Rustenburg: a school of excellence where girls are leading courageously, exploring their unique potential confidently and serving the world compassionately.
2 Rustenburg Times
From the desk of the Head, Miss Bekker APPOINTMENT OF SECOND DEPUTY PRINCIPAL (PASTORAL) It is with great pleasure that we announce the appointment of Miss Gillian Blackshaw to the position of a second Deputy Principal (Pastoral), with effect from January 2012. As Rustenburg develops and grows and as we continue to realise the vision of the school and encourage our pupils to fulfil their potential in the many spheres that Rustenburg offers, we need to ensure that we are able to sustain, grow and manage the areas we offer optimally. Mrs Schnetler, who has been responsible for a number of portfolios as Senior Deputy, needs to be able to devote specific, dedicated and innovative time to fewer spheres of responsibility/shared responsibility. This she will do by concentrating on areas involving the academic programme of the school and all it entails, and work with the respective staff involved in those areas. Ms Blackshaw will concentrate on areas involving discipline, leadership and extra-mural activities, and will work with the respective staff involved in those areas.
RESULTS OF THE BY-ELECTION HELD 11 OCTOBER 2011 Our Governing Body by-election has now been completed. I wish to thank everyone for their interest and participation in the process. It gives me much pleasure to record that Lesley Shaw will be serving on the School Governing Body. We look forward to the contribution that she will make to the governance of Rustenburg High School for Girls.
Help Required RGHS is seeking the assistance of an interested mother to run the school’s Recycling Department, with the help of the Earth Children Society. Please contact Miss Bekker in this regard

From the desk of the Deputy Head, Mrs Schnetler
UNIFORM LENGTH It has come to my attention that a large number of RGHS learners are wearing uniforms, both summer and winter, that are unacceptably short. Uniforms should not be shorter than 10 cm above the knee. It is embarrassing when girls’ underwear is revealed in the process of bending over or sitting, and especially when they are walking to and from school. If this applies to your daughter, please would you attend to the lengthening of her uniform.
ABSENCE FROM SCHOOL At Rustenburg the safety of the girls is of paramount and for this reason we will be introducing a change to the absentee procedure from this term. We have been concerned that there is sometimes a long delay between a girl being marked as absent and receiving confirmation of this fact from parents or guardian. It would be possible for a child to go missing en route from home to school and for an entire day to pass with the parent assuming that she was safe at school and the school assuming she was sick at home. In the future, an SMS will be sent out from our SMSweb system to the registered parent of each child marked absent by 10am on each day. If your child is indeed sick or missing school for some other legitimate reason, you need not respond, but if you expect her
to be at school, then please contact the school office immediately so that we can follow up on her. There are many reasons that a child could be mistakenly marked as absent (e.g. being late for roll-call, meeting with a teacher during form class, etc) but we do want to make sure that everyone is accounted for every day. To this end, we need to ask you to make sure that we have the most up-to-date cellphone number for your family stored in our SMSweb system at all times – this is the facility that regularly sends you notices and reminders. Only one cellphone number per child is stored unless there are extraordinary circumstances involved. You can let us know of changes by contacting the front office or emailing info@rghs.org.za

Individual Achievers at RGHS 58 000 learners from Southern Africa wrote the First Round of the SA Mathematics Olympiad including 186 from Rustenburg. Of these, 104 proceeded to the Second Round. The Third Round is a whole new ball game with only the best 100 (approximately) taking part in each of the Senior and Junior sections. Three Rustenburg girls made that Third Round, two seniors Lauren Sanby (grade 12) and Lauren Denny (grade 10) and one junior, Rebecca Haines (grade 8). In a tough Third Round comprising just 5 questions in 4 hours, Lauren Denny, despite competing mainly against Grade 11 and 12’s achieved 9th Place and the award of a Silver Medal – an outstanding effort!
Well done, Lauren The school recently received the following letter from the Lesley Porter School of Dance
Well done, Alyxe
Dear Mrs Schnetler I thought it would be important to advise you of the wonderful achievement of one of your pupils, Alyxe Rosenberg in Grade 9. Alyxe danced in the Western Cape Solo Latin dance championships this past weekend. She competed in the YOUTH section and walked away with the BRONZE MEDAL in her section. This is quite an achievement as it was a rather large section. We are extremely proud of Alyxe as this is not only a great achievement in itself, but it also qualifies her to compete in next year’s SA Championships in September which is taking place in Nelspuit. Kind regards LESLEY PORTER

Matric Drama Final Performance Examination On the evening of 11 October, the Matric Dramatic Arts students officially concluded their acting careers at Rustenburg when they performed for the very last time, in their respective final productions, before adjudicators from the Cape Academy of Dramatic Arts and the NSC Performance Examination board. Theirs was an extra special achievement for they were part of the first ever group in the history of the school to have benefitted from studying Dramatic Arts as an examinable subject formally from Grade 8 through to Grade 12. The class drew inspiration from their studies of Samuel Beckett’s Absurdist play “Waiting for Godot,” in which two vagabonds are conceptual personifications of the human condition. One represents all things cognitive and mental (the mind), while the other is more base and physical (the body). From this emerged two original, workshop productions created by the girls themselves in response.
‘The Body’ cast (Tessa Collington-O’Malley, Bianca Ford, Hannah MacMillan, Tayla Orgill, Catherine Paterson, Lusa Seemann) considered how body image is so integrally linked to self-esteem and what happens when food is used either as an emotional reward or as a cruel punishment. The girls’ home-baked scones were used as effective theatrical properties. These baked goods were flung, with wild (and crumbling) abandon, about the Drama Studio. The official marks each of the actresses received remain confidential, however the examiners did express absolute delight with both productions and congratulated the 2011 Matric Dramatic Arts candidates on maintaining the standard of excellence which has come to be associated with the department.
‘The Mind’ cast (Nikki Baguley, Georgia Carstens, Helen Dunnell, Lauren Jankielsohn, Amy Walton, Tamsyn Wilson) explored how easily Mr A Skelly mental fracture can occur, ranging from fullblown dementia to minor yet debilitating paranoia. They used unique ideophones and phonic devices to add dimensions to what was a haunting performance.

