Getting Married In Maine

If you want a spectacularly beautiful site for your wedding, consider Maine. Well known for its naturally beautiful venues, each year the Pine Tree State attracts couples who tie the knot on its mountaintops, at its beaches, under its forest canopies, along its rivers.

We make it easy, from the license application process to the professionals who can handle everything. There are first-class event planners in every region, along with caterers, bakers, photographers, florists, videographers, calligraphers, jewelers, musicians, beauticians, and limousine drivers. Officials authorized by law to perform marriages in Maine include ordained ministers; any person licensed to preach by an association of ministers, a religious seminary or an ecclesiastical body; judges or justices (residents of Maine only); lawyers admitted to the Maine Bar (residents of Maine only); and Maine notaries. Same-sex marriage is now legal in Maine, and lesbians and gays are welcome to plan their nuptials here, too. The state requires no blood tests and no waiting period. Straight or gay, couples can apply for a marriage license at any town office or city hall. If both parties are residents of Maine, both should apply at the town office or city hall where at least one is a resident. If one member of the couple is from out of state, both should apply in the town where one is a resident.

2

If neither member is a Maine resident, the couple may apply at any Maine town office or city hall, and it does not need to be the same location as the wedding.

Past the paperwork is the fun of picking how and where to exchange vows. Couples who want a formal setting might opt for one of the state’s historic churches or elegant coastal resorts. The more adventuresome might prefer a setting next to a lighthouse or on a windjammer. As the Maine Office of Tourism states on its website, “Almost anything is possible in every season and region of Maine.” “It’s very easy to get married in Maine,” agrees wedding planner Diane York of Diane York Weddings & Events, Inc. in Portland. “Guests are always willing to travel here because the state has a lot of meaning to most people. There is always a connection, and when you tell them your wedding is going to be in Maine they will often say, ‘Oh, I’ve always wanted to go there.’”

Say “I Do” With Flair in Maine by howstuffworks.com a Discovery Company

An unconventional ceremony location -- selected for a personal reason by the bride and groom -- lends a modern and creative touch to the day. If any of the suggestions sound interesting, you both can usually find resources through your city's tourist bureau or chamber of commerce, the Yellow Pages, or local wedding coordinators. • Private clubs or hotels: If you select a private establishment, you may need to be a member or have a member's sponsorship. • Private homes or gardens: Look for dramatic features, such as a grand staircase or an elaborate garden. If the garden is what attracts you, ask the home-owner when the flowers are peaking and schedule your wedding accordingly.

• Cruise or charter boats. • Mountains, parks, or beaches: There may even be an on-site city-owned facility that has rooms to rent for weddings. Try calling the local parks and recreation department. • Wineries or orchards. • Historical or public sites. • Art galleries or museums. • Resorts or bed-and-breakfast inns: These are especially well suited for weekend weddings.

stress-busters for the ceremony by howstuffworks.com a Discovery Company

It's a fact that the bride and groom will probably be nervous on their wedding day. Here are ways to relieve the stress:

EAT before the ceremony

PAY any outstanding balances before the ceremony

PREPARE an emergency kit

Allow extra TIME for activities. Everything tends to take longer than expected. 6

Whenever possible, DELEGATE.

RECEPTION AND CATERING BY HOWSTUFFWORKS.COM A DISCOVERY COMPANY

Like the ceremony, the reception and catering should reflect the bride and groom's overall wedding style. And just as with the ceremony, pretty much anything goes. Your reception can be an elaborately planned formal sit-down dinner, a relaxed yet elegant semiformal buffet luncheon, a glamorous cocktail party, or a casual outdoor brunch. No matter which style you both choose, you can click on the links for worksheets to help you plan the reception and catering. Traditionally, a reception includes the following broad categories: a receiving line (which you may choose to include as part of the ceremony), a toast to the couple, a meal, cake, and music. The only must for a wedding reception, however, is lots of celebrating. In other words, do whatever you both like to make this a truly romantic, memorable, and -- above all -- lovely day. While reception sites run the gamut from a formal restaurant to a backyard, you both want to make absolutely certain that your site can comfortably hold the number of guests you wish to invite. It also must accommodate guests' parking needs and any activities you want, such as dancing. Before choosing a reception site, you both must define the mood of your reception. Even though anything goes, you still have to define what "anything" means to you both. To begin, consider your other wedding decisions, such as the style of your dress, invitations, and ceremony. Will these be very formal and traditional? It might seem odd to go from a formal, traditional ceremony to a unique, creative reception ... but again, it's up to you both.

