Brushing, head/ear rubs, body massages are his favorite thing. He would do well as an only dog or with a confident female. Due to his size, not recommended for small children. He will need a strong proac ve and confident leader who u lizes posi ve reinforcement training.

og-lovers appreciate wonderful rescue and happily-ever-a er stories. The dedicated animal shelters, humane socie es, and rescue groups across the state have them in abundance. But not all are quick adop ons - some of the best take longer. In honor of the American Humane Associa on Adopt-a-Dog Month®, here are a few of those. Stevanie Roy, Director of Opera ons at Aug ic example of wai ng un l the best pet parent came forward. They came to KVHS in August of 2018 – they’d been le in a cemetery with their leashes ed together. Laid-back Jack and toyenthusiast Diane were healthy and seemed to have been well-cared for. KVHS staff tried to find their owners to no avail. During their stay at KVHS, 7-yearold Diane proved to be the boss of their applesauce. She kept Jack grounded, decided their adventures, and was loyal to a fault. On the other hand, 10-year-old Jack let her have all his toys, watched for her when she went outdoors, and was happy for her return.

Hot Dog News Loyal Biscuit Co. has been recognized by Pet Product News International as the 2019-2020 award recipients for “Stellar Staff”! Owner, Heidi Neal – “I couldn't agree more with this! I love the family we have created here at the LBC and am so incredibly proud of each and every one of them. We have high expectations of our team - they are more than just clerks running a register. They are expected to know our products, understand dog and cat nutrition, be able to guide our customers with suggestions on the right food, treats, supplements, toys and more for their beloved pets. They need to deal with deliveries and phones and inventory things. They have to work events. They have to clean, and clean,
and clean because a dirty store is just not acceptable. They have to put up with me and my wild, wacky ideas and my passion for bringing healthy and quality products to our communities in Maine. They help raise needed funds for our shelters and rescue organizations. They help decide where our grant money should go. They have to be kind, and helpful, and caring. And they have to do it all with a smile on their face. I am so proud of my team for being recognized as the NUMBER ONE PET SUPPLY STORE STAFF IN THE USA! This a huge accomplishment and I am absolutely beaming with pride for my team.”

Tammy Walsh of Midcoast Humane Named as One of Coast 93.1-Hannaford’s 20 Outstanding Women of 2019 BRUNSWICK, ME - Midcoast Humane is pleased to announce that Tammy Walsh, Community Resource Coordinator, has been named as one of Coast 93.1-Hannaford’s 20 Outstanding Women of 2019. Ms. Walsh is a tireless supporter of homeless animals and is involved with several animal welfare groups beyond her role with Midcoast Humane. She started as a volunteer at Midcoast
Humane to “help these homeless animals feel loved and less stressed” and to “ensure a healthier environment for the animals.” She became an employee eight years ago, and her passion is clear: she states “Midcoast Humane is very important to me because of the care, shelter, medicines and love that we give to homeless animals at a time when they really need it.” She notes that Midcoast Human helps to save and rehome nearly 4,000 pets every year
from local homes, out of state transports from shelters in other areas of the country that still have to euthanize adoptable animals for space, puppy mills, hurricanes and other weather catastrophes, and local court cases of animal neglect or abuse. Ms. Walsh shared that she has personally adopted 15 animals from the shelter and she often fosters pets as well.

From the Publisher Dear Dog News Readers, I really do love fall, but I feel like I blinked and summer was gone. I swear it was only 6 weeks. I hope fall gives us some great weather and more fun outdoor opportuni es. I will say that I did take advantage of many of the warmer days of summer by oa ng in the lake. Pepper got in many swims and will con nue to do so for now. Her ear infec on is all cleared up, and she got to return to the lake once again. If we throw the ball and she leaps in, she doesn’t go under as much as she does when she entertains herself by rolling the ball around un l it falls o the dock and then methodically hops in so that she lands with her mouth right on the ball. I am super excited right now because we have a friend who has some extra fence posts and is going to help us build Pepper a fenced in area in which to play. Now if we don’t have me or energy for a full
adventure elsewhere, we can exercise out back without worrying about her going someplace she shouldn’t. She’ll also be able to go out there to do her business this winter, and I might save myself from falling on the ice. Last year was treacherous! If the turkeys decide to frequent our yard again, I’m thinking this might help with that as well. She can have her dog cousins over, and they could play in there. There is so much to be excited about Pepper’s “park. Now I pray for Mother Nature to be kind to us and give us a great day on the day we have planned for this. If you are looking to add a new member to your pack, this is a great issue with extra dogs. It is Adopt-AShelter Dog Month! Thank you to our sponsors; they help make it possible to include more dogs and be able to donate to two of the rescues that are selected through our drawing this month.

