OUR HISTORY
Reigate Grammar School Vietnam (RGS Vietnam), formerly known as The International School of Vietnam (ISV), began its educational journey with only a handful of students in the year 2013. The not-for-profit project of RGS Vietnam was first planned in 2007, approved by the city’s authorities in 2009 and started building in 2010. In 2013-2014, the first academic year was opened, welcoming 65 students from Pre-K to Grade 5. On 15th September, 2021, the school signed an international collaboration agreement with Reigate Grammar School in the UK and was officially renamed from The International School of Vietnam to Reigate Grammar School Vietnam, becoming the first school in Vietnam to be linked n with a UK independent school.
With the untiring efforts of our staff, constant support of parents, and the passionate performance of our students, the small beginning continues to grow and have had the opportunity to touch the pinnacles of success. Today RGS Vietnam is a noted academic powerhouse of our city, Hanoi, with over 450 students from 30 nationalities. It’s high standards are providing our community with a solid education, as we continue to strive to be a quality IB World school, living up to our school motto: "Every child is a master of their own destiny”, and ethos: “We believe that every Reigatian is on a life-long journey of noble purpose. We will empower each one of them to fulfill their unique potential through a happy, healthy and high-achieving life.”

THE STORY OF OUR FOUNDER

Ms. Mai Bich Thuy, the founder of The International School of Vietnam (now Reigate Grammar School Vietnam), found and chose the land of the school site in 2008. She then embarked upon a strenuous journey with stern resilience, perseverance, and professionalism to lead the school to achieve from one success to another. Ms. Thuy was born in Hanoi in 1971 and grew up during the hardest post-war time in Vietnam as the country suffered from shortage of food and essential goods. However, her family managed to give her the best education possible and she went to the best school in town. Ms. Thuy was well aware that her friends and many other children were not as lucky and could not afford schooling. This realisation nurtured her dream to become a teacher, which grew profoundly as the years passed. Thanks to hard work and innate talent, Ms. Thuy went all the way from high school to Hanoi Foreign Trade University and graduated magna cum laude in 1993 and was retained by the university as a lecturer - a rare honour accorded to undergraduates. Thanks to her experience at Hanoi Foreign Trade University, Ms. Thuy came to realise the importance of creating a great education and educational environment and became more ambitious in having her own system rather than being part of an existing system. Over the many years since 1993, Ms. Thuy’s passion for education led her to conduct several educational projects in Vietnam that now have connections to the UK educational platform. Ms. Thuy decided to start her international school project The International School of Vietnam in 2007 after her feasibility study was approved by the Hanoi Municipal Authority and the Ministry of Education and Training. It took two years for other paperwork, fundraising, selection of school site, purchase of land, school design and the actual construction of the school. Ms. Thuy’s unlimited source of strength and perseverance kept her on the right track in the face of numerous difficulties, challenges and even obstacles. Between 2010 to 2012, the design and construction of ISV gradually evolved to meet International Baccalaureate standards. The site soon became acknowledged by environmentalists and social activists to meet “green” standards and promote sustainable goals. Ms. Thuy’s dream-turned plan to establish an international school, open to both local and international students thus materialised.
ISV officially opened its doors in the 2013-2014 academic year with only a handful of students; as a candidate IB-PYP School. In the following few years, under the constant leadership of the Founder and the Board of Management, the school successfully attained accreditation from Cambridge Assessment International Education (CAIE). And, as planned, RGS Vietnam was fully authorised to be an International Baccalaureate (IBO) PYP school in early 2016. As the students’ numbers increased, ISV achieved IB Diploma Programme status in 2018. Student diversity grew, and the school witnessed an intake of a broad range of nationalities. This opportunity enabled the school to develop its international-mindedness and policy structures with its community in mind. In addition to ISV, and over the same time period, Ms. Thuy developed the dual programme of Cambridge A-Level and Vietnam national high school programme, initially executed in Chu Van An High School, Hanoi. From 2016 to 2019, RGS Vietnam assisted Hanoi DOET in organising the first two classes. In 2019, the students graduated with outstanding results and were offered tertiary opportunities from prestigious universities in Vietnam and worldwide. As ISV’s reputation was growing, Ms. Mai Bich Thuy took one further step of making it internationally recognised by entering a collaboration agreement with Reigate Grammar School (UK) - one of the top 5 fully co-educational K-12 independent schools in the United Kingdom. Following this agreement, The International School of Vietnam was renamed as Reigate Grammar School Vietnam. Ms. Mai Bich Thuy has gone a long way from a dreamer to a practitioner, from entrepreneur to educator (edupreneur). She has taken great care of and created great opportunities for children of thousands of families, Vietnamese and international. RGS Vietnam’s journey all began with the founder’s great vision for outstanding education in Vietnam. She has been and will be devoting her intellect, energy, and enthusiasm for education to RGS Vietnam’s new plans and projects, all for one goal – to contribute to the development of the young generation. It is also her way of life - to pay back what she has been endowed with. But she pays back generously.

