A D R I A N CO L L E G E 2 0 11 - 1 2 O U T L O O K The Lady Bulldogs are coming off their best season ever where they made their first NCAA Tournament appearance and captured the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) O’Brien Cup championship to go along with a school-best 19-8-3 overall record. Adrian returns all but six players from last season including goaltender Emily Michelin who was named the school’s first Reebok First Team All-American. Michelin along with senior defenseman Kelly Salis were named All-NCHA this past season. “There has been huge success since the program started,” said first-year head coach Chad Davis. “As a head coach coming in my first year, I don’t think you can ask for much more. You have a great base. You have returners who are used to winning. They know how to win a championship. They all want to go to the next level and they got a taste of it last year.” Returning between the pipes is goaltender Emily Michelin who had a sensational freshman campaign. She became the first Adrian women’s hockey player to be named an All-American. Michelin wrapped up her first season with the Bulldogs setting a single-season team record with eight shutouts which ranked second in the nation. Michelin was ninth in the nation with a .708 (16-63) winning percentage.

assists (11), points (22), and shots (80). Rork was second on the team in points, goals, and shots. Providing more firepower in the forward position is Brooke Zaleski. Zaleski was tied for fourth on the team with 18 points courtesy of four goals and a team-high 14 assists, which stood ninth in league. Forward Ashley Gniewek leads the junior class and looks to repeat last year’s performance where she was third on the team in points with eight goals and 12 assists. She also tied for 16th (15th among forwards) in the conference in points. Also looking to make an impact in their third season are forwards Kendra Uliana and Ashley Chinn. Following Michelin with immediate impact as a freshman was forward Nina Laurie. Laurie played in 27 games a year ago and was tied for fourth on the team with 18 points (11 goals and 7 seven assists). She was third on team with a +12 rating, the highest of all returning players. Also making an impact in her inaugural season was forward Danielle Smith. Smith played in 29 games and recorded eight goals which tied for fifth-best on the team. Also receiving a lot of playing time as a freshman was forward Lauren Turner, defenseman Amanda Gay and defenseman Alix Vallee. Vallee had a +8 rating which tied for fourth-best on the team. The freshmen class is led by defenseman Courtney Millar and forward Lauren Zachwieja. Transfers include junior defender Kristin Maton, sophomore forward Sarah Connelly and senior goalie Brittany Zeches who look to provide even more depth to an already very talented squad.

“The first thing you do as a new coach is you see who’s in net,” mentioned Davis. “You see you have an All-American. She was a freshman last year and performed very well. She’s going to get better and better and that’s the foundation of your team. We look forward to seeing her in the net.” Leadership will be an important facet of this year’s squad as they have five seniors who have been part of the program their whole career. Kelly Salis, Olivia Rork, Brooke Zaleski, Jenna Corbin, and Shana Davis look to utilize their experience on the ice to lead this team to success. All-Conference defensemen Salis will look again to be a defensive force on the blue-line and also provide the offense with a spark. Salis showed that she is one of the most versatile players in the league a year ago where she posted a career-high nine goals, which was fourth on the team. Her 17 points was fourth in the conference among all defensemen. Forward Olivia Rork got the nod for All-Conference Honorable Mention last year and earned it with career-highs in goals (11),

The Northern Collegiate Hockey Association preseason coaches’ poll results have picked the Lady Bulldogs to finish third in the conference. The defending regular season champion, UW-River Falls, was voted as the favorite, the same team that Adrian beat in the conference tournament. “We know what we need to do as a team and what we want to prove and what we want to accomplish this year”, said Davis. “Whether you’re last in the poll or first, at the end of the day it’s what you do on the ice and that’s why we are looking forward to getting his season started.” The Bulldogs will open the season with a non-conference road game against nationally ranked Oswego State on October 28. The first home contest for the Bulldogs will be on November 19 at 7:00 p.m. as they host St. Norbert.

WOMEN’S HOCKEY Arrington Ice Arena was officially dedicated and opened for business on October 19, 2007 as the men’s varsity hockey team squared off in their inaugural game against Potsdam State. The Bulldogs christened the new facility with a resounding 9-1 win in front of a packed crowd, who were also in attendance to see Lord Stanley’s Cup on loan from the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto. The facility is home to Adrian College’s men’s and women’s varsity Division III hockey teams as well as the ACHA Division I and III men’s hockey teams and the synchronized skating team. The operating schedule includes open skates for the community, learnto-skate programs for children and adults and hockey programs for people of various ages and abilities. The arena consists of a single sheet of ice, 550 chair-back seats, a media press box, a president’s seating area, concession stand, pro shop with skate rental, offices for ice sports coaches and personnel and locker rooms. ADRIAN COLLEGE

A D R I A N CO L L E G E

Adrian College evolved from a theological institute founded by the Wesleyan Methodist denomination at Leoni, Michigan, a small town east of Jackson, in 1845. In 1855 this institute united with the Leoni Seminary, a Methodist Protestant institution, to establish Michigan Union College. Legend states that members of the College became concerned about the environment at Leoni, which was nicknamed “Whiskey Town.” In 1859, this concern and other circumstances made it advisable to relocate or close. In the same year, Dr. Asa Mahan, pastor of the Plymouth Congregational Church in Adrian and a well-known educator, was encouraged by citizens of the community to establish a college. Mahan had served as the first president of Oberlin College and, before that, as an officer of Lane Theological Seminary in Cincinnati, Ohio. Dr. Mahan and his colleagues invited the officials and supporters of the closing Michigan Union College to join in establishing the new college at Adrian. After the invitation was accepted, the story says, the library holdings were loaded on an oxcart in March 1859, and transported 60 miles to the new campus site on the west side of Adrian. On March 28, 1859, Adrian College was chartered by the Michigan legislature as a degreegranting institution with Dr. Mahan as its first president. Through a series of consolidations and denomination unifications, the College has maintained its relationship with The United Methodist Church.

For almost 100 years, the campus consisted of several brick buildings stretching along Madison Street. Most of today’s campus was woods and fields. In the mid-1950s, the College, encouraged by the generosity of Ray W. Herrick, embarked in a building program that established the basis for the current campus. Today, when students walk in the area bounded on the east by Madison Street and edged by Downs Hall, Valade Hall, Cornelius House and Herrick Tower, they tread on the same ground that students hurried across in 1859 as they rushed to classes, meals and social events. Now, however, the campus consists of 100 acres, over 20 academic and service buildings and 10 residence halls, plus apartments and themed housing.

ADRIAN COLLEGE RECOGNIZED AS A COLLEGE WITH THE “LEAST STUDENT DEBT LOAD” UPON GRADUATION In its 2011 edition of America’s “Best Colleges,” U.S. News & World Report ranks Adrian College as one of the top five schools in the Midwest of Regional Colleges to have the least student debt load upon graduation. This is the third consecutive year that Adrian College has been featured and singled out by U.S. News and World Report. In its 2009 edition of America’s “Best Colleges” and again in 2010, Adrian College received top billing as a school to watch and as the #1 Up-and-Coming School in the Midwest. “Affordability is the top parental concern that parents express with respect to their child’s education,” said Adrian College President Jeffrey R. Docking. “We’re extremely pleased that U.S. News and World Report ranked us in the top five Midwest colleges that have students graduating with a lower debt.”
