DIRECTOR OF SPORT

WELCOME Last term was a record-breaking year for sport with Hockey, Athletics, Netball, Swimming and Rugby Sevens all making great strides through to the late stages of National Competitions. We enjoyed a balmy second half of the summer term after an extremely wet Easter period and hundreds of pupils represented the school. The highlight of the term was Sports Day, and it was another huge success. It was wonderful to see so many families supporting the pupils at RGS Hartswood for this event.    We have five National quarter-finalists with our Netball and Many individuals and teams flourished at RGS last term. Our junior golf team progressed to the National finals as the only mixed pair in the entire competition. We had sailors and skiers competing at National levels. Our athletes made the England Athletics National Competition in three different year groups, having been crowned First Form and Second Form District champions in both boys’ and girls’ competitions. A second form student won the ‘Athlete of the Year’ award for Surrey. Team success came with our U13 Boys hockey team reaching the National Finals for the top five teams in the country. Our

Boys and Girls 1st XI cricket teams both beat key teams and competed on the biggest stage and our Boys 1st XI football team narrowly missed achieving their first trophy of the year with a loss in the final of the London and SE Cup. However, one of the most pleasing awards received was the ‘Fair Play’ award won by Third Form boys at the Surrey Tennis festival. They showed positive character and a sense of fair play (as well as being successful) and were selected from dozens of schools to win the award. It is something to really celebrate – students who can be both fiercely competitive but hold their values at the heart of all they do. I do hope you enjoy the new academic year as much as we will and look forward to seeing you all on the sidelines soon. You can stay in touch with all of the sporting stories by reading the Weekly Sports Bulletin which is published each Friday in the Headmaster’s bulletin. To share your stories with us please do get in touch via bulletin@reigategrammar.org or to gjb@ reigategrammar.org.   George Browning, Director of Sport Sport continues to evolve at RGS with increasing emphasis on our vision to develop Great People Through Sport. Being part of Team Reigate is about being part of something bigger than yourself and we hope that all students will have the chance to shine. We want all students to experience sport in line with our six missions to create great people, shown here. Much of what we do revolves around creating meaningful and memorable experiences for the students of which there should be many each term. We want to create an environment where all students have a positive experience during fixtures. This means both RGS and opposition teams. Being part of Team Reigate is about being part of something bigger than yourself and we hope that all pupils will have the chance to shine in this environment. Watch our Vision for Sport short film.

HIGH PERFORMANCE SPORT

 Enabling our pupils to aspire for the best they can be, irrespective of their starting point and with a long-term view of success is fundamental to our vision for sport. As part of this experience and to supplement the excellent coaching during games and after school sessions, the HighPerformance Hub provides access to experiences and performance habits that are designed to support and challenge in equal measure. Jack Emmerson, Assistant Director of Sport, Performance

4

The High-Performance Hub has continued to be a thread that many of our pupils use to support their sporting development. This term the ‘HPH’ has looked like lunchtime sessions every Friday, exploring sleep habits, psychological skills and pupil workload awareness, as well as a nutrition seminar where pupils were able to apply some theory into making their own healthy, energy packed snacks! These varied experiences have prompted conversations and interventions across pupils and staff and we look forward to further opportunities through the spring and summer terms. This focus on holistic development and ‘Great People Through Sport’ has underpinned the approach throughout.   For our senior sports people male and female cricketer scholars, there have been weekly (or more often!) sessions throughout the off season to enable them

to prepare for the upcoming competitive phases of their respective programmes. These have been well attended and allowed our coaches to provide an individualised and bespoke programme of development. In a similar vein, our Athletic Development programme has enabled boys and girls to access sessions pre, during and post school. It has been great to see so many First and Secondyear pupils in particular attending these, laying the foundations for great movement and engagement in sport as they move through the school.

ENGAGEMENT SPORT Engagement at RGS has four main pillars within sport and PE:

Games Lessons   These are the foundation blocks for our engagement and are the entry point for all pupils to engage with sport at RGS. Recently we have introduced a pupil driven pathway in PE where from the Third-Fifth form onwards pupils are able to determine which intensity rating the are working at, using a ‘chilli heat scale’. This has allowed greater focus, higher activity levels and given pupils greater autonomy of their PE journey.

