Population 18,705 (207) 626-2300 Augusta, one of America’s most beautiful capitals, has been the capital city since 1827, seven years after Maine was admitted to the Union. The Capitol Building is the centerpiece for this special city. Located on both sides of the Kennebec River, Augusta is the center of employment, commerce, and service for Central Maine and is the seat of state and county government. Augusta is a one-hour drive from Portland and less than a three-hour drive from Boston. While the City’s population is only 18,705, the City is the service center to a large area of some 70,000 people and, more recently, has become a retail shopping mecca for a population of some 350,000 Maine residents. Augusta is a city rich in history. From its early days as a Pilgrim trading post, the City has grown as an industrial trade center and has become a center for the region’s health and educational services. Joint public and private efforts have resulted in the development of the Augusta Business Park, Augusta Civic Center Complex, downtown redevelopment, and regional retail shopping centers. A modern Augusta City Hall Complex, including a renovated Old Fort Western (1754) museum complex, graces the banks of the Kennebec. Such efforts have also stimulated redevelopment efforts in Augusta’s historic downtown district along the Kennebec River. Dresden was first settled as Frankfort in 1752 by German and French Huguenot immigrants. A town in Lincoln County, it incorporated on June 25, 1794 from a portion of the town of Pownalborough (later Wiscasset). The Germans, brought to the area through

Farmingdale, a town in Kennebec County, was incorporated on April 3, 1852 from parts of Gardiner, West Gardiner and Hallowell. On the Kennebec River just north of Gardiner, it is a residential community serving the Augusta-Gardiner capital area. During the 19th century and before the availability of mechanical refrigeration, there were several ice houses along the river. Ice was cut from the frozen water and stored in warehouses often insulated with sawdust. When the ice was gone, the river was clogged with logs floating downstream to paper mills further south.

It was first called Kennebec, but finding that their mail often went to Kennebunk, Maine, the townspeople decided in 1854 to change the name to Manchester. The central part of town is known as the Forks, a fitting name, since seven roads meet there. Just minutes from Augusta, many small businesses flourish, surrounded by beauty. Manchester boasts a gorgeous lakeshore on Cobbosseeconte Lake.

Mount Vernon, one of the most beautiful towns in Maine, is situated in the lake region of central Maine at the foothills of the Appalachian Mountain range. A large number of seasonal residents and tourists come to Mount Vernon for its many attractions. Fishing is outstanding in the many lakes and streams. The summer’s climate is especially conducive to swimming, hiking, and boating. Hunting and leaf peeping are popular fall attractions and winter brings snowmobiling, ice fishing and cross country skiing. Mount Vernon’s other attractions include an active community center, an excellent library, a community theater group, various clubs and other civic, fraternal, and social organizations. Mount Vernon is a friendly town that enjoys excellent schools, an active community and a unique blend of farmland, forest, and lakeshores. It is located within easy travel distance of commercial and governmental centers of Augusta, Waterville and Farmington.

Pittston is a town along the eastern shore of the Kennebec River in Kennebec County. The town was named for the family of John Pitt, who were early settlers. The town was incorporated in 1779. The town has a total area of 33.44 square miles, of which, 32.17 square miles is land and 1.27 square miles is water. The historic Major Reuben Colburn House (a state historic site) and the Pittston Congregational Church are located in Pittston.
RANDOLPH Population 1,724 (207) 582-5808
Randolph, about 2 square miles in size, is about 6 miles south of Augusta and about 20 miles north of the coastal town of Wiscasset. A town of just under 2,000 residents, Randolph lies along the bank of the Kennebec River just across from the City of Gardiner. It was incorporated in 1887, and used to be a thriving river community specializing in boats, lumber, ice and a terminal for a narrow gauge railroad to Togus Veterans Home in Chelsea. Being the smallest town in Maine (by area), it has a small town atmosphere with the proximity to all services and schools.

Readfield’s population was 2,598 at the 2010 census. Readfield is home to the Kents Hill School, a preparatory school, Maranacook Community Schools, public schools for the district, a few summer camps, and the annual Readfield Heritage Days. Founded in 1771 from a portion of Winthrop, Readfield boasted an active and vibrant industrial life throughout the 1800’s and early 1900’s. The area once known as factory square was filled with a wollen factory, a sash and blind factory, a boot factory, a grist mill, and a slaughter house. While the industry is gone, the natural beauty of the surroundings remains. The town contains four lakes and ponds, including Maranacook Lake. Due to the numerous bodies of water, Readfield was previously named Pond Town.

Richmond, a small town with a big heart! If you’re looking for a place to visit or call home, consider Richmond, Maine. It is blessed with unparalleled beauty, from the rolling hills that surrounds it to the timeless Kennebec River that defines its downtown. Visitors come from miles away to Swan Island, just a stone’s throw from downtown Richmond. Four miles of trails and camping are yours to enjoy as you share the island with deer and bald eagles. Downtown Richmond has a lot of small shops that take you back to an earlier time. Whether shopping antiques or looking for a special gift, you can probably find something of interest right in town. But when you get a hankering for more shopping and recreation choices, you can reach the shopping nexus of Augusta about 30 minutes away. West Gardiner is a town in Kennebec County, incorporated on August 8, 1850 from a portion of Gardiner. It swapped land with Farmingdale (1852, 1853) and annexed some land from Litchfield (1856) to complete its boundaries. West Gardiner is the site of one of the Maine Turnpike Authority’s service plazas. In addition to the usual fast food providers, the plaza is home to the Center for Maine Craft.

