SEASON PREVIEW The Bulldog men’s hockey team will be looking to take one more final step in 2011-12. A year ago, Adrian College was just one win away from the NCAA Division III National Championship as they fell 4-3 in the championship game to St. Norbert College in an All-West Region final in Minneapolis. This year, the team will have several questions entering the season. The biggest question is how do you replace a senior class that went 102-12-2 over a four-year period and rewrote all sorts of record books in the process. “I know you can’t replace our senior class and the foundation that was laid,” said fifth-year head coach Ron Fogarty. “This year’s team has a big advantage over the guys four years ago in that our program is now established as a winner. We have a talented group of players coming back and those guys will be able to transition the newcomers. I’ve been asked about this year’s team and honestly we will not know what we have until game one. I feel like the talent is still good and the rest will come with game experience.” The Bulldogs certainly realize that teams will be gunning for them with the idea that they are vulnerable after losing seven of the top 10 scorers from a year ago. But keep in mind that the cupboard is far from being bare. Junior Zach Graham (Palmerston, Ont.) was a dependable player and scorer in 2010-11. Graham was one of eight guys to play in all 30 games and ranked third on the team with 36 points. He scored 15 goals and added 21 assists while sporting one of the top shooting percentages (.214). Graham had eight power-play goals and three game-winning goals. In addition, he recorded a goal and assist in the NCAA Tournament run. Senior Jordan Watts (Oakville, Ont.) made a significant impact in his first year with the team in 2010-11. Watts ranked sixth on the team in scoring with 23 points contributing 11 goals and 12 assists in 27 games. Watts recorded a hat trick in his first game with the Bulldogs against Marian University and also had a two-goal night at Buffalo State. Sophomore Josh Cousineau (Penetang, Ont.) played in 22 games as a freshman and responded with 17 points including six goals and 11 helpers. Cousineau missed the final two games of the season due to injury which really hurt Adrian’s depth in the NCAA Tournament. Cousineau will be looked upon as a guy who will greatly increase his production in 2011-12 as Adrian searches for point-makers. Newly appointed captain junior Andrew Dovey (Burlington, Ont.) will also be asked to increase his offensive numbers. Dovey scored nine goals and chipped in five assists for the Bulldogs and had a +13 rating with three game-winning goals. He scored a goal in the NCAA semifinal against Oswego State and had an assist in the NCAA championship game against St. Norbert. Do not look for Adrian to change its style of play as they work in newcomers into the lineup. On paper the newest recruiting class is smaller in stature, but quickness and speed is what fans can expect. “We will not lose our physical presence with guys finishing their checks and competing,” said Fogarty. “Our intent was to recruit a faster team and if people are looking for the biggest difference from the past four years it might be that aspect.” One addition to the lineup on defense is a familiar face in senior Chris Stansik (Livonia, Mich.), who missed last year due to injury. Stansik is a proven player whose return bolsters the team’s defensive intensity. Stansik has played in 85 career games and recorded 28 goals and 76 assists for a total of 104 points. He is an amazing +122 in his career and also has 12 power play goals. He can set the MCHA record for career points by a defenseman with a solid season surpassing last year’s record setter Quinn Waller. “Having Chris back is huge for us,” said Fogarty. “He is a team captain who leads by example and getting a healthy All-American player back on the blue line means more added depth to the defense. His knowledge of the game and situations makes him a real leader on the ice.” The defense also has the addition of sophomore Jordan Principalli
4
(Calgary, Alb.) who had to sit out last season. Principalli played during the 2009-10 season with Okotoks of the AJHL and saw action in 58 games with 32 points and 67 penalty minutes. Also, returning to the team is junior Shawn Courtney (Kaleden, B.C.) who really stepped up his game as a sophomore. Courtney played in 28 games and finished the season with nine points including seven assists. Courtney had a +15 rating and served 54 penalty minutes. The goaltending situation has always been anchored by Brad Fogal and for just cause. Fogal set the NCAA Division III record for wins in net and someone has really big shoes to fill. Well, two candidates are up for the challenge. A pair of freshmen enter the season looking to continue great goaltending by the Bulldogs. James Hamby (Ann Arbor, Mich.) is 5-11 and similar in size to Fogal. Hamby played for the Motor City Metal Jackets (NAHL) last season and had a 2.89 goals against average and .906 save percentage in 37 games. Competing with Hamby is Scott Sheckell (Kanata, Ont.) who is a much taller option at 6-3 and played with the Kanata Stallions in 2010-11. Sheckell played in 45 games with a 2.93 goals against average and a .915 save percentage. “We have two very capable goaltenders this season,” said Fogarty. “Brad did a great job for us over four years. I believe we have two guys who will battle it out and possibly split time during the season. It is nice to have depth between the pipes.” The Bulldogs will open the season in quest of their fifth straight MCHA regular season title on Saturday, October 22 at SUNY-Geneseo. The team’s home opener will also be their MCHA opener on Friday, November 4 against Northland.