CURRICULUM For a full list of the subjects on offer, please refer to the curriculum plan for the current year, which is available via our website: www.reigategrammar.edu.vn We believe in our young people so that they can achieve more than they ever thought possible and our innovative, distinctive curriculum enables a greater breadth of study and the skills for lifelong learning. It is designed to develop personal character, a moral compass and to prepare RGS Vietnam students extraordinarily well for a happy and successful personal and professional adult life. The Prep School Curriculum The IB-PYP curriculum is a student-centred approach to education for children aged 3-12. The framework begins with the premise that students are agents of their own learning and partners in the learning process. It prioritises people and their relationships to build a strong learning community. PYP students use their initiative to take responsibility and ownership of their learning. By learning through inquiry and reflecting on their own learning, PYP students develop knowledge, conceptual understandings, skills and the attributes of the IB learner profile to make a difference in their own lives, their communities and beyond. The framework emphasises the central principle of agency, which underpins the three pillars of school life: the learner, learning and teaching and the learning community. The PYP is designed to focus on the development of the whole child as an inquirer, both in the classroom and in the world outside. It is a framework guided by six transdisciplinary themes of global significance, explored using knowledge and skills derived from six subject areas, as well as approaches to learning (ATL) skills. The PYP framework is flexible enough to accommodate the demands of most national or local curriculums and provides the best preparation for students to engage in our Secondary School programmes The Secondary School Curriculum The Lower Secondary Programme was designed for students from Year 7 to Year 9 at Reigate Grammar School Vietnam. Through exposure to a broad range of subject areas, the RGS Vietnam Lower Secondary Programme builds on the foundations set in our Preparatory School education in developing students’ concepts, content, experiences and abilities. The programme develops the skills of research, analysis, evaluation, reflection, collaboration and communication. It strengthens the links and common understanding across subject areas. By learning the Lower Secondary, students can access a broad balanced education, helping them to thrive throughout their schooling, work and life. They are also prepared thoroughly for the next academic years at RGS Vietnam. Various subjects are offered for students through the Lower Secondary Programme, such as English, Maths, Humanities, Languages, Science, Arts and more.
International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) The IGCSE is a two-year programme leading to externally set, marked and certificated examinations from the University of Cambridge. The programme is offered to Year 10 and Year 11 students at RGS Vietnam. Cambridge IGCSE (part of Cambridge Secondary 2) is the world’s most popular international qualification for 14 to 16 year olds. Developed over 25 years ago, it is tried, tested and trusted by schools worldwide. IGCSE is usually accepted as an entrance standard to many schools offering A- levels, IB Diploma Programmes (DP) or Advanced Placement (AP). It is recognised by leading universities and employers worldwide and is an international passport to progression and success. IB Diploma Programme IBDP is a very popular international qualification for 16 to 17-year-old students. It is recognized by leading universities and employers worldwide, and is an international passport to progression and success. At RGS Vietnam, Year 12 and Year 13 students study the IB Diploma Programme to prepare for their university studies. The IB Diploma Programme (DP) is an academically challenging and balanced programme of education with final examinations that prepares students, aged 16 to 19, for success at university and life beyond. It has been designed to address the intellectual, social, emotional and physical well-being of students. The programme has gained recognition and respect from the world’s leading universities. A-level Programme A-levels (Advanced Levels) are regarded as the most prestigious academic pre-university qualifications in the UK and internationally. 95% of undergraduates at Oxford and Cambridge followed A-level courses. With the IB Diploma, A-levels are the ticket to access world class universities, including the top universities in Vietnam.. With the aim of offering students access to a bespoke individualised curriculum, RGS Vietnam has now introduced a new A-level programme for students aged 15 to 18 (Years 11-13 equivalent). This gives RGS Vietnam students the ability to choose either the A-levels or the IB Diploma programme after they complete their IGCSEs in Year 11, this is a choice available exclusively at RGS Vietnam. A-level is the UK’s national curriculum school-leaving qualifications that are taken by most students in the UK. Students usually choose three or four subjects, and take two years to study for these A-levels between the ages of 16 and 18. Pass grades are A* (the top grade), followed by A, B, C, D and E. One similarity between the IB Diploma and A Levels is that both qualifications are assessed by exams at the end of a two or three-year study period. 8

