INTEREST BLAINE HOUSE (GOVERNOR’S MANSION) The Blaine House, located on the corner of State and Capitol Streets, was built in the Federalist style in 1833. In 1872, the motif was changed to Victorian & Italian style, and in 1919, noted Maine architect, John Calvin Stevens, remodeled the mansion to a semi-Colonial structure. A gift to the state from Mrs. Harriet Blaine Beal, the house has been the official residence of Maine governors since 1919. The Blaine House is open for tours by appointment only. Please call: (207) 287-2301.
MAINE STATE HOUSE Noted Boston architect Charles Bulfinch designed the original Maine Capitol, built in 1829 using granite quarried from nearby Hallowell. In 1910, another Boston architect, C. Henri Desmond, enlarged the building to double its original size. It is truly one of Maine’s architectural treasures and recently underwent a $50 million renovation. The dome rises 185 feet over the majestic Kennebec River. The Capitol Building houses both Executive and Legislative branches. Tours are available weekdays only, year round and scheduled by calling the Maine State Museum. Phone: (207) 287-2301.

COLONIAL THEATRE Built in 1913, the Colonial Theatre is located on Water Street in Augusta, Maine along the Kennebec River. The building suffered extensive damage in 1926 fire, and the rebuilt theater, completed shortly thereafter, was larger than the earlier. It featured silent films with live music until sound pictures were introduced in the late 1929. After 40 years of neglect, a group of community members formed Colonial Theatre, Inc., a nonprofit organization, to save the Colonial from demolition. In its heyday, the Colonial was a primary site for entertainment for residents before the age of automobiles, videotapes and cable TV. Today, we are in the first phase of restoring this extraordinary venue that when opened will bring cinema, the performing arts, public events, education and a broad spectrum of digital programming to downtown Augusta. The Colonial Theatre is scheduled to opening early summer, 2019.

Employment in town is limited, with two lumber companies and a manufacturer of concrete products employing most locals. Small businesses such as restaurants and country stores provide a few year-round jobs, with rental cottages, boys/girls camps, marinas and a golf course adding part-time positions in the summer. Belgrade covers about sixty square miles, with a large part of this area composed of lakes, streams and wetlands. Its five lakes and their inlet/outlet streams offer several species of fish for those who enjoy fishing, plenty of water surface for boaters, and excellent opportunities for those people interested in bird watching. With the forest acreage expanding, as former farmland reverts to tree growth, deer, moose and birds have become more plentiful for people to enjoy.
Chelsea Market, the Grange Hall, Fire Station and the School are all near the town office on the Togus Road (Route 226). The principal stream is the Worromontogus, or “Togus,” which runs southward through the eastern part and falls into the Kennebec. There is a saw and grist mill on this stream, toward the southern part of the town. In the northern part is one of the United States military asylums. The mineral spring at this place formerly had some notoriety, and Mr. Beal, of Boston, erected a large hotel near it. The enterprise did not prove profitable, and the property was sold. Aside from Togus, the principal settlement is near the bridge connecting the town with Hallowell. Along the river are a few icehouses, and near the southern line is one of the large houses owned by the Knickerbocker Ice Company. The Maine Central Railroad, on the opposite side of the river, is accessible by bridge or boat. In 1867 and again in 1901, Chelsea ceded land to the “National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers” from the Civil War. (The town sent 98 soldiers to the war, 28 were killed.) The

area through the encouragement of General Samuel Waldo, contributed the name Dresden after the city in their homeland. Dresden annexed land from Alna in 1741. In 1847 it set off two islands to form the Town of Perkins, which surrendered its organization in 1918 leaving the unorganized township of Perkins. The two islands are Swan Island and Little Swan Island, now a nature preserve administered by the State of Maine. The 1761 Pownalborough Courthouse was the first built in Maine and the only one built prior to the Revolution. Parson Jacob Bailey used the courthouse as a church. The Pownalborough Courthouse has hosted future U.S. President John Adams, George Washington’s first Supreme Court nominee William Cushing, Robert Treat Paine and David Sewall. It was the setting for a trial noted in midwife Martha Ballard’s diary. In 1891 an act of the Legislature was approved incorporating Bridge Academy for the ‘promotion of education, literature and science’. The Academy was endowed by members of the Bridge family for “A Free High School for the children of Dresden”. It served in that capacity for the youth of Dresden, and other ‘tuition’ students from many areas until 1966. Over 430 students earned their high school diplomas between 1892 and 1966, after which students attended Wiscasset High School. The building now houses the Bridge Academy Public Library. The historic Kennebec Bridge between Dresden and Richmond was replaced with a new, modern bridge in 2015. The Earle R. Kelley Wildlife Management Area is a 500 acre park, 290 acres of which is marshland, maintained by the State Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, 1.5 miles from the intersection of Route 27 and Blinn Hill Road. Dresden Bog, part of the Management Area, is a water-accessible nature preserve.

