Welcome to our region! As you look through this guide I trust you will notice that there is a great deal to enjoy in our area and that the space on the map between Belfast to Bangor, Bangor to Ellsworth and back again, has a lot to offer. One of the best things about Maine is the diversity of its small towns from fishing ports to great spots along our rivers and ponds. There is an entrepreneurial spirit here that I have not encountered any other place I have lived. That spirit creates a huge variety of shops and services that are owned and operated by men and women that live, work and care about right here. When you support our local businesses you are supporting the entire community. Every one of these hard working individuals gives time, talent and money to make this area the best place to Eat, Play, Shop and Stay. Make sure you thank them when you walk through their doors and tell them “the Chamber sent you! The Bucksport Bay Area Chamber of Commerce is organized to promote the prosperity and quality of life in our area so that the citizens and business community will thrive. One of our many objectives, and part of our strategic plan, is connecting business to community. We have found one of the best ways to achieve this goal is to have a diverse, enthusiastic and involved membership. If you are a business owner, we invite you to join the Chamber and get personally involved in working with us toward achieving our goals and ensuring the continued success of your communities. Wishing you prosperity, Leslie Wombacher Executive Director Bucksport Bay Area Chamber of Commerce

FORT KNOX & BRIDGE OBSERVATORY

Located on the west bank of the Penobscot River in Prospect, Maine, in an area known as the Penobscot Narrows, Fort Knox is one of the best-preserved fortifications on the New England seacoast. The Fort has many architectural features present only to itself, as well as a rich history behind its cannon batteries. Maine was repeatedly involved in northeast border disputes with British Canada, and the area between Castine and the rich lumber city of Bangor was invaded and occupied by the British during the American Revolution and the War of 1812. Despite the Webster-Ashburton Treaty of 1842, Fort Knox was established in 1844 to protect the Penobscot River valley against a possible future British naval incursion. The Fort was designed by Chief Engineer Joseph Totten with a number of other engineers serving as superintendents of construction from 1844 - 1869, among them Isaac Ingalls Stevens and Thomas L. Casey. The Fort was named for Major General Henry Knox, America’s first Secretary of War, who was born in Boston but retired to Thomaston, Maine in 1796. The Fort garrisoned its first troops from 1863 to 1866. These troops were mostly volunteers undergoing training before being sent to their 14

Bucksport Bay Area Visitor’s Guide 2013

active posts and included members of the celebrated 20th Maine. Troops were also briefly stationed at the Fort during the Spanish American war in 1898, but never saw military action. Come explore the Fort and discover this treasure of Maine and United States History. Fort Knox is open May 1 - October 31, from 9:00 - sunset. The grounds are open year round for your visiting pleasure. The newly constructed Penobscot Narrows Bridge boasts an observation tower, rising 420’ above sea level, which may only be accessed through the Fort. The observation tower provides a breathtaking view of the Penobscot River Valley, and is the only observatory like it in the Western Hemisphere! A one-minute ride on the fastest elevator in Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont will take you to the top of the tallest public bridge-observatory in the world. The beauty of the Penobscot River and surrounding countryside is immediately apparent as the elevator door slides open. Ascend two more levels up to find 360 degrees views, complete with identification panels showing you how to locate nearby mountains, lakes and towns. MOVING HERE? If you are considering the Bucksport Bay Area as a possible place for relocation, collecting useful local information is essential to making a good decision. When you start looking at small towns as a place to retire or relocate, there are a few things you may want to keep in mind. The appeals of small towns are many. For instance most small towns in Maine are generally quieter, have a good sense of community and community involvement, have less traffic, lower property and sales taxes and the housing costs are much more affordable. It’s beneficial to look for small towns just outside larger metropolitan areas. Located 18 miles from Bangor, Ellsworth, Belfast, Castine and Blue Hill, a Bucksport location touches all of eastern Maine. We are 35 miles to Bar Harbor and 35 miles to Camden, 65 miles to Augusta and 65 miles to Lincoln. Bucksport is “the center of the known universe”. Bucksport is advantageously located within 30 minutes of large, state of the art hospitals, large retailers, chain restaurants, an international airport, state parks, colleges and universities. Close by we have two health clinics, dentists, locally run shops and restaurants, grocery store, drug stores, various services, hiking trails, and many

other significant amenities. Fifteen lakes and ponds in a 20-mile radius surround us. The beauty, recreational opportunities, and small town warmth make Bucksport and surrounding towns desirable for many looking to relocate. Ask any area resident what it’s like to live here and the answer you’ll get might depend on what part of town they reside in, because there are several very distinct residential locales, each one with a unique character appealing to those that live there. People make their homes all over our area, whether it’s along in-town streets, country roads or State Routes, in the hills, valleys, by the shores, or down long dirt roads in the woods. Because of the geographical size of Bucksport, a lot of homes are miles apart, but regardless of the physical distances there may be between the residents of Bucksport, there is still a strong community spirit that can be felt throughout the town. Neighbors helping neighbors and families doing for families are an important part of what makes living in Bucksport so appealing, and it’s why so many are proud to call Bucksport their home. Life really is good here, and you will find lots of people who will agree.

Located at the mouth of the Penobscot River, Bucksport is the perfect intersection of history, nature, industry, and culture. A walk along the town’s million-dollar walkway gives visitors a glorious view of the tidal harbor and of Fort Knox, a fully casemated granite fort (circa 1844). Also visible from the walkway is the Penobscot Narrows Bridge & Observatory, an impressive piece of engineering, and a working paper mill with its own biomass generator. At the east end of the walkway, pedestrians can gaze across the river at the spot on Verona Island where Admiral Robert Peary’s ship Roosevelt was built in 1905 for his landmark expeditions toward the North Pole. Those interested in the rich history of the area can visit the Bucksport Historical Society, located along the riverfront walkway. Bucksport’s Main Street boasts its own independent bookseller, Bookstacks, where visitors can grab a cup of coffee and buy new and used books, browse hundreds of magazines, purchase local and national newspapers, and check their e-mail using the free Wi-Fi. Main Street also features its own independent movie theater, The Alamo, supported by Northeast Historic Film, which is headquartered at the same location. From Mid-May through October, you can visit our thriving Farmers’ Market every Thursday from 2pm to 6pm also located on Main Street. A summer jaunt into Bucksport means visitors can enjoy a favorite local treat, an ice cream from Wahl’s Dairy Port, known to locals as “the ice cream parlor.” For those wanting to wet their whistle or grab a bite to eat, several year-round restaurants cater to those seeking everything from fresh seafood to vegetable chow mein. Options include Chinese cuisine, pub-style dining and a family-friendly harbor-side eatery with outdoor seating. An annual Bay Festival draws tens of thousands of visitors to town each summer for food, fun, and fireworks, with other seasonal celebrations including a Halloween-themed Ghostport festival and winterthemed Frost Fest.

The most prominent landmark in Prospect is Fort Knox, a large 19th-century fort. It is now a major attraction, as is the Penobscot Narrows Bridge and Observatory. Named for Revolutionary War General Henry Knox, construction on the huge fort started in 1844. With its brick arches, underground passages and enormous guns, it was intended to protect Bangor and its important lumber industry from the British. Fort Knox was never completed or needed but construction was finally halted after the Civil War and is now the most popular historic site in Maine. Adjacent to the fort and crossing the river to Bucksport is the beautiful new Penobscot Narrows Bridge, one of only three cable-stayed bridges in the U.S. The Penobscot Bridge site 22