How is it October already? I feel
like I missed summer, which I sort of did because of the death of my father the end of July. Luckily I love autumn! You can walk your dogs on beaches again, be outside without dealing with bugs and excessive heat, and we get to wrap ourselves in cozy layers. I do believe it’s my favorite season actually! This month I put the call out for your dog ques ons, and of course I had more ques ons than I can fit in Furry Words, but here are the first ones who responded. Tiffany N. wrote in about Aimee, who is deceased. “Do you know I’m sorry?” When I read your ques on, I see a dog who is bouncing all around without a care in the world. I honestly don’t think she even knows what emo on you’re feeling because she is so joyful! Have you seen the movie Elf? His innocence and playfulness are pure, just as it was with Aimee. What I do hear is for you to find peace in your heart. She represented all that you had wanted to find in a person, but your heart wasn’t ready for that, but now it is. Let her carry the torch for you and allow light and love to flow freely through you. Nicholas A. wants to know about his dog Hula. “A er being with us for a few years now, does she have anything she s ll wants us to know?” This dog is absolutely hysterical to talk with. I think in pictures, and the image I see is like a student si ng down in class because it’s me for show and tell and the student is so excited he can barely sit s ll. That being said, when Hula first came into your family, it was a bit overwhelming. She wasn’t used to

so many people, but within a month she knew she was always going to be safe and LOVES her life! You are so funny, kind, sweet, and gentle. I think all of your friends know that but when you hear it from your dog, it really means something, right? Stephen S. asked why Noodle wants to go outside so badly. Noodle feels more like a cat to me. He wants to go out, but then come back in. If he’s out, he wants YOU out. There isn’t anything he thinks he’s missing outside, but he just wants to go out just to be sure. This is going to sound a bit nuts, but I feel like you have energy watching your house from the tree line. It’s all good! When I need valida on, I see a hawk. When I am in the midst of change and need to know it’s all good, I see a great blue heron. When I see an owl, I know that my elders are keeping their eyes on me.

Halloween Costumes Q. I am dressing up my
Labradoodle for Halloween. Is there anything I should be aware of when I make his costume? He is very rambunc ous.
A. It is so much fun to dress up
your dog as long as your dog enjoys it too. Many dogs tolerate dress up. There are many places that you can purchase ready-made costumes that are safe and fun, such as pet shops, box stores, and online. If you are making the costume, there are some things to consider.

