Greetings

On behalf of the Board and Members of the Kennebec Valley Chamber of Commerce, I want to welcome you to Maine’s Capital region. Augusta, Maine’s Capital City, and its neighboring cities and towns are rich in history, culture, industry and commerce. Dozens of lakes and streams, the mighty Kennebec River and beautiful rolling, forested hills of the Capital area offer residents and visitors a unique natural environment and a high quality of life. As the seat of State and County Government and a major hub of business and industry, the Capital area harbors a vibrant economy and offers opportunities for new business development. Business trends are very positive in the Kennebec Valley, thanks in large part to two major construction projects: the new $312 million MaineGeneral Hospital and a large portion of the $1.4 billion Maine Power Reliability Project transmission line. In addition, two pipeline companies began delivering natural gas to industrial, commercial, and residential customers in 2013. This new energy source will reduce dependence on foreign oil and create competitive opportunities for current and new businesses. The Kennebec Valley is a special place and we take great pride in the numerous opportunities available here. Enjoy your stay here and call the Chamber if we can be of assistance. Sincerely,

Ross H. Cunningham

Business & Industry

The Kennebec Valley Chamber of Commerce is a business association of over 700 businesses, industries and organizations in the greater Augusta region, southern Kennebec County. The Chamber’s teamwork approach is key in building a stronger economy, better business environment and higher quality of life for the 75,000 citizens in the 23-community area. While government provides nearly four of every ten jobs in the region, other large employers include major distribution companies, health organizations, the state’s largest electric utility headquarters, natural gas headquarters, financial institutions, growing retail centers and statewide non-profit associations’ headquarters. Examples of manufacturers include Alternative Manufacturing (computer components) Kenway Corp. (paper industry products, boats and specialty composites), Kennebec Technologies (high tech and space products) Bolduc Technology Group (driveby-wire products for vehicles) and a number of wood products specialists. The area is headquarters for the state’s largest electric utility, Central Maine Power Company, and includes major distributors such as NRF Distributors (flooring), PERFORMANCE Foodservice –NorthCenter and Pine State Trading (food service companies). Summit Natural Gas of Maine built a major pipeline through the Valley in 2013 and established its headquarters in Augusta. Maine Natural Gas also built a pipeline to Augusta to serve both commercial and residential customers. Health services in this central part of the state 8

are provided by Waterville and Augusta campuses of MaineGeneral Health, which includes a teaching unit associated with Dartmouth Medical School. MaineGeneral opened a state-of-the-art Alfond Cancer Care Center in Augusta in 2007 and in 2013 completed its $312 million hospital in Augusta to serve a population of 180,000 primarily in Kennebec and Somerset Counties. Other health facilities include the VA Maine Healthcare System, Home Resources of Maine, HealthReach Network home services and a number of others. Bright Future: The Capital area has grown significantly in retail business in the past decade with the addition of some major new retailers and redevelopment of others. The Marketplace at Augusta is the largest open air shopping mall north of Boston with 40 stores in about 1.3 million square feet of retail space, with significant expansions planned for the future. In late 2007 Augusta Crossing stores opened another 450,000 square feet of retail space, including Target and Lowe’s. Hannaford Supermarkets manages five large grocery stores and a large distribution center in the Augusta Micropolitan. In 2009 Hannaford built the World’s First Platinum LEED’s grocery in the center of the capital. Consumer retail sales in the Augusta Micropolitan total about $935 million. Augusta boasts several modern business parks, Gardiner opened a very successful industrial park in 1999 and Winthrop has refurbished an old downtown woolen mill, now home to MaineGeneral Medical Care Center and a mix of tenants.

Augusta

CITY OF

Population: 19,235 Municipal Phone Number: (207) 626-2300 Located on both sides of the Kennebec River, Augusta is the hub of employment, commerce and service for Central Maine, as well as the seat of state and county government. Augusta is a one-hour drive from Portland, less than three hours drive from Boston. While the City’s population is only 19,235 the City is the service center to a large area of approximately 70,000 people – and more recently has become a retail shopping mecca for a population of over 350,000 Maine residents. Augusta is a city rich in history. From its early days as a Pilgrim trading post, the City has grown as an industrial and trade center and has become a center for the region’s health and educational services. Joint public and private efforts have resulted in the

development of the Augusta Business Park, Augusta Civic Center Complex, downtown redevelopment and regional retail shopping centers. The City Hall Complex, including a renovated Old Fort Western museum complex, now graces the banks of the Kennebec. The State and Federal Highway departments completed a new $30 million river crossing in Augusta that links the Interstate 95 and the West Augusta business sector with the less-developed East Side. In addition to providing opportunity for new business and residential growth, this bridge facilitates travel to several key coastal communities. Recreational opportunities and unique cultural activities play an important role of life in Augusta - a great community, in a convenient location, with friendly people and a stable and vigorous economy.

