In the rapidly-changing, dynamic landscape of the 21st-century, our students need to be equipped with an array of transferable skills to allow them tackle the unexpected and the unknown with equal confidence. In that light, embedding our bespoke Learning Habits throughout the School remains a focus. Every facet of school life – curricular and co-curricular alike – test, stretch and develop our students’ organisation, engagement, imagination, perseverance, aspiration and reflection.

Whether this is in the classroom or on the sports pitches at Bradstone Brook or in a multitude of other locations and scenarios, this term’s The Register provides an insight into the rich diversity of opportunities afforded to our students – rarely seen without a broad smile on their faces!

Our 20-acre Sports Ground Bradstone Brook continued to provide the inspiring setting for high-level competition.

Upper Sixth Form students have already secured over 500 university offers, on an inspiring and diverse range of courses, with 95% coming from Russell Group or a Times Top 20 institution.

Enrichment outside the classroom included World Book Week, Science Week & the Scholarship Conference to name but a few!

Musician of the Year was, as always, one of the highlights of the musical calendar as our talented musicians competed for The Steynor Prize.

Opportunities for public performance continued with concerts in intimate local venues as well as the inspiring setting of Clare College, Cambridge, with the Chamber Choir.

A thrilling evening of musicianship as the 350-strong choir and orchestra, comprising students, parents and staff, performed both Rutter’s and Mozart’s Requiem at G Live.

The Art Department nurtures creativity through an exciting range of media with Ceramics Club as popular ever, whether it is pottery influenced by the classical period or modern creations!

This year’s Smoothey Competition which unashamedly celebrates flamboyance, individuality and originality had as its theme Festival, leading to some memorable submissions.

The Lent Term traditionally provides four seasons in one term, and this year was certainly no different!

The innovative examined pieces showcased a range of genres and styles – from classic to period, from war to modern – from a committed, talented cohort of drama students.

The joint RGS and Guildford High School production of The Odyssey was a tale of adventure, resilience, hope, love, and certainly lashings of fun. Truly epic!

This term’s prestigious King’s Lecture saw us welcoming Richard Burrell, producer of a range of popular shows, including a live re-enactment of a scene from All Creatures Great & Small.

The smiling faces of the RGS always ready to welcome visitors through our doors!

The full and varied co-curricular life of the School provided stimulating and challenging opportunities outside the classroom.

Our wonderful caterers provided themed meals as well as regular tasting tables including the kale experience: kale chips, kale pesto, kale chocolate cake, and kale smoothies!

Over 20 hockey teams of all age groups regularly competed with notable success on the local and national stages.

16 of the strongest and most traditional rugby-playing schools in the south-east of England met at an immaculate Bradstone Brook for our Under 16 Sevens Tournament.

The growing reputation of RGS football was cemented with one of the most successful seasons in recent history as much for the results as for the distinctive, fluent style of football.

Boys threw themselves into a range of sports, catering to every interest and passion, as they embraced Sport for All at the RGS.

Charity and volunteering opportunities abounded, including The Great RGS Bake-Off with a theme of The Beautiful Game, as over £12,500 was raised for our school-nominated charities.

We officially welcomed RGSG Muscat to our family of schools and look forward to working closely together.

Collaboration continues to develop between our schools with students and staff from RGSG Dubai and RGSG Nanjing enjoying a visit to the RGS.

Old Guildfordians continued to maintain strong connections with each other and with the School, as we hosted our first undergraduate event in Durham and welcomed back Commonwealth Gold winner Chris Murray.

The RGS bid farewell to staff including Head of Hockey Mr Mullon and Deputy Head Mr Williams: we wish them all the very best.

Just one day of snow brought plenty of fun for the students as well as a new visitor to the Old Building.

Thank you to every single individual – boys and parents, staff and governors, and the wider community alike – who have contributed so much to this Lent Term, as flexibility, kindness and compassion remained very much at the heart of our ethos. It was yet another illustration of the fact that far from rhetoric, #RGSTogether is a reality, even for those who may not stick around with us for long!