When you design your creation, be sure you measure your dog correctly. Measure around the lower part of the neck . Next measure from the neck down the back to the top of the tail. Measure his girth around the chest just behind the front legs. Finally measure from the lower neck to
I feel like the owls are just observing and that you’re doing great on your journey. Marie P. had Lady, who is deceased. “Is she happy? I hope she knows how much she was loved. Some mes I feel guilty because she could be a pain in the bu .” She knew she was loved and also knew she drove you crazy at mes, too. She says that you wouldn’t know what to do if every aspect of your life was smooth sailing, and she hopes you find that. Yes, she is happy and at peace! Kristy O. wants to know how they can help Bugsy with his anxiety. Bugsy loves silence. Instead of si ng with the television on, try si ng peacefully for 30 minutes with him. Try to align your breathing with his. He is here to ground you, but you don’t like being grounded! I get it- I’d rather be floa ng on the waves vs. having my feet on the earth. If you fall asleep with the television on, try cu ng back on it. It will help him tremendously! Darlene S. wants to know what Karma loves best about his life. First thing I hear is that moment when he realizes he’s going for a walk, and you grab the leash. I see him trying to help you by grabbing the leash as it dangles loosely by his neck. It’s super exci ng! April P. had Penny, who is on the other side. “Does she forgive me for what I did? I loved her more than I loved myself, and it killed me to put her down. She was my everything.” Penny is beyond grateful that you helped her cross. As I typed this, my chest and throat got so ght. It was hard for her to breathe at the end, and the light was a blessed sight for her. Those are definitely
not my words, but hers. I also hear, “Please forgive yourself. It was the most compassionate act you could ever have done, and I am eternally grateful.” Jessica K. has Belvedere and asked if he knows he is sick? Yes. He looks so guilty when he chats with me. He says that everything is finally going smoothly for you (the image showing me that is a plane that is leveling off a er ascending) and when he leaves, there will be one missing puzzle piece. Then he smiles and asks you, “What are you going to put there instead?” I’m smiling, too. You need joy!!! Do something joyful when he passes away to honor him and how he’s been by your side through thick and thin. Lisa C. wants to know why Luna’s legs tremble? I’m not a veterinarian, but it feels like the nerve coverings in her body are missing some of their protec ve layer. I hear that it’s similar to Mul ple Sclerosis in a human. When I ask can you make it be er, I get a yes, so talk to your vet and see what he or she has to say. Just a reminder that a psychic reading is not a replacement for licensed veterinary care. If I didn’t answer your ques on, or you’d like to learn more about what was relayed, feel free to schedule a reading at www.enlightenedhorizons.com on the Online Booking page. As always, I offer a discounted Rescue Readings for animals that have been rescued. The more you know about them, the more you can help them adjust to being a part of your pack!
the end of the ribs if your dog is a boy or to the back legs if you have a girl. These measurements give you the amount of material to buy for a comfortable fit. You don’t want a costume so loose that the dog gets tangled up in it or too tight so it is uncomfortable and could create sores by rubbing sensitive spots or trouble breathing. To fasten the body of the costume to your dog, the safest fastener is velcro. If you use es, drawstrings, snaps, there is a risk swallowing these parts or ge ng caught up in the es. Elaborate costumes with towering figures, flowers, and other objects are fun, but be aware of the weight of these adornments and how they will affect your dog’s balance and pressure on his back. If there are leggings, be sure Fido won’t get hung up on things in the environment or the leggings being so wide or long he could trip himself or catch a toenail. Decorations made from buttons and bangles can cause a problem
if swallowed, such as an intestinal blockage that could mean surgery. Make sure the costume does not obscure your dog’s vision. This can be scary for the dog and dangerous. If you plan on painting on the costume, make sure the paint is nontoxic. Any paint that is deemed safe for children is safe for your dog. Lastly, make sure your dog wants to be in a costume. You may think it is fun, but it could be extremely stressful for Fido. You can test out the idea of dress up by pu ng a tee shirt on your dog and seeing the reac on. If your dog acts comfortable with the idea, then go ahead with the costume. Remember to leave a hole for the leash. With all the scary ghosts and goblins around, your dog can easily be spooked. Have a fun and safe Halloween.

HAPPY from page 1 The staff joked about them being the “old married couple” and when they thought of ways to garner adop on a en on for the duo, they chose to marry these soulmates this past February in the decorated educa on center at KVHS. Both dogs were stylishly a red and as Diane paraded down the aisle to meet Jack at the altar, his excitement took over and he met her halfway. A er the ceremony, they celebrated with pizza - and the canine couple made off with pepperoni slices. Their honeymoon days at KVHS seemed almost perfect…but while they had each other and the affec on from staff, they lacked a human to call their own. Then the gods smiled on them. A gentleman reached out to KVHS and Old Dogs, New Digs as the nonprofits worked in tandem to find a home for these seniors. Turns out the dogs were an excellent fit. So, a er ten-months at KVHS, these dogs got their “ever-a er” this past June. Their dad reported that he’s spoiling them with homemade meals, treats, and toys (Diane likely has the lion’s share). Tall Tails Beagle Rescue out of Freeport has a story that was 700 days in the making. The handsome Beagle mix named Toby came under the nonprofit’s wing in late 2017. He had past abuse history that made him shy and uncomfortable when mee ng new people. This directly affected how poten al adopters reacted to him. A Tall Tail volunteer named Kathy fell for him immediately. Unfortunately, she had a pack of her own Beagles, so ming for an adop on wasn’t on Toby’s side. Instead, Kathy visited him at Tall Tails each week, sponsoring him by providing medical care, food, and dona ng in his name every month. A er Kathy and her partner lost one of their pack members, they decided to open their hearts to Toby. A er a slow intro to their resident dogs, it was evident they were meant for each other. A Tall Tails rep said, “Toby really hit the jackpot, he couldn’t have found himself in a be er situa on, and we are all over the moon for this happy ending.”
has decided she’s his bes e. “Her a achment to Sox makes my heart want to burst,” said Heather.

