Proud Finalist Winner

Our 350 th anniversary is a launchpad for new adventures as our RGS 350 themes (page 2) inspire us over the coming years to dream bigger and aim higher for the children in our care - that is the Reigate Way. Initiatives and improvements include building a new Sports Centre and making big strides with our eco strategy. We will offer amazing opportunities to students such as performing at the Globe, Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club and St Paul’s Cathedral to playing sport at Wimbledon and participating in global student leadership events. There is so much more to come. Since 1675, RGS has been a place to grow - a big family ambitiously nurturing students to flourish as individuals, to enjoy every day of their childhood, to do great things and to make the world a better place.

The butterfly symbol of RGS 350 reminds us that, like the butterfly effect, small, thoughtful actions can create positive ripples of change. We are determined to build a legacy that lasts. Our focus is firmly on the future - on creating new and ever more inspiring opportunities for every Reigatian to grow, thrive and take their place as future leaders. We do what it takes to set them up for a happy and successful adult life, whether through our significant careers support, the programmes to develop skills and qualities of character, or through the work of our RGS Foundation which enables a connected community, helping Reigatians everywhere, during school days and throughout their life.

The Pilgrim Review showcases the energy and optimism of life at RGS. Our students are plotting their own careful and bespoke course, living out the themes of kindness, generosity, international citizenship, and environmental responsibility. From the

Kindness Festival to collaborating with our Global Village of schools, from volunteering to fundraising, from planting 3500 new trees to a bigger than ever summer Arts festival - Hartsfest 350 - our young people continue to make an impact within and beyond our school community.

The stories within these pages highlight the breadth of life at RGS - artistic creativity, sporting achievements, academic excellence, public speaking and cultural activity. They remind me why our shared commitment to the children in our care remains at the heart of everything we do. Together, we are building a brighter future for today’s students and for the Reigatians yet to join us.

I hope you enjoy this glimpse into the life of our extraordinary school.

With warm wishes

A BRIGHT FUTURE: RGS'S DECADE OF DIFFERENCE IN

ACTION

2025 marks the 350 th anniversary of our founding by Henry Smith’s legacy in 1675. For 350 years, since the year Sir Christopher Wren laid the foundation stone for St Paul’s Cathedral in London, Reigate Grammar School has been nurturing life chances and helping families at the heart of the community. So, we now kick off a decade of making a difference. It will see us commit to bringing us all together, across the RGS Global Village, to make a difference in our communities, to say thank you to all who have worked with us, to celebrate and have fun!

This landmark year is not only a moment to reflect on our heritage but also an opportunity to chart an ambitious, forwardlooking journey. Our commitment to six core values - Be Global, Be Green, Be Partners, Be Inspired, Be Giving, and Be Kind - guides us in shaping a future where every child thrives, contributes, and grows.

Over the next three years and beyond, the Decade of Difference will be brought to life through an exciting array of initiatives and events, each designed to inspire and enrich our students' education. These projects provide an unparalleled learning experience, grounded in community, sustainability, and a global perspective.

A Legacy for the Future

Our Decade of Difference is a pledge to ensure that RGS continues to flourish for generations to come. With iconic events like the 350 Gala Ball, a History Exhibition and the creation of a celebration mural, we will honour our past while boldly stepping into the future.

Joining RGS means being part of this incredible journey. It means your child will have access to world-class opportunities, develop a deep sense of purpose and forge friendships and memories that last forever. Together, let us celebrate the values that make RGS truly special and look forward to an extraordinary decade ahead.

Be Global Embracing a World of Opportunities

Through our Be Global initiatives, students will embrace the world as their classroom, with opportunities to participate in extraordinary experiences such as the Global Village Student Leadership Conference, cultural celebrations like Lunar New Year, and international trips to a multitude of countries including USA, Iceland, and Greece. These adventures foster a deep appreciation for diversity, global citizenship, and the interconnectedness of our world.

Be Green Leading in Sustainability

We are proud to nurture a new generation of environmental champions. In the coming years, students will engage in handson sustainability projects such as beach clean-ups, tree planting, and wildlife habitat restoration. Events like the Sustainability Careers Expo and other eco initiatives will equip them with the tools to lead by example in tackling environmental challenges.