Junior Jordan Watts enjoyed a good first season with the Bulldogs in 2010-11. Watts ranked sixth on the team with 23 points which included 11 goals and 12 assists.

HEAD COACH Ron Fogarty
102-12-2 at Adrian College 5th Season rfogarty@adrian.edu 517-264-3838 Ron Fogarty begins his fifth season behind the bench as the architect of the successful men’s hockey program at Adrian College. The Bulldogs needed a leader to begin a program and found the right man in Fogarty. In 2010-11, the Bulldogs compiled an overall record of 25-4-1 and advanced to the NCAA National Championship game. The national runner-up team finish was the best in the history of Adrian College. Fogarty also guided the team to its fourth straight MCHA regular season and Harris Cup titles and second straight NCAA Tournament appearance. The team finished second in the final USCHO Division III Poll which was the highest ranking in school and MCHA history. The Bulldogs defeated Elmira and Oswego State en route to the national title contest. Adrian fell just short 4-3 to St. Norbert College at Ridder Arena in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The Bulldogs once again led the nation in scoring offense (4.97 gpg) for the fourth consecutive year and led Division III in scoring margin (2.73 gpg). In 2009-10, the Bulldogs posted a record of 24-4 (20-0 MCHA) and won their third straight Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association (MCHA) regular season and Harris Cup titles. The automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament by winning the Harris Cup allowed Adrian to play their first tournament game at St. Norbert (Wis.). The Bulldogs fell 4-3 to the Green Knights nearly rallying from a 4-1 deficit. The team has compiled a 77-8-1 record under his watch, which is the best three-year beginning in NCAA Division III history. Last season marked the third straight year that Adrian led NCAA Division III in scoring (6.71 gpg). In addition, they led Division III in scoring margin (4.25) and penalty killing (90.5 percent) and ranked second on the power play (29.9 percent). The team finished the season ranked 10th in the USCHO.com national poll. Adrian posted a 27-1-1 record in 2008-09 while going a perfect 20-0 in the MCHA, which had never been done before in league history. The team once again was the top scoring team in Division III averaging 6.52 goals per game. In addition, the team ranked second in scoring defense allowing 1.69 goals per game. The Bulldogs led the nation in penalty minutes per game (26.6) and also had the best power play (35.9 percent). AC had the fourth-best penalty kill (88.3 percent) and had the most wins in Division III. At the conclusion of the season, Adrian was ranked seventh in the USCHO.com national poll. The Bulldogs had unprecedented success in 2007-08 as they set an NCAA single-season record for wins by a first-year program (26-3). Adrian College captured the Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association (MCHA) regular season and tournament titles in convincing fashion. The Bulldogs concluded the regular season with a 19-1 conference record which was nine points better than second place Marian. In the conference tournament, held in
Milwaukee, the Bulldogs needed overtime in the championship game against a pesky Finlandia squad but survived for the 1-0 win. Along the way, the Bulldogs were ranked as high as eighth in the national polls and set numerous statistical records. Adrian set 17 conference records in 2007-08 and ranked first in Division III in scoring offense (7.59 goals per game), scoring margin (5.34 goals per game), and power play percentage (.357). Prior to Adrian College, Fogarty served as assistant coach at Bowling Green State University (Ohio) in the Division I CCHA Conference and served as the top assistant coach at Clarkson University (New York). Fogarty was a four-year member of the Colgate ice hockey team before graduating in 1995. He was named to the 1992 ECAC All-Rookie team and received the Colgate Coaches’ Award in 1994. He participated in the Senior All-Star game following his senior season and upon graduation ranked 20th on the Red Raider’s all-time scoring list with 141 points. He remained at Colgate for three years as a member of the coaching staff. A native of Sarnia, Ontario, Fogarty played professional hockey for the Memphis Riverkings of the Central Hockey League during the 1995-96 season. He was voted to the AllRookie team and was honored with the team’s Mr. Hustle Award. Fogarty gained valuable coaching and recruiting experience from 1991-93 when he worked with the Bluewater Sharks (Bantam) of the Summer AAA. During his tenure, the Sharks compiled a 57-19-3 record and Fogarty was named the Coach of the Year after just one season. Fogarty and his wife, Monica, reside in Adrian and have three children, Jordan, Rachel and Emma.

