SPORT AT REIGATE GRAMMAR SCHOOL
Reigate Grammar School is renowned for its sport and prowess on the games field. Our aim is to provide all students with a sports programme that will foster a lifelong involvement in sport.
DIRECTOR OF SPORT
WELCOME
Last year was yet another busy and successful period for students at RGS and we are looking forward to welcoming students back for the autumn term.
We welcome new colleagues to the Department: Mrs Kate Harris as Assistant Director of Sport and Head of Netball and Mr Quentin Hoad as Head of Football. Miss Sophie Pout will take over as Head of Cricket for the year following Mr James Leck’s move to Taunton. We thank James for the eight years of hard work he has put into RGS life, particularly into cricket.
Sport continues to evolve at Reigate Grammar School with an increasing emphasis on our vision to develop Great People Through Sport . We have looked to increase both student and parent voice and now have an active Student Sports Committee which is creating a strategy to support a drive towards increasing the number of senior students playing core sports.
Youtube VISION FOR SPORT
The Sport Parent Feedback Group has met each term over the past year to discus contemporary issues in sport and feedback on RGS sport initiatives. It is a co-created agenda each term. Please get in touch if you are interested in joining the group.
Our vision at Reigate Grammar School is to develop great people through sport, guided by the acronym PEOPLE.

HIGH PERFORMANCE SPORT
Supporting our students to aspire for the best they can be, irrespective of their starting point and with a longterm view of success is fundamental to our vision for sport. As part of this experience, and to supplement the excellent coaching during games and after school sessions, the High-Performance Hub (HPH) provides access to experiences and performance habits that are designed to support and challenge in equal measure.
The High-Performance Hub has continued to be a resource that many of our students use to support their sporting development. This term, the HPH has included lunchtime sessions every Monday exploring topics such as sleep habits, psychological skills, and pupil workload awareness, as well as a nutrition seminar where students applied theory to make their own healthy, energypacked snacks. These varied experiences have prompted conversations and interventions across students and staff, and we look forward to further opportunities through the spring and summer terms. This focus on holistic development and Great People Through Sport has underpinned our approach throughout.
For our senior sports people there have been weekly (or more often) sessions throughout the off-season to enable them
to prepare for the upcoming competitive phases of their respective programmes. These have been well-attended and have allowed coaches to provide an individualised and bespoke programme of development. Similarly, our Athletic Development programme has enabled boys and girls to access sessions before, during, and after school. It has been great to see so many First and Second Form students attending these, laying the foundations for great movement and engagement in sport as they progress through the school.

ENGAGEMENT SPORT
We understand that students join RGS with different sporting experiences, abilities and strengths. Embracing our vision for sports, our promise to Team Reigate is to always offer a diverse
range of sports and activities, making it enjoyable and accessible for everyone.
Engagement at RGS has four main pillars within sport and PE:
Fixtures and Competitions
After School Sports Clubs
We have made significant strides in enhancing student engagement across all year groups. This year, the school has implemented initiatives aimed at increasing participation and providing diverse sporting opportunities. The introduction of additional sports festivals specifically tailored to the First Form, providing younger students with a greater variety of game experiences early in their school journey was one such initiative.
New clubs that meet during lunchtime and after school, catering to a wide range of interests, have been instrumental in boosting overall student participation. One of the standout successes of this expanded programme is the touch rugby group. This mixed team of boys and girls advanced to the national finals at Sixways Stadium, showcasing the high level of skill and dedication among participants.
The judo and taekwondo clubs have seen a notable increase in membership. Judo has become a popular choice for students in the Fourth, Fifth, and Sixth Forms, now being a regular option for games sessions. The rise in numbers for these clubs indicates a growing interest in martial arts, reflecting the school’s success in offering a diverse range of activities that cater to different student preferences.
Looking ahead to the 2024-2025 academic year, we plan to further expand our extracurricular sports programme. Golf will become a more prominent feature with electives available on Tuesdays. This addition aims to attract students who have an interest in golf, providing them with structured opportunities to develop their skills. Other areas we are looking to increase include target sports such as archery and axe throwing.
PE and Games Lessons
PE and Games lessons are the foundational blocks and the cornerstone of our engagement approach, they serve as the entry point for all students to connect with sports at RGS. We have embedded a pupil-driven pathway in PE, allowing students from the Third to Fifth Form to choose their intensity level using a chilli heat scale. This innovation has resulted in increased focus, elevated activity levels, and empowered students to have greater control over their PE experience.
