CROSSING THE BORDER Maine opens its doors to thousands of Canadian tourists each year, warmly welcoming vacationers who come to enjoy the state’s quiet woods, pristine waterways and bountiful shopping. Border crossings between the U.S. and Canada are generally easy, but with a pet in tow the passage can become a bit more complicated. For example, in order to bring a dog into Maine from Canada, the pet’s owner has to: • Provide proof that the animal has been vaccinated for rabies at least 30 days prior to entering the country (puppies younger than three months and cats are exempt from this regulation). • Dogs 15 months and older who have been previously vaccinated for rabies, but for whom the vaccination has expired, may cross into the US immediately upon receiving a booster vaccination, as long as they received their first rabies vaccination after they were 3 months old. • Animals crossing the border into the U.S. are subject to inspection. If they look unhealthy for any reason, or especially if they appear to be carrying an infectious disease that could be transmitted to humans, they may be detained, quarantined or refused entry. As for going in reverse, from the U.S. into Canada, the rules are similar. Dogs are allowed into Canada if the owner carries a signed rabies certificate or a signed veterinary certificate declaring that the dog is originating from a country recognized by Canada as being rabies-free. (The U.S. is not considered rabies-free.) Dogs under three months are exempt. 10

Travelers may bring pet food and treats for their personal use into Canada, if they meet all of the following requirements: • No more than 20 kg (44 pounds) may be transported. • The pet food or treats must be of US origin, commercially packaged, and unopened. • The pet food or treats must be in the possession of the traveler at the time of entry from the US. • The animal that will eat the imported products must accompany the traveler at the time of entry. • The imported product must be fed only to the animal that accompanied the traveler into Canada. Other Canadian regulations to keep in mind: Service dogs are exempt from documentation requirements as long as their owner accompanies them. (Even service dogs need a rabies certification to enter the U.S.) Pit bulls are not allowed into the province of Ontario, there are no exceptions for tourists. Other Canadian areas, like Montreal and Quebec have “dangerous dog” restrictions The best advice is to check with officials at the specific crossing station you plan to use. There are 24 of these along the 611mile U.S.-Canadian border.

PET-FRIENDLY SOUTHERN MAINE The Yorks are famous for its long sandy beaches, and safe, family-friendly beach-town atmosphere. As each year passes, the area becomes more of a destination for weddings, family reunions, or just a place to get away. Many of the lodging facilities have “pet-friendly” rooms or there are a few businesses in the local area where visitors can board their pets. Many residents and visitors enjoy the pet-friendly beaches with their dogs, even during the summer months. From May - September, dogs are allowed on the beach from sunrise until 8:00am for exercise off leash, but under the owner’s control. From 6:00pm until sunrise, dogs are allowed back on the beach as long as they are leashed.

Nubble Lighthouse is one of the most photographed lighthouses in the world and is a popular spot for residents and visitors alike. It has a small park with benches that make it a peaceful place to rest and reflect. Once a summer-season-only resort area, York has become a year-round vacation destination. The Museums of Old York maintain numerous historic buildings including Jefferds’ Tavern, the John Hancock Wharf, the Old Goal (America’s oldest jail), the Emerson-Wilcox House. This museum is located in the heart of York Village and offers lectures and special events throughout the year. It is open for tours in the summertime.

Lobstering, fishing, boat building and farming were the foundations of the economy until the late 1800’s when the southern Maine coast began to attract summer visitors in large numbers. Neighboring Ogunquit is often considered one of the best beaches in Maine and New England. The 3.5 miles of fine white sand with natural dunes make it a picture perfect spot for your Maine visit. PET-FRIENDLY ROCKLAND-CAMDEN According to Heidi Vanorse of the Loyal Biscuit pet supply stores, this coastal area is a great place for visitors with dogs. “There are lots of places along the coast to run and swim,” she says, “and although it’s not an official dog park, you can always find a playmate for your pooch at Snow Marine Park in the South End (and the great ocean view is a plus).” Just a stone’s throw from Rockland are plenty of dog-friendly places to hike in neighboring communities such as Thomaston, Camden, Hope and Lincolnville. “Many local hotels and even a few restaurants allow dogs,” Vanorse adds, “and Harbor Hounds is a doggie day care where you can leave your pet for the day if you plan on visiting the local museums and attractions.