2010 FROZEN FACEOFF
ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The historic 2010 Frozen Faceoff at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor was a special day for all Adrian College players, coaches and fans who braved the cold weather in order to be a part of the first NCAA Division III outdoor hockey game. The end result was not too shabby either as the ninth-ranked Bulldogs (8-2, 7-1 MCHA) blanked the Concordia (Wis.) University Falcons by a final score of 3-0. Senior Brad Fogal made 27 saves earning his 13th career shutout and his first this season. Senior Jeremy Cross played the final 6:25 of the second period in goal and made three saves. Seniors Joel Workman, Kyle Watson and Brad Houston all scored for Adrian College in the contest etching their name into the record books. Workman scored just 1:48 into the game unassisted at even strength. He took the puck and came from the side of the goal and slipped a wrap-around shot past Concordia goaltender Everett Devlin for his third tally of the season. Watson made it 2-0 after one period at 3:29 also at even strength. His second goal of the season was a sharp angle shot from the left faceoff circle which beat Devlin top shelf. Sam Kuzyk and Quinn Waller each had an assist on the goal. Midway through the second period, Houston scored his sixth of the year on the power play at 11:21. He took a pass from Mike Dahlinger and skated between the circles and let a shot go to the glove side of Devlin. The goaltender got a piece of the puck but it squirted past the goal line for a 3-0 lead. Kuzyk got his second assist of the day on the goal. Adrian had a slim 34-30 edge in shots on goal. The Adrian penalty kill continued to succeed allowing no power play on six attempts by the Falcons. The Bulldogs were 1-of-2 on the man advantage for the game. “This was a very unique opportunity and we are very grateful to the University of Michigan for allowing us to be a part of history.” said fourth-year head coach Ron Fogarty. “Our guys will remember this feeling for the rest of their lives. You look around this stadium and think of all the amazing athletes who have played here. To be the first hockey game here is such an honor. We got a chance to showcase Division III hockey and both programs played inspired hockey.”

The past two seasons have been the most important in its existence, as the NCAA granted the long-awaited automatic qualifier to the league’s postseason champion on April 14, 2009. The 2010 postseason marked the first time the winner of the Harris Cup advanced to the NCAA Tournament where Adrian College led early before falling by just one goal to eventual NCAA National runner-up St. Norbert College. The Bulldogs then one-upped that accomplishment by claiming a pair of NCAA Tournament wins in the 2011 postseason before falling by just a goal in the NCAA National Championship game. One major change over the past year is at the top, as the MCHA named Dr. G. Steven Larson the new commissioner of the league in July, 2010. Back in the late 1990’s, a group of independent NCAA hockey programs that all formed within the same time period came together to aid in scheduling and provide additional competitive opportunities for their programs. Hence, the Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association was born prior to the start of the 1998-1999 season. Charter members of the league were Benedictine University (Lisle, Illinois), The University of Findlay (Findlay, Ohio), Lawrence University (Appleton, Wisconsin), Marian University (Fond du Lac, Wisconsin), Milwaukee School of Engineering (Milwaukee, Wisconsin), and Northland College (Ashland, Wisconsin).
