OCTOBER 2017
Editorial There seems to be a common theme linking a number of the films going on general release in the UK this month - that of survival. In some cases, protagonists are literally fighting for survival against the elements. This is the case with 6 Below and The Mountain Between Us, while Geostorm is a popcorn flick in which the whole of the world’s weather system has gone haywire!
Big Films Monthly! Published on the first of every month.
Norwegian thriller The Snowman has a certain Winter bleakness, and both The Ritual and Jungle have groups of friends getting into profound trouble during outdoors trips. But, of course, the struggle to survive or win through against the odds (as well as finding out what you’re made of when pushed to the limits) is a key ingredient of (nearly) all cinema - not least this month’s blockbusters Thor: Ragnarok, The Lego Ninjago Movie, and (the film featured on our front cover) Blade Runner 2049.
Currently, Mal’s Movies has three ongoing activities, and these are:-
The original Blade Runner movie (released in 1982) wasn’t a box office success at the time but it has rightly gained a huge cult following over the years. Ridley Scott’s masterpiece which was based on the novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? by science fiction author Philip K. Dick - has been immensely influential; both thematically and stylistically.
The YouTube Channel:-
Fortunately for those of us looking forward to Blade Runner 2049 - Denis Villeneuve, the director of this new sequel, has great reverence and respect for the original. It looks as if the film is in safe hands, as he’s on record as having said the following (with which we shall close): “I'm among the hardcore fans of Blade Runner. Blade Runner is one of my favourite movies of all time. It's a movie that is linked with my love and passion for cinema.” MvL

BLADE RUNNER - The Original Movie There have been a number of different versions of the iconic 1982 sci-fi movie Blade Runner released over the years; including the socalled Theatrical Cut and a 1992 Ridley Scott approved Director’s Cut. However, I recommend the 2007 Final Cut (sometimes called the 25th-Anniversary edition) as a pinnacle of the sci-fi genre. Looking crisp and impressive on Blu-ray, for example, this version is an absolute masterpiece!

Here’s a quick run down of the full-length movies released to date - as well as the other feature films we already know are in the pipeline for release sometime in 2019.