Visitors come from miles away to Swan Island, just a stone’s throw from downtown Richmond. Four miles of trails and camping are yours to enjoy as you share the island with deer and bald eagles. Downtown Richmond has a lot of small shops that take you back to an earlier time. Whether shopping antiques or looking for a special gift, you can probably find something of interest right in town. But when you get a hankering for more shopping and recreation choices, you can reach the shopping nexus of Augusta about 30 minutes away. Maintaining an environment for business growth is a priority for Richmond. The participatory style of local government is responsive to the needs of local business.

FARMINGDALE & HALLOWELL FARMINGDALE Population 2,804 (207) 582-2225 Farmingdale, a town in Kennebec County, was incorporated on April 3, 1852 from parts of Gardiner, West Gardiner and Hallowell. On the Kennebec River just north of Gardiner, it is a residential community serving the Augusta-Gardiner capital area. During the 19th century and before the availability of mechanical refrigeration, there were several ice houses along the river. Ice was cut from the frozen water and stored in warehouses often insulated with sawdust. When the ice was gone, the river was clogged with logs floating downstream to paper mills further south. The career of one of Farmingdale’s noted citizens, Peter Grant, provides insights into the town’s past. According to Maine’s Historic Places, Grant was a self-made man who, at his death in 1836, left an estate of over $100,000 (equivalent to over $56 million today), including a shipyard in Farmingdale, half-ownership of four good-sized vessels, and large real estate holdings in the area. His social position is indicated by the fact that one of his sons married a daughter of Dr. Benjamin Vaughan, the patriarch of Hallowell.
HALLOWELL Population 2,381 (207) 623-4021 Hallowell, Maine’s smallest city, rests on the banks of the Kennebec River and was settled about 1761. Although once a granite and lumbering community, the Hallowell of today features a delightful and interesting experience. Hallowell enjoys an eclectic blend of artisans, musicians and lifelong residents. Busy Water Street, lined with galleries, antique shops, fine restaurants and service businesses, blends into exquisite historic houses and beyond to beautiful country hiking trails and waterfalls. The small city is classified as a National Historic District. A state-operated boat landing is located on the south end of the City. It is the hub of activities during the summer months as people launch their boats to cruise the beautiful Kennebec all the way to the ocean. It is said of Hallowell that it retains the charm of yesteryear, the flavor of old world simplicity and the warmth of old-fashioned hospitality. Don’t pass up the opportunity to visit this unique little Maine city.

Historically the present town dates back to January 13, 1630, when a grant of fifteen miles on each side of the Kennebec River from the mouth to the present site of Gardiner was made to William Bradford [governor of the Pilgrim Colony] of Plymouth, Massachusetts. The town of Jefferson was included in this area and was part of the plantation of Ballstown, founded in 1770 by John Ball. (p.42) Jefferson has a substantial frontage on Damariscotta Lake, both in its north end and on virtually all its western shore. Damariscotta State Park is at the northeast corner of the lake, in Jefferson.

CLIMATE The weather of the area is in four distinct seasons, but without the severe snowfalls and cold of the northern regions. Since Augusta is at the head of tide in the Kennebec River, it could be considered coastal, but it lacks the heavy fogs of the seashore towns. The summer heat is comfortably tempered, but a few days occur with maximums reaching as high as 90 degrees. Mid-summer afternoon temperatures are in the ideal range from 75 to 80 degrees on an average day, with the nighttime minimum average in the upper 50’s. Uncomfortably hot and humid nights are relatively few. Winters are moderately cold, with a mean temperature of 23 degrees for the three months of December, January and February. Readings of zero or lower are recorded on an average of 13 days per winter.
CLUBS/ORGANIZATIONS Getting together with people who share your interests is an important part of life in the Capital Area. Most national service and social organizations can be found here. For a complete list of clubs and organizations please contact the Chamber.