While our games programme follows a traditional model offering team sports to all, our commitment to diversity extends the programme to include individual and contemporary sports. As students progress to the Sixth Form, the programme becomes entirely student-driven, enabling them to select their preferred sport or activity. The Spring 2024 Sixth Form games options include both traditional team sports like hockey, netball, football, and rugby 7s, as well as individual sports such as golf, squash, and mountain biking. We actively collaborate with our students to ensure their preferences are met, proudly incorporating activities like yoga, dance, open fitness sessions, and spin bike classes based on valuable feedback gathered from student voice sessions.
After School Clubs and Fixtures/ Competitions
Our after-school clubs and activities programme continue from where our games programme stops, we now offer over 60 weekly sports clubs where students can further develop their passion in sport and physical activities. We acknowledge that many students want to participate in competitive sport and we encourage all our students to represent RGS in their time here. We arrange fixtures and competitions within our house community as well as with local schools to allow our students to showcase their skills.
Mr Craig Burgess Assistant Director of Sport, Engagement
Following a successful season last year which saw RGS winning a south-east regional event for a second year running, the successes have continued with excellent results throughout the year. In the Surrey Higher Handicap competition, Austin S won the gross event and Chloe A finished runner-up in the girls' category. Katie A has qualified to represent the South of England girls at the national English Schools competition later this year. Before the end of term, we also look forward to the Royal Cinque Ports Schools Invitational, the HG Trophy at the Warwickshire, the Surrey Schools Championship at Clandon Regis and the school golf tour to the Cotswolds, where we will play at the exclusive Burford Golf Club.
The autumn term brings us the three day A&Q Invitational at the Players Club in Bristol, a prestigious national event carrying world ranking points as well as the West Sussex Invitational, which we hope to retain as defending champions. The autumn term also brings us the Smarden Bell which we aim to win back and the National Singles competition at The Berkshire. We will
also participate in the HMC/Swift Foursomes, drawn in the group stage alongside Reeds, Epsom, CLFS, and St George’s. Students will have the opportunity to play some very prestigious courses such as Burrhill, Walton Heath, West Sussex National, and The Berkshire. This sets to be a great end to the golfing season!
Alongside the current programme of Golf which consists of after school coaching on Mondays at Pachesham, Lower School games sessions at Reigate Hill Golf Club with our PGA Professional Molly Moore on Wednesdays and Thursdays for Upper School and Sixth Form, we hope to add an additional session for Third Form during the week, giving students in all year groups the opportunity to play golf year-round. Reigate St Mary’s also benefits from coaching with Molly, with years 3 to 6 having the opportunity to learn golf, which will be a great stepping stone and feeder into RGS golf.
Mr Ben Rutland Head of Golf
FOOTBALL
Football has exploded at RGS in the last few years, experiencing the biggest growth of any sport. We are excited to continue this growth throughout all ages and genders. Football is an RGS core sport and students now have curriculum football options as well as an extensive cocurricular programme that runs throughout the winter and spring terms. Football is available to all and our partnership with South Park Football Club means we have all-weather facilities and floodlights throughout the year to facilitate training, alongside the magnificent football set-up at RGS Hartswood.
Our Performance Football programme runs under the guidance of our Head of Football and UEFA licensed coach, Mr Hoad, alongside Specialist Coach, Mr Ogilvie. Miss Pout, as Head of Girls Football, works closely with Mr Hoad to ensure all students get great opportunities. We are now the training base for Dorking Wanderers 1st XI Men’s team. Their ambitions are high and RGS is proud to be a partner with our local semi-professional club. The partnership leads to shared coaching facilities and staffing, giving us access to some of the best talent around, as well as many other perks.
Alongside the professional coaches and Head of Football, our football teams are supported by the Head of Performance, Mr Emmerson, who runs the performance programme for those athletes hoping to make it into professional academies. We have several boys and girls performing at top academy level, and the school offers mentoring programmes for some of those high-level players hoping to gain a professional contract.
The winter term sees the start of district and regional leagues for girls and boys, from juniors through to seniors. The extensive fixture programmes offer those whose main love is football the opportunity to play for school regularly over the two terms. More than 300 students play football each week in co-curricular clubs or in the curriculum at RGS, and the sport is becoming part of the fabric of sporting life for many students.
Mr Hoad Head of Football
RUGBY
RGS has a proud history as an institution that values sports and physical fitness as part of a well-rounded education. In the autumn term over 15 boys' teams and three girls' teams compete across a range of ages from U12 to U18. Our programme is supported by a team of highly experienced coaches, including four level 3 coaches, ensuring that students receive top-quality training and mentorship.