5

Our games programme is built upon a traditional model where team sports are on offer to all. However, our commitment to broaden the offering allows the programme to be supplemented by introducing individual and contemporary sports. As pupils reach our Sixth Form the programme is totally pupil driven, where they can select their sport/ activity of choice. The Sixth Form games options for Autumn 2023 is wide-ranging. We continue to work with

our students to provide them with their sports and activities of choice and are proud to include yoga, dance, open fitness sessions, and spin bike classes based on feedback from recent student voice sessions.   After school clubs and fixtures/competitions Our after-school clubs and activities programme continue from where our games programme stops, we now offer over 60 weekly sports clubs where pupils can further

develop their passion in sport and physical activities.   We acknowledge that many pupils want to participate in competitive sport and we encourage all our pupils to represent RGS in their time here. We arrange fixtures and competitions within our house community as well as with local schools to allow our pupils to showcase their skills. Craig Burgess, Assistant Director of Sport, Engagement

HOCKEY The hockey in the Autumn Term is much anticipated after a long Summer in which many of our students will have been involved in Summer courses and camps and performance trials for County or Talent Academy.

Preparation for the season starts in earnest in late August, when many of our students get ready for the Girls’ Hockey in the Autumn term by going on a pre-season tour. This gives them the opportunity to experience Hockey in greater depth playing against the difference styles in Holland and soaking up the culture of this great ‘Hockey Nation’ – there is no better place to put our hockey to the test. Once they have returned there will then be a full programme of pre-season training prior to the start of term. As soon as term starts, we are straight into national cup competitions for each age group. RGS enter both England Hockey and the Independent Schools Cup, both of which are national competitions, and this gives us the opportunity to test ourselves against some of the best hockey schools in the country. In the last few years, we have enjoyed a high level of success in these competitions with various age groups, from our pinnacle of being consecutive National champions with U13 girls two years running to regularly finishing in the last 8 of the competition in the more senior age groups. Every student has access to hockey within a weekly games session, as well as an after-school practice which not only

allows students to work on improving individual skills, but also team ethos and development in preparation for midweek and Saturday fixtures. In the senior age groups there are A-C teams and in the junior years there are A-F teams, meaning there is a full programme in place for students of all abilities and experience. Indoor Hockey is an expanding programme at RGS with early morning sessions available where pupils can learn the finer points of the indoor game in preparation for entering a national competition, or just use it as an opportunity to practice their ‘outdoor skills indoors’ in the off season. At RGS we feel it is important to find the right level of challenge in all matches, and students are encouraged to play in a range of positions. The variety of schools in our fixture list and the opportunity for internal matches, allows students the chance to be brave with decision making and sometimes learn from mistakes within the process, and therefore improve as hockey players, team members and people. We encourage a continuation of their enjoyment of sport into lifetime habits, and as such have good links with hockey clubs in our community across the area, which many of our pupils attend. These links are strengthened with 3 of our current coaches who play in the Premier League with Holcombe HC, and are also current internationals.

SWIMMING RGS students have embraced swimming as an integral part of their weekly routines, with a significant number participating in early morning squad training sessions. This unwavering commitment to excellence has played a pivotal role in our swimming program’s continued ascent.

Preparation for the season starts in eThroughout the autumn and spring terms, our U12-U18 boys’ and girls’ teams have consistently demonstrated their prowess, competing in a multitude of events, including regular galas and county-level competitions. With each passing term, the culture of swimming at RGS has flourished, propelled by the relentless dedication of our students and coaches. Our swimming endeavours have translated into remarkable achievements. We consistently secure top-tier finishes in the highly competitive Surrey Schools Relay Championships. Our swimmers also continue to shine on broader stages, with participation in prestigious events such as the Individual County Championships, friendly galas, and the prestigious Independent Schools U18 Bath Cup. Moreover, numerous RGS swimmers have continued to make their mark on the national stage by advancing to the finals of the National Biathlon competition.

Our commitment to swimming extends beyond the competition. Students from the First to Fifth Form continue to enjoy the opportunity to embrace the water as part of their curriculum physical education (PE) lessons. For those in the Fourth to Sixth Form, swimming remains a valued games option, allowing them to refine their skills and passion for the sport. In addition to our curriculum-based swimming, we continue to offer a robust schedule of six extracurricular sessions each week. These sessions not only serve as a platform for refining swimming techniques but also provide opportunities for students to foster their love for the water and maintain their fitness. In conclusion, swimming at RGS stands as a testament to our legacy of ongoing triumph and expansion. Our indoor pool, a symbol of our dedication to the sport, continues to be a hub of excellence and achievement. The dedication of our students and coaches has propelled us to new heights, and our story of success continues to be written with every stroke. As we look forward, we anticipate even greater accomplishments and an everexpanding horizon of opportunities in the world of swimming.

