SEASON PREVIEW

ADRIAN COLLE The Adrian College softball team has strung together three consecutive 20-win seasons and will look to continue the trend this season. After posting a school-record 34 wins and a trip to the NCAA Regionals in 2009, the Bulldogs finished the 2010 season with 29 wins and a runner-up finish in the MIAA. Finishing runner-up the past two seasons does not sit well with fourth-year head coach Kristina Schweikert who knows this year’s team is capable of knocking off defending champion Alma. “We have been battling it out with Alma the past few seasons to see who is going to come out on top,” Schweikert stated. “The girls have come into the season really wanting to take home a title after finishing second the past two seasons.” The Bulldogs return six starters from last year’s squad with holes to fill at first, second and third base. The biggest loss for Adrian is at first base with the graduation of First Team All-MIAA selection Meghan Stevens along with Jenna Kloster and Rachel Batman, who now serves as assistant coach. Adrian is a young team this season as the roster boasts only six upperclassmen including only two seniors, Katie Adams (Flat Rock, Mich./Flat Rock) and Kristin Toney (Cassopolis, Mich./ Edwardsburg). Adams is coming off a stellar season after being moved from the number nine hitter to the lead off spot. Adams excelled in the role resulting in being named First Team All-MIAA after finishing third in the MIAA with a .491 batting average. Adams led the MIAA in triples while being second in hits, fourth in runs scored and fourth in total bases. “Katie understands exactly what she needs to do and with her teammates around her, the team will win games,” Schweikert commented. “She sets the tone for the game and has done an outstanding job in the leadoff spot. She walks up to the plate with confidence no matter what the game situation.” In Toney, the Bulldogs will rely on her experience as a catcher to share her knowledge and mentality of the game with the younger players. Toney has started at catcher in all but six games during her career at Adrian. Over the past three seasons, Toney has steadily improved her batting average including being second on the team in 2010 with a .358 average. Toney’s defensive ability behind the plate helps keep the Adrian pitchers in line for the win. “Kristin has really proven to be the best catcher in the MIAA,” Schweikert stated. “She is one of the more vocal leaders on our team. She leads by example and there is never a day when she doesn’t work hard.” The Bulldogs return junior Kelly Eberhardt (Wellington, Ohio/ Black River) in the circle in 2011. Eberhardt was named First Team All-MIAA after a stellar second season. Taking over in the circle when All-American Kelly Tomasek went down with an injury, Eberhardt was thrown into the fire and excelled setting a school record with 195 strikeouts. “Kelly is a workhorse,” Schweikert said. “She was put in a tough position last season where she had to step up and fill a big role.” Eberhardt led the MIAA in wins while ranking second in innings pitched, strikeouts and appearances. Adrian returns two other pitchers in the sophomore tandem of Jessie Plague (Sterling Heights, Mich./Adlai E. Stevenson) and Jami Shafley (Freeland, Mich./Midland). The two combined to go 8-1 last season with earned run averages of 1.98 and 2.14 respectively. Freshman Sarah Muncey (Genoa, Ohio/Genoa) and Melissa Rich (Mount Morris, Mich./E.A. Johnson Memorial) have