With the addition of regular touch rugby fixtures for the U12 to U14 age groups, more students will have access to the game. The programme participates in competitions and leagues throughout the year, including the national XV-a-side competition at U14, U15, U16 and U18 levels and numerous 7s festivals including the school's own Reigate U12 and U14 festival and Rosslyn Park National School 7s. We have also taken part in touch rugby festivals over the summer term and have qualified for the national finals in the Touch to Twickenham festival.
With numerous accolades to back up the hard work, RGS has had success at the Rosslyn Park Colts Champions 2015, U18 National Schools Plate Champions 2017, U18 national Plate Regional Runners-up 2023, and U15 national Plate quarter-finalists 2023 in recent years, earning the school nationwide recognition for the rugby programme. The girls' programme continues to thrive, with all three teams (U14, U16, and U18) qualifying for the knock-out stages at the Rosslyn Park National School 7s.
The number of students invited to train with the Harlequins DPP programme continues to grow, with five students included at the
U14 age group. The school prioritises athletes' development with a focus on the reward process, not just the outcome. Strength and conditioning sessions are available for all students with specialist plans offered to those that need them.`
The Rugby programme is accessible to all students who are interested in getting involved in the sport with fixtures every Saturday between September and December with like-minded schools, where athletes can focus on enjoying the experience while maintaining sportsmanship and teamwork with opponents. National cup fixtures take place post-Christmas, and the 7s season starts in late February.
RGS is committed to providing student-athletes with exciting opportunities to develop both on and off the field. The focus of our rugby programme is on enjoyment and providing opportunities for students to engage in a form of the game they enjoy. The growth of touch and semi-contact games will continue to develop, allowing more students to have competitive opportunities to play. The rugby programme at the school is a prime example of excellence in sports development, and prospective students and parents interested in learning more should not hesitate to get in touch with the school.
Mr Doug Cooper Head of Rugby Envelope
NETBALL
The autumn term marks the exciting beginning of our netball season. While it is not the official term for Saturday fixtures, this period is crucial for our U13 to U19 squads as they embark on their physical and technical preparation for the upcoming cup competitions.
Our players have weekly opportunities to participate in a range of sessions, including those specifically designed for competitive cup fixtures. This term, our squads face a challenging and competitive start with entries into the Sisters in Sport knock-out and/or Surrey and National qualifying competitions.
Reflecting on the successful cup runs of the 2023-2024 season, we recognise the significant benefits these competitions bring to our athletes. We are eager to build on last year's achievements and look forward to another successful season. Additionally, we offer recreational training sessions open to all netballers, regardless of their previous experience, ensuring everyone has the chance to enjoy and improve their skills.
For our U12 players, the autumn term introduces them to the world of netball at RGS with weekly practices focused on fun, inclusive training. They will also have the opportunity to participate in local friendly fixtures and festivals, fostering a love for the game from an early age.
We are thrilled to start this term with a blend of competitive and recreational netball, ensuring all our players have the opportunity to grow, compete, and enjoy the sport.
Mrs Kate Harris Head of Netball Envelope
HOCKEY
After a summer of courses, camps, county or talent academy performance trials, autumn hockey is highly anticipated.
The school’s preparation for the season starts in earnest in late August with many of our students going on a pre-season tour. This provides an opportunity to experience hockey in greater depth, playing against different styles in Holland and soaking up the culture of this great hockey nation - there is no better place to put our hockey to the test. Seniors get the chance to experience life as performance athletes at a pre-season camp hosted by one of the big hockey universities. Once they return, there is a full programme of pre-season training prior to the start of term. With the start of term comes National cup competitions. RGS enters both England Hockey and the Independent Schools Cup, giving us the opportunity to test ourselves against the best schools in the country. In the last few years, we have enjoyed a high level of success from our pinnacle of being consecutive national champions with U13 girls two years running to regularly finishing in the last eight of the competition in the more senior age groups. In the 2023-2024 season, we were the only school in the country to have all three of our girls' teams and two of our boys' age groups at national Plate Finals Day, with our U19 boys finishing runners-up and our U13 boys as national Champions.
Every student has access to games session hockey as well as afterschool practice. This allows students to work on individual skills as well as team ethos and development in preparation for midweek and Saturday fixtures. In the senior age groups, there are A-C
teams and in the junior years there are A-E teams meaning there is a full programme in place for all abilities and experience. Junior boys get a chance to start preseason training in October in preparation for their spring term of fixtures.
Indoor hockey is an expanding programme at RGS with early morning sessions available where students can learn the finer points of the indoor game in preparation for entering a national competition or just use it as an opportunity to practice their outdoor skills in the off-season.
