IS TO PROVIDE THE TOWN OF MARANA WITH A MORE COMPLETE UNDERSTANDING OF THE CURRENT CONDITIONS WITHIN THE SEVEN COLONIAS. THIS WILL SUPPORT MARANA’S EFFORTS TO OBTAIN COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT BLOCK GRANT (GDBG) FUNDING FOR UPGRADING INFRASTRUCTURE IN THESE NEIGHBORHOODS. TO PROMOTE THE HERITAGE OF THE HISTORIC NEIGHBORHOODS THAT ARE DESIGNATED AS COLONIAS. THIS GOAL WAS ACHIEVED THROUGH RESEARCH AND DOCUMENTATION OF THE CHARACTER AND CULTURE OF THESE NEIGHBORHOODS AND THROUGH PUBLIC OUTREACH.
PROJECT TEAM, UOFA, TUCSON, AZ 37
PHASE I|MASTER PLAN THERE ARE 7 COLONIAS IN MARANA TOWN. “COLONIA” IS A DEPARTMENT OF HOUSING AND URBAN DEVELOPMENT DESCRIBING A COMMUNITY “WITH MARGINAL CONDITIONS RELATED TO HOUSING & INFRASTRUCTURE.” THESE COLONIAS ARE ALL SCATTERED AROUND WITHOUT ANY CONNECTIONS.
SMALL, RECREATION BASED, NOT VERY COSTLY TO DESIGN OR IMPLEMENT
MARANA TOWN THE IDEA WAS TO PROMOTE WALKABILITY, RECREATION & IMPROVE CONTIGUOUS LINKS, SO EACH NODE IS PLACED 1 MILE APART. THE DRIVING GOAL IS TO CREATE CONNECTED COMMUNITY THAT RECOGNIZES ITS HISTORY AND IS PLANNED FOR FUTURE GROWTH CONSIDERING THE COMMUNITY PRIORITIES.

PROJECT INFO LANDSCAPE DESIGN STUDIO III, FALL 2016, INDIVIDUAL PROJECT
CONCEPT STATEMENT THE CITY OF TUCSON HAS A 11.92" AVERAGE ANNUAL RAINFALL LOCATED IN THE SONORAN DESERT. THIS AMOUNT OF PRECIPITATION IS NOT VERY MUCH IN THE CONTEXT OF A DESERT AND IN COMPARISON, TO THE OTHER PLACES ACROSS THE UNITED STATES. ON THE OTHER HAND, A LARGE AMOUNT OF THIS WATER IS JUST POURED INTO THE RIVERS AND GET OUT OF TUCSON. THE CITY HAS A TRAIL CALLED THE LOOP TURNS AROUND THE CITY ALONG THE RIVER BUT THERE IS NO CONNECTION IN THE MIDDLE. CONSIDERING THE AMOUNT OF WATER WHICH IS WASTED RATHER THAN IRRIGATING NATIVE PLANTS WHICH ARE DRY ON WATER, CONNECTING TUCSON SEPARATED PARK SYSTEM VIA A COMMUNITY AMENITY AND MOVING TOWARDS MAKING TUCSON A SUSTAINABLE CITY IN THE DESERT, THE LINEAR PARK SYSTEM IS DESIGNED. IT IS LOCATED ALONG THE STONE AVENUE BETWEEN FROM DOWNTOWN TO THE TUCSON MALL INTRODUCING THE RAPID PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION SYSTEM TO ENGAGE MORE PEOPLE INTO THE TUCSON LINEAR PARK.

“THE WORST IDEA WE'VE EVER HAD IS SUBURBAN SPRAWL. IT'S BEING EMULATED IN MANY PLACES AS WE SPEAK. BY SUBURBAN SPRAWL, I REFER TO THE REORGANIZATION OF THE LANDSCAPE AND THE CREATION OF THE LANDSCAPE AROUND THE REQUIREMENT OF AUTOMOBILE USE, AND THAT THE AUTOMOBILE THAT WAS ONCE AN INSTRUMENT OF FREEDOM HAS BECOME A GAS-BELCHING, TIME-WASTING AND LIFETHREATENING PROSTHETIC DEVICE THAT MANY OF US NEED JUST TO, MOST AMERICANS, IN FACT, NEED, JUST TO LIVE THEIR DAILY LIVES.” JEFF SPECK

SHOPPING MALLS ARE DYING ACCORDING TO ELLEN DUNHAMJONES, AN ARCHITECT AND PROFESSOR AT GEORGIA TECH, THERE ARE ABOUT 1,200 ENCLOSED MALLS IN THE UNITED STATES, AND ABOUT ONE-THIRD OF THEM ARE DEAD OR DYING. IN 2017, MORE THAN 6,400 STORES CLOSED AND 3,600 ARE EXPECTED TO SHUTTER IN 2018. SHE BELIEVES THAT ““THE MALLS DIED FOR A REASON, WE WERE WAY OVER-RETAILED.” THE DIAGRAM BELOW SHOWS THE LOOP OF CONSEQUENCES THAT FACES THE MALLS.