Cultural opportunities within the Capital Area include Shakespearean plays performed at the Theater at Monmouth throughout the summer and concerts performed by the Kennebec Performing Arts and the Augusta Symphony Orchestra plus year-round performances at the Waterville Opera House. The weather of the area is in four distinct seasons, but without the severe snowfalls and cold of the northern regions. Since Augusta is at the head of tide in the Kennebec River, it could be considered coastal, but it lacks the heavy fogs of the seashore towns. The summer heat is comfortably tempered, but a few days occur with maximums reaching as high as 90 degrees. Midsummer afternoon temperatures are in the ideal range from 75 to 80 degrees on an average day, with the nighttime minimum average in the upper 50’s. Uncomfortably hot and humid nights are relatively few. Winters are moderately cold, with a mean temperature of 23 degrees for the three months of December, January and February. Readings of zero or lower are recorded on an average of 13 days per winter.
School systems within the Capital Area are strongly committed to the educational, social and personal development of our children. Our schools are noted for fine academic programs, which have prepared students for the best colleges in the country. To meet the needs of a diverse student population, schools offer special needs and honors programs, as well as alternative programs for students interested in exploring non-traditional environments. RECREATION The Capital Area offers a variety of year round recreational activities for residents and visitors alike. Surrounded by more than 30 lakes, ponds, and the Kennebec River, the Capital Area is well suited for activities such as canoeing/ kayaking, boating, swimming, water skiing, sailing, jet skiing, ice skating and fishing. Boat sales, rentals and marine services are provided by area marinas including Clark Marine in Manchester, Lakeside Motel and Marina in East Winthrop or Great Pond Marina in Belgrade Lakes. Public boat landings located on the Kennebec River can be found in Augusta, Hallowell, Gardiner, and Richmond as well as on larger lakes in the region. White water rafting along the upper Kennebec and other rivers is organized by rafting companies within the area such as North Country Rivers. The Capital Area Recreation Association complex between Hospital Street and the Cony Road (beside the Viles Arboretum) offers venues for soccer, baseball, softball, basketball, horseshoes, and walking / hiking / jogging. The City of Augusta maintains popular Bicentennial Park, a recreation and swimming area on a city pond for Augusta residents. Outdoor swimming pools are located at two area playgrounds and at area hotels/motels including Fairway Motor Lodge, Best Western Plus Civic Center Inn, and Quality Inn & Suites Maine Evergreen Hotel. Indoor swimming pools are located at Senator Inn & Spa, Comfort Inn, Fairfield Inn & Suites by Marriott, Hampton Inn, Homewood Suites by Hilton and Kennebec Valley YMCA. The Kennebec Valley YMCA, with its two facilities (Augusta and Manchester) offers two pools, fitness centers/indoor tracks, group exercise studios, racquetball, open gym, child watch services and a variety of programs that serve all ages, infants to seniors. TRANSPORTATION Interstate 95, the backbone of highway transportation in Maine, serves the Capital area. In addition, many other major highways converge in the Capital helping to make it a true center of commerce and travel. Portland and Bangor are about an hour’s drive away and Boston is less than a three-hour drive. Cape Air provides scheduled flight service to Boston and beyond from the Augusta State Airport. Charter air service and flight instruction courses are available from Maine Instrument Flight. Augusta has a variety of trucking firms, which offer freight service to the area. Greyhound buses serve Augusta; Kennebec Explorer provides local public bus transportation and rental cars are available at Enterprise Rent-A-Car and Hertz. Concord Coach Lines Bus Company operates a major transportation hub in Augusta providing direct transport to Boston and New York City. UTILITIES In 2013, two natural gas companies installed pipelines and began delivering natural gas to industrial, commercial, and residential customers. Summit Natural Gas of Maine is installing a $350 million pipeline infrastructure along the river corridor from Dresden to Madison. Summit Natural Gas of Maine built a major pipeline through the Valley in 2013 and established its headquarters in Augusta. Maine Natural Gas also built a pipeline to Augusta to serve both commercial and residential customers. Health services in this central part of Maine are provided by MaineGeneral Health at its Waterville and Augusta campuses with a teaching unit associated with Dartmouth Medical School.

POINTS OF INTEREST MAINE STATE HOUSE Noted Boston architect Charles Bulfinch designed the original Maine Capitol, built in 1829 using granite quarried from nearby Hallowell. In 1910, another Boston architect, C. Henri Desmond, enlarged the building to double its original size. It is truly one of Maine’s architectural treasures and recently underwent a $50 million renovation. The dome rises 185 feet over the majestic Kennebec River. The Capitol Building houses both Executive and Legislative branches. Tours are available weekdays only, year round and scheduled by calling the Maine State Museum. Please call: (207) 287-2301. BLAINE HOUSE (GOVERNOR’S MANSION) The Blaine House, located on the corner of State and Capitol Streets, was built in the Federalist style in 1833. In 1872, the motif was changed to Victorian & Italian style, and in 1919, noted Maine architect, John Calvin Stevens, remodeled the mansion to a semiColonial structure. A gift to the state from Mrs. Harriet Blaine Beal, the house has been the official residence of Maine governors since 1919. The Blaine House is open for tours by appointment only. Later, Premier Andropov invited Samantha and her family to visit the Soviet Union, experience its culture and meet