PET-FRIENDLY BAR HARBOR-ACADIA BAR HARBOR Bar Harbor is the best-known and largest town in the northeast section of Mount Desert Island and leads to one of the entrances to Acadia National Park. Four million visitors are inspired by a visit to Acadia National Park in Maine every year. The Park is comprised of 49,000+ acres of rock-bound coast on Mount Desert Island, a portion of the Schoodic Peninsula on the mainland, and offshore islands. There are 100 miles of hiking trails and 45 miles of carriage roads in the park where pets are permitted with certain restrictions and guidelines. ACADIA Acadia National Park scores high marks for dog friendliness. Dogs are allowed on most of the 120 miles of hiking trails and 45 miles of carriage trails, as long as they are on a leash not more than six-feet long. Dogs are not allowed on sand beaches, in public buildings or on park ranger tours. Specific trails where dogs are not allowed for safety reasons include the Ladder Trail, the Precipice, Beehive, South Bubble Ridge, Jordan Cliffs and Beech Cliffs Ladder Trail. One exception to Acadia’s leash rule is a privately owned section of the park near Seal Harbor, called Little Long Pond, where dogs can run and play off-leash, as well as swim in the pond. Expect the foliage season to peak from late September to mid-October. Thousands of acres of woodland provide you with rolling hills filled with breathtaking colors and beauty. With the snows and dropping temperatures come Nordic and alpine skiing, snowmobiling, snowshoeing and ice fishing. If you snowmobile, you’ll appreciate the more than 150 miles of groomed snowmobile trails. These trails are part of the local Interstate Trail System that connects with the New Hampshire and Canadian systems. Or visit Rangeley State Park with its 690 acres of woodland and lakes for all year outdoor fun (see the state park rules on page 50). It simply depends on one thing, you and what you are looking to get out of your Maine camping experience. Bring along your pet and enjoy your Maine camping vacation with your entire family! Pets are often an important part of camping families. Many campgrounds in Maine allow pets. Some campgrounds just allow small dogs, while other campgrounds allow dogs of all sizes as well as other pets. Management has to be sensitive to non-pet owners’ comfort levels when formulating their rules for their properties. Please call ahead to be sure the campground you choose has a pet policy that works for you. You are better off know-

ing in advance than arriving and finding your pet is unwelcome or will incur extra charges of which you weren’t previously aware. Here are some examples of rules you might expect: 1. Say yes to the leash! Keep pets on a short leash at all times. 2. Make sure your pet has some type of identification on him in case he should stray away from camp. 3. Carry proof of vaccinations. 4. If you leave, take your pet with you. 5. Pick up after your pet and properly dispose of all pet waste in trash receptacles. 6. You are responsible for your pet’s behavior. 7. For health and safety reasons pets are not allowed in pool and playground areas.

If you’ve come to Maine with your pet, but you want to take a day trip or a hike somewhere that doesn’t allow them to come along, what do you do? Especially if your outing will keep you away overnight, you may need to find a boarding kennel, daycare or pet sitter. According to one expert, kennel designer Kay Key, suggests you ask the following questions. Does the kennel smell? • Is the kennel constantly noisy? • If the kennel accepts dogs that are not neutered or spayed, are they kept separate? • Can you see where your dog will be staying? • Is the kennel in good repair? • Are there newspapers, paper shavings or gravel on the floor? • Is there bedding in both the sleeping area and the run? • Is proof of vaccination required? 36