ENTRANCE PROCEDURE 3+ ENTRANCE PROCEDURE FOR CANDIDATES IN PREPARATORY SCHOOL
11+ ENTRANCE PROCEDURE FOR CANDIDATES IN SECONDARY SCHOOL
Application All 3+ applications to the Preparatory school are approved by the Headmaster and Director of Admissions. Once an application has been made, the Admissions Department will write to you to confirm the details of the entrance exam.
Application All applications to Year 7 through to Year 12 are approved by the Headmaster and Director of Admissions. All students entering into the Secondary School must have sufficient English language skills in order to be accepted into the programme. Once an application has been made, the Admissions Department will write to you to confirm the details of the entrance exam. Note for IB Diploma Admissions: As the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) is a rigorous and challenging pre-university course for highly-motivated students, which is normally taken over 2-years from Year 12, applicants will not be admitted to the Year 13 programme.
Sit in (Pre-K to Year 1) The youngest learners (from Pre-K to Y1) enter into classes within the Early Years Learning Centre on the basis of age. During the application stage, a mutually agreed arrangement for prospective students of these ages to spend 45-minutes to an hour in their grade level class will be made with parents. This arrangement is called a ‘sit in’. During this time, the student will be able to become familiar with his/her future peers and begin to make friends and learn some classroom procedures. Entrance Assessment (Year 2-6) After reviewing the student’s information and academic profile, RGS Vietnam will require all applications from Year 2 to Year 6 to sit an entrance assessment. The assessment will cover both numeracy and language evaluation components and will be conducted by a member of the RGS Vietnam academics team. The aim of the assessment is to determine the ability of the child to access the PYP curriculum at their grade level, which will last approximately 60-minutes. This assessment will not impinge an entry unless the school cannot meet the educational needs of the student.
EAL
RGS Vietnam offers support in ‘English as an Additional Language’ (EAL) in Preparatory School. On admission, students identified as in need of additional support will be tracked weekly by the EAL teacher and the classroom teacher, followed by a termly evaluation meeting to assess level of student progress and to determine ifless, additional, or the same amount of support is needed for the coming term.
11
Entrance Exams All applicants from Year 7 to Year 12 must complete the Stage 1 test (an online English Literacy, Quantitative Reasoning & Non-verbal Reasoning test) before proceeding to the Stage 2 tests (written tests in English, home language for some students, Mathematics, and Science for Year 10 and above). Talent scholarship students will have additional assessments. Applicants to Year 12 (IB DP) may be required to sit additional assessments based on their subject choices. The entrance exam day will take place based on the student’s schedule. The exam can be taken online or on-campus, depending on the current circumstances or on the student’s situation. Qualified applicants who have passed the assessments will be interviewed by the Head of Secondary.

ASSISTED PLACES Reigate Grammar School Vietnam, formerly known as The International School of Vietnam (ISV), was founded in the year 2013. During its 9 years of development with various successful milestones in the school’s growth, what has made us a good choice of school for many of our families, lies in providing a high quality of education, whilst being one of the most affordable international schools in Hanoi. When the first Reigate Grammar School was founded, in 1675, it was the generosity of Henry Smith, who donated £150 towards the purchase of land for a “Free School”, which began a legacy of philanthropic education that has gone on to benefit many Reigatians. RGS has a long history of, and a clear commitment to, providing access to the very best educational facilities and opportunities for as many children as possible, no matter what their financial or social background may be. Through the school’s Assisted Place system, RGS Vietnam offers the children of Hanoi access to the very best education. Our moral commitment is to ensure that, if a child has the ability and the determination to succeed, RGS Vietnam will support parents in ensuring that they have access to the best education.
Each child's Assisted Place application will be assessed on a case by case basis. All Assisted Place awards will be means tested and we will therefore take into account each family's financial need. As a result of this, we will be able to offer an accurate and appropriate amount of financial assistance, which will be based on each child's unique circumstance, thereby supporting more meritorious students coming from all backgrounds of society to join our community. Assisted Places are only available to those who are successful in our entrance examination and assistance is not guaranteed if a place is offered. We attempt to help as many families as possible, but funds are limited: will therefore be based on the child’s performance in the entrance examination and assessment of need awards required. The level of fee remission will be determined on a sliding scale which may offer up to 100 per cent reduction in fees. Assistance towards the cost of school uniform, school meals and travel may also be available in cases of particular need.
In order to achieve this, and to support our families financially, our new means tested Assisted Place system is now available for all parents who wish to apply. RSG Vietnam Assisted Places are intended to enable gifted children to attend the school irrespective of their family’s income. Our Assisted Places provide significant financial support and open the door for many deserving children to gain access to a Reigate Grammar School international education.

