The first person to settle in Naples was George Peirce, in 1774, at Edes Falls which was part of Otisfield at the time. He built his cabin on Crooked River below the old covered bridge. He arranged to build a sawmill that fall and a grist mill within a year. This area became the industrial center of town and was named Peirce's Falls until Col. Thomas Edes settled there in 1837. Since then it has been known as Edes Falls. The old schoolhouse still stands today, used for community meetings and bean suppers. Part of the old mill can still be seen from the bridge.
The Naples Information Center and Museum share the same building making this a very unique stop. You will find hiking maps, events happening, as well as brochures of towns around the state. A clean public restroom is available and fresh water for your dog is always ready. The Info Center is a drop off point to make a donation to Harvest Hills Animal Shelter in Fryeburg. There will be a "most-needed" list on the donation box, anything donated is greatly appreciated. Feel free to tour the Museum, it will be open the same hours as the Info Center. The Historical Society and volunteers have been working hard to display some of the rich history that makes Naples so picturesque. There are albums full of vintage photographs, a 1936 Dodge fire truck that is the town's first truck, a snow roller, and the only museum in the state to feature a Chinese Idol over six feet tall and said to have been cursed. There is no cost to enter but donations are welcome, all proceeds funds future needs of the Historical Society. We look forward to meeting you and thank you for visiting our special town where you will make memories that last a lifetime. SEAPLANE RIDES Naples Seaplane Adventures on the Causeway in Naples, Maine

www.naplesseaplaneadventures.com As a young boy Matt McFadden was fascinated with airplanes and the idea of flying. He took his first flight at the age of twelve and several years later obtained his private and commercial pilot’s license, aircraft mechanic license and flight instructor certificate. However, he was then intrigued with seaplanes and being a bush pilot in Alaska. He was told that the best seaplane courses were being offered in Maine. He was going to become certified and be off to Alaska, or so he thought. His life was forever changed. He stayed in Maine as he loved teaching seaplane flying and met his wife here. After nine years of instructing at the seaplane base on Brandy Pond in Naples, Maine, the opportunity to own and operate the seaplane scenic flight business on the causeway in Naples became available. It was the next step. Together, he and his wife opened as Naples Seaplane Adventures in May 2014. They currently offer three different lengths of flights that explore the lakes region and foothills of the White Mountains. It is a unique and exciting flying experience for customers; one that they hope is memorable and worth telling others about.

waterways
Long Lake is an eleven mile lake with an average depth of 23 ft and max. depth of 59 ft, between the towns of Naples, Bridgton, and Harrison. Fishing enthusiasts may catch landlocked salmon, small and large mouth bass, and chain pickerel. Brandy Pond is also known as Bay of Naples. It's a connecting body of water between Long Lake and Sebago Lake. With an area of 762 acres, the maximum depth is about 44 feet. Because Brandy Pond serves as a passageway between Sebago Lake and Long Lake, coldwater ďŹ sh species such as landlocked salmon, brook trout, and brown trout can all be found within its waters. Trickey Pond is nearby on Rt 114, a 315 acre body of water with a max. 55' depth and exceptionally clear. The pond produces high quality landlocked salmon, and provides good habitat for adult brook trout, lake trout and splake. A portion of Sebago Lake State Park is in Naples, a very popular destination for its sandy beach, woodland walking trails, picnic areas, playground, restrooms, boat launching and 250 campsites on 1400 acres. The Songo Lock is the last working lock from the 30-plus locks built in the 1830s which linked Long Lake to the Atlantic Ocean near Portland via the Cumberland and Oxford Canal. Songo Lock connects Sebago Lake to Brandy Pond and Long Lake. The Songo Lock was rebuilt in 1911 by the Sebago Lake Improvement Company for water level control. The Lock is in Sebago Lake State Park between Naples and Casco o U.S. Route 302 and is now used primarily during the summer months by boaters wanting to travel between the two bodies of water. Visitors must pay a fee to travel through the lock by boat. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1970 and is maintained by the State of Maine. For more in depth history and maps of the C & O please visit the Naples Museum. 10

