SEASON PREVIEW Entering his third year as the Adrian College women’s soccer head coach, Ali Alamdari has already done things with the program that is turning heads. Alamdari’s teams over the past two seasons have compiled a record of 2112-5 including a MIAA record of 10-6-2. When you place those numbers against the history of the program, it is truly a success story. Between 2000-2008 the Bulldog women’s soccer program had just one winning season (12-7-1 in 2002) and had never finished above .500 in the MIAA standings. In two seasons, Alamdari has guided the program to 21 wins while the previous eight years yielded a total of 34 wins. The encore of 2009 will be tough as the Bulldogs lose a lot of scoring output from a team that went 11-6-2, 6-2 in the MIAA and finished second in the conference standings, which was a school best. The two leading scorers in the history of the program are gone as Lindsay Chitwood and Sarah Evans combined to form a dynamic scoring duo. Chitwood totaled 41 goals and 16 assists in her career graduating as the school’s leading scorer. The good news is that she will be joining the coaching staff and will assist Alamdari and his mission to bring home conference titles to Adrian College. Evans had a career-high eight goals as a junior in 2008 and had four goals and six assists in 2009. “Losing offensive production was the number one thing that needed to be addressed heading into the offseason,” said Alamdari. “I feel like we have some players back in Courtney Pomeroy, Bethany Cousino and Samantha Bono who will be ready to step up this year. We also have a solid freshmen class that features Anika Johnson and Sam Barker, who I feel will make an immediate impact and be solid four-year players for us.” Pomeroy, a sophomore midfielder from St. Clair Shores (Lake Shore H.S.), played in 16 matches as a freshman off the bench and finished with two goals and one assist. Her highlight of the season came against Alma when she scored the game-winner in a 1-0 win over the Scots. She also scored a goal at Anderson and had an assist at Trine. Cousino, a senior forward from Monroe (St. Mary’s Catholic Central H.S.), was limited to just four matches and made one start as a junior. She picked up one assist at Anderson and was slowed by injuries. Bono, a senior forward from Oxford (Oxford H.S.), ranked second on the team with six goals and 15 points as a junior. She played in all 19 matches and made 17 starts. Bono netted a hat trick in the team’s third match at Anderson and also scored a goal against Huntington, Trine and Rochester. Johnson and Barker are both supreme talents that had offers from bigger schools. Johnson attended Stevensville Lakeshore High School and was named honorable mention all-state as well as all-region and all-conference in 2009. Barker had a Division I scholarship offer but decided to attend Adrian College. She attended Temperance Bedford High School and was a scoring machine for the Kicking Mules. “Johnson and Barker are exceptional players and we are blessed to have them here at Adrian College,” said Alamdari. “I feel like they have the ability to be special and set records along the way. The ceiling is so high for them and they could be the future of the team.”

