Welcome to our region! As you look through this guide I trust you will notice that there is a great deal to enjoy in our area and that the space on the map between Belfast to Bangor, Bangor to Ellsworth and back again, has a lot to offer. One of the best things about Maine is the diversity of its small towns from fishing ports to great spots along our rivers and ponds. There is an entrepreneurial spirit here that I have not encountered any other place I have lived. That spirit creates a huge variety of shops and services that are owned and operated by men and women that live, work and care about right here. When you support our local businesses you are supporting the entire community. Every one of these hard working individuals gives time, talent and money to make this area the best place to Eat, Play, Shop and Stay. Make sure you thank them when you walk through their doors and tell them “the Chamber sent you! The Bucksport Bay Area Chamber of Commerce is organized to promote the prosperity and quality of life in our area so that the citizens and business community will thrive. One of our many objectives, and part of our strategic plan, is connecting business to community. We have found one of the best ways to achieve this goal is to have a diverse, enthusiastic and involved membership. If you are a business owner, we invite you to join the Chamber and get personally involved in working with us toward achieving our goals and ensuring the continued success of your communities. Wishing you prosperity, Leslie Wombacher Executive Director Bucksport Bay Area Chamber of Commerce

BUCKSPORT Located at the mouth of the Penobscot River, Bucksport is the perfect intersection of history, nature, trade, and culture. A walk along the town’s million-dollar walkway gives visitors a glorious view of the tidal harbor and of Fort Knox, a fully casemated granite fort (circa 1844). Also visible from the walkway is the Penobscot Narrows Bridge & Observatory, an impressive piece of engineering, and a working paper mill with its own biomass generator. You can find Bucksport #1 on the trail map of the Schoodic International Sculpture Symposium with its breathtaking “Before the Wind” sculpture located at Flag Point on the waterfront. The Annual Bucksport Arts Festival will gather artists and craftspeople in a beautiful waterfront location overlooking Penobscot Bay on August 15, 2015. At the east end of the walkway, pedestrians can gaze across the river at the spot on Verona Island where Admiral Robert Peary’s ship Roosevelt was built in 1905 for his landmark expeditions toward the North Pole. Those interested in the rich history of the area can visit the Bucksport Historical Society, located along the riverfront walkway or the Buck Memorial Library on Main Street. Bucksport’s Main Street boasts its own independent bookseller, BookStacks, where visitors can grab a cup of coffee and buy new and used books, browse hundreds of magazines, purchase local and national newspapers, and check their email using the free Wi-Fi. Main Street also features its own independent movie theater, The Alamo, supported by Northeast Historic Film, which is headquartered at the same location. From Mid-May through October, you can visit our thriving Farmers’ Market every Thursday from 2pm to 5pm also located on Main Street. Wednesdays on Main will schedule activities

that bring energy, fun, and joy to Main Street on Wednesday evenings from 5pm to 7pm throughout the summer. A summer jaunt into Bucksport means visitors can enjoy a favorite local treat, an ice cream from Wahl’s Dairy Port, known to locals as “the ice cream parlor.” For those wanting to wet their whistle or grab a bite to eat, several year-round restaurants cater to those seeking everything from fresh seafood to vegetable chow mein. Options include Chinese cuisine, pub-style dining and a family-friendly harbor-side eatery with outdoor seating. The Annual Bucksport Bay Festival draws tens of thousands of visitors to town each summer for food, fun, and fireworks, with other seasonal celebrations including a Halloween-themed Ghostport festival and winter-themed Frost Fest. Dozens of miles of hiking trails are available free to the public year-round for hiking, jogging, snowshoeing or crosscountry skiing, and dogs on leashes are welcome. Within half an hour of downtown Bucksport, there are also 11 lakes and pond, many of which are open to the public for swimming, fishing, kayaking and boating, as well as sites for camping, hiking, horseback riding, snowmobiling, and mountain biking. And for those looking for a break on the long car ride to Bar Harbor or points east along the coast, Bucksport offers two excellent playgrounds within minutes of Main Street. For those wishing to extend their stay, local accommodations include an off-grid lakeside B7B, two motor inns and a Hotel with water views. The Bucksport Bay Area Chamber of Commerce, located on Main Street, welcomes visitors year-round and includes an information booth that is open 24 hours a day.

ORLAND The Town of Orland was incorporated in 1800, formerly known as “Plantation #2” on the east side of the Penobscot River. As of the year 2000, the population was 2,150 people. Orland is home to many local businesses and campgrounds. It is a great place to visit if you enjoy hiking the great outdoors surrounded by spectacular views. Orland River Day is a town celebration held each year on the last Saturday in June (rain or shine) complete with a parade, food, crafts, a “Downeast” raft race and River Duck Dash! Be on hand to watch 1,000 rubber ducks dash down the Narramissic River. This will be the 40th year for this day of celebration. The

PROSPECT The most prominent landmark in Prospect is Fort Knox, a large 19th-century fort. It is now a major attraction, as is the Penobscot Narrows Bridge Observatory. Named for Revolutionary War General Henry Knox, construction on the huge fort started in 1844. With its brick arches, underground passages and enormous guns, it was intended to protect Bangor and its important lumber industry from the British. Fort Knox was never completed or needed but construction was finally halted after the Civil War and is now the most popular historic site in Maine. Adjacent to the fort and crossing the river

Orland River Day will be held this year June 27, 2015. Great Pond Mountain Conservation Trust is a charitable nonprofit organization founded in 1993 to conserve land, water and wildlife habitat for the communities of northwestern Hancock County. GPMCT manages the Wildlands in Orland for wildlife habitat, recreation, education and sustainable forestry. The property is open to the public year-round for a variety of uses. Welcome uses of the Wildlands include hiking, bicycling, horseback riding, fishing, hunting, and more.

VERONA ISLAND The island and community has undergone numerous name changes. The name was changed to Verona (after Verona, Italy) upon its incorporation as a town on February 18, 1861. The town lengthened its name to Verona Island on March 27, 2004. The island was once a ship building village. In 1905 the last vessel was built. This was the Roosevelt, which carried

Fort Knox and the Observatory are worth a long day’s visit any time, and Fort Knox has many special events throughout the year, including psychic and medieval fairs, guided ghost tours, pirate festival, battle reenactments; and the annual, well-known, Halloween scare fest, Fright at the Fort. bucksportbaychamber.com

Searsport was on Penobscot Bay, which has been a major influence on the town’s development. Settled in the late 18th Century and incorporated as a town in 1845. It has nearly 10 miles of coastline. During Searsport’s early history, its major industry was shipbuilding and cargo handling. The seaport town was famous for its sea captains in the mid-1800’s and was once home to ten percent of all American deep20

and other activities. With its direct water access and public boat ramp, Frankfort has great boating and fishing opportunities. Mount Waldo offers hiking, blueberry picking, and an old granite quarry to explore. Access is on Mount Waldo Road. There are many acres of town-owned forest, and the Frankfort ATV Club maintains good riding trails.

Incorporated in 1788, the Town of Orrington is located at the southern tip of Penobscot County nestled on the mighty Penobscot River between Brewer and Bucksport. Today Orrington is a predominantly rural and