At RGS we feel it is important to find the right level of challenge in all matches and students are encouraged to play in a range of positions. The variety of schools in our fixture list and the opportunity for internal matches allows students the chance to be brave with decision making and sometimes learn from mistakes within the process and therefore improve as hockey players, team members, and people.
We encourage a continuation of their enjoyment of sport into lifetime habits and as such have good links with hockey clubs in our community which many of our students attend. These links are strengthened with four of current coaches playing in the Premier League with Holcombe C and are also international players.
Mrs Rebecca Wickham Mr Rob Field Head of Hockey Head of Hockey Development Envelope Envelope
SWIMMING
RGS students embrace swimming as an integral part of their weekly routines, with a significant number participating in early morning and after school squad training sessions. This unwavering commitment to excellence has played a pivotal role in our swimming programme’s continued ascent.
We offer a robust schedule of six open extracurricular sessions each week. These sessions not only serve as a platform for refining swimming techniques but also provide opportunities for students to foster their love for the water and maintain their fitness.
We consistently secure top-tier finishes in the highly competitive Surrey Schools Relay Championships. Our swimmers also continue to shine on broader stages, participating in prestigious events such as the Individual County Championships, friendly
galas, and the prestigious Independent Schools U18 Bath Cup. Moreover, numerous RGS swimmers have continued to make their mark on the national stage by advancing to the finals of the National Biathlon competition, and we regularly qualify for the national finals held at the London Olympic Pool.
Our commitment to swimming extends beyond competition. Students from the First to Fifth Forms continue to enjoy the opportunity to swim as part of their curriculum physical education (PE) lessons. For those in the Fourth to Sixth Forms, swimming remains a valued games option, allowing them to refine their skills and passion for the sport.
Miss Strudwick Head of Swimming Envelope
CORE SPORTS
Our Co-Curricular programme is extensive. It is not an expectation for students to attend all sessions! Indeed, we emphasise the importance of balance and rest. Students should be doing no more per week than their age in years as hours of participation (11 hours total for an 11-year-old - including all sport, not just school). They should also all have at least one day off completely. If the student is in doubt about what their sport loading should look like they should consult a member of the PE department for advice. Please also note that non-attendance for a good, pre-agreed reason will not affect selection for teams.

CURRICULUM GAMES
GAMES
Games sessions are on weekday afternoons during Periods 6 and 7. The sports played during the winter term are highlighted below. It is important to note that if you wish to play a different sport you can do so during our extensive extracurricular programme. In curriculum games time, we ensure that the students experience a range of sports, with more choice evolving as the students get older and begin to select their preferred sports.
HIGH PERFORMANCE HUB
The High-Performance Hub (HPH) is a programme of talks, seminars, workshops and events that aim to engage students, inspire them and support their learning and performance.
“High Performance is simply being the best you can be.”
The hub will focus on developing an awareness of skills in specific areas that link to High Performance. These will all be designed to support our key aims as a department. For us, sport is the vehicle we use to help develop great PEOPLE.
How does the High-Performance Hub link to the Scholarship programme?
The High-Performance Hub (HPH) is fully inclusive and is open to all. The Hub supports anyone to achieve their potential, including Sport Scholars.
The Sport Scholarship programme is designed to support students who have been identified as having high sporting potential. These students are likely to attend many of the events and activities in the Hub. However, being a scholar includes a more managed process where students will be mentored and supported on an individual basis to meet their sporting targets. It would be an expectation of scholars to attend certain HPH activities and events.
High Performance Hub talks currently take place each Monday at 1.30pm in HC11- full list of topics is listed on the Sports Scholars Team.
What kind of events would the Hub feature?
We hope to use the Hub to develop: personal skills, such as reflection, organisation and time planning; psychological skills, such as grit and resilience, stress management techniques and visualisation; physical and health, such as, athletic development, strength and conditioning and the importance of sleep and recovery, and many more.
Can parents be involved?
Yes! We would like to invite parents to some of our talks and activities. These may be at school or on a digital platform like Microsoft Teams. You will be specifically invited to join your son or daughter for special events and so there is no need to contact school about these prior to the invitation.
How can I help?
If you know anyone who may be interested in speaking to our Reigatian community, please do pass on my details. We would be very pleased to hear from anyone who can offer an insight into any aspects of a High-Performance life. For more information, please contact Mr Browning at gjb@reigategrammar.org.