In the spring of 1999, the University of Minnesota at Crookston joined the MCHA to bring the total membership to five institutions. The next addition to the MCHA occurred in 2004-05 when Finlandia University (Hancock, Michigan) joined the conference. After staying at six members for three consecutive seasons, the MCHA saw expansive growth and moved to eight teams for the 2007-08 season, as Adrian College (Adrian, Michigan) and Concordia University (Mequon, Wisconsin) joined the ranks of the conference. The expansion did not stop there, as Lake Forest College (Lake Forest, Illinois) was accepted into the league and began play in the 2009-10 season, with Minnesota-Crookston leaving following the 2008-09 campaign to bring membership to the eight current schools. Harris CupNone of this would have been possible without the dedicated and forward thinking leadership of former MCHA President Dan Harris (pictured on right in photo). Harris, currently the Athletic Director at Milwaukee School of Engineering, spurred creation of the association and led it into the next century. His leadership was so valuable to the conference, that the MCHA named the league championship trophy after him when he formally resigned as the league president following the 2001-2002 season. The teams now compete each winter for the “Harris Cup”. Just as instrumental to the league was Terry Brand, who was named the first commissioner of the league in the summer of 2005 and stayed in that role until the end of the 2009-10 campaign. Chris Zills enters his 11th season as the league’s Director of Public Relations, maintaining all statistics, producing the weekly report, and administering the MCHA website, while also having added secretarial duties in 2004-2005. Jim Olson, who was named to the post in July of 2007, completes the staff as MCHA Supervisor of Officials, overseeing the league’s referees. The Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association promotes sportsmanship and exists to enhance the academic and athletic well being of its participants. The members of the MCHA are competitive with any college hockey program in the nation that competes at the NCAA Division III or II level.
The University of Findlay (OH) hosted the first ever MCHA Tournament and claimed the league’s first championship. After that inaugural season, Findlay left the league to pursue NCAA Division I membership in hockey and Benedictine dropped their hockey program moving them out of the league.

ADRIAN COLLEGE Adrian College evolved from a theological institute founded by the Wesleyan Methodist denomination at Leoni, Michigan, a small town east of Jackson, in 1845. In 1855 this institute united with the Leoni Seminary, a Methodist Protestant institution, to establish Michigan Union College. Legend states that members of the College became concerned about the environment at Leoni, which was nicknamed “Whiskey Town.” In 1859, this concern and other circumstances made it advisable to relocate or close. In the same year, Dr. Asa Mahan, pastor of the Plymouth Congregational Church in Adrian and a well-known educator, was encouraged by citizens of the community to establish a college. Mahan had served as the first president of Oberlin College and, before that, as an officer of Lane Theological Seminary in Cincinnati, Ohio. Dr. Mahan and his colleagues invited the officials and supporters of the closing Michigan Union College to join in establishing the new college at Adrian. After the invitation was accepted, the story says, the library holdings were loaded on an ox-cart in March 1859, and transported 60 miles to the new campus site on the west side of Adrian. On March 28, 1859, Adrian College was chartered by the Michigan legislature as a degreegranting institution with Dr. Mahan as its first president. Through a series of consolidations and denomination unifications, the College has maintained its relationship with The United Methodist Church. For almost 100 years, the campus consisted of several brick buildings stretching along Madison Street. Most of today’s campus was woods and fields. In the mid-1950s, the College, encouraged by the generosity of Ray W. Herrick, embarked in a building program that established the basis for the current campus. Today, when students walk in the area bounded on the east by Madison Street and edged by Downs Hall, Valade Hall, Cornelius House and Herrick Tower, they tread on the same ground that students hurried across in 1859 as they rushed to classes, meals and social events. Now, however, the campus consists of 100 acres, over 20 academic and service buildings and 10 residence halls, plus apartments and themed housing.

ARRINGTON ICE ARENA Arrington Ice Arena was officially dedicated and opened for business on October 19, 2007 as the men’s varsity hockey team squared off in their inaugural game against Potsdam State. The Bulldogs christened the new facility with a resounding 9-1 win in front of a packed crowd, who were also in attendance to see Lord Stanley’s Cup on loan from the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto. The facility is home to Adrian College’s men’s and women’s varsity Division III hockey teams as well as the ACHA Division I and III men’s hockey teams and the synchronized skating team. The arena is named after Dr. Robyn Arrington, Jr. and his brother, fellow Adrian alumnus Col. Harold Arrington. The brothers donated $3 million on behalf of their family. The $5.5 million project is also a place where local residents can use the facility for recreational activities. The operating schedule includes open skates for the community, learn-to-skate programs for children and adults and hockey programs for people of various ages and abilities. The arena consists of a single sheet of ice, 550 chairback seats, a media press box, a president’s seating area, concession stand, pro shop with skate rental, offices for ice sports coaches and personnel and locker rooms. For more information about Arrington Ice Arena, visit the website at (www.arringtonicearena.com). Arrington Ice Arena has already been praised as one of the best hockey venues in Division III.