In 2017 Heather Leander saw an online ad for Midcoast Humane’s Adop on Day. This New Hampshire resident drove to the Brunswick shelter where staffers said they had the “perfect dog” for her. Turns out it was a 5-year-old Golden, Lab, Pi mix that had been relinquished by his new owner - he felt he was aggressive. “He’s the most mellow dog,” Heather said of the dog that had been with the nonprofit for almost nine months. It was just ge ng him in the right home, and he fits her family to a T, 9-year-old daughter Maia and boyfriend, Army Sgt. Jus n Kenney. Now named Sox, aka Soxxy, he has proven to be her saving grace. The “most amazing dog ever” has been trained as a full-service animal to address her CPTSD (complex posttrauma c stress disorder) and detect her hypoglycemia. And he’s her emo onal support dog, “He has go en me through the darkest couple of years.” As a therapy dog, Sox has shared his gentleness and powers of Zen with au s c children, veterans in area centers, and with the terminally ill at Boston Children's Hospital. He’s also remarkable with the family’s newly rescued Terrier-Pi mix, Khleo (nicknamed “Wiggles” cause her body does just that when excited), who was adopted and returned three mes to Midcoast Humane. She’s found her forever home, especially because Sox

Jennifer Wilson took her 10-yearold son, Brady, to Midcoast Humane to just “pet the puppies.” Secretly, she wanted to adopt one at their March 2019 Puppy Palooza. It was love at first sight when they met an 8-week-old pup who they named Finley. She was tempted to adopt his sis but thought, “My husband will kill me.” They took the Hound mix home, told her husband Michael about the sibling, and he asked, “Why didn’t you get her, too?” She went back for Paisley. “It felt like she’s supposed to be with us,” she laughed and added Paisley’s her yard digger. “She loves digging a hole.” The pre y girl is the alpha, even domina ng their senior Puggle, Baxter. But Paisley has more than boss in her personality – she has a drama c side. “I can totally see her being like an emo onal teen.” Finley appreciates gnawing on their drywall. Jennifer spends a small fortune buying bones to occupy him. He’s hilariously flighty, has not a care in the world, and has been known to fall off the couch when sleeping. Jennifer acknowledged they’re like toddler twins, laughingly she said she was “duped” thinking they’d be small dogs, but the family can’t imagine not having them in their lives. While these Mississippi pups didn’t take long to get adopted once in Maine, they almost didn’t make it at all. The run was in danger of being cancelled because Midcoast’s Sprinter Van was on the fritz. Thanks in large part to the “Adventures of Columbo
Pope Memorial Humane Society of Knox County in Thomaston has a great forever-after story in the making. Event Coordinator Kasey Bielecki says the 18-month-old dark brindle Mastiff mix named Pandora has been with them for over 230 days. Pandora was relinquished by her owner because she had separation anxiety. “She was back in the isolation kennels for a while because she needed to learn that people are good,” said Kasey. She’s made the turn, and they’re hoping to find a match. “She just needs the right person to understand her.” Pandora’s doesn’t show well in a kennel environment, but once she’s on a walk with a volunteer or in the Community Room her personality shines. She’s gentle and kind, knows basic commands, likes car rides, and baths. She’s ok with some dogs but no felines and would do best in a home without children. Give and Take:
Basic Training Tips
The Perpetual Space Dance
I
f you’ve ever been witness to dogs interac ng well with each other, you have undoubtedly been cap vated by their movements, at once seeming haphazard but at the same me inten onal, theatrical and even choreographed. There is give and take; the interac on maintains a steady energy level and both dogs seem totally happy. Each dog bounces and pounces and mouths, miraculously avoiding causing injury to the other. Play can go on for a long me like this. It’s a beau ful thing to watch.
by Diana Logan
GIVING AND TAKING, YIELDING AND APPROACHING. We should all be observant of canine body language so that we can gauge the quality of interac ons, whether it’s between dogs or between dogs and humans. It all comes down to controlling and respec ng personal space. Each of us has our individual personal space bubble, a “force field” of sorts, which we want to preserve. Whether we are human or dog, entry into this bubble is by invita on only. When a dog jumps on you, she is taking your personal space without invita on.
THE IMPORTANCE OF PAUSES In good dog-dog interac ons, there is an equal balance of giving and taking space. This will come in the form of approaching and retrea ng from the
other, taking turns mouthing and play bi ng, tackling, etc. There will be a reciprocity of movement, with each dog offering equal doses of taking and yielding, inten onally weaving them into the conversa on in order to prolong it. You will see a lot of “pauses”: brief moments when one of the players yields a bit of space to the other, a form of selfregula on. A pause may consist of a play bow, a spin away, a step back, a change in ac on or direc on or a reduc on in intensity, etc. Once in a while, a dog will suddenly grab a toy and offer it to the other dog to share. We expect to see pauses every 4-8 seconds in a good play session. Pauses are cri cal elements to mutual interac ons. WHEN THINGS START LEANING TOWARDS THE DARK SIDE: Dogs need to learn to respect the personal space of others, and we need to help cul vate this by managing their interac ons, whether it’s with people or other dogs. The tendency to have respect, or “deference” - the passive acceptance or submission when responding to another dog’s cues - can be gene c, but it’s also something that must be learned and reinforced from an early age and throughout a dog’s life. Unfortunately, there is o en a discord in “conversa ons” between dogs, and we o en miss the signs, let the interac on go on for too long and risk harm to one of the dogs. “Harm” can come in the obvious form
of emo onal or physical distress, but it can also simply be enabling the perpetrator to be inappropriate to the point where she becomes a bully, so ingrained is the behavior. We must not “let dogs be dogs” and sort things out for themselves. “Play” is not “play” if it’s one-sided. Some ques ons to ask as you observe interac ons: • Who ini ated the interac on? • Did the other dog move towards or away from the ini ator? • Is one dog ini a ng most of the space-taking? • Is the taking and yielding of space equally balanced between the dogs? • Are there pauses? If so, how o en and in what form? • Does it look like one of the dogs is trying to get away? All of the above pertains to offleash dogs. When we are talking about leashed dogs or one who is on leash and one who isn’t, the dynamics completely change. The bubble around a leashed dog tends to be much greater. If a leashed dog has not invited another dog into her space, it’s very likely that she will try to defend it, no ma er what the Space Invader’s intent may be. __________ I invite you to watch a few videos on my YouTube channel so you can see pups in ac on. I’ve put them in a playlist called “Interac ons: Give and Take.”