NETBALL Autumn term is the ‘unofficial’ start of the Netball season! Although it is not the Netball term for Saturday fixtures, it is when all our U13 - U19 squads begin their physical and technical preparation for their Cup competitions. Our U13 to U19 squads will have weekly training as well as more focussed ‘performance’ sessions available to them. They have a challenging and competitive start to the term with entry into the following competitions: •

Sisters n Sport - U13, U14, U16 and U19

Independent Schools Netballs Competition (ISNC) - U13, U15, U16 and U19

Last year our U14 girls made it to the quarter final of the Sisters n Sport competition and our U15 girls went one step further to the Semis. We are excited to see how well we do this year building upon last year’s run. On top of this, recreational training sessions are offered to all our netballers irrespective of previous experience. Our U12 netball programme also starts in the Autumn term, with weekly practices and fun, inclusive training, and local, friendly fixtures/festivals for all who wish to play. Teams are selected in this term, and are open to all, for versatility matches and increasing everyone’s opportunity to play being the driving factor ahead of the ‘official’ Netball season in the Spring Term.

FOOTBALL At Reigate Grammar School, our vision for football is to create a dynamic and inclusive environment that fosters both performance and engagement among our students.

We are aiming to develop a robust football program that caters to six teams, including U18 boys, U18 girls, U15 boys, girls, U13 boys, and U13 girls. Our vision encompasses the following: The football program at RGS aims to incorporate a philosophy that emphasises holistic player development, inclusivity, and sportsmanship. We aim to create a positive and supportive atmosphere that encourages and supports our students’ love of the game. We want our players to find joy in every aspect of their football journey, from training sessions to matches, promoting a lifelong passion for the sport. By prioritising enjoyment and fun, we seek to create role models who exemplify the positive and enthusiastic spirit of the game, inspiring their teammates and younger players in the community. The following key principles form the foundation of our football philosophy: Style of Play Our football program aims to be recognised for our distinctive style of play. We strive to embody an organised, fast, and direct approach that requires maximum effort, high levels of fitness, and resilience. Through this style of play, we aim to leave a lasting impression on opponents, officials and spectators, reflecting our commitment to excellence, teamwork, and an unyielding spirit on the field. Holistic Player Development We believe in nurturing the overall growth of our players, both on and off the field. Our program will focus not only on technical and tactical skills but also on physical fitness, mental resilience, and character development. We aim to produce well-rounded individuals who can excel both in football and in life.

Positive Coaching and Mentoring Our coaching staff will adopt a positive and supportive approach, fostering a safe and encouraging environment for our players. Coaches will act as mentors, inspiring and guiding students to reach their full potential, both on and off the pitch. We believe in building strong relationships based on trust, communication, and mutual understanding. Teamwork and Collaboration We emphasise the importance of teamwork, recognising that success in football is achieved through collective effort. Our players will learn the value of collaboration, effective communication, and trust within their teams. They will develop a sense of responsibility towards each other, cultivating a supportive and cohesive team culture.

Sportsmanship and Fair Play We uphold the principles of sportsmanship, fair play, and respect for opponents, officials, and the rules of the game. Our players will be expected to display exemplary behaviour, demonstrating integrity, humility, and grace in victory or defeat. We strive to instil a strong sense of ethical conduct and good sporting values in our football program. Lifelong Passion for Football Our aim is to cultivate a lifelong passion for football among our players. We want them to develop a deep love for the game, embracing its joys, challenges, and lifelong benefits. We will create an environment that fosters a genuine enjoyment of football, encouraging players to continue their involvement in the sport beyond their school years.

Inclusivity and Diversity

By incorporating these principles into our football program, we seek to create a positive, inclusive, and nurturing environment where our players can develop their skills, character, and love for the game.

We value diversity and inclusivity, ensuring that all students have equal opportunities to participate and thrive in our football program. Regardless of gender, skill level, or background, we strive to create an environment that celebrates individual differences, promotes teamwork, and encourages mutual respect among players, coaches, and staff.

By pursuing this vision for football at RGS, we aim to create an environment where our students not only develop their footballing abilities but also cultivate valuable life skills, such as discipline, teamwork, and resilience. We envision a program that brings pride to our school, strengthens community ties, and empowers our students to excel on and off the field.

Our co-curricular programme is extensive. It is not an expectation for students to attend all sessions! Indeed, we emphasise the importance of balance and rest. Students should be doing no more per week than their age in years as hours of participation (11 hours total for an 11-year-old - including all sport, not just school). They should also all have at least one day off completely. If the student is in doubt about what their sport loading should look like they should consult a member of the PE department for advice. Please also note that non-attendance for a good, pre-agreed reason will not affect selection for teams.