• Is the kennel heated and/or air conditioned? According to the ASPCA, here are a few things to avoid ... Overcrowding | Limited access (pet guardians should be allowed to visit their pet at any time) | Unwillingness to meet your pet’s needs | Poor customer service | Pets left unattended. If boarding, don’t forget to label what you leave with indelible ink, including bedding (nothing that can be shredded), toys, food if your dog has a special diet, medications, proof of vaccinations, and contact information, including how to reach your veterinarian in case of emergency. Sometimes though, kennels and daycares may not be the right fit (if your pet isn’t spayed or neutered; or if they don’t like being around other animals, etc.). In those cases individual pet sitters are a wonderful option. Some lodging places in Maine will offer a list of preferred kennels, daycares and pet sitters in their area so be sure to ask for recommendations when booking your stay.

COMFORTABLE CABIN RETREATS Maine is often considered one of the most dog friendly states in America. Over 100 locations offer cabin retreats for your four legged friends. Locations include such notable seaside areas as Bar Harbor, Rockport, Camden, Boothbay Harbor, Portland, Old Orchard Beach and Ogunquit. Inland locations near mountains and lakes include Greenville, Bethel, Belgrade, and Carrabassett Valley. There’s even a pet-friendly cabin retreat on the famous Monhegan Island.

Willard loves dogs so much that he has started hosting foster dogs on his property from local shelters in hopes of finding them a permanent home. Here are a few suggestions for creating comfortable retreats with your pets:

Cabin rentals usually require advanced reservations to accommodate pets and most have an additional fee added to the overnight stay. Some have weight restrictions and other guidelines. It is best to check in advance so that there are no surprises on arrival. Some of the coastal cabin retreats, especially near Bar Harbor, even offer ferry boat tours and windjammer boat excursions that allow your dog to go on the adventure. John Willard, owner of The Birches Resort in Rockwood for over 40 years, has always been committed to dog friendly lodging. “We never have any problems, though we ask that owners have dogs under leash and voice control at all times,” he said. “We have lots of shore frontage and over 40 miles of trails in 11,000 acres for our guests to explore.”

• Always bring a doggie bag with you on your excursion. The bag should include food, treats, and a retractable water dish. Include any special toys that your dog likes to play with. • Most retreat locations require dogs be on a set leash, not a retractable one. Standard leashes are six feet in length though some facilities, lodging, and parks require four feet lengths. • Be sure to take along any medications that your dog might be taking. If you are going to be in a location for an extended period, it might be wise to find a list of local veterinarians. • It almost goes without saying, but travelers should take care of disposing of their dog waste in appropriate bags or at waste stations. • For a positive experience, follow all guidelines and regulations at lodging establishments and public places.

TICK PREVENTION

Maine boasts some beautiful trails and scenery and hiking is a great activity to enjoy with your dog. No matter how you choose to spend your time outdoors please be aware that one of Maineâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s least pleasant residents is the tick! Ticks carry many diseases including but not limited to Lyme disease. One of the newest tick-borne diseases to gain publicity is the Powassan virus (POW). POW is carried by deer ticks and unlike Lyme disease, which can take 24-48 hours to transmit; Powassan can be transmitted in under an hour. Powassan tends to be transmitted more in early spring and fall and Lyme disease is more common in the summer months. Powassan is a serious disease that can cause long-term neurological problems. This does not mean that you have to spend your time inside, just be aware of the most common places ticks can be found and how to take precautions to reduce your chances of a tick bite. Ticks typically hang out on long grasses, bushes and brush. You can reduce your risk of being infected by ticks by wearing insect repelling clothing treated with Permethrin. Light colored clothing will also help you spot the ticks easier. Ticks work their way from the bottom up. They do not fly or jump. Wearing long pants tucked into