I say whack because even if they really don’t pat very hard, having a hand fly over your head and land on you, is not a nice thing. They have been doing it for three years. That’s how old I am. I’ve tried ducking or even backing away when I see the hand coming. That’s hard for a Golden Retriever to do, because we love being rubbed and pe ed. Just thinking about it makes my tail wag. WHY – Jenny – is it so hard for humans to no ce that we don’t like it? Some mes dogs reach out a paw toward another dog’s head when they are playing. It feels to me like an insult or a challenge, so I charge the pa er and try to knock her over. But you can’t do that with full sized humans, and you’d be er not do it to human puppies because they squeal and their parents growl at you. Pup, I really wish I could think of a quick solu on! Training Your Performance Dog Agility, Obedience, Tracking by Carolyn Fuhrer
Agility – Building a Rela onship
Agility can build a dog’s
confidence. Agility can help a dog learn to focus on a task. Most of all, agility can help build a rela onship between dog and handler. Most people go into agility thinking their dogs will love to run and jump and do the obstacles, or they think agility will help the dogs “blow off steam”, so they will be be er behaved at home. Neither of these ideas is necessarily true.
Agility, besides involving physical skills, does require mental focus. It has been proven that how dogs are introduced to an activity will more than likely have an
extreme impact on how they feel about the activity in the future. We all know that a dog who can perform skills at home may not be able to perform these same skills in a new distracting situation. The same is true for agility. Your dog needs to trust you and be able to ignore distractions in order to focus on the performance of agility obstacles. The type of environment your dog experiences when introduced to agility can greatly influence its performance and its desire to want to engage in agility. The environment should be as stress-free as possible. Dogs should never be pressured into performing obstacles, and they should never feel unsafe in their environment. There should not be dogs outside the ring out of control barking and lunging. This is way too much pressure for most dogs to be able to ignore and try to learn a skill. Classes should be structured so that all dogs can progress at their own level, and students should understand that they should not compare their dog to
others in the class. Dogs should be allowed to progress at a rate that is comfortable for them. Helping your dog learn and supporting its efforts is what will build trust in your relationship. Rewarding of position and timing of rewards are two skills handlers must work hard to learn. This will help the dog understand the behavior that you are looking for. Late rewards and rewards out of position do not help the dog learn and could also cause confusion which may be expressed by “zoomies” or shutdown. Praise with a release to play or praise and rewards will help build confidence and focus. If your dog takes the wrong obstacle, you don’t need to make it feel bad. This can undermine its desire to choose because it is afraid to make mistakes. Instead, just don’t reward incorrect behavior and show your dog what behavior will pay. Being a partner and a helper to your dog will pay off in all your life adventures. Agility can help create and foster this relationship.

