2 Reigate Grammar School’s co-curricular programme is the heartbeat of the school and we hope that parents will join us in encouraging students to get involved in whichever club or activity appeals. It is never too late to try something new, and staff are always keen to hear from students themselves about starting up new clubs and ventures. RGS CLUBS AND ACTIVITIES

Section Activities

Cadets will learn drill, how to wear the correct uniform, weapon handling and safety, first aid and navigation. They will also learn independence, leadership and team skills and challenge themselves in so many rewarding and exciting ways. There is a large number of adventurous training activities on offer throughout the year including kayaking, canoeing, climbing, mountain biking, walking and parachuting.

Cadets and former cadets retain the status of civilians in all respects but will leave the CCF at the end of their time at RGS with a better understanding and appreciation for what the armed forces do. They will have the chance to experience a number of life-changing opportunities not open to those outside the CCF and will be able to draw on these throughout life, whatever path they wish to take. Corps of Drums

The Combined Cadet Force (CCF)

The Corps of Drums is a standalone activity that complements the CCF. It is a ceremonial, public face of the CCF and of the school. There are chances to progress musically and learn new instruments. As a drummer progresses, he or she may take on more responsibility and lead groups within the Corps. There are a number of events and functions at which the Corps of Drums performs throughout the year which promote the school and also help with the ceremonial side of the CCF. Students in the First to Sixth Forms may join the Corps of Drums.

Cadets follow a syllabus appropriate to their section. Navy Section This includes learning about many aspects of seamanship, how to operate powerboats and how to sail. Army Section Cadets learn about survival in the field, tactics and develop weapon skills to a high level. RAF Section Cadets learn about aircraft, how they fly and air navigation in preparation for flying and gliding. Will my child be liable for military service?

Contingent Activities

The CCF is a Ministry of Defence sponsored organisation working through schools. The aim of training is to develop in cadets qualities of responsibility, self-reliance, resourcefulness, endurance, perseverance and a sense of service to the community. At Reigate Grammar School we have Royal Navy, Army and RAF sections which aim to give cadets knowledge of these sectors of the armed forces. The self-confidence, self-discipline and leadership skills required in service life are equally vital in civilian life.

Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (DofE)

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (DofE) is a major part of life at Reigate Grammar School and the school is a dedicated DofE centre. Large numbers of students each year commit an enormous number of hours to expeditions, sports, helping the local community and learning new skills. In recent years, RGS has seen more candidates receive their Bronze, Silver and Gold certificates than any other school in Surrey. At each level, the award is made of four sections.

Expeditions Participants plan, prepare and undertake an adventurous journey usually on foot but sometimes on bicycles, horseback or in canoes, often in an unfamiliar and remote environment. Students become part of a self-reliant team working together to overcome challenges. The training syllabus includes safety and emergency procedures, first aid, navigation, route-finding, map and compass skills, camp craft, country, highway and water sports codes and team building. Skills Developing personal interests and learning practical skills gives participants the chance to learn something new, get organised, meet new people, try something different and have fun.

Volunteering The aim is to give service to other people and to the local community. It gives participants the opportunity to increase their self-confidence, accept responsibility, understand strengths, appreciate other people and care for the environment.

Physical Recreation Participants get involved in a sport or physical activity which gives pupils opportunities to improve fitness, meet new challenges, increase self-confidence and gain a sense of achievement.
