SEASON PREVIEW
ADRIAN COLLE
4
For the second year in a row, the Adrian College Softball team will be coming off a record setting season and look to continue the trend this year. Adrian started last season hot, winning its first 24 games, a school record. The Bulldogs were successful as well in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAA) finishing third in the conference, on their way to a 35-7 (11-5 MIAA) season, the most wins in Adrian softball history. The third place finish in the conference was a slight step back from the 2009 and 2010 seasons for the Bulldogs, after finishing runner-up in the MIAA those two years. Kristina Schweikert enters her fifth season as Head Coach for Adrian, as she hopes to have yet another winning season. Coming into this year, Schweikert has recorded a 119-43 (43-19 MIAA) record as head coach, which has helped to rebuild the program to a legitimate contender in the MIAA. The Bulldogs return a number of players that were vital to last season’s success. One of those players is senior pitcher Kelly Eberhardt (Wellington, Ohio/Black River) who saw continued success last year, being named First Team All-MIAA. Eberhardt finished the year posting a 22-6 record. This was the second season in a row in which Eberhardt tallied over 20 wins in the circle, as she went 20-8 in 2010, her sophomore season, as well as 10-4 her freshman year. Eberhardt broke her own school record last season, striking out 213 batters. “The big thing that makes her good is her strong presence on the mound,” Schweikert said. “The majority of her growth hasn’t been in physical strength but has been mentally and emotionally.” Eberhardt will have plenty of help in the circle, as Schweikert hopes to implement four different pitchers into the line-up. The primary back-up for Eberhardt is back, as junior Jami Shafley (Freeland, Mich./Midland) returns after a promising sophomore season. Shafley appeared in 18 games last season, starting 14 of them, and posting a 10-1 record with a 1.81 earned run average. Shafley also is the only Bulldog to have ever pitched a perfect game, as she did so on April 10, 2010 which was her freshman season. The Bulldogs also expect to see sophomore Sarah Muncey (Genoa, Ohio/Genoa) and freshman Brooke Stewart (Onsted, Mich./Onsted) in the circle this season. In the infield, sophomore Brittany Bertrand (Grand Blanc Mich/Goodrich) returns at third base after becoming an All-MIAA player in her first year. Bertrand played in all 42 games for the Bulldogs, but really came around once the MIAA season started. In MIAA games, Bertrand batted .465 with 17 runs batted in and 12 runs scored in 16 games. The .465 MIAA batting average made her the conferences batting champion, the first batting champion at Adrian since 1995. On the season, Bertrand hit .311 and tied for second on the team with seven doubles. Senior Maggie Hein (Adrian, Mich./Lenawee Christian) is back after playing over 40 games the past two seasons at shortstop. Hein got the start in all 42 games a year ago, batting .349 on the year. Hein finished the year with 37 hits and 17 runs batted in. This season will be a bit of a switch
up as Hein will move to the outfield with Tara Camper taking over the shortstop duties. “As a coaching staff, we decided it was the best move to use her speed and athleticism in the outfield,” Schweikert said. “We’ve had a lot of conversations with her about the change and we felt it was the best thing for our team and for her.” Camper, a junior, is making the transition to shortstop after appearing in 13 games last season. Camper will be replacing Hein, who moved to left field. Sophomore Katie Dewyre started all 42 games last year in left field, but is moving over to right field, replacing the graduated Katie Adams. “She’s aggressive and always talking on the field,” Schweikert said of Camper. “She always knows what to do. Her lack of experience is made up in how she communicates with her teammates on the diamond.” There will be four seniors taking the field for the Bulldogs, with Eberhardt, Hein, and outfielder Katrina Wotten, along with infielder Sarah Hall. The three players in the field, Hein, Wotten, and Hall, have all played in over 100 games in their time at Adrian, and bring a lot of experience to the group. Eberhardt is also close to that number as a pitcher, appearing in 87 games during her first three seasons. “It’s good for our team for the fact that they have played in every game since getting here.” Schweikert said. “They’ve seen it all, played in a regional, played in a conference tournament, so having that experience is huge for us.” Along with having the veterans on the team, the Bulldogs also feature a few new faces on the field. Adrian has five freshmen on the roster, in a season after three seniors graduated. One of these freshmen is the aforementioned Stewart, who will primarily be used at first base, but will see a few innings in the circle. “She will see more time at first then in the circle because of our pitching depth,” Schweikert said. “She’s an overall solid athlete. You wouldn’t know by her demeanor that she’s a freshman.” Another new starter for Adrian will be at catcher, as sophomore Ravin Toner will move to behind the plate to replace a senior from last season, in All-MIAA selection in Kristin Toney. Toner (Romulus, Mich./New Boston Huron) played in 31 games last season, mostly as a utility player. “I think the big thing for her is being a go-to for our pitchers,” Schweikert said. “Her talent is there and she’s worked hard to get to where she is. Gaining confidence will be big for her but she works for perfection which is a nice quality to have.” The MIAA conference will be a tough task again for the Adrian to handle this year, but with many of their top players returning from a 35-7 season last year and a new batch of talent on the field, the Bulldogs have to be considered serious contenders to win the conference. Last year, it was Alma who won the regular season and conference tournament for the MIAA, with Hope finishing second and Adrian third.