4

Also returning to the team as an all-around midfielder is sophomore Lauren Cozzi (Roselle, Ill./St. Viator H.S.) who was named Second Team All-MIAA a year ago. Cozzi ranked fourth on the team with 10 points as a freshman and was one of three players to start in all 19 matches. She had one assist in three straight games from Sept. 12-16 and also scored a goal against Anderson, Trine and Olivet. “Cozzi is one of the top five technical players in the MIAA,” said Alamdari. “Her strength on the ball is remarkable and she is a tireless worker. She has been working on her communication skills on the field which is huge because while she can score, she also is a great playmaker and can set up our attackers.” The Bulldogs will also look for continued production from Tessa Kellar. Kellar, a senior from Novi (Farmington Hills Mercy H.S), played in all 19 games and made 14 starts as a junior midfielder. She scored a pair of goals and also dished out three assists. She had a three-point game at Anderson and also scored the game-winner on Oct. 14 at Albion. Newcomers Jordan Wolf (Portage, Mich./Central H.S.) and McKenzie Doda (Holland, Mich./West Ottawa H.S.) have played together for TKO Premier Soccer Club and each had solid prep careers. Wolf helped lead her team to a Division I state championship in 2009. Both will look to contribute immediately. On the defensive end, the Bulldogs have a stout nucleus of players who coach Alamdari believe are the best unit heading into the season. Kellie Irwin, Sabrina Fortney and Katie Caruso were very potent in heading off potential trouble and making the goalkeeper’s life a little easier. Adrian yielded just 13 goals in 19 matches last season. Irwin, a junior from Kentwood (East Kentwood H.S.), was named First Team All-MIAA a year ago and justifibly so after helping lead the Bulldogs to a 6-2 mark in league play. Fortney, a senior from Spring Lake (Spring Lake H.S.), was named Second Team All-MIAA as a sophomore in 2008 and continued her steady play into last year. Caruso, a sophomore from Novi (Novi H.S.), saw action in 18 matches and made 13 starts as a freshman. “Our defense has been our trademark since I arrived here at Adrian College,” commented Alamdari. “We want to be known as a balanced soccer team this year and hopefully our defense will carry us until the offensive pieces come together.” The goalkeeping situation is also a positive for the Bulldogs as they return Second Team All-MIAA performer Steffeny Burns. Burns, a junior from Trenton (Trenton H.S.), made big strides in net as a sophomore. She started all 19 matches and posted six shutouts. Her goals against average was a paltry 0.68 and she had a .881 save percentage. Also hoping to see time in net is Chayna Wallace and Jessica Toth. Wallace, a sophomore from Toledo, Ohio (Bedford H.S.), appeared in five matches as a freshman and will likely see a lot of action in the early part of the season. She made 11 saves and allowed one goal in 159 minutes. Toth, a freshman from Kalamazoo (Mattawan H.S.), also played for TKO Premier Soccer and will likely play during reserve games to get acclimated to the collegiate level.

COACHING STAFF on the All-MIAA Team in 2008. The Bulldogs were also recognized as the 12th Most Improved Program nationally out of over 425 NCAA Division III women's soccer programs. Adrian Soccer History Alamdari's teams over the past two seasons have compiled a record of 21-12-5 including a MIAA record of 10-6-2. When you place those numbers against the history of the program, it is truly a success story. From the beginning of the program in 1989 through 2007, the Bulldog women's soccer program had just one winning season (12-7-1 in 2002) and had never finished above .500 in the MIAA standings. Alamdari is currently second in career wins at AC, behind former head coach Rick Gutierrez who earned 32 wins with the Bulldogs from 1998 through 2005. Away from Adrian Before taking over as the head coach at Adrian, Alamdari served as the assistant coach for the Albion College women's soccer program and helped the team to a 25-7-6 record in two seasons. The team made a turnaround upon his arrival going 19-172 in the previous two campaigns. Albion captured the 2007 MIAA Tournament and Alamdari mentored all goalkeepers including MIAA Player of the Year Caitlin Bowman. During the summer, Alamdari has served on the camp staff at the University of Michigan since 2008. He also serves as the founder and director of the Adrian Soccer Academy which formed in the summer of 2009. Prior to joining the college ranks, Alamdari served as the Women’s Head Coach for Loy Norrix High School in Kalamazoo, Michigan and Goalkeeper Coach for Portage Northern High School in Portage, Michigan and was active in the club scene with TKO Premier and Kalamazoo Kingdom Reserves. Coach Alamdari is licensed by the NSCAA and USSF, and holds a Master of Arts degree in Performance Driven Leadership from Western Michigan University.

Head Coach Ali Alamdari Western Michigan, 2001 Third Season (21-12-5) aalamdari@adrian.edu (517) 265-5161 ext. 4054 Ali Alamdari will enter his third season as the head coach of the Adrian College women's soccer team in 2010. 2009 Season Review Coach Alamdari led the 2009 Bulldogs to a record of 11-62, ending the season ranked #10 in the NSCAA DIII Central Region. Adrian finished the year as the MIAA Runners-Up, and saw four players honored with All-MIAA nominations, including NSCAA All-Central Region nominee Lindsay Chitwood who led the MIAA in scoring in 2009. The 2009 Bulldogs were nationally ranked in several NCAA statistical categories. Out of over 425 DIII teams, Adrian ranked 10th in Team Save Percentage (0.889), 37th in Goals Against Average (0.662), and 54th in Shutout Percentage (0.526). The season saw several school records broken including Fewest Goals Against, Highest Win Percentage, and Highest MIAA Finish. 2008 Season Review In his first season at Adrian in 2008, Alamdari took the program to a new level as he coached the Bulldogs to a 10-6-3 overall record including the school's first-ever berth in the MIAA Tournament Semifinals. The 10-win season was only the second double-digit win season in the last twenty years at AC. Under the direction of Alamdari, Adrian placed two players

