The Best Pest Control Methods When You’ve Been Invaded By Julie Achtermeier

No one likes bugs, least of all in their homes. So, when those little critters invade your living space, there are a few ways you can handle them. Some insects are harmless, but a nuisance and others are a health hazard. Here are the top three annoying insects and how to get rid of them.

Topping any list of bothersome pests are bedbugs. These small, wingless insects feed on the blood of people and animals while they sleep and are easily transported from room to room on infested objects. They cannot fly or jump and have a wide, oval and flat body and range in size from 1.5 to 10mm. Bedbugs feed at night as they are attracted to the carbon dioxide we exhale when we breathe. They typically hide under mattresses, inside box springs and in night tables. If you discover you have bedbugs, it is strongly recommended you hire a licensed professional pest control company. If you are renting a room or apartment, tell your landlord right away. Professional pest control operators often use liquid or powder insecticide, diatomaceous earth, and steam/heat treatments. These methods must be used with physical control methods such as vacuuming, washing, throwing out unwashable items, heating and freezing. If you have been given instructions by a professional, follow them to the letter.

Ants Many types of ants can invade your home, and while some are bothersome, others like carpenter ants can cause structural damage to homes as they destroy the wood to build their nests. A key indication you have carpenter ants are little piles of sawdust around your house. The most effective way to get rid of ants is to prevent them in the first place. Ants send out “scouts” to search for food, and as they roam around, they leave a scented trail for the workers to follow to the food source. Removing all traces of food sources is the best way to deter ants. Keep kitchen counters clean and sweep floors often. Rinse containers before putting them in the recycling bin and keep sugar in a glass jar with a sealed lid. Place pet food bowls in a shallow pan of water so ants can’t reach the food and empty kitchen garbage often. Do an inspection around the foundation and exterior walls and seal any visible cracks. Diatomaceous earth (crushed microscopic marine fossils) can be placed in cracks as a non-chemical solution. The powder scratches the outer skin of insects and causes them to dehydrate and die. It is non-toxic to humans and pets, but should not be inhaled, and will remain active as long as it stays dry.

Ladybugs Ladybugs, a highly beneficial insect for farmers, have become increasingly problematic since the introduction of the multicoloured Asian lady beetle in the late 1970s. This species was introduced to protect crops from aphids, a small insect known to destroy crops. Ladybugs become a problem in the fall when they gather in large numbers and invade homes and garages looking for a place to hide for the winter. Once a cluster of bugs has worked its way inside, they become confused and gather on the walls, ceilings and windows looking for a way out. Many die off, but others lay clusters of 10 to 50 tiny eggs creating an invasion that can last several days or weeks. Ladybugs can live up to three years in the right environment. Prevention is the only weapon against these critters. Caulking and weather stripping the sunniest sides of your home are key ways to prevent them from making their way inside. Plug any visible holes and seal gaps and cracks. Once they’re inside, there are very few treatment options. Sweeping and bagging them are your only recourse. There are no pesticides currently available to rid a ladybug infestation. When it comes to any sort of insect or pest, your best defence is a good offence. Stock up on caulking and get to work sealing all those cracks before the cold weather comes.

Bear in mind your credit score is built over a lifetime of spending. Keep an eye on your score and track how your spending habits affect it.

BUILD CREDIT

Those with low or no credit must build a healthy credit score. This includes paying all bills on time each month and maintaining a low credit utilization ratio, which is a ratio of how much credit you use out of your available credit limit. Other ways to build credit include factoring existing payments into your report, such as student loans (automatically included) and rent.

DO YOUR HOMEWORK

Research mortgages and interest rates. While placing a larger down payment will lower your monthly mortgage payment, don’t put down more than you can afford. Keep in mind, also, that you will need money for closing costs, including a home inspection, before you can purchase your home. Remember, Chaplin says, that improving your credit can take time. If your finances aren’t in shape for a home now, that doesn’t mean homeownership isn’t a realistic goal for the future. Talk to a reputable mortgage lender to discuss your options, even if you have a lower credit score, there might be a loan that is right for you. Mortgage insurance is another possibility; borrowers with a low credit score may need to pay for mortgage insurance. Mortgage insurance lowers the risk to the lender of making a loan to you, so you may be able to qualify for a loan that you might not otherwise be able to get.