Dogs are also able to use this trail but must be kept on leash. Distance: 1.2 miles Out & Back Fees are applicable when park is in operation. Rattlesnake Mountain via Bri-Mar Trail off Route 85 Raymond is a 2.5 mile heavily trafficked out and back trail located near Raymond, Maine that features a lake and is rated as moderate. The trail offers a number of activity options and is accessible year-round. Only about a half mile from the parking lot to the best view. The view over looks Panther Pond and towards Raymond. Could be slippery in the winter as the viewing ledge has a slope to it. There is no view from the summit which is an additional 1/2 mile from the first viewpoint. The trail head says that this is the Bri-Mar Trail, looks like the sheep pasture. You can find the trailhead on the left side of Route 85 if you are heading North out of Raymond. The parking lot is less than 2 miles from the Crescent Lake boat launch. Hacker's Hill A 0.6 mile lightly trafficked loop trail located on Quakeridge Rd in Casco, that offers the chance to see wildlife and is good for all skill levels. The trail offers a number of activity options and is best used from May until October. Dogs are also able to use this trail. Distance: 0.6 miles Elevation Gain: 75 feet. There is a gate to drive to the top of Hacker’s Hill, open Mon, Wed, Fri, Sat & Sun 8:30 a.m.to sunset for the season. Not really a hike but the views are incredible. Jugtown Forest Trail 2.7 miles loop accessible year-round. This area is primarily used by snowmobilers and off-road drivers. Hancock Lumber's 5,000 acre privately owned working forest. In winter, it's not uncommon to see dog sledders whisk along tote roads or a family snowmobiling on trails maintained by the Crooked River and Muddy River SnoSeekers Snowmobile Clubs. The warmer seasons bring a greater diversity of recreational uses, from hunting and hiking to horseback riding, blueberry picking and birding and, of course, canoeing and fishing. ATV traffic is permitted from May 15 through Dec 15 on marked trails only. Five Fields Farm 5.4 mile moderately trafficked loop trail located near Bridgton, offers scenic views and is rated as moderate. The trail is primarily used for cross country skiing and snowshoeing and is best used from November until April. Elevation Gain: 669 feet. camping Naples' campgrounds are some of the best kept secrets in Maine. The privately owned parks are of the highest quality and packed full of activities and events. Located in the center of southern Maine’s Lake Region, Naples has a wealth of opportunities for recreation year-round. Visitors are drawn to the Naples Causeway on Long Lake and Brandy Pond where they find our special attraction, the Songo River Queen II. For those looking for the camping experience, Naples abounds with options of every type. For those looking for the rustic experience, you’ll find small clearings in wooded areas near lakes and streams. Quiet, solitude, and star lit skies will cap off the experience of camping in these remote areas. For some, the camping experience can be found in assorted commercial campgrounds that offer everything from basic tent sites to far more elaborate sites with water and electricity hook-ups for pull behind trailers or recreational vehicles. Some campgrounds offer amenities such as swimming pools, areas for sports and games, convenience stores, firewood for sale and bathing facilities. 20

Here are a few local campgrounds we recommend: Colonial Mast Campground is so named due to the history of the property and area. Located in Mast Cove on Long Lake. During Colonial times, the trees in this area were harvested for ships masts as they grew so tall and straight, hence our name. It is our great location on the lake, our sandy beach and the beauty of these tall trees that folks who are camping with us visit to enjoy. We strive to provide the best in family camping, with our well-maintained grounds, friendly customer service, and kids planned activities. With the addition of our indoor pool in 1997, we offer year round recreational camping. The pool is open to the public, and the pool and hot tub, along with our beautiful lodge are well enjoyed by the community, especially in the winter months, offering open swim time, aquacise classes, birthday parties and swim lessons. See our ad on page 23. Naples KOA Campground is surrounded by outdoor fun that includes fishing, boating, and hiking - all just a short drive away. The campground's location provides abundant day-trip opportunities. An hour east takes you to beautiful ocean beaches, or you can go west to the mountains for breathtaking views. Check out this KOA's website for more suggestions, along with a list of area theme parks for added family fun. The variety of accommodations here will ensure a great stay! You'll find everything from RV rentals to Deluxe Cabins, as well as RV Sites (some with patios and gas grills). All sites include up to 50-amp electric, free Wi-Fi and 70-channel cable TV. The friendly staff will be happy to assist you, so you can take home lasting memories. Pool: Memorial Weekend - Labor Day Weekend. Max pull thru: 85 feet. Your hosts: Pam & Con Crepeau. See our ad on page 3. Four Season's Campground Bob and Judith Van Der Zee started camping with their family at Four Seasons Camping Area in 1971. Ten years later, they purchased the campground. The day to day operations are now run by two of their children, Andrew Van Der Zee and Beth Brown. Much of the campground looks the same as it did 40 years ago, except the trees have grown taller, and the sites are more spacious to accommodate larger trailers. Many families come back year after year and make wonderful memories along the shores of Long Lake. See our ad on page 23. Loon's Haven Family Campground has been enjoyed by families since 1961. The white sandy beaches, clear water, and wooded setting offer a relaxing getaway. You can hear the loons call across the spring-fed pond early each day while you enjoy the fresh morning air and the beauty that surrounds you. Evenings bring more loons calls, and the most stunning sunset shows you have ever seen. As the only campground on crystal clear spring-fed Trickey Pond you can be sure to enjoy swimming, boating, kayaking, and fishing without having to exit the campground. We offer waterfront, 50amp, and full hook up sites, and are very pet friendly. Rental units and onsite store and cafe offerings make it so you do not have to leave during your vacation. See our ad on page 22. The Maine Legislature has banned ALL out-of-state firewood. Out-of-state firewood can bring harmful insects and diseases that can destroy Maine forests.