Be Partners

Building Stronger Communities

Community partnerships lie at the heart of our vision. From the new Community Sports Centre to the RGS Esports tournament connecting local primary schools, to careers support for state schools, masterclasses and a primary school book club, we are creating meaningful connections that enhance education and opportunity for all. Our students will also collaborate with charity partners, gaining invaluable insights into social responsibility.

Join us for a series of exciting events marking this historic milestone.

Be Giving A Call to Action in Philanthropy

Generosity and compassion are the cornerstones of an RGS education. Our Christmas charity campaigns, writing competitions, and outreach projects teach students the value of giving back. Through these efforts, we inspire them to make a meaningful impact on society and grow into empathetic, thoughtful leaders.

Be Kind Encouraging Wellbeing and Belonging

Kindness is at the heart of our school. Signature initiatives such as the Kindness Festival and the Festival of Diversity and Inclusion celebrate our commitment to wellbeing. Our pastoral care and whole-school coaching framework ensure every student feels valued and supported, creating memories that last a lifetime.

Be Inspired Bringing Learning to Life

We are passionate about providing transformative experiences that bring learning to life. Highlights for our students will include performances at the West End, Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club and St Paul’s Cathedral; cricket at The Oval, tennis at Wimbledon, and rugby at the Saracen’s StoneX stadium; and participation in special 350 events like the RGS Young Musician of the Year, Art Exhibition and Hartsfest outdoor music festival. Pledge Launch

As part of our special launch celebration, RGS students proudly received their commemorative 350th anniversary pin badge and chose a coloured butterfly, symbolising one of our six anniversary themes: Be Global, Be Giving, Be Green, Be Kind, Be Partners, Be Inspired. These themes capture the values that define RGS – a commitment to making a difference in the world, in our community, and in ourselves.

Be Happy A Joyful Start to the Academic Year

The ethos of the Autumn Term at RGS is beautifully encapsulated in our Admissions Ceremonies. After our new First Form (Year 7) students enjoyed their Induction Day, they were formally welcomed into their Houses and the school community in front of their proud parents.

The ceremony programme featured a poignant quote from Albert Einstein:

“Try not to become a man of success, but rather try to become a man of value.”

This sentiment perfectly reflects the RGS way, where we aim to inspire both intellectual growth and personal character.

From the lingering warmth of summer to the festive glow of Christmas lights, the autumn term is a time of adventure and discovery. Aristotle’s timeless wisdom also captures our ethos:

“Education of the mind without education of the heart is no education at all.”

At RGS, we embrace this philosophy wholeheartedly, fostering an environment where laughter and joy are as important as academic excellence. Our mission is to educate minds, nurture hearts, and prepare students for a life of happiness and success beyond the classroom.

Autumn Term at RGS ADVENTURES AND ACHIEVEMENTS

The term began with Activities Day, offering students a diverse range of trips and experiences. Highlights included Out of Bounds adventures, science explorations at Chessington, outdoor challenges at Walton Firs activity centre and Bronze DofE expeditions along local trails. Our students also ventured further afield:

„ Geographers explored Shoreditch on a walking tour;

„ Linguists sampled tapas and visited Tate;

„ Physicists investigated materials at a testing lab and the Tower Bridge engine rooms;

„ Fifth and Sixth Form students explored Brighton as an ecosustainable city, Westminster, Bloomsbury, and the British Museum on a London Literary walking tour, as well as the Freud Museum, the Old Operating Theatre, the Wellcome Collection and the V&A.

Meanwhile, other Sixth Formers focused on their futures, working on UCAS applications, preparing for the 28 th annual Reigate Model United Nations (ReiMUN28), or participating in the CCF range day at Longmoor.

EXCITING DEVELOPMENTS

A major highlight of the term was the installation of our new climbing wall, made possible through the generous support of the RGS Parents’ and Friends’ Association (RGS PFA). This fantastic addition will enhance our outdoor education programme, providing opportunities for all students to challenge themselves and develop new skills.

At RGS, we strive to ensure that every term is filled with opportunity, joy, and growth - autumn was no exception. From the warm welcome of our Admissions Ceremonies to the excitement of trips, challenges, and new facilities, the spirit of RGS continues to shine.