COACHING STAFF
Kristina Schweikert enters her fifth season as the head coach of the Adrian College softball team. The softball program has significantly improved under the direction of Coach Schweikert. Adrian has posted 20 or more wins in each of the four seasons under Schweikert for only the second time in school Kristina Schweikert history. In the 2009-10 Head Coach seasons, the Bulldogs 5th Season posted back-to-back kschweikert@adrian.edu runner-up finishes in the 517-265-5161 ext. 3998 MIAA. This was the best finish for the Bulldogs since Adrian won the MIAA championships in 1990-91. Two seasons ago, Schweikert guided the Bulldogs to a 34-8 overall record. The 34-win mark set an Adrian College team record. The Bulldogs also set school records with 58 doubles as a team, and 515 total bases. Under Schweikert, six different players have been AllMIAA honorees on 12 different occasions. Schweikert coached five players during the 2009 season that earned MIAA accolades. Three of the five players went on to receive All-Region honors, and one was recognized as the Most Valuable Pitcher in the MIAA conference as well as a Third Team All-American by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association. Schweikert used the talented roster to make a splash in the 2009 NCAA Mideast Regionals held in Greencastle, Ind. Adrian College represented the MIAA conference as the third-seed in the central region. The Rochester, N.Y. native took over the helm of the Bulldog softball program in 2008 after serving as an

ADRIAN COLLEGE
ADRIAN COLLE
Adrian College evolved from a theological institute founded by the Wesleyan Methodist denomination at Leoni, Michigan, a small town east of Jackson, in 1845. In 1855 this institute united with the Leoni Seminary, a Methodist Protestant institution, to establish Michigan Union College.
PLAYER BIOS
Legend states that members of the College became concerned about the environment at Leoni, which was nicknamed “Whiskey Town.” In 1859, this concern and other circumstances made it advisable to relocate or close. In the same year, Dr. Asa Mahan, pastor of the Plymouth Congregational Church in Adrian and a well-known educator, was encouraged by citizens of the community to establish a college. Mahan had served as the first president of Oberlin College and, before that, as an officer of Lane Theological Seminary in Cincinnati, Ohio. Dr. Mahan and his colleagues invited the officials and supporters of the closing Michigan Union College to join in establishing the new college at Adrian. After the invitation was accepted, the story says, the library holdings were loaded on an oxcart in March 1859, and transported 60 miles to the new campus site on the west side of Adrian. On March 28, 1859, Adrian College was chartered by the Michigan legislature as a degreegranting institution with Dr. Mahan as its first president. Through a series of consolidations and denomination unifications, the College has maintained its relationship with The United Methodist Church. For almost 100 years, the campus consisted of several brick buildings stretching along Madison Street. Most of today’s campus was woods and fields. In the mid-1950s, the College, encouraged by the generosity of Ray W. Herrick, embarked in a building program that established the basis for the current campus. Today, when students walk in the area bounded on the east by Madison Street and edged by Downs Hall, Valade Hall, Cornelius House and Herrick Tower, they tread on the same ground that students hurried across in 1859 as they rushed to classes, meals and social events. Now, however, the campus consists of 100 acres, over 20 academic and service buildings and 10 residence halls, plus apartments and themed housing.

ADRIAN COLLEGE RECOGNIZED AS A COLLEGE WITH THE “LEAST STUDENT DEBT LOAD” UPON GRADUATION
In its 2011 edition of America’s “Best Colleges,” U.S. News & World Report ranks Adrian College as one of the top five schools in the Midwest of Regional Colleges to have the least student debt load upon graduation. This is the third consecutive year that Adrian College has been featured and singled out by U.S. News and World Report. In its 2009 edition of America’s “Best Colleges” and again in 2010, Adrian College received top billing as a school to watch and as the #1 Up-and-Coming School in the Midwest. “Affordability is the top parental concern that parents express with respect to their child’s education,” said Adrian College President Jeffrey R. Docking. “We’re extremely pleased that U.S. News and World Report ranked us in the top five Midwest colleges that have students graduating with a lower debt.”