Belgrade

TOWN OF

Population: 3,189 Municipal Phone Number: (207) 495-2258 Belgrade is located just a few miles northwest of Maine’s capital city, Augusta. Our current population is estimated to be about 3,000 year-round citizens, and that number nearly doubles when non-residents arrive to spend the summer months at their cottages. There is only one working farm remaining in Belgrade, and the town has become what many call a “bedroom community” composed of people who

reside here but who work elsewhere. Employment in town is limited, with two lumber companies and a manufacturer of concrete products employing most locals. Small businesses such as restaurants and country stores provide a few year-round jobs, with rental cottages, boys/girls camps, marinas and a golf course adding part-time positions in the summer. Belgrade covers about sixty square miles, with a large part of this area composed of lakes, streams and wetlands. Its five lakes and their inlet/outlet streams offer several species of fish for those who enjoy fishing, plenty of water surface for boaters, and excellent opportunities for those people interested in bird watching. With the forest acreage expanding, as former farmland reverts to tree growth, deer, moose and birds have become more plentiful for people to enjoy.

TOWNS OF

CHELSEA

Chelsea, Randolph & Pittston

Population: 2,721 Municipal Phone: (207) 582-4802

Chelsea, incorporated on March 1, 1851 from a portion of Hallowell, was named for a Massachusetts town, which in turn was named for a section of London, England. The town office hosts the Chelsea veterans memorial and a smaller memorial plaque to Chester Caldwell “For his many years of service to the school and a dedicated ‘Town Father.’” Chelsea Market, the Grange Hall, Fire Station and the School are all near the town office on the Togus Road (Route 226). The principal stream is the Worromontogus, or “Togus,” which runs southward through the eastern part and falls into the Kennebec. There is a saw and grist mill on this stream, toward the southern part of the town. In the northern part is one of the United States military asylums. The mineral spring at this place formerly had some notoriety, and Mr. Beal, of Boston, erected a large hotel near it. The enterprise did not prove profitable, and the property was sold. Aside from Togus, the principal settlement is near the bridge connecting the town with Hallowell. Along the river are a few ice-houses, and near the southern line is one of the large houses owned by the Knickerbocker Ice Company. The Maine Central Railroad, on the opposite side of the river, is accessible by bridge or boat. In 1867 and again in 1901, Chelsea ceded land to the “National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers” from the Civil War. (The town sent 98 soldiers to the war, 28 were killed.) The institution eventually became the Togus Veterans Hospital, then Togus Medical Center, known generally as “Togus.” RANDOLPH Population: 1,772 Municipal Phone: (207) 582-5808

Randolph, about 2 square miles in size, is about 6 miles south of Augusta and about 20 miles north of the coastal town of Wiscasset. A town of just under 2,000 residents, Randolph lies along the bank of the Kennebec River just across from the City of Gardiner. It was incorporated in 1887, and used to be a

thriving river community specializing in boats, lumber, ice and a terminal for a narrow gauge railroad to Togus Veterans Home in Chelsea. Being the smallest town in Maine (by area), it has a small town atmosphere with the proximity to all services and schools. PITTSTON Population: 2,666 Municipal Phone: (207) 582-4438

Pittston is a town along the eastern shore of the Kennebec River in Kennebec County. The town was named for the family of John Pitt, who were early settlers. The town was incorporated in 1779. The town has a total area of 33.44 square miles, of which, 32.17 square miles is land and 1.27 square miles is water. The historic Major Reuben Colburn House (a state historic site) and the Pittston Congregational Church are located in Pittston.