A Magical RGS Christmas: Fun, Festivities, and Giving Back

The Christmas season at Reigate Grammar School is always a highlight of the year, filled with joy, laughter, and generosity. Our long-standing traditions of festive fun and community spirit bring students and staff together for a wonderful end to the term. Here’s how RGS celebrated this year, with cherished annual events and heartwarming moments.

WINTER MAGIC IN THE PLAYGROUND!

One of the most magical parts of the RGS festive season is the transformation of the playground into a Winter Wonderland. With a sparkling ice rink, a swirling snow machine, festive music, and steaming cups of hot chocolate, students embrace the excitement of the season.

FESTIVE FUNDRAISING FUN

Every December, RGS students and staff embrace the true spirit of giving. This year was no exception, as the athletics club hosted the ever-popular Santa Run, followed by an Elf Fun Run in Games lessons, students raised funds for The Children’s Trust in Tadworth. The festive fun continued with Cosy Jumper Day, when students and staff wore their snuggest, most creative Christmas jumpers while raising money for the Renewed Hope charity, helping to support local communities in need.

CHRISTMAS TRADITIONS AND CELEBRATION

RGS wouldn’t be the same without its cherished House Singing Competition, where students bring their A-game to deliver spectacular performances. This much-anticipated event captures the school’s spirit of camaraderie, talent, and a touch of friendly rivalry. The winners this year were Williamson with a rendition of Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree.

The House competition concluded with the whole school coming together to sing the 12 Days of Christmas - a moment of laughter, unity and festive fun that students and staff treasure every December.

A TIMELESS TRADITION AT RGS

These annual events have become an integral part of the RGS Christmas experience, a time when our community comes together to share joy, celebrate creativity and give back to those in need. From the ice rink to Carols by Candlelight, these much-loved traditions bring the magic of Christmas to life and remind us of the values that make RGS a special place.

CAROLS BY CANDLELIGHT: A FESTIVE FINALE

To round off the term, the annual Carols by Candlelight brought students, staff, and families together for a heartwarming evening of traditional Christmas music. Held in the beautiful setting of St Mary’s Church, the service created a magical atmosphere to close the term for Christmas.

Be Global

We pledge to embrace diversity and promote global understanding, ensuring every student is prepared to make a positive impact in an interconnected world.

SPOTLIGHT ON RGS VIETNAM: A WORLD OF OPPORTUNITY

Imagine a school where children and staff representing more than 40 nationalities come together to learn, grow, and thrive - a school that combines the best of British education with a truly global outlook. Welcome to RGS Vietnam, a vibrant international school in the heart of Hanoi that’s making waves across Southeast Asia.

Since opening its doors in 2021, RGS Vietnam has become a sought-after destination for families who want their children to enjoy a first-class education. It’s not just the school’s excellent International Baccalaureate (IB) results - four points above the global average this year - or the fact that it’s backed by Reigate Grammar School in the UK, with its centuries of expertise in education. It’s the warm inclusive community, the buzz of creativity and the endless opportunities that make it so special.

At RGS Vietnam, students aren’t just learning Maths and Science - they’re discovering music, art, culture, and sport in equal measure. Whether performing in the stunning new concert hall (a recent highlight celebrated by Headmaster Shaun Fenton during his visit) or representing the school in sports competitions, children here are encouraged to explore their passions and develop confidence for the future.

With over 450 pupils, the school’s not-for-profit model means that many pupils receive financial support, making a world-class education accessible to families who might not have dreamed it possible. This is a school where potential is nurtured, doors are opened, and futures are bright.

Under the leadership of Ms Thuy, who founded the school in partnership with RGS UK and Headmaster Patrick Glennon, RGS Vietnam is helping to shape the next generation of global citizens, creating opportunities for students to connect, learn, and thrive in an international partnership.

EXPANDING THE REIGATIAN FOOTPRINT IN SOUTHEAST ASIA

Plans are well underway to expand the presence of Reigate Grammar School in Southeast Asia, with the development of RGS Kuala Lumpur and RGS Phnom Penh gaining momentum. It is anticipated that these schools will officially join the RGS Global Village in the coming year, enhancing opportunities for collaboration across the region and further enriching the diversity of our global community.