Which Companies Are Behind Your Pet’s Food? CAVEAT EMPTOR BUYER BEWARE
A
s a pet food retailer, I am part of an industry that many believe, myself included, has a well-deserved reputa on for being decep ve. Many companies prac ce “legal’ marke ng prac ces that any well-informed consumer would ďŹ nd unse ling. Some of the schemes used in the pet food industry make me hang my head in shame. I try to make up for that by learning everything I can and providing people with factual informa on they need to feed their pets for op mal health. [FMI – h p://bit.ly/GAKS_Nut_Phil] In her book Dog Food Logic: Making Smart Decisions for Your Dog in an Age of Too Many Choices, author and animal nutritionist Linda Case states, “We find that more than 50 % of dog owners do not distinguish between the brand name of a food and the company that produces (owns) that brand. This confusion is not the fault of owners by any means, since it is in the best interest of large companies to keep consumers in the dark regarding exactly how many brands of food they produce and market.â€? Before you even consider speciďŹ c brands of food, it is essen al that you understand the companies behind the pet food industry. I believe that if you want to do the best for your pet, this is informa on you need to know — caveat emptor. Pet food is big business. According to data provided by Pe ood Industry magazine, pet food companies had revenues of over $44 billion in 2018 for North America alone. Six companies, accoun ng for 106 dierent pet food brands, took in over $39 billion or 89.3% of all pet food revenue. It is essen al to understand that all of those dierent brands you see adver sed and on retail shelves
WORDS, WOOFS & MEOWS by Don Hanson ACCBC, BFRAP, CDBC, CPDT-KA
:
may not be as dierent as they would have you believe. Leading the list of mul -na onal conglomerates in the pet food business is Mars Petcare, part of the Mars Candy company. Mars accounted for 41.1% of all the pet food sold in North America across their 41 pet care brands. Those brands include: Cesar, Dreamies, Eukanuba, Greenies, IAMS, Nutro, Pedigree, Royal Canin, Royal Canin Veterinary Diets, Sheba, Tempta ons, Waltham, and Whiskas. Another candy company, NestlÊ Purina PetCare is in the second posi on at 29.9% market share with 30 brands. Pet food and treat brands owned by NestlÊ include: Alpo, Bakers, Beggin’, Beneful, Beyond, Busy, Castor & Pollux, Cat Chow, Chef Michael’s, Deli-Cat, Dog Chow, Fancy Feast, Felix, Friskies, Frosty Paws, Gourmet, Just Right,
Kit & Kaboodle, Mighty Dog, Moist & Meaty, Muse, Purina, Purina ONE, Purina Pro Plan, Pro Plan Veterinary Diets, Second Nature, T-Bonz, Waggin’ Train, and Zukes. At the third posi on on the list is J.M Smuckers, the jam company. They are rela vely new to the pet care industry, having purchased several companies over the past few years. Smuckers controls 6.6% of the pet food market in North America with 14 brands accoun ng for $2.9 billion in sales in 2018. Brands owned by Smucker’s include: 9 Lives, Canine Carry-Outs, Dad’s, Gravy Train, Kibble ‘n Bits, Meaty Bone, Meow Mix, Milk-Bone, Milo’s Kitchen, Natural Balance (Dick Van Pa en), Nature’s Recipe, Pup-Peroni, Rachael Ray Nutrish, and Snausages. Colgate-Palmolive, the toothpaste and dish soap conglomerate, owns Hill’s Pet Nutri on, also known as Science Diet, and is number 4 on the list. They control almost 5.3% of the North American market with four brands, accoun ng for $2.3 billion in sales for 2018. Their brands include; Science Diet, Prescrip on Diet, Ideal Balance, and Healthy Advantage. Number ďŹ ve on the list is Diamond Pet Foods who make their own food but is primarily this high on the list because they are a co-packer and manufacture
food for a wide variety of other companies that do not own their own manufacturing plant. They account for 3.4% of the North American Market with $1.5 billion in sales for 2018. Brands owned by Diamond include Diamond, Diamond Naturals, Diamond Naturals Grain-Free, Diamond Care, Nutra-Gold, Nutra-Gold Grain-Free, Nutra Nuggets Global, Nutra Nuggets US, Premium Edge, Professional, and Taste of the Wild. Brand names made for other companies were not disclosed. Last on our list is General Mills, best known for brands like Cheerios, Pillsbury, and Be y Crocker. General Mills entered the pet food business in 2018 with the purchase of Blue Bualo. That gives them almost 3% of the North American market with $1.3 billion in sales for 2018. Blue Bualo currently has six brands: Life Protec on, Freedom, Basics, Wilderness, Carnivora, and Natural Veterinary Diet. You might think, well I eat food from all of these big companies and feed it to my children. What’s the harm in feeding it to my pet? The dierence is that you probably consume a ny percentage of food made by Mars, NestlÊ, Smuckers, and General Mills, and it is not your primary source of nutri on. In many cases a pet’s en re diet may come from one of these companies.
In 2018, only 6 companies owned 106 dierent brands and accounted for 89.3% ($39 billion) of ALL the pet food sold in North America.