your socks, long sleeves and a hat can prove to be helpful. There are also non-chemical, homeopathic remedies to explore such as the use of many different essential oils, Rose Geranium being one of the most effective. Ticks like to attach behind ears, in hair, body folds, groin and underarms. When you get home be sure and remove your clothing and tumble dry them on dry heat for at least 10 minutes (if damp additional time is needed), hop into the shower and do a full body check. Speak with your veterinarian about preventative treatments available for your dog. Options vary from topical treatments and chewables to natural sprays and homeopathic remedies. If you find an attached tick remove it immediately with fine tipped tweezers or a tick spoon/key. Be careful not to puncture the tick and do not twist it as you may leave in the mouthparts leaving infectious fluids behind. It is not recommended to remove unattached ticks with bare hands as you could be infected through mucus membranes or cracks in your skin. Your risk of infection will depend on what type of tick bit you and how long it was attached. If you do become ill or develop a rash after a tick bite seek medical assistance.

DOGS AT THE BEACH

Maine vacations usually involve some time at the beach. If your beach day includes Fido, here are ten things you need to know to keep your dog safe at the beach. 1. Not all dogs can swim. That’s right, the doggie paddle does not come naturally to every dog. In fact, certain breeds like Corgis and Pugs don’t swim at all. Find some quiet water and give your dog a chance to show you if he can swim or not by encouraging him to follow you. Never throw your dog in the water and expect him to swim. 2. Drinking salt water is a bad idea. This is logical, and yet Buster continues to try to lap up the ocean. The more I want him to stop – the more he wants to drink. In the event you have more luck with your dog, pack plenty of water to keep you both hydrated.

3. Invest in a life vest. Waves, current, and rip tides can quickly exhaust your dog, and that can be deadly. Life vests made specially for dogs come in all sizes. When you’re making your selection, look for one that fastens at three points and has a handle on the back, making it easy for you to lift your dog out of the water. 4. Use sun screen. You’re not the only one that needs to be concerned with sun burn. Get a sun screen specially formulated for dogs and apply it to your dog’s nose and ears 30 minutes before hitting the beach. 5. Beware of submerged dangers. Sharp rocks, shells, coral, and jellyfish can injure your dog. And, because dogs often don’t indicate when they’re in pain, you’ll need to watch his body language and carefully check him for cuts and scrapes.

6. Calm water is best. Surf boards, jet skis, and big waves can frighten your dog. Find a quiet place to play with your pup, or locate a local dog beach were surfing and boating are not allowed. 7. Head for cover. The sun and the sand are fun, but it’s nice to have a place to take a break in the shade and out of the wind. Consider bringing an inexpensive tent to give you and your dog a comfortable place to relax.

10. Rinse thoroughly. When you’re done playing, take time to rinse salt, sand, and microscopic organisms from your dog’s coat. Also, be sure to dry your dog’s ears as moisture in the ear canal can cause ear infections.

8. Don’t overdo it. Running on sand is strenuous, so don’t expect your dog to be able to fetch as long as he might at the dog park. And, start slow, giving him time to warm up to avoid a muscle pull. 9. Cold water can hurt. Remember, if your dog has arthritis or other joint issues, swimming in cold water can irritate the condition. Stick to shallow water and bays where the water is warmer.

MAINE COON CAT

The Pine Tree State is one of only three states in the U.S. with a cat as one of its official state animals. Yet ask any Mainer and they’ll tell you that neither Massachusetts’ tabby nor Maryland’s calico felines can hold a candle to the Maine Coon cat. Beloved for its appearance, size and temperament, the Maine Coon is popular not just in its native locale, but across the country. Google the name and you’ll find links for sites with addresses everywhere from Texas to California to Tennessee. “People ask for Maine Coon cats and kittens all the time,” according to Laura Edgar, a volunteer for HART, an all-volunteer animal rescue organization based in Cumberland. “They’re awfully pretty,” she says. “They go out very fast.”