RGS FIXTURES
Playing sport for the school and wearing the RGS badge is a huge part of the school’s ethos and a privilege which we hope students both honour and respect. We play fixtures during the week and large block fixtures on Saturdays. On rare occasions, there may also be competitions on Sundays. The majority of fixtures will take place in the mornings, but with travel time included, these often take a large part of the day. If selected, students are required to attend the fixture, and it is our aim to make it one of the highlights of their week. We pledge to select all students who wish to play as often as we can and thus have as many teams per year group as staffing and facility availability allow. Should any student be unavailable for a fixture, they must give as much notice as possible, preferably more than a week in advance. This request for absence should be directed to the team coach so that they can keep track of who is available to play. Whilst we understand there can be exceptional circumstances, we recognise four key reasons for requesting an absence from a fixture:
1. Regional or national representation (or equivalent)
2. Illness or injury
3. Serious family matter (for example a wedding or a funeral)
4. Required attendance at another school event or detention.
Match days
Information regarding match days can be found on the sports website . Students are expected to attend match day teas both home and away unless they have informed their coach this is not possible well in advance. Students should also consider the meet time to be the latest time of arrival. As a general rule, students should arrive for home games in playing kit with school tracksuit and hooded sweatshirt over the top. They should also attend match tea in their tracksuit and avoid attending in muddy/wet kit. Often when travelling away, we will travel in school uniform, but again it is important to check the fixture details well in advance. We warmly welcome visitors to school fixtures; in fact, we believe it enhances the experience of the students. Please support the students, helping us to set a great example for them to follow.
Behavioural Expectations
We encourage the highest standards of behaviour from staff, students, and supporters based on our desire to develop great people through sport. We would like all involved in RGS sport to have only positive interactions with match officials, opposition staff, and opposition players, and that our conduct in and around the sports field reflects the values we hold dear as both a school and sports department.
Health and Safety
First aid trained staff are present at fixtures and on games sessions. Additionally, a medical team or physiotherapists will be present at weekend fixtures. We have a reciprocal relationship with most of the schools we play, where the home team provides trained medical cover for all. We use Return 2 Play to support our medical provision focusing on concussion management.
Mouthguards are essential for hockey and contact rugby. Shin pads should also be used for all hockey and football training as well as fixtures.
Sporting Achievements
We would love to hear about and celebrate, any sporting achievements your child has had recently. If you do have a story you wish to share, please let your child’s form tutor know and they will pass the information on to the PE department.
FURTHER INFORMATION
COMMUNICATING WITH PE AND SPORT STAFF
We encourage face-to-face discussions where possible and ask students to find the relevant member of staff in school. If this is not possible, a Microsoft Teams message to the appropriate member of staff is preferred. During term time, you can find all information regarding the fixture programme and team selection on our sports website and we endeavour to get the information up as early as possible to allow for forward planning, recognising that weekends and evenings can get very congested. On some platforms, you may be required to sign in using the password: TeamReigate7.
If parents need to get in touch with a member of staff to discuss a matter, we ask that an email be sent directly to the relevant team coach or the head of that specific sport as far in advance as possible. For unforeseen events such as illness, an email to the head of sport is greatly appreciated.
CONTACTS
If parents need to get in touch with a member of staff to discuss a matter, we ask that an email be sent directly to the relevant team coach or the head of that specific sport as far in advance as possible. • From any team's fixture list, you can ‘spy’ on the opponent's recent results by clicking on the spyglass button, or see the playing record, or find their location by clicking on the map point button.
• From any team’s fixtures and results listings, you can download the entire fixture list to your personal calendar on your PC or mobile device. Any changes we make to our fixtures will be synchronised with your personal calendar whenever you connect your PC or mobile device to the Internet.
• If you need to quickly find an away venue for one of our opponents you can either choose the map link directly from a fixture, available via the ‘details’ button as described above, or you can select ‘Opponent Maps & Links’ from the main menu.
• If you are visiting our sports website on your mobile phone you will notice it loads up as a mobile web app. Full instructions for how to get the most out of the web app can be found online via SOCS Help. The mobile web app will allow you to access fixture and team sheet information on the go!
Thank you again for your support of sport and physical activity at RGS and for your encouragement to all students to be fully involved in the development of their own health and fitness. We believe it is a truly unique part of school life where the emphasis is so clearly on developing positive life-long habits.
I would also like to take this opportunity to thank my colleagues for their time and effort in supporting the co-curricular opportunities available at RGS. In addition to 80 weekly clubs, Sport staff led sports tours to Spain, France, Somerset, and Jersey last year.
I look forward to seeing you on the touchlines soon.