Dresden & Richmond

DRESDEN

Population:1,675 Municipal Phone: (207) 737-4335

Dresden was first settled as Frankfort in 1752 by German and French Huguenot immigrants. A town in Lincoln County, it incorporated on June 25, 1794 from a portion of the town of Pownalborough (later Wiscasset). The Germans, brought to the area through the encouragement of General Samuel Waldo, contributed the name Dresden after the city in their homeland. Dresden annexed land from Alna in 1741. In 1847 it set off two islands to form the Town of Perkins, which surrendered its organization in 1918 leaving the unorganized township of Perkins. The two islands are Swan Island and Little Swan Island, now a nature preserve administered by the State of Maine. The 1761 Pownalborough Courthouse was the first built in Maine and the only one built prior to the Revolution. Parson Jacob Bailey used the courthouse as a church. The Pownalborough Courthouse has hosted future U.S. President John Adams, George Washington’s first Supreme Court nominee William Cushing, Robert Treat Paine and David Sewall. It was the setting for a trial noted in midwife Martha Ballard’s diary. In 1891 an act of the Legislature was approved incorporating Bridge Academy for the ‘promotion of education, literature and science’. The Academy was endowed by members of the Bridge family for “A Free High School for the children of Dresden”. It served in that capacity for the youth of Dresden, and other ‘tuition’ students from many areas until 1966. Over 430 students earned their high school diplomas between 1892 and 1966, after which students attended Wiscasset High School. The building now houses the Bridge Academy Public Library. The historic Kennebec Bridge between Dresden and Richmond was replaced with a new, modern bridge in 2015. The Earle R. Kelley Wildlife Management Area is a 500 acre park, 290 acres of which is marshland, maintained by the State Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, 1.5 miles from the intersection of Route 27 and Blinn Hill Road. Dresden Bog, part 18

of the Management Area, is a water-accessible nature preserve.

FARMINGDALE

Population: 2,956 Municipal Phone: (207) 582-2225

Farmingdale, a town in Kennebec County, was incorporated on April 3, 1852 from parts of Gardiner, West Gardiner and Hallowell. On the Kennebec River just north of Gardiner, it is a residential community serving the Augusta-Gardiner capital area. During the 19th century and before the availability of mechanical refrigeration, there were several ice houses along the river. Ice was cut from the frozen water and stored in warehouses often insulated with sawdust. When the ice was gone, the river was clogged with logs floating downstream to paper mills further south. The career of one of Farmingdale’s noted citizens, Peter Grant, provides insights into the town’s past. According to Maine’s Historic Places, Grant was a self-made man who, at his death in 1836, left an estate of over $100,000 (equivalent to over $56 million today), including a shipyard in Farmingdale, half-ownership of four good-sized vessels, and large real estate holdings in the area. His social position is indicated by the fact that one of his sons married a daughter of Dr. Benjamin Vaughan, the patriarch of Hallowell.

HALLOWELL

Population: 2,381 Municipal Phone: (207) 623-4021

Hallowell, Maine’s smallest city, rests on the banks of the Kennebec River and it was settled about 1761. Although once a granite and lumbering community, the Hallowell of today features a delightful and interesting experience. Hallowell enjoys an eclectic blend of artisans, musicians and lifelong residents. Busy Water Street, lined with galleries, antique shops, fine restaurants and service businesses, blends into exquisite historic houses and beyond to beautiful country hiking trails and waterfalls. The small city is classified as a National Historic District. A state-operated boat landing is located on the south end of the City. It is the hub of activities during the summer months as people launch their boats to cruise the beautiful Kennebec all the way to the ocean. It is said of Hallowell that it retains the charm of yesteryear, the flavor of old world simplicity and the warmth of old-fashioned hospitality. Don’t pass up the opportunity to visit this unique little Maine city.

The town of Jefferson was included in this area and was part of the plantation of Ballstown, founded in 1770 by John Ball. Jefferson has a substantial frontage on Damariscotta Lake, both in its north end and on virtually all its western shore. Damariscotta State Park is at the northeast corner of the lake, in Jefferson.

Manchester, Maine, settled in 1775, became a town in 1850. It was made up of parts of five towns: Augusta, Readfield, Hallowell, Litchfield, and Winthrop. It was first called Kennebec, but finding that their mail often went to Kennebunk, Maine, the townspeople decided in 1854 to change the name to Manchester. The central part of town is known as the Forks, a fitting name, since seven roads meet there. Just minutes from Augusta, many small businesses flourish, surrounded by beauty. Manchester boasts a gorgeous lakeshore on Cobbosseeconte Lake. 22

Population: 3,474 Municipal Phone: (207) 724-3945

West Gardiner is a town in Kennebec County, incorporated on August 8, 1850 from a portion of Gardiner. It swapped land with Farmingdale (1852, 1853) and annexed some land from Litchfield (1856) to complete its boundaries. West Gardiner is the site of one of the Maine Turnpike Authority’s service plazas. In addition to the usual fast food providers, the plaza is home to the Center for Maine Craft. The Center features a retail gallery for handcrafted work by Maine artisans; cultural tourism information including craft artists’ studios, commercial galleries, and nonprofit arts organizations; and exhibitions of fine craft sponsored by Maine’s premier craft organizations. Farm Buildings on the Lewiston Road (Route 9/126) recall an earlier time when large farmhouses, barns, and silos dominated the landscape. In 2016 some of those features remain, but only as ghostly reminders of a bygone era.