been working hard in the offseason and will have an opportunity to see some innings in the circle. The Bulldogs return two players in the infield, juniors Maggie Hein (Adrian, Mich./Lenawee Christian) and Sarah Hall (Napoleon, Ohio/Napoleon). Hein stepped in last season to start 39 games at shortstop for Adrian. Hall, who saw time at second base and the designated player positions, returns as the team leader in most offensive categories. Hall returns for the Bulldogs as the team leader in homeruns (6), RBI’s (34), doubles (8) and slugging percentage (.568) while ranking second in runs (28) and total bases (67). Filling the role at third base will be sophomore Tara Camper (The Woodlands, Texas/Woodlands College Park). Camper has shown to be defensively more aggressive at third. The entire outfield returns for the Bulldogs with Adams in right, junior Katrina Wooten (Blackstock, Ont./Cartwright) in center and sophomore Amara Karapas (Saline, Mich./Saline) in left. Karapas was third on the team last season with five homeruns while Wooten tied for the team lead with five stolen bases. Coach Schweikert has brought in 11 freshmen that she believes can play various roles around the field and have the chance to make an impact right way for the young squad. The freshmen class boasts several girls who have shown speed on the base-paths and could be called upon as pinch runners in strategic situations. Chloe Stiriz (Wauseon, Ohio/Wauseon) a pitcher converted to second baseman, has been working hard in the offseason and may get an opportunity to make an impact. Katie Dewyre (Pemberville, Ohio/Eastwood) has shown solid plate discipline and could see at-bats. Brittany Bertrand (Grand Blanc, Mich./ Goodrich) and Ravin Toner (Cassopolis, Mich./Edwardsburg) could see time in the infield and outfield respectively. “The biggest thing this freshmen class brings is a new way of looking at things,” Schweikert explained. “Our freshmen work really hard and have shown the returning players that they are here to play. We have kids that while they are college rookies, have dealt will high pressure situations in the past. We have student-athletes that have competed for state championships, been class valedictorians and have achieved a lot in their lives already. They have so much that they can bring to the table.” The Bulldogs have a busy schedule to start the season as they head to the National Training Center in Clermont, Florida. The team will compete from February 27-March 4 playing in 10 games over six days. Adrian will face nine different teams including the sixth-ranked and 2009 National Champion, Messiah College. The home opener is scheduled for March 14 as Concordia (MI) travels to Adrian before the Bulldogs travel for the annual cross-town showdown with Siena Heights on March 16. Adrian opens MIAA play on the road this season as they travel to defending regular season champion Alma on March 23. Their first home MIAA contest is set for April 9 as they host St. Mary’s in a Breast Cancer Awareness game. “Alma and Trine are always tough games in our conference especially with Alma being our biggest rival,” Schweikert said. “Really every game in the MIAA is tough as you can’t afford any slip ups. The spring break game against Messiah will be good to see how we matchup with them. The rivalry game with Siena Heights is always a big game to try and see who is the top team in the city.”

ADRIAN COLLEGE

ADRIAN COLLE

Adrian College evolved from a theological institute founded by the Wesleyan Methodist denomination at Leoni, Michigan, a small town east of Jackson, in 1845. In 1855 this institute united with the Leoni Seminary, a Methodist Protestant institution, to establish Michigan Union College.

Legend states that members of the College became concerned about the environment at Leoni, which was nicknamed “Whiskey Town.” In 1859, this concern and other circumstances made it advisable to relocate or close. In the same year, Dr. Asa Mahan, pastor of the Plymouth Congregational Church in Adrian and a well-known educator, was encouraged by citizens of the community to establish a college. Mahan had served as the first president of Oberlin College and, before that, as an officer of Lane Theological Seminary in Cincinnati, Ohio. Dr. Mahan and his colleagues invited the officials and supporters of the closing Michigan Union College to join in establishing the new college at Adrian. After the invitation was accepted, the story says, the library holdings were loaded on an oxcart in March 1859, and transported 60 miles to the new campus site on the west side of Adrian. On March 28, 1859, Adrian College was chartered by the Michigan legislature as a degreegranting institution with Dr. Mahan as its first president. Through a series of consolidations and denomination unifications, the College has maintained its relationship with The United Methodist Church. For almost 100 years, the campus consisted of several brick buildings stretching along Madison Street. Most of today’s campus was woods and fields. In the mid-1950s, the College, encouraged by the generosity of Ray W. Herrick, embarked in a building program that established the basis for the current campus. Today, when students walk in the area bounded on the east by Madison Street and edged by Downs Hall, Valade Hall, Cornelius House and Herrick Tower, they tread on the same ground that students hurried across in 1859 as they rushed to classes, meals and social events. Now, however, the campus consists of 100 acres, over 20 academic and service buildings and 10 residence halls, plus apartments and themed housing.

ADRIAN COLLEGE NAMED MILITARY FRIENDLY SCHOOL Adrian College was included in the G.I. Jobs 2011 list of Military Friendly Schools. The list honors the top 15 percent of colleges, universities and trade schools which are doing the most to embrace America’s veterans as students. “Adrian College is honored to be selected as a Military Friendly School,” said Dr. Jeffrey Docking, president of Adrian College. “While our efforts to assist veterans are small compared to their efforts to defend our country, we appreciate being recognized as a college that believes in patriotism and service to our country.” Schools on the list range from state universities and private colleges to community colleges and trade schools. The common bond is their shared priority of recruiting students with military experience.