COMMUNICATION We encourage face-to-face discussion where possible and ask pupils to find the relevant member of staff in school. If this is not possible a Microsoft Teams message to the appropriate member of staff is preferred. During term time you can find all information regarding the fixture programme and team selection on our sports website www.reigategrammarsport.org and we endeavour to get the information up as early as possible to allow for forward planning as we recognise that weekends and evenings can get very congested. On some platforms, you may be required to sign-in using the password: TeamReigate7. The sports staff look forward to meeting you over the course of the school year, likely at Hartswood where we can confidently say that our hospitality for supporters and players is second to none.

CONTACTS If parents need to get in touch with a member of staff to discuss a matter, we ask that an email be sent directly to the relevant team coach or the head of that specific sport as far in advance as possible. SCHOOL REPRESENTATION AND SATURDAY SPORT

RGS FIXTURES Playing sport for the school and wearing the RGS badge is a huge part of the school’s ethos and a privilege which we hope students both honour and respect. We play fixtures during the week and large block fixtures on Saturdays. On rare occasions there may also be competitions on Sundays. The majority of fixtures will take place in mornings but with travel time included these often take a large part of the day. If selected students are required to attend the fixture and it is our aim to make it one of the highlights of their week. We pledge to select all students who wish to play as often as we can and thus have as many teams per year group as staffing and facility availability allow. Should any student be unavailable for a fixture they must give as much notice as possible, and preferably more than a weeks advanced warning. This request for absence should be directed to the team coach so that he or she can keep a track of who is available to play. Whilst we understand there can be exceptional circumstances, we recognise four key reasons for requesting an absence from a fixture:

15

Regional or National Representation (or equivalent)

Illness or injury

Serious family matter (for example, a wedding or a funeral)

Required attendance at another school event or detention

A GUIDE TO SPORT AUTUMN TERM 2023

FURTHER INFORMATION MATCH DAY All information regarding match days can be found on the sports website. Students are expected to attend match day teas both home and away unless they have informed their coach this is not possible well in advance. Students should also consider the meet time to be the latest time of arrival. As a general rule, students should arrive for home games in playing kit with school tracksuit and an RGS warm weather top over the top, such as the blast fleece of waterproof top. They should also attend match tea in their tracksuit and avoid attending in muddy/wet kit. Sometimes teams travelling away may travel in school uniform, and it is important to check specific details in advance of the match day.

BEHAVIOUR EXPECTATIONS We encourage the highest standards of behaviour from staff, students and supporters, based upon our desire to develop great people through sport. We would like all involved in RGS sport to have only positive interactions with match officials, opposition staff and opposition players and that our conduct in and around the sports field reflect the values we hold dear as both a school and sports department.

MATCH DAY TRANSPORT

Details regarding match day travel will be published alongside the selected teams on the school’s sport website. For away fixtures students should meet their coach at school at the published meet time and they will be returned to school following the fixture. Should parents wish to take their child direct to the fixture or take their student home directly from the venue they must let the team coach know more than 24 hours prior to the fixture.

TEAM SELECTION We would very much like everyone to represent Reigate Grammar School or their House at sport during the next year. There are more than a thousand fixtures across all sports in a normal year at RGS. If your son or daughter is not selected in the first round of fixtures, don’t worry. We hope to involve all those who are keen to play.

SPORTING ACHIEVEMENTS We encourage the highest standards of behaviour from staff, students and We would love to hear about, and celebrate, any sporting achievements your child has had recently. If you do have a story you wish to share, please let your child’s form tutor know and they will pass the information on to the PE department.

Thank you again for your support of sport and physical activity at RGS and for your encouragement to all students to be fully involved in the development of their own health and fitness. We believe it is a truly unique part of school life where the emphasis is so clearly on developing positive life-long habits. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank my colleagues for their time and effort in supporting all of the co-curricular opportunities available at RGS. I look forward to seeing you on the touchlines soon. George Browning Director of Sport

HEALTH & SAFETY First aid trained staff are present at fixtures and on games sessions. Additionally, a medical team or physiotherapists will be present at weekend fixtures. We have a reciprocal relationship with most of the schools we play, where the home team provides trained medical cover for all pupils. We use ‘Return 2 Play’ to support our medical provision focusing on concussion management: www. return2play.org.uk/. Mouthguards are essential for hockey and contact rugby. Shin pads should also be used for all hockey and football training as well as fixtures.