CONTEXT MAP
PHASE A | TUCSON MALL AREA RE-DESIGN TUCSON MALL IS A MASSIVE 2 STORY BUILDING (ABOUT 50 FEET HIGH) WITH A LINEAR SKYLIGHT AT CENTER HAT CONNECTS THE SPACES TOGETHER. IT WAS DESIGNED DURING THE GROWING AUTOMOBILE ERA WHEN MASSIVE NUMBER OF PARKING SLOTS WAS DESIRABLE. ONE OF THE MAJOR GAPS OF THE TUCSON LOOP PARK ALONG THE RIVER IS AT THE TUCSON MALL AREA.

KEEPING THE MALL ALIVE THE CONCEPT TO KEEP THE MALL ALIVE IS TO PROVIDE HUMAN SCALE, COMFORT AND ACTIVITY INTO IT. FOR BRINGING HUMAN SCALE INTO IT, THE DESIGN STRATEGY IS TO KEEP THE DOUBLE-HEIGHT SKYLIGHT STRUCTURE BUT TO REMOVE THE ROOF ON ITS SIDES. THE REMODELING WILL BE COMPLEMENTED BY INTRODUCING AN ORGANIC SHAPED GREY-WATER CREEK UNDERNEATH THE SKYLIGHT.
THE EXISTING SKYLIGHT FUNCTIONS AS A NURSE PLANT, BY PROVIDING SHADE AND REFUGE FOR THE PLANTS AND PEOPLE UNDERNEATH

RUNOFF
COVER CROP
WATER MANAGEMENT THE ROOF RUNOFF IS MANAGED BY THE CREEK AS A VEGETATED BIOSWALE AND THE SURFACE STORMWATER IS MANAGED THROUGH A SERIES OF DETENTION BASINS. THE TERRACED ARRANGMENT OF BASINS PROVIDES THE HIGHEST EFFICIENCY TO CAPTURE THE WATER BEFORE RELASING IT TO THE RIVER. IN CASE OF SEVERE STORMS, THE STORMWATER WETLANDS ARE DESIGNED AS THE FINAL STEP OF THIS TERRACED CONFIGURATION.
THE BIOSWALES COLLECTS GREYWATER FROM MIXED-USE SPACES. WHERE MULTIPLE BRANCHES MEET IN A NODE, THEY CREATE MICRO-CLIMATES.

ADAPTING EXISTING STRUCTURES AN EXISTING PARKING GARRAGE ON THE NORTH SIDE OF THE MALL IS REPURPOSED AS A MOVIE THEATER ON TOP AND A PLAYGROUND BENEATH. THE REMNANT COLUMNS OF THE GARRAGE DEFINE THE PATH TO MALL FROM THE LOOP ENTRANCE. SURFACE PARKING SPOTS ARE REPLACED WITH 3 MULTI-STORY PARKING GARRAGES ON THE SOUTHEAST AND NORTHWEST CORNERS OF THE SITE.

THE GOAL IS TO CREATE A FREE FLOW. IN CASE OF VEHICULAR ONE, SPEEDWAY BLVD. GOES UNDER SURFACE WHILE PEDESTRIANS CROSS THE OVERPASS BRIDGE BETWEEN THE INTERSECTION QUADS. EACH SPACE IS DESIGNED AROUND A NODE. EDGES ALONG PATHS ARE ACTIVIATED BY RECREATIONAL, COMMERICAL & RESIDENTAL SPACES.

PHASE C | SPEEDWAY AND STONE INTERSECTION DURING MY FIELD OBSERVATIONS, I REALIZIED PEOPLE CUT THROUGH THE VACANT LOTS AND PARKING SPACES A LOT. SO THE PEDESTRIAN CIRCULATION IS DIAGONAL THROUGH THE 4 NODES ON THE 4 SIDES OF INTERSECTION. SPEEDWAY IS AN ARTERIAL ROAD WHERE FAST TRAVEL IS PREFERED. WHEREAS, STONE IS A HISTORIC AVENUE WITH A LOT OF RESIDENTIAL AND COMMERCIAL SPACES TO STOP AND INTERACT WITH.
