If you’re choosing to stay to play, plan ahead! Area hotels, inns, and bed and breakfasts are often fully booked in advance of the festivals, Dempsey Challenge, and for Bates graduation and alumni celebrations. If you’re flying to the region, consider a chartered flight to the Auburn Lewiston Airport, or head to Portland Jetport (PWM) and rent a car for your 30-minute drive. Major routes into Maine include I-95 from Boston (2.5 hours) and Route 1 along the coast. Situated within 35 miles of 60% of Maine’s population and close to the coast and mountains, the LA region is a great place to stay to play.

Spotlight On DISC GOLF
Disc golf in Maine is some of the best in the world. The pay to play courses get constant care year-round from course owners. Mainers saw the value of disc golf early on, having one of the first courses in the world. And they ran with it. The manicured woods, flowing water, and the changes in elevation provide players with unique challenges wherever they decide to play. Sabattus Disc Golf boasts three of the top 75 ranked courses in the world, and hosted the 2016 US Women’s Disc Golf Championship. The rest of the state has five of the top 100 courses in the world; you can’t pick a bad spot to play. 38

Arts at Bates The Olin Concert Series offers a vibrant mix of concerts that explore a wide spectrum of world cultures. In July and August, the Bates Dance Festival brings together an international community of choreographers, performers, educators, and students to study, perform, and create new work. Dance, music, theater, and visual arts events are also offered by the Bates Arts Collaborative throughout the year, and the Bates College Museum of Art brings a world of ideas to LA through its exciting exhibitions and events.

Mount Apatite Park This 325-acre wooded park is best known by rock hounds for yielding crystals of tourmaline and quartz. An extensive network of forested trails link abandoned quarries, gleaming slag piles, steep ledges, and giant boulders. Rock hounds have known about this area for over 150 years, when the first discoveries of gem-quality tourmaline were found. Today, amateurs may still search the mine tilling for apatite, tourmaline, and quartz specimens (special rules apply). The park is open year-round from dawn until dusk. Park brochures, which include a trail map, park rules, and other park information, are available at the Auburn Parks & Recreation Department office. Open Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. The park is located on Stevens Mills Road, Auburn. 44

Art Walk LA celebrates the Lewiston Auburn arts scene and community, bringing art, crafts, and live entertainment to more than 20 venues and outdoor spaces in downtown LA on each final Friday in May through September. Poland + Mechanic Falls + Minot
In Western Androscoggin County, 10 miles from LA, you will find the trio of Poland, Mechanic Falls, and Minot. These small towns share a regional school district amid rolling hills and rural farm lands. Mechanic Falls (or McFalls to locals) offers a small downtown village thriving with local business. Poland is home to the world-famous Poland Spring, where the water is fabled to have healing properties. Wales and Sabattus are two towns north of the LA region, both acting as quiet, residential communities for employees in LA and Augusta. Sabattus is home to Willow Pond Farm, the first in Maine to offer CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) shares.
