The remains of farm buildings on the Lewiston Road (Route 9/126) recall an earlier time when large farmhouses, barns, and silos dominated the landscape. One of the Maine Turnpike Authority’s service plazas is located in West Gardiner. In addition to the usual fast food providers, the plaza is home to the Center for Maine Craft, which features a retail gallery for handcrafted work by Maine artisans and exhibitions of fine craft sponsored by Maine’s premier craft organizations.
• The town swapped land with Farmingdale (1852, 1853) and annexed some land from Litchfield (1856) to complete its boundaries.

WHITEFIELD
Population: 2,300
FAST FACTS:
Whitefield was settled in 1770 and was incorporated in 1809 from the portion of the Ballstown Plantation that was remaining after the town of Jefferson was incorporated.
• Whitefield was named after George Whitefield, a British evangelist, who visited Maine in 1745.
The town has a strong sense of community fostered through its rich history, its diverse population, recreation, and locally produced crafts, artwork, and foods. Visitors can get a taste of Maine with locally raised meats and organic vegetables sold at Whitefield’s general stores. Whitefield boasts a serene lake, wetlands, rivers, streams and trails accessible to the public for recreation. Take the family on a hike at the Salmon Preserve or Mars Ridge Trail, where visitors can see as far as the Camden Hills. Play nine holes of golf at the local golf course or go for a paddle and fish for small mouth bass in Clary Lake.
• The town was first settled by a substantial number of Irish Catholics who were attracted to the area by the lumbering opportunities and the ability to ship the logs down the Sheepscot River.

• Shortly after the town was incorporated as Malta, a rebellion – the “Malta War” – broke out between residents and the Massachusetts government over land ownership rights.
Windsor is home to the 2nd largest agricultural fair, the Windsor Fair, which takes place each year from the last week of August until Labor Day in September. The fair encompasses over 50 acres and has an estimated attendance of over 150,000. to a semi-Colonial structure. The house was gifted to the People of Maine in 1919 by their daughter, Harriet Blaine Beal, in memory of their grandson, Walker Blaine Beale, who was killed in action in World War I. The Blaine House is open for tours by appointment only. Please call the Maine State Museum at (207) 287-2301. www.blainehouse.org
Located on the corners of Capitol and State Streets in Augusta, the Maine Capitol was originally designed by noted Boston architect Charles Bulfinch, and it was built in 1829 using granite quarried from nearby Hallowell. In 1910, another Boston architect, C. Henri Desmond, enlarged the building to double its original size. It is truly one of Maine’s architectural treasures and recently underwent a $50 million renovation. The dome rises 185 feet over the majestic Kennebec River. The Capitol Building houses both Executive and Legislative branches. The State House is open to the public year-round, Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Guided tours run hourly between 9:00 a.m. and noon. Group tours can be arranged by calling the Maine State Museum at (207) 287-2301.
CAPITOL PARK
Set between the Maine State House and the Kennebec River, Capitol Park was established in 1827. In the 1920s, Frederick Law Olmsted’s firm was commissioned to design Capitol grounds, Capitol Park, the adjoining Driving Park, and neighboring Blaine House grounds. With wide gravel paths between rows of trees, the park is Maine’s earliest documented designed landscape. Capitol Park was named to the National Register of Historic Places in 1989.
BLAINE HOUSE (GOVERNOR’S MANSION)
LAW ENFORCEMENT, EMT & FIRE FIGHTERS MONUMENT PARK
The Blaine House, located on the corner of State and Capitol Streets, is one of Maine’s most notable homes and is the official residence of Maine Governors. The house was built in the Federalist style in 1833 by James Hall, a retired ship’s captain. James G. Blaine purchased the house in 1862 as a gift for his wife, Harriet. In 1872, the motif was changed to Victorian & Italian style, and in 1919, noted Maine architect, John Calvin Stevens, remodeled the mansion
These special memorials, erected near the State House, give constant statewide tribute to law enforcement officials and fire fighters who have given their lives in the line of duty. Their names are engraved in granite on the memorials. 230 State Street, Augusta.

HHRC uses the lessons of the Nazi Holocaust and other genocides to combat prejudice and discrimination. From the inspiration and legacy of Gerda Hass, Holocaust survivor and author, the Holocaust & Human Rights Center of Maine was established in 1984. HHRC opened to public at its permanent home in the Michael Klarh Center on the University of Maine at Augusta campus in May 2008. Additionally, the Michael Klarh Center – named for Michael Klahr, a Holocaust survivor – hosts rotating exhibits as well as artifacts and information from Maine people who survived or helped to liberate the concentration camps of World War II. In the center, researchers will find a rich archive of reference material. Klahr Center seminars and symposiums focus on the topics of diversity, medical ethics, and the Holocaust. 46 University Drive, Augusta | (207) 621-3530 hhrcmaine.org

Additionally, two shorter walks focus on the Canal Street neighborhood and Augusta during the Civil War. Between 10 and 30 panels per week. In 2009, Hallowell opened its tour with a 10-block installation to introduce visitors to its “story of America” which began in the 1620s.