Once you set the mood, select three or four reception site possibilities that can accommodate your concept. After choosing the reception site that meets your needs, keep a detailed checklist of everything the site has and, more important, doesn't have, so you can be sure to rent what you need. Also provide the site with a schedule so the people in charge on your Big Day know what you expect. Be sure to map out a seating plan -- with help from your fiance -- and give a copy to the manager at the reception site and a copy to your caterer.

THE FOOD

There are basically three options for the reception food: self-catered, catered, or included with the total reception package. With the last option, you'll generally work with the food manager from a hotel, restaurant, or country club. Within these three categories, you can aim for a formal, semiformal, or casual menu.

A CATERER

Some hotels and especially private establishments such as museums or historical buildings do not offer food preparation services. In these cases, you need to hire a caterer. Make sure you choose a caterer you can trust who is experienced in weddings. Then let this person be your guide. Your caterer is an expert, and considering the fact that you're paying for his or her services, you might as well sit back and enjoy the help. Also, you both should insist on a tasting session before choosing a caterer. Give very careful second thoughts to anyone unwilling to provide this service. Once you both have settled on a caterer, keep a worksheet on all of his or her contact information as well as details about the menu, including costs. 7

Ogunquit A “Beautiful Place by the Sea” in all seasons, and the perfect place for your special day. Located along scenic Route 1 at the tip of Southern Maine, the little town of Ogunquit is easy to get to, and hard to leave. Ranked as one of the “Top 10 American Beaches” by Ladies’ Home Journal in 2010, the “Best Beach in New England” by NECN in the same year, and “#1 Beach in New England” by Boston Magazine in 2007, and Best Beach Town in New England by Yankee Magazine in 2012. Ogunquit offers some of the most idyllic beach and beachfront wedding opportunities in the country, and certainly in New England. Many couples share their vows right alongside the rolling waves, while others prefer to take in the grand view from a distance.

Other popular areas of Ogunquit include Perkins Cove and the Marginal Way. Originally a fishing village, Perkins Cove offers a quaint seaside experience. From the manually-operated drawbridge to the many working fishing and lobstering boats that fill this small harbor, Perkins Cove is a true picture of New England and offers a relaxed backdrop for your rehearsal dinner or reception.

B Ca The Marginal Way is the town’s famous one-and-a-quarter-mile scenic walk along Co

the rocks and cliffs of Ogunquit’s oceanfront, and is one of the most popular places to get married. Dotted with shaded benches and complete with panoramic views Mai of the sea, it’s clear why so many people gravitate to this special place. Perfect for smaller weddings and elopements, the Marginal Way offers secluded spots overlooking the waves, and the magic of the fresh ocean air reaches into your soul. Even more magical is the transformation Ogunquit makes as the seasons change, offering a variety of opportunities to fill any bride’s request. The dappled leaves, frosted windows, and crisp evenings in Southern Maine offer incredible backdrops throughout the fall and winter months. While the town itself covers only four square miles, Ogunquit is home to exquisite cuisine, warm and inviting accommodations and a myriad of activities. Whether your preference is munching on lobster rolls and chowder and taking in the beach roses from your balcony, or dining at one of our top-rated restaurants and enjoying the greener side of Route 1, Ogunquit can accommodate.