Pet Friendly

CAPITAL AREA

We know traveling without your family pet is simply out of the question. All it takes is a little preplanning to make sure your pet’s itinerary is as full of fun as your own. Dog parks, national and state parks, outdoor eateries, camping grounds, and high-end hotels offer pet-friendly options in every corner of Maine suited to every kind of budget. Fido’s vacation can be tailored to his or her needs, enriching your own vacation experience. As you pack your bags, think about what your pet may need in an emergency. Pet travel emergency first aid kits are available from a variety of sources. Many of the items in your human first aid kit will be helpful, such as gauze, sterile and alcohol pads, tweezers, tape, and ointments. Gather the phone numbers for poison control hotlines, your veterinarian, and the emergency vet hospitals in the area you are traveling. Have copies of your pet’s health records and extra prescription medications in case you are delayed in your travels. Just like the kids, pets need water during the long stretches of car travel and possibly a comforting toy or snack. Extra blankets or towels for the crate or back seat are handy if your pet gets carsick or makes an unscheduled pit stop. Air travel is tricky business for pets and should not be taken lightly. Each airline has different requirements for pet air travel, such as early reservations, crate requirements, fees, nonstop flights, number of pets per person and total number of animals on the flight. Some area hotels, B&Bs and spacious vacation homes will advertise as pet friendly with a few conditions. Pet fees most likely apply, and rental owners have a right to refuse if your pet seems unsuitable for their property. Some establishments have packages that cater to pets that yearn for the finer things in life like a spa retreat. Whether by land, air, or sea, Vacationland is playcationland for pets of all sorts and sizes. Travel with your pet, it’s the way life should be.

Weddin Want to get hitched—without a hitch? Attention to detail can help. Whether you and your partner already know how you want your dream wedding to look or you’re open to the possibilities that will unfold during the planning process, making sure all the bases are covered can feel like a challenge. Here’s what you need to know to help minimize surprises—before and on your big day. 1. Look around for the right officiant. Maine marriages can be performed by ordained ministers, notaries, lawyers, and judges, so you have a range of options. In addition to finding someone who meets your criteria and with whom you feel comfortable, be sure to ask if the officiant requires premarital counseling. Also, find out if there’s a backup plan. For example, if the officiant has an emergency on the day of your wedding, does he or she have a qualified person who can perform the ceremony for you instead? 2. Plan ahead. If you envision yourself starting your married life at one of Maine’s popular seaside wedding venues on a Saturday during the summer months, you’re not alone. Reservations may need to be made a year or more in advance for some locations. There are plenty of beautiful Maine ocean views to be had though, so some flexibility in terms of location and day of the week could make for shorter planning times. 3. Know the rules. For ceremonies at outside venues like parks, beaches, or mountains, reservations may not be required—but popping open a celebratory bottle of champagne, setting

up chairs, or erecting an archway may not be allowed. Ask a wedding planner for advice or check the location’s website for its rules. 4. Check to see if you need an appointment. In many communities in Maine—the town clerk’s office asks that anyone applying for a marriage license make an appointment to do so. The time it takes to get an appointment can vary. However, in some of Maine’s bigger cities, no appointment is necessary to obtain a marriage license at city hall while the clerk’s office is open. Know before you go. 5. Bring your paperwork. This is especially important if you are, as Mainers say, “from away”—because you won’t be able to run home to get it. If either of you has been married previously, one of the items you’ll need to present when you apply in person for your marriage license is a certified copy of your divorce decree or your former spouse’s death certificate. (Certified copies have a raised seal; photocopies are not accepted.) For more information, visit www.maine.gov or the website of the city or town where you plan to apply for a license. 6. Have two witnesses—and an alternate plan. You will need two people to serve as witnesses of your wedding ceremony. If you’re from out of state, you will likely be able to enlist a couple of friendly Mainers to help, and, though it is not required, a backup plan is advisable. If Maine’s changeable weather makes your careful wedding-day planning go awry, you’ll want to be prepared with more than an umbrella in case it rains. Photos by Jennifer Rich Photography