Great with other dogs. Older children and dog savvy cats are fine. We will require another young, large dog for companionship, and a secure fenced yard (minimum 5 feet). He has not been properly treated and is ini ally shy with new people.

If you’re looking for a hiking partner then I’m your guy! I so want a home of my own again. You see, I had a good one, and then my mom had to go live in the hospital and I couldn’t go with her.
I’m such a good boy everyone tells me! But I want outa here! Shelter life ain’t for this good ol’ boy. I want to smell the salt air, listen to the birds sing and go take a nice long walk with my new BEST friend.
Can be shy at ďŹ rst, but once comfortable will be your li le shadow! OK with older, respec ul children, but no cats. Most comfortable around other dogs, so looking for a home with a doggy friend.

70 pounds of pure muscle. Yes, she only has one eye. We’re not sure what happened but it doesn’t slow her down. She would love a house with a lot of land to run and ideally a very high fence and absolutely NO cats!
Enjoys and needs vigorous exercise! Loves most dogs. Riley will need an experienced Catahoula home that understands the breed and can provide the exercise and leadership that is necessary to keep her happy!
Pumpkin wants to be the only dog. She adores people. Smart girl who know how to sit, stay, lay down, no or leave it, walks well on her leash and is house trained.

OUTSTANDING from page 2 When asked by Coast 93.1 if there was a time she saw the benefit of the organization impact someone’s life in a meaningful way, she shared the story of an elderly woman who called the shelter in tears as she was going to have to surrender her cat. The new low income housing she was moving to would not accept her pet because she needed approximately $500 worth of treatments and vaccinations to be considered ‘up to date.’ As the woman’s income was only $740 per month, she was unable to cover the costs. Ms. Walsh found a way to use public assistance donations to cover the costs so the elderly veteran’s widow was able to keep her furry friend.
We are proud to have Tammy Walsh on our team at Midcoast Humane and wish to congratulate her on this honor. About Coast 93.1-Hannford’s 20 Outstanding Women Coast 93.1 and Hannaford Supermarkets partner annually to identify and recognize women who go above and beyond to serve their communities. Listeners nominate candidates, and twenty are chosen to be celebrated as Outstanding Women. The 2019 program marks the third year for “20 Outstanding Women”, which will culminate in an awards ceremony on October 14th, that will be available live starting at 7:30pm on Coast 93.1’s website www.coast931.com.
