ECO Representatives On Monday 30 July, Rustenburg was happy to announce the new and important positions of environmental leadership, the Eco Representatives. Each elected representative will act as their form class’s eco “conscience” – to motivate, co-ordinate, support and promote a more environmentally friendly, sustainable and eco aware school and classroom environment. We would like to congratulate the following girls and thank them for their willingness to stand for this position. We look forward to awarding them with their badges and to the innovative work that they will do. A1 A2 A3 A4 A5

VISIT BY EXCHANGE STUDENTS From the start of the term Rustenburg had the pleasure of hosting two Exchanges students from Germany. Julia Machhein, from Solingen (near Düsseldorf) came with the German FSA-Youth Exchange to be hosted by Alexa Bessinger, who had gone on Exchange to Germany in December 2011. She arrived already on 7 July and joined Alexa at her home in Lüderitz, Namibia, before coming to Rustenburg on 24 July to live as a boarder in Erinville for her ten days with us. Jana-Maria Wintersohl from Olpe (near Cologne) is a Rotary Exchange student and was hosted by Ayesha Kaprey, who will in turn

travel to Jana’s home in Germany in December/January 2012 for her short term Rotary Exchange. Julia said that coming on Exchange to South Africa gave her self-confidence and that her favourite photograph would have to be of Table Mountain, while Jana’s photograph for her computer screen would be of herself with her host family in Camps Bay. She found that Rustenburg taught her to be more open as a person and she valued the deep friendships that the girls of Rustenburg have. Frau R Fourie

Women’s Day Assembly 2012 RGHS commemorated and celebrated this year’s Women’s Day with an Assembly organised and hosted by the Grade 12 History class, the Grade 12 Xhosa class and the Jabulani Society on Monday 06 August. In addition, the Grade 12 History learners held a poster exhibition in the hall foyer that focused on the rich legacy that women today have inherited from a selection of South African women in a wide range of fields. The programme (below, left) provides an overview of the focus and the content of the assembly. Definite highlights were the powerful opening as Jabulani entered the darkened hall singing “Senzeni na”; the inspirational, informative and humorous address by our guest speaker, Professor Gonda Perez; Jabulani’s versions of the traditional struggle songs: “Wathinth’ abafazi” and “Thula sizwe”; Amber Stodel’s poem: “About Women it has been said” (printed below, right) and Nikki Cathcart’s song: “21st century women”, the lyrics of which are printed on page six.

Welcome: Layla Kamedien and Carla Moreira Why we commemorate Women’s Day in RSA: Simbongile Ndlangisa / Grade 12 IsiXhosa Class and Jabulani Choir: “Wathinth’ abafazi” and “Thula sizwe” Contextualising the poster Exhibition: Marzia Gertse “About women it has been said”: Amber Stodel Reflecting on the struggle for women’s rights in our world: Carla du Toit and Yusraa Abrahams “Still I rise” by Maya Angelou: Mieke Loubser and Magenta Graziani Introducing the Guest speaker: Ayanda Josie- Perez Women’s Day address: Professor G. Perez Closing words: Lailah Abdullah and Kim Petersen “21st century women” Written for this Women’s Day Assembly by Nikki Cathcart and performed by the Grade 12 History, isiXhosa classes and Jabulani.

POEM by Amber Stodel (Grade 12 History) Within the womb where we grew And the breast upon which we fed Within the arms that cradled us About women it has been said: That we are phenomenal, each a miracle and each a fortress of strength -with eyes full of soul and brilliance of an immeasurable length. From the head of a woman, filled with infinite potential To the eyes that are true, magnificent and gentle. With lips that command to be heard when words are spoken It is through the power of a woman’s speech that our lives remain unbroken, our souls are awoken and we are able to find cause to fix that which is broken. Upon the shoulders of a woman, many a tear has been shed As well as a place of comfort, a place of rest for weary heads. The hands of a woman that continue to nurture and love Transcend, with human touch, what words are capable of. And the feet of a woman, that with every step has left a mark And with every journey has carried us home safely away from the dark. Within the womb where we grew And the breast upon which we fed Within the arms that cradled us About women it has been said: That we are precious, each a treasure and each a symbol of the Divinewith eyes so magnetic and an essence purely sublime.

We can stand on our own two feet And we will show the world the heights that we can reach Well they left some really big shoes For the rest of us to fill And I’m glad to let them all know We can still kick butt in heels

A 21st century woman Has some power up her sleeves With a solid mind and a heart of gold No one knows what she’ll achieve So to all the women out there It’s time to listen up They left a huge legacy And you better keep up

Chorus x2 There’s a certain level of reChorus: spect ‘Cause we are beautiful, we That every woman deserves We can still kick butt in heels are powerful And those who don’t give it to We will still kick butt in heels No one can stop us anymore her We’ll keep kicking butt in heels We will lift our voice and Well they don’t have the nerve And we will show the world the sing heights that we can reach. That an African woman can Chorus do anything