to leadership on the sideline.” Chitwood will serve as the program’s recruiting and fundraising coordinator and head coach for reserve matches. She graduated from Adrian College as the all-time leader in school history with 41 goals, 98 points, 16 game-winning goals and 16 assists. She helped Adrian College to their best finish in MIAA history placing second with a 11-6-2 overall record (6-2 MIAA) in 2009. She has named First Team All-MIAA as a senior and led the conference in points (30) and goals (11). She was named Adrian College Female Athlete of the Year in 2009-10 as she also excelled in track and field for the Bulldogs. In total, Chitwood was named Second Team All-MIAA three times during her first three seasons. Chitwood received her bachelor’s degree in marketing from Adrian College in May 2010. She is the daughter of Garry and Sue Chitwood. She attended Lakeview High School in St. Clair Shores and was named the Best Female Athlete at Lakeview as a senior.

Assistant Coach Lindsay Chitwood Adrian College, 2010 First Season lchitwood@adrian.edu (517) 265-5161 ext. 5009 Lindsay Chitwood will serve as the assistant women’s soccer coach for the 2010 season after a very successful collegiate career at Adrian College. “Lindsay wowed the hiring committee with her understanding of the game and passion for the position,” said head coach Ali Alamdari. “She has a great grasp on our grassroots recruiting efforts, and we know that the leadership that she provided on the field will easily translate

ADRIAN COLLEGE

ADRIAN COLLEGE INFORMATION

Adrian College evolved from a theological institute founded by the Wesleyan Methodist denomination at Leoni, Michigan, a small town east of Jackson, in 1845. In 1855 this institute united with the Leoni Seminary, a Methodist Protestant institution, to establish Michigan Union College. Legend states that members of the College became concerned about the environment at Leoni, which was nicknamed “Whiskey Town.” In 1859, this concern and other circumstances made it advisable to relocate or close. In the same year, Dr. Asa Mahan, pastor of the Plymouth Congregational Church in Adrian and a well-known educator, was encouraged by citizens of the community to establish a college. Mahan had served as the first president of Oberlin College and, before that, as an officer of Lane Theological Seminary in Cincinnati, Ohio. Dr. Mahan and his colleagues invited the officials and supporters of the closing Michigan Union College to join in establishing the new college at Adrian. After the invitation was accepted, the story says, the library holdings were loaded on an ox-cart in March 1859, and transported 60 miles to the new campus site on the west side of Adrian. On March 28, 1859, Adrian College was chartered by the Michigan legislature as a degreegranting institution with Dr. Mahan as its first president. Through a series of consolidations and denomination unifications, the College has maintained its relationship with The United Methodist Church.

For almost 100 years, the campus consisted of several brick buildings stretching along Madison Street. Most of today’s campus was woods and fields. In the mid-1950s, the College, encouraged by the generosity of Ray W. Herrick, embarked in a building program that established the basis for the current campus. Today, when students walk in the area bounded on the east by Madison Street and edged by Downs Hall, Valade Hall, Cornelius House and Herrick Tower, they tread on the same ground that students hurried across in 1859 as they rushed to classes, meals and social events. Now, however, the campus consists of 100 acres, over 20 academic and service buildings and 10 residence halls, plus apartments and themed housing.

ADRIAN COLLEGE NAMED MILITARY FRIENDLY SCHOOL Adrian College is pleased to announce that it is included in this year’s version of G.I. Jobs 2011 list of Military Friendly Schools. The list honors the top 15 percent of colleges, universities and trade schools which are doing the most to embrace America’s veterans as students. “Adrian College is honored to be selected as a Military Friendly School,” said Dr. Jeffrey Docking, president of Adrian College. “While our efforts to assist veterans are small compared to their efforts to defend our country, we appreciate being recognized as a college that believes in patriotism and service to our country.” Schools on the list range from state universities and private colleges to community colleges and trade schools. The common bond is their shared priority of recruiting students with military experience.