Kerry Ellen, a Maine Coon breeder with Sebago Mist Coons, agrees. “They have a wonderful temperament,” she says. “And they can be the same size as a small dog.” Buyers, she notes, like the size aspect; males can weigh in at 20 pounds or more while females typically top out at 10-12 pounds. Aside from size and temperament, the typical “look” of a Maine Coon includes fluffy tufts in the toes and ears; long body fur, especially on the hind quarters or “britches”; a neck “ruff” of fur that some say resembles an Elizabethan collar; a nose that looks more like a muzzle; eyes that are green, gold or copper; and a lustrous tail that is both “plumy” and “shaggy”. book by Marilis Hornidge. “The Maine Coon’s tail is his pride and joy,” she writes. “The tail is a banner and is carried as such.” As for color, the Maine Coon comes in a wide variety of hues including tabby, orange, orange and white, tortoise, red-silver, black and white. “The colors they don’t come in are lavender, chocolate and seal,” says Kerry. As for the legends that surround the Maine Coon, there are many, beginning with myths about the name. Hornidge, among others, scoffs at the notion that they came by their moniker as the result of a cross species liaison between a cat and a raccoon. (“A physical impossibility,” she notes.) Other stories suggest that the Maine Coon is a hybrid born of a bobcat breeding with a

domestic cat. The theory that carries the most credence is that the name was taken from a sea captain named Coon brought long-haired cats to North American in the 1700s. Although the Maine Coon would probably take umbrage at the thought, some fans of the popular feline refer to them as “the dogs of the cat world,” given their propensity for friendliness toward humans. “Maine Coons seek out and enjoy the company of people,” according to the website of Maine Coon Adoptions. “They are big, gentle, good-natured goofs.”

Maine is a great place for a wedding, especially in the summer months. Imagine the wedding memories that can be created with your vows exchanged on lawn and garden backgrounds, outdoor terraces, elaborate balconies, or seaside ceremonies near a picturesque beach. Since weddings should be celebrated with friends and family, consider including your pets in the ceremony. There are many ways to have them directly involved or at least there in spirit. Consider the following suggestions adapted by the National Association of Professional Pet Sitters. Should you include your dog in the ceremony? Dressing up your pet? Do it safely. Planning on dressing your pooch in a tux? Make sure it fits properly and doesn’t create any discomfort for your pet. Keep the accessories simple—a bowtie or flower attached to the collar is a fun way to deck out your pet. Ensure that any accessories won’t come loose and pose a choking hazard. ETIQUETTE Most of Maine’s dog-friendly beaches are peaceful places. So too are Maine’s dog parks. This is mostly due to the fact that park and beach pet etiquette is well known, well publicized, usually well posted and encouraged by all throughout the state. If you are visiting Vacationland, however, are a first-time pet park/beach stroller, or simply missed the memo about how to navigate through public pet spaces with your animal, the following tips might prove useful. The two most important things to remember are that these places are shared properties— and the goal when visiting is to have fun! Both require that you pay attention to your companion at all times, and that you get along with other pets and their owners. • According to Maine statute, anyone who uses a dog park does so at his or her own risk. (This is true for any recreational area in Maine open to the public.) • Also according to Maine law, any damage or injury caused by a pet is the responsibility of the owner. • Disposing of your dog’s waste swiftly is a must! Some parks have disposable bags available; others do not. Always bring your own, just in case. • Dogs must be supervised at all times, even when they are off-leash. • When off-leash, dogs must still be under voice control. • If your dog becomes aggressive or hyperactive or in some other way disruptive, it’s your responsibility to remove him or her from the park.

• Dogs must be leashed while entering or exiting the park. • Most parks require that dogs carry proper identification, license and rabies tags. • Female dogs in heat are typically prohibited from parks. Although tough to prohibit, “mounting” by dogs should be broken up immediately when it occurs. • Some parks have sources of water for pets. Bring a bottle for your dog to be on the safe side. Better yet, bring water to share. These same guidelines apply to Maine’s pet-friendly beaches. What’s most important at these sites is to observe regulations regarding when during the day and during the year dogs are allowed off-leash.