Be Global

ReiMUN28 : SHAPING FUTURE LEADERS THROUGH DEBATE AND INNOVATION

In October, RGS proudly hosted the 28th annual Reigate Grammar School Model United Nations conference, ReiMUN28, marking another milestone in the development of our students as futureready leaders. With 285 students from 22 schools participating, the event was a dynamic showcase of debate, collaboration, and forward-thinking solutions to some of the world’s most pressing issues.

This year’s conference tackled critical topics, including the international recognition of the State of Palestine and the protection of minority languages, encouraging students to engage with complex global challenges. The highlight of the event was an inspiring keynote address by Mark Bowden CMG, a former senior UN official, who shared invaluable insights into the United Nations' role in addressing international crises and fostering cooperation.

Innovating for the Future

ReiMUN28 also demonstrated RGS’s commitment to sustainability and innovation. RGS MUSIC

A TERM OF TALENT, TEAMWORK, AND TRIUMPH

Music is at the heart of Reigate Grammar School life and last term was no exception. From inspiring concerts to intimate workshops, our students and community came together to celebrate the joy and creativity that music brings.

RGS Music: A Term of Musical Variety

RGS Music presented a rich variety of performances last term, ranging from choral workshops and lunchtime recitals to major concerts and seasonal events.

RGS Unplugged featured a record number of student performances, spanning multiple genres with support from a student string quartet and percussionists. The start of the RGS Young Musician of the Year competition gave brass and woodwind players the opportunity to perform for renowned trumpeter Crispian Steele-Perkins, with finalists selected for the next stage later this year. The Concert and Cake series provided a platform for soloists, with performances ranging from Brahms to musical theatre.

The highlight of the year was RGS in Concert at Leatherhead Theatre, where large ensembles and choirs performed an eclectic programme from Rossini to Radiohead, and our year-long celebration of the Class of 2025 began with Upper Sixth Form student Brayden J performing a Horn Concerto with Symphony Orchestra conducted by fellow Upper Sixth Form student Matty O.

The term concluded with Carols by Candlelight at St Mary’s Church, featuring BBC Young Chorister of the Year, Sharon L with contributions from all RGS choirs. Across every event, students demonstrated commitment and musicality, making for an engaging and varied programme.

Looking Ahead

With exciting events ahead, including the RGS 350 th Anniversary Concert at Guildford Cathedral - culminating in a 200-strong performance of Mozart’s Requiem - as well as evensong at St Paul’s, more Unplugged evenings and the final of our RGS Young Musician of the Year competition, the future of RGS Music looks as bright as ever.

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT

Reigate Grammar School is thrilled to celebrate the incredible achievement of Sharon L, a Fifth Form student and talented member of the RGS Sir Godfrey Searle Choir, who has been crowned Senior Winner of the BBC Young Chorister of the Year 2024! Sharon’s journey to this prestigious title has been nothing short of remarkable, showcasing her exceptional talent and dedication to music.

An Unforgettable Final

The final, which aired on Sunday 1 December 2024, was hosted by the beloved Aled Jones and judged by an esteemed panel of musical icons: Katherine Jenkins, Bob Chilcott, and YolanDa Brown. Sharon’s breathtaking performance stood out among the group of immensely talented finalists.

After her stunning rendition, Bob Chilcott praised Sharon, saying: “You created this fragile atmosphere, but there was nothing fragile about the way you sang it.”

When announcing Sharon as the winner, Katherine Jenkins remarked: “We heard three truly exceptional voices, but the winner had the edge because they challenged themselves in terms of repertoire and succeeded in the delivery.”

Sharon’s Reflections

Reflecting on her experience, Sharon shared:

“It’s been such an amazing and unforgettable journey to compete in the competition as a semi-finalist. I didn’t dare imagine being one of the five senior choristers standing on such a prestigious stage, in front of judges I respect so much, let alone being selected as the Senior Young Chorister of the Year. This experience has given me so much confidence and has helped me grow musically.”

A New Beginning

Having moved to the UK from Hong Kong just over two years ago, Sharon’s journey has been one of adaptation, growth and embracing new opportunities. In an interview with the BBC, she shared her inspiring story in her own words.

