NICOLAY FIELD Adrian College has the privilege of playing in one of the finest NCAA Division III baseball facilities in the country in Nicolay Field, which was dedicated in 2008. Affectionately known as The Nic, it has served as host site for two NCAA Mideast Regionals (2009, 2018), six of seven MIAA tournaments, American Legion state championships and high school events. Nicolay Field is named in honor of Bud and Betty Bud and Betty Nicolay Nicolay, whose generous contributions helped build the estimated $1 million project. The stadium ground-breaking ceremony took place in September 2007 and special guest speaker Ernie Harwell, Hall of Fame baseball broadcaster with the Detroit Tigers, delivered the keynote address about what a great thing was being done for future generations of baseball players at Adrian College. The Bulldogs had been playing baseball at Riverside Park in Adrian for nearly 60 years before the construction of The Nic. Bud Nicolay is the retired president of Kar Nut Products Company, Inc. The company was started in the 1930’s when its founders roasted peanuts for the fans at Tiger Stadium in downtown Detroit. In President Dr. Jeffrey Docking presents the Nicolay’s with a 1971, Bud began his long service as a member of plaque in honor of their service the Adrian College Board of Trustees. to Adrian College Nicolay Field has state-of-the-art amenities including a playing surface completely covered in field turf by ProGrass, an inning-by-inning scoreboard, an underground drainage system, professional-caliber dugouts, bullpens and batting cages. The facility also has grandstand chair-back seating on top of the dugouts for a capacity of 300, a heated press box facility for media and broadcasters, lighting for night games, locker rooms, a training room, picnic/reception area, restrooms and a concession stand. The press box, with wireless internet and space for Adrian College Television and visiting radio, is dedicated in the honor of Frank and Shirley Dick, longtime supporters of AC. For the 2019 campaign, The Nic was renovated to expand the Adrian locker room as well as create a players lounge. The construction was made possible by a generous donation and continued support from the Nicolay family. The Bulldogs also utilize the near-by Frank and Shirley Dick Practice Facility--an indoor building that features five batting cages, pitching area and ability for infield and outfield practice--just beyond the right field wall of The Nic. The usage area is 80’ x 120’, has a turf floor and is heated for year-round use. Nicolay Field is located on the College campus at the end of Creehan Lane, as the road entrance is between Docking Stadium and Arrington Ice Arena. The stadium also can be accessed via Stratford Avenue off West Maumee Street.
