We are dedicated to improving the quality of life for all ages by providing a variety of recreational activities, community events, facilities, and services that collectively enrich the lives of all patrons. The Boerne Parks & Recreation Department staff would like to thank you for so many great memories in 2015. It certainly was a memorable year - the extraordinary rains brought months of soggy parks, muddy trails, and cancelled events. But on the bright side, they also brought vivid green grass and a pallet of colorful blooms, making this spring and summer some of the most beautiful seasons in recent memory. Despite the crazy weather, 2015 was a year of progress for our city parks. The Old #9 Trail got a much-needed facelift, and an exciting plan to renovate Optimist Park was finalized. Stay tuned for the new-and-improved Optimist Park, coming your way in 2016.

This year, we’re eager to continue providing Boerne with world-class facilities, community events, recreational programs, and education classes for all ages and interests. We also have some potential new partnerships and exciting surprises in the works, so keep your eyes and ears open for Parks & Rec news in 2016. As always, we thank you for your continued support. We look forward to seeing you and your family at any of our numerous fun, healthy and creative recreation opportunities. This 2016, come on out and play with Boerne Parks & Recreation!

PARKS & RECREATION
SUPPORT BOERNE Here at Boerne Parks & Rec, making life enjoyable is our number one goal. To that end, we maintain over 400 acres of green spaces and four miles of trails; we run athletic programs that make fitness fun; we organize classes, festivals, events, camps, and much more. It’s our honor to provide these services for Boerne. We couldn’t ask for a more engaged and supportive community. That sense of community drives us to keep improving the quality of life in our town. Help us make Boerne the best it can be by supporting the City of Boerne Parks & Recreation Department.

VOLUNTEER AT AN EVENT We may be biased, but we think Parks & Rec events are some of the best times in Boerne. Come lend a hand at our events. It’s a great way to have fun while supporting your community and earning service hours for work or school.
2 SUPPORT US THROUGH ADVERTISING Promote your organization by advertising with the Parks & Rec Department. Increase name recognition with an ad in next year’s guidebook or a banner on one of our softball field fences. Get the word out by sponsoring an event or running a commercial during a Movies in the Park night.
3 ADOPT A PARK OR TRAIL Nothing brings people together like volunteering in the great outdoors. Adopting a Boerne park or trail is a great way to boost teamwork through community service. We’ll put your group to work doing litter pickup, landscaping, weeding, watering, planting, and more. It never fails to create a bond. Take it from someone who knows, like these past and current Boerne park adopters: ›Veterans › of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 688 City Lake Park ›Angels › All Around You Ministry Veterans Park ›Hill › Country Montessori School Optimist Park ›Community › Bible Church River Road Park
MEMORIAL TREE PROGRAM Looking for the gift that will last a lifetime? How about several lifetimes? With our Memorial Tree Program, you can honor your loved one for years to come and give a gift to the whole community. Memorial trees are planted in our city parks in the fall, and each tree is marked with a commemorative plaque in the honoree’s name.
5 MEMORIAL BENCH PROGRAM Sitting on a park bench to watch the world go by is one of life’s greatest pleasures. Commemorate your loved ones with a memorial bench in one of our city parks. Each bench has space for a plaque to recognize the organization, donor, or loved one being honored.

STEWARDSHIP Protecting a piece of vanishing Texas wilderness for future generations is a primary goal of the CNC&F. The nature center collaborates with many agencies, organizations and individuals to address concerns of the Cibolo watershed. The Cibolo Creek, lined by tall Cypress trees, is a critical habitat for wildlife and an important source of water for the area. The creek also doubles as an outdoor classroom during educational programming.

CIBOLO NATURE CENTER & FARM

Whether it is school field trips, summer camps, educational and research programs, shopping at the farmers market or taking a family hike, the nature center offers new experiences and opportunities to connect with nature. For 26 years, the CNC&F has been an area where all ages can enjoy one of the few remnants of a vanishing wilderness.

Need a little sustenance before you return to the shops? Boerne offers a host of fine and casual dining options, a variety of bakeries, coffee shops, microbreweries and more – some with outside seating available, so you can continue to enjoy our beautiful Hill Country weather.
NATURAL BEAUTY Boerne has great options for outdoor living! Enjoy our extensive trail system along Cibolo Creek, including River Road Park, where you can cast a line, bring a picnic, ride a bike and enjoy your day. Not far from the Hill Country Mile is the Old No. 9 Trail that follows the historic alignment of the old San Antonio & Aransas Pass Railroad route that brought early visitors from San Antonio to Boerne. On both trails, several temporary sculptures have been installed as part of the Boerne Art al Fresco Public Art Competition. Be sure to pick up a Public Art Walking tour brochure from the Visitors Center, The Chamber of Commerce, The Patrick Heath Public Library and downtown retailers. RIVER SOUTH ARTS DISTRICT
BOERNE CITY CAMPUS
South of the Cibolo is a quieter side of Boerne with more great places to shop, eat and relax. Art and design shops, galleries, restaurants, lodging, and some of the city’s most stunning historic buildings can be found including St. Peter’s Catholic Church, an iconic limestone structure built high on a hill overlooking the city. The church was modeled after San Antonio’s Mission de la Purisma (1730) with twin towers that rise 65 feet in the air. Next door, The Phillip Manor has seen many uses over the last 150 years, and now has been restored into a boutique hotel, pub and event center. Across the street, the two-story triple column structure with arched windows is the Victorian style Carstanjen House (also called The Mansion House). Nearby is the famous Kronkosky Tower, offering the best view in Boerne.
The Hill Country Mile is all about community, not only providing a better place to live, but also a better place to visit. Boerne’s Patrick Heath Library, which opened in 2011, is a state-of-the-art, LEED Gold Certified 30,000 square foot facility. They offer free WiFi, live music monthly and have a rare Low German Bible from 1614 on display. The library itself is a beautiful facility, but the grounds are just as fabulous. In addition to gorgeous native plants, they also feature a Heritage Plaza with a windmill, smokehouse, rainwater catchment tank and grape arbor, along with an outdoor classroom and multiple quiet areas to read. New to the facility in the spring of 2016 will be an outdoor amphitheater.
Art al Fresco, an “art on loan” program, is an outdoor public art competition that temporarily places sculptures throughout the city’s historic downtown - known as Boerne’s Hill Country Mile - and Boerne’s Trail system, where visitors and residents can enjoy a walking tour of the sculptures right in the heart of Boerne. Ten sculptures are in place through mid-September 2016. To help navigate the exhibit, Art al Fresco offers a free, self-guided walking tour, available via download through Otocast. Simply download the app on any smartphone or app-enabled device to explore Art al Fresco and hear information from the artists themselves on their sculptures and creative inspiration. Brochures are also available at Patrick Heath Public Library, Boerne Convention and Visitors Bureau, Greater Boerne Area Chamber of Commerce, and downtown retailers. Residents and visitors are encouraged to vote for their favorite sculpture to select “Boerne’s Choice” which will be recognized at the end of the competition. Voting information is available at www.artalfresco.org or through the mobile app, Otocast. We know you’ll want to make Art al Fresco an annual tradition! For more information and updates, join us on Facebook. Facebook.com/BoerneArtalFresco. For more detailed information on the sculptures visit our website at www.artalfresco.org.