Reflecting on her move to the UK, Sharon described how she and her family embraced a fresh start.

“We just moved to this really foreign country, which I’ve never been to before and at first it was really scary. We just love how peaceful it is and it’s not as busy as the hustle and bustle in Hong Kong.”

At RGS, Sharon has fully immersed herself in music.

“My involvement in singing in school is quite varied, I’d say, because I’m Head Chorister and we do services over the week, we do Matins and we do Evensongs, and sometimes even songs in other cathedrals as well. So, I get to actually know people from the choir and we’ve become great friends, and for that, I’m just grateful.”

Discovering Choral Music

British choral traditions have been a new experience for Sharon.

“British choral music is new to me as we’ve never had that in Hong Kong. It’s ceremonial here and that ceremony is what makes it so special, because there is a meaning behind every single thing.”

Sharon shared her love for the variety of music she performs.

“We do a range of both modern choral music and older choral music. Older pieces have that sense of peace and stillness, whereas the modern ones, they play around with chords, harmony, much more, and it’s just nice to do a range of them.”

Inspiring the Future

As Sharon takes this exciting step forward in her musical career, we are immensely proud of her achievement. Her story is a shining example of how passion, commitment and support can create extraordinary opportunities. Sharon’s success is proof not only of her extraordinary vocal talent but also of her hard work, resilience and the guidance she has received as part of the choir. Her singing teacher, Ms Jessica Broad, has played a vital role in teaching, nurturing, and building Sharon’s confidence, helping her develop both her vocal ability and self-assurance. Alongside her, Mrs Glynne-Jones, Head of Choral Music at RGS, has been a key figure in shaping Sharon’s musical journey, refining her artistry and providing invaluable support.

Following her win, Sharon and the RGS Godfrey Searle Choir performed for the BBC’s Sunday Worship, broadcast live from St Mary’s Church, Reigate, on 12 January 2025. While she sings sacred music with the choir, Sharon also performs a wider repertoire with Senior Girls’ Voices and was a soloist at Jazz After Dark with a professional jazz trio.

THE RISE OF FOOTBALL AT RGS: OPPORTUNITY, GROWTH, AND TEAM SPIRIT

Football at RGS has seen remarkable growth in recent years, transforming into a core part of the school’s sporting life. Where once it struggled to find space in a busy co-curricular schedule, today it thrives with training sessions four days a week, a full slate of fixtures and integration as a games option for the Fifth and Sixth Form. Football at RGS is a dynamic and inclusive programme that reflects the school’s commitment to strengthening talent, teamwork, and lifelong friendships.

Coaching Excellence and Partnerships

One of the standout features of RGS Football is the exceptional standard of coaching available to students. A new partnership with Dorking Wanderers Football Club (DWFC) brings first team and academy coaches into the fold, complementing the school’s experienced staff. This collaboration has elevated training sessions, offering students insights and techniques from professionals at the top of their game. The DWFC coaches have brought enthusiasm and expertise that resonate with players across all skill levels, sparking their growth as athletes and individuals.

Girls’ Football

The expansion of girls’ football at RGS has been particularly inspiring. With teams fielded across multiple year groups, the enthusiasm has been palpable. Highlights include the U15s playing a thrilling match at Meadowbank Stadium and the U12 Girls’ triumph in Reigate School's seven-a-side tournament. The rising profile of girls’ football, and the opportunities created by matches under the lights at professional venues create significant opportunities for students.

A Welcoming, Inclusive Environment

Whether students are aspiring professionals or simply seeking to enjoy a kick-about, the RGS Football programme caters to all. After-school training sessions at South Park welcome players of all abilities, ensuring everyone who wants to be part of a team can find their place. With both A and B team fixtures, every player has the chance to represent the school competitively while still enjoying the camaraderie of the sport.

Celebrating Success

This season has been brimming with achievements, including:

„ Girls’ U12 victory in Reigate School’s seven-a-side tournament;

„ Boys’ 1st XI win over Dorking Wanderers Academy in a hard-fought 3-2 game;

„ Thrilling matches at Meadowbank Stadium for both girls’ and boys’ teams.