They taught us about the animals and plants that we saw, as well as the history of the Zulu people in the area.
the wilderness area of the Umfolozi Reserve. Only 500 people per year are allowed into this area, in order to preserve its natural state. It was a privilege to be able to experience the
beautiful wilderness and to view wild animals with no fences separating us from them. We were split into two groups of seven girls, a teacher and two guides each. We carried all that we needed in our backpacks, including a delicious variety of meals, rain covers, pots, a kettle, a bare minimum of cutlery, sleeping bag and roll-up mattress, a few items of clothing, and of course, “Doug, the spade. We left nothing behind and the guides took great care to remove all traces of our campsites when we moved on.
We were privileged to view numerous animals at close range. These included white rhino, a black rhino, elephants, lions, hyenas, buffalo, wildebeest, impala, warthogs, giraffes, baboons, vultures and others. Miss M Meyer

NATIONAL ENSEMBLE COMPETITION Congratulations to our three Ensembles (Berocca G, the Jazz Combo & the String Quartet) who participated in this gruelling event on 23 and 24 September in the Fismer Hall, Stellenbosch University (we emerged through the gates of RGHS in the early hours of Sunday 25 September, tired, but elated from our exciting adventure). Our 3 Ensembles played excellently, but the competition was tough and the prizes were few. We are pleased to report, though, that our Jazz Combo received a 3rd Prize of R2000. Congratulations to Gladys Kisela, Amy Walton, Yohan Chun, Cheryl Muchapondwa and Nicola Cathcart! What an achievement, and thanks to Ms Miller for all the advice and nurturing of the combo.
RGHS received special mention for submitting not 1 but 3 ensembles and the following foreword was printed in the programme, written by the Convenor of the Judges, Magda de Vries, which sums up the benefits of participation in these ensembles: `Chamber music is such an exciting and integral part of any musician’s life. Not only do you develop your skills as a team player, but you also learn one of the most important musical lessons – the importance and art of listening. Working in an ensemble sparks creativity and creates the opportunity to collaborate with musicians across the various musical styles.’

Music Department News `RAISE THE ROOF’ HYMN FESTIVAL The members of the RGHS & RBHS Chamber Choirs, Cathedral Choirs, various professional brass and percussion players and organist Mark Mitchell performed in an inspiring Hymn Festival organised by the Cathedral’s Director of Music, David Orr, on Sunday afternoon 16 October. The concert formed part of a series of `Raise the Roof’ concerts in aid of repairs to the disintegrating roof of St Georges Cathedral. We asked some of our choir members to comment on the concert: ‘Very good choice of music. Two wonderful solos [Michael Lawrenson of RBHS on oboe in an Albinoni Concerto and our very own Alexandra Mould on recorder in a superb performance of the g minor Fantasia by Telemann]. The last hymn `Siyahamba’ really captured the joy of celebration and was the perfect end to a wonderful concert. Everyone left with a smile on their faces.’ Terusha Navsaria `Very good music. Loved the oboe! Enjoyed it very much, particularly with the organ accompaniment. It was wonderful to do the Kyrie and
Benedictus from the Jenkins’ The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace again. Loved it! ‘ Ashleigh Curtis `It was truly amazing to hear the sound of that powerful organ echoing through the church, along with our voices. To sing such music in such a beautiful setting was an overwhelming experience. Truly beautiful.’ Courtney Wallace `I think the choice of Benedictus and Kyrie was a very good one, as we enjoyed singing it, and it gave the audience goosebumps when they heard it.’ Joycelyn Foster The choirs also sang an arrangement by Ward Swingle of the Air from JS Bach’s Orchestral Suite no 3 with Cheryl Muchapondwa on percussion and Emma Ferrett of Westerford on double bass. Congratulations, too, to Amy Walton who sang the solo in the Kyrie so beautifully. It was truly a memorable occasion. As a `young’ Old Girl remarked after the concert, she felt proud to have been a member of the RGHS Chamber Choir.

Best Wishes go to our Hindu families who will be celebrating Diwali MDZANADA ANIMAL CLINIC – KHAYELITSHA Last term I appealed to the school for the donation of bric-a-brac, Kitchen utensils, old garage or garden equipment and second hand clothes. The generosity and response of pupils, parents and staff has been overwhelming. The donated items are sold in a second hand shop on the site of the Mdzanada Animal Clinic. The money generated goes towards the cost of animal treatment and strerilising of dogs and cats. The clinic is in a high density, low income area of Khayelitsha when there are numerous loved and cherished dogs and cats belonging to owners who can not afford veterinary fees, farm stock (cattle, sheep, pigs, goats and horses) and unfortunately many stray neglected and abused animals.
I would like to offer my deepest gratitude and thanks to all who responded in such a caring sympathetic manner to my appeal. The collections ongoing and we, at the Mdzanada Animal Clinic, remain grateful for the donation of unwanted items that may be cluttering up your house. Clothes and shoes that children have outgrown and items that you consider as junk (frying pans with bent handles, pots without lids, old curtains, toys etc.) are all saleable. The residents in the area benefit by buying things they may normally not afford, you benefit by getting rid of unnecessary clutter and animals benefit from the money generated. Mr Martin Altern