ASSISTED PLACES Parents’ income and assets will be assessed annually and all information will be treated in the strictest confidence. The exact amount of fee reduction will depend upon each family's circumstances. Parents are encouraged to contact the school’s Admissions Office to discuss their individual circumstances, in complete confidence. Proof of income will be required. For the higher levels of fee remission, the school reserves the right to visit parents at home or make other relevant enquiries to establish genuine levels of income.A pupil may hold both a scholarship and an Assisted Place but the total reduction cannot be more than 100 percent of fees. The following steps should be followed when applying for an RGS Vietnam Assisted Place: When applying to RGS Vietnam, please indicate on the application form whether you would like to apply for an Assisted Place. All Assisted Place applicants must complete the financial assistance application form & submit relevant supporting documentation required in the application checklist in full. These documents will be made available via our online admissions portal, asking for details of your income, assets held (for example, a house), and outgoings (on mortgage, living expenses, dependent children or other relatives).
It is important that all financial assistance application forms are returned by the deadline outlined in the key dates, and applications must be made prior to the applicant’s entrance assessment date. If this is not the case, an Assisted Place application will not be able to be considered. Parents are encouraged to contact the Admissions Department to discuss their individual circumstances, in complete confidence. For the higher levels of fee remission, the school reserves the right to visit parents at home or make other relevant enquiries to establish genuine levels of income. After exams, the results of students' academic performance and financial assistance application will be taken into account to determine the total level of fee remission. The decisions made by the RGS Vietnam are final and they reserve the right to reject any applications without the need to explain the reasons for their decisions. For further instructions, please do not hesitate to contact our Admissions Department at: admissions@reigategrammar.edu.vn
SCHOLARSHIPS Scholarships are awarded for academic excellence and for outstanding ability and potential in music, sport and arts. Scholarships recognise those students with exceptional ability or potential in a specific area and seek to nurture this throughout their time at the school by delivering a programme of enrichment and mentoring. Some scholarship awards include fee remission where values may be a percentage or a fixed amount per annum. Scholarships can be held alongside Assisted Places where candidates qualify for additional fee support.
13
RGS Vietnam scholarships are a recognition of truly outstanding students, in either academic or other extra curricular activities, such as sport, music or art. The recognition may come with small monetary awards and/or additional support in the way of school merchandise, fees for school trips and placements for student exchanges programmes. For both normal entry and scholarship applications, we welcome students of all nationalities and backgrounds, as long as they are successful in our entrance examination, in accordance with RGS Vietnam's moral aims of equal opportunity.

STUDENT SERVICES Health service One of the core aims at RGS Vietnam is to provide a caring environment for all our students. RGS Vietnam features a Health Centre staffed by fully qualified nurses and in cooperation with the International SOS. With over a hundred offices in 90 countries, the International SOS is a trustworthy and reputable health and security services firm to guarantee your child’s wellbeing. Our Health Centre mission is to: Provide prompt and effective first aid in a caring environment Inform a student’s teacher if he or she is judged to be unfit to continue in class as well as contact the parent if the student needs to be taken home or see a medical practitioner Maintain student health records and details of all accidents Raise awareness of the importance of hygiene and health management In the event of a serious emergency, the nurse can be summoned to attend to a sick or injured child in any area of the school. The School strongly requests that students with temperatures above 37.2 Celsius or who are unwell should not be sent to school. Those found to be ill will be sent to the Health Centre and the nurse will contact a parent asking them to collect their child as soon as possible.
Bus service RGS Vietnam has a contracted, third-party operator to provide daily pick-up and drop-off transportation services on behalf of the school. Each bus is equipped with seat belts and has a Bus Monitor to supervise students along the bus, with a mobile phone for emergencies. Exact timings and locations for pick-up and dropoff are determined on a needs basis, after receiving indications of interest for the service from parents. Changes to the bus schedule are made occasionally to allow as many students as possible to access this service. Pick-up and drop off points will be in safe, central locations close to the place of residence. Lunch service RGS Vietnam’s spacious and light dining hall serves healthy, nutritious and delicious meals. The food service is catered by RGS Vietnam personnel working from our large commercial kitchen, located on campus. The kitchen is designed and operated to international food preparation standards. Our Menu is tailored to reflect the tastes of our international diners, with culinary influences from around the globe. With our large modern facilities, our kitchen team creates continental and Asian dishes focused around fresh seasonal ingredients, delivered daily. A normal weekly menu would include: Salads Juices Fresh Fruit Asian and Western Dishes Alongside the quality of academic learning, the quality of meals available for students is also very important to us, as they are both connected. All ingredients are selected carefully by our chef, who ensures 3 criteria are met to create: fresh, organic and delicious meals. Along with the careful consideration of the foods’ nutritional content , food presentation is also a focus for the professional kitchen staff. RGS Vietnam usually changes foods to suit the tastes of different students, as well as to help them improve their knowledge about the diversity of world cuisines. Most of all, RGS Vietnam ensures that the meals are delicious, safe, and healthy for all students.