And there’s much more on the horizon. The U13 and U15 girls’ teams are entering the prestigious England Schools FA National tournaments, while senior boys’ and girls’ teams gear up for exciting fixtures and plans for an annual football tour next year.

Building Lifelong Skills and Friendships

Football at RGS isn’t just about sport, it’s about shaping character. The programme fosters leadership, teamwork, and resilience, helping students develop essential life skills. Younger players find role models in their senior teammates, while shared victories (and the occasional defeats) bring players closer together. These connections extend beyond the pitch, building a community of support and friendship that lasts through school and beyond.

A Vision for the Future

Looking ahead, RGS has ambitious plans to continue enhancing the football programme. With improved facilities, expanded opportunities, and even greater integration into the cocurricular experience, the school is committed to making football accessible and enriching for every student.

Leading by Example

At the heart of this transformation is the passion and dedication of the staff and students. Quentin Hoad, RGS' Head of Football says he is “inspired by the unwavering support of colleagues and the enthusiasm of players”, as he oversees this remarkable growth. Working alongside outstanding student captains who mentor younger players and contribute ideas for improvement, the programme is another example of RGS’s ethos of happy children achieving more.

CORSAIR ESPORTS HUB

The RGS Esports Hub is a decisive step into one of the world’s fastest-growing industries. The eyes of every child who enters widen with excitement at the possibilities of fun and learning through teamwork, competition and creativity.

Thanks to the incredible generosity of Andy Paul (RGS 1968), CEO of Corsair, we opened our new cutting-edge Esports Hub at the start of the autumn term. The Hub equips students with valuable skills that span coding, design, event management and more, all within a world-class esports environment, preparing children for career paths across a wide spectrum of industries.

Headmaster Shaun Fenton says,

"Esports is a thriving global industry that teaches teamwork, leadership and problem-solving, while also being tremendous fun. School should be fun! This allows us to help the community and our own children. We are so grateful to Andy Paul and Corsair.”

RGS is committed to making the Hub available not only to its students but also to the wider community, offering local children and groups access to one of the UK's top esports facilities.

Andy Paul told us:

“I got involved in the project when one of the IT teachers called me to see if we could help with some keyboards and mice and we discussed it a little bit and realised that they actually needed a complete set of gaming PCs, which we were happy to donate. Then the school decided to get really behind it and transform the whole room into a proper esports gaming room.

It was fun to come back to RGS for the launch and to see the children play games. Last time we were here, we watched about 20 sets of kids build the PCs and it was great to see happy faces when the PCs were built and they could start playing games on them!”

"The esport hub is linked directly to the school ethos: we believe that happy children do great things - and every single child who has walked through the door to Room 19 has said, “Wow!” As Headmaster, there's nothing better than thinking that the children might walk to school with a sense of excitement and opportunity, and that this day could be something special. The esport hub is right at the heart of that ethos.” Shaun Fenton.

ALL NEW SPORTS CENTRE

EXCITING NEW CHAPTER: DEVELOPMENT OF OUR SPORTS CENTRE

We are thrilled to share that plans for our new sports centre have received planning approval, marking an exciting next chapter in Reigate Grammar School’s journey. The new facility will enhance the sporting experience for our students while offering excellent opportunities for the wider community. As we celebrate RGS’s 350 th anniversary this year, this project is part of our Changing Lives, Building Futures fundraising campaign.

While our current facilities have served the school well, this new centre represents a significant and inspiring upgrade designed to offer the very best in sports, fitness, and wellness opportunities for our students and wider community. Throughout construction, the current sports hall will remain open, with plans to re-purpose it once the new centre is completed.

Further details will be shared in the coming months, with a full project launch later this year. We thank everyone in the RGS community and our neighbours for their support as we embark on this exciting new development that will shape the RGS experience for generations to come.

REIGATIAN REFLECTIONS

REBECCA PUTTOCK, (RGS 1998–2006)

Rebecca Puttock has taken an extraordinary journey since leaving Reigate Grammar School, building a career that has seen her travel the globe and establish herself as a leader in the luxury travel industry. While most of her Sixth Form peers followed the conventional path to university, Rebecca chose to explore the world, purchasing a oneway ticket to Australia via Africa and spending almost four years travelling across 36 countries. With limited access to communication, Rebecca embraced the adventure, experiencing the highs of bucket-list travel and the challenges of life on the move. She worked as a Ski Technician, combining her love for the sport with the need to support her explorations, before returning to the UK with a thirst for learning.