Treat your wedding party to a sunset cruise, soak in the rays on our magnificent beach, enjoy a show at one of the country’s greatest summer theaters, or just sip on a glass of champagne and relax. Ogunquit is your four-season destination for any event, and we’re happy that many brides choose this “Beautiful Place by the Sea.” For more information on celebrating your wedding in Ogunquit, contact the Ogunquit Chamber of Commerce at 207-646-2939 or visit www.ogunquit.org. We also host our Annual Celebrations by the Sea Wedding Expo in November, where we feature a variety of local vendors and professionals that can help you plan your special day. Details and a list of participants will be updated throughout the year at www.visitogunquit.org. We hope to see you there! Photo by Rick Barber - Moon Over Maine

stress-busters for the reception by howstuffworks.com a Discovery Company

Here are a few ideas to avoid last-minute problems and decrease stress: Talk to professional and amateur "experts." Get referrals and recommendations from people in the wedding business and newlyweds. Visit the site before you make any decisions. Never assume a total price includes everything. Many sites charge extra for things such as linens. You don't want to rack up any unexpected fees; equally important, you don't want to find out last minute that you are missing essential items. Ask vendors about backup plans. Problems do come up, people get sick, and cars break down. If your photographer can't make it, does he have someone to fill in? Ask for everything in writing. You want to be sure to have a written contract that clearly spells out everything that you and the vendor agreed upon.

10 Secrets to a Fun Wedding Reception by theknot.com

Jazz Up Your First Dance All eyes will be on you during your first dance, which means it's the perfect opportunity to shock your guests. Imagine starting with a slow dance to “At Last” and then suddenly switching to a fast, sexy Latin dance or a jazzy swing step. It'll totally throw your guests for a loop and set the tone for a lively dance party.

Have a Game Plan for Kids To keep the little ones entertained throughout the night (and to give their parents an opportunity to hit the dance floor!), set up an area specifically for them. In a separate room, arrange for a babysitter who can set up movies for them to watch. Or designate a

24

couple tables just for the kids and pack them with coloring books, crayons, and small toys.

Keep the Toasts Short (And Prep Your Toasters) As meaningful and wonderful as toasts can be, it's important that you don't let those toasting to drone on and on. Quite frankly, it'll put a lull in the evening. When it comes to toasts, it's really all about quality over quantity. So direct anyone who is speaking in advance to keep their speeches to two minutes max and ask them to share any other long-drawn-out stories at a prewedding party like the rehearsal dinner. Continued on page 37

10 Secrets to a Fun Wedding Reception From theknot.com Continued from page 24

Give Out Party Favors Don't forget that a reception is a party! Let your guests know that it's okay to cut loose after a formal ceremony by passing out crazy wedding favors at the reception. A few of our favorite ideas? Funky masks, noisemakers, or Silly String. We even know one couple who handed out neckties and encouraged their guests to tie them around their heads on the dance floor. Quirky, but definitely fun!

Put on a Welcome Dinner Okay, so this tip isn't for your reception, but it will end up making the party more fun. Why? A casual event where all of your guests can meet and mingle the day before the wedding means that by the time your reception rolls around, everyone will have already gotten to know one another. That way, your guests can skip the pleasantries and get right down to celebrating.

Plan an Interactive Food Station Great food makes great celebrations, but customizable food (so that everyone gets exactly what they like) is even better. A risotto station, pasta bar or grilled cheese station where people can choose their own toppings and sauces will leave you with happy, well-fed guests ready to have a good time.

Keep Your Guests Fueled If you want to ensure an all-night crowd, arrange for your catering staff to bring out trays of late-night munchies like French fries

If you stick with low-key, comfort foods like those, they'll wish the party would never end. Another great idea: Offer a coffee bar complete with special syrups and toppings to keep them caffeinated.

Tell Your Guests About an End-of-the-Night Treat Nothing stops a party in its tracks faster than guests heading for the door early. Take out an insurance policy against a skimpy crowd and plan a treat for the end of the night that people will look forward to: You and your new spouse can perform a song with the band for the last dance, or you can plan a reception getaway that'll gets guests excited, like a fireworks show or an exit with sparklers.

Plan a Surprise Sometimes the best parts of a reception are the things guests don't see coming. Surprise your guests with unexpected entertainment during the cocktail hour or reception, like a belly dancer, a mariachi band, or even a salsa dancer.

Arrange Seating Assignments Thoughtfully It sounds obvious, but it belongs on the list: Seat guests with people they'll know and get along with. A well-thought-out seating chart leads to great conversation, which leads to a great dance party, which leads to…well, you get the idea! So seat your high school track teammates near your college running buddies, and put your tween cousins with other kids their age rather than their parents.