After a stint at university, Rebecca found her passion lay in creating unforgettable travel experiences for others. She began her career organising school ski trips to North America before moving into the world of luxury travel at American Express, managing the bespoke needs of the world’s wealthiest clients. From there, she joined a safari tour operator, leading a team of 20 and thriving in the world of tailor-made travel.

In 2018, life presented Rebecca with a significant challenge when she fell ill and was unable to work. However, she turned adversity into opportunity and founded her own company, Wanderlux Travel . The company has flourished under her leadership, gaining recognition for its personalised, high-end travel experiences. Wanderlux has been celebrated with numerous accolades, including winning the 2023 Business Awards UK for Boutique Travel Retailer of the Year and Independent Travel Retailer of the Year. It was also named Small Business of the Year in 2021 and shortlisted for the Aspire Travel Club Aspire Awards 2024 in the category of Independent Luxury Agency of the Year. Most recently, Wanderlux is a finalist in the TTG Luxury Travel Awards 2025 for Luxury Travel Designer of the Year.

Rebecca’s journey is a story of resilience, ambition, and a commitment to following her passions. From working as a resort rep to managing a globally recognised travel company, she demonstrates how stepping off the beaten path can lead to extraordinary opportunities. Today, Rebecca’s travel company is an inspiring vision for our students to dream big, explore the world, and turn passions into careers.

MATT BURNS, (RGS 2004–2011)

Matt Burns has forged an impressive career in the performing arts, combining his passions for acting and music. A vibrant member of the RGS community during his school years, Matt credits much of his inspiration to his time at RGS, where the encouragement of teachers like Sarah Branston and Dave Jackson, alongside the school’s thriving Drama and Music departments, helped him discover his love for the stage. From playing the Giant in Jack and the Beanstalk in junior school to joining the prestigious National Youth Theatre, Matt’s early experiences at RGS set the foundation for his flourishing career.

Currently, Matt is captivating audiences in the West End production of The Curious Case of Benjamin Button: A New Musical, running at the Ambassadors Theatre in London. This re-imagined musical has been lauded for its innovative storytelling and emotional depth, with Matt’s performance showcasing his extraordinary talent as both an actor and musician. The show, described as "a musical to treasure," offers audiences a unique theatrical experience that has firmly established Matt as a key figure in London’s theatre scene. For those wishing to see Matt in action, tickets and more information can be found on the official website: Ambassadors Theatre

Reflecting on his time at RGS, Matt often highlights a defining moment in an English class where a simple exercise transformed the classroom into a dressing room. That light-bulb moment ignited his passion for drama, sparking a journey that has led him to the professional stage. Now, as a seasoned performer, Matt continues to give back to the school that shaped him, returning to RGS to teach Drama and inspire the next generation of performers. He describes this opportunity as “a privilege,” enabling him to pass on his knowledge and encourage students to explore new ways of thinking and expressing themselves.

From RGS productions to the bright lights of the West End, Matt Burns has carved out a successful career that showcases his dedication, creativity, and love for the arts. Whether teaching students or captivating audiences, he remains an example of the outstanding talent nurtured at Reigate Grammar School and is an inspiration for any student with dreams of performing on the stage.

FOUNDATION

EIGATE G AMMA SCHOOL

In 2025, we come together to celebrate the historic milestone of Reigate Grammar School’s 350 th anniversary. We are committed to a decade of philanthropic celebration, creating a new legacy for generations to come, just as Henry Smith did before us. His vision sparked a butterfly effect, showing how even the smallest act of generosity can profoundly impact the lives of others.

Reigate Grammar School was founded through the philanthropic spirit of Henry Smith, a successful London merchant who bequeathed a sum of money to educate the poor boys of Reigate. This gift led to the founding of the school in 1675, and what is truly remarkable is that the school continues to stand today on its original site.

The RGS Foundation is dedicated to fostering meaningful relationships, maintaining engagement, and reaching out to our community to ensure the legacy of RGS endures for another 350 years.
