moral code is defined as a set standard of rules and laws which is acceptable to society and which we hold ourselves to. I believe we are a sum total of all our life experiences, which influence our actions and how we view the world in general. We are all socialized differently, and possess our own moral compass guided by our own fundamental principles of right and wrong. There are many references that serve as my moral guide, with God being the ultimate authority. However, I have set my own moral boundaries and when I inch too close to that line, my moral compass then becomes my guide. One of my many guiding principles in life is to not ask for anything from someone that I am not willing to give: that is hypocrisy. I cannot demand honesty, if I am dishonest; I cannot demand respect if I am disrespectful; I cannot demand trust if I am not trustworthy and I most certainly cannot hold others to moral codes by which I am not willing to live. Another principle I live by is to never view another individual as a lesser life. When I view all humans as being created equal, when I start seeing everyone as God sees them, then I am less likely to think of myself as “better than. Admittedly, I do sometimes

RHEMA MAGAZINE: OCT/NOV 2013

Note

get on my proverbial high horse and lambast those I consider deviant, forgetting that as humans we are all prone to vices. Although some vices can be categorized as minor, they run the gamut from addictions to sheer depravity and include a myriad of negative character traits and flaws. These flaws can impede growth in all areas of our lives. My third guiding principle is accepting people as they are- with all their idiosyncrasies. I accept them because I do not possess the power to change them; neither can I wish the behavior away. I have to allow people to be who they are, appreciating and enjoying them for who they are. We are not clones of each other, I recognize everyone has a different reality and trying to change them will only result in frustration and resentment. I recognize the only person I can change is myself, through my actions, my thoughts and my beliefs. While it is not my intent for you to adopt my guiding principles, I do encourage you to set your own. We are the person that we see when we look in the mirror, and our reflection should be one we are at peace with. We are the only person responsible for our choices, morally and legally and therefore must be prepared to live with the outcome of those choices. Valerie Brown rhemamagazine.com 4

Seasonal Affective Disorder By: Dacie Gayle

F

all has begun and so has school, football season and sweater weather. But fall also brings shorter days, less sunlight and colder weather. In these environments, individuals may suffer from Seasonal Affective Disorder. Seasonal Affective Disorder or SAD is a mental disorder in which individuals feel mildly to moderately depressed during the months of October- April. The direct cause of SAD is unknown, but there are factors that may contribute to this disorder. They include a disruption of your circadian rhythm, your sleep cycle: especially after Daylight Savings Time, a reduced level of serotonin: a neurotransmitter that affects one’s mood, or a change in melatonin levels: a natural hormone which affects sleep and mood. Symptoms may include anxiety, hopelessness, loss of energy, heavy feelings in the arms or legs, social withdrawal, oversleeping, weight gain, change in appetite and irritability. Although one may experience some of these symptoms during the fall/ winter, which is normal, if an individual constantly suffers from these symptoms only during the colder months RHEMA MAGAZINE: OCT/NOV 2013

then a doctor should be consulted. A consult about this disorder will include a physical exam as well as a mental exam where the physician will ask questions about the patient’s depression. The questions will mainly focus on the timing of one’s feelings of depression and whether these feelings are felt during the same time each year. Light therapy can be used to treat Seasonal Affective Disorder. In this treatment, individuals sit next to a light box, an instrument that artificially simulates sun light, for a distinct amount of time throughout the day. This treatment has been proven effective in improving the moods of those with this disorder. For those with more severe depression, antidepressants can be used. Other lifestyle changes including open blinds, trimming tree branches that block windows and exercising can also improve the moods of those with Seasonal Affective Disorder. Natural supplemental remedies such as St. John’s Worth, Melatonin and Omega 3 fatty acids are also encouraged. Sources:

CREATE THE ATMOSPHERE

W

e serve a God who spoke what He wanted this universe to become into existence. For six days, He spoke life into an atmosphere as described in Genesis 1 as void and dark. Day after day, God said, “Let there be” and there was and, at the conclusion, He declared it was very good. When man was formed, he became God-kind because God breathed Himself into His creation and gave him authority over what He took time to construct. Just as God called the light “day” and the dark “night”, and the firmament “heaven” and the dry land “earth” He gave man a starring role in the creation process to call the animals’ name into existence. Today their names go uncontested; it remains. As believers we must be cognizant of the words we utter. Many of God’s children are literally living beneath their privilege not because of a lack of talents, gifts or even resources but due to words we speak that negatively prohibit the creative process in our lives that should make us above and not beneath. Proverbs 18:21 reveals that life and death are in the power of the tongue; in this literate society the tongue expands to the things we write, paint and sign. Our words have creative power. I often wonder what would happen if, we as believers, undo “can’t” from of our vocabularies, denounce fear and intimidation from our spirits and, instead of accepting what lies before as is, simply speak life in the deadness of our situations. We are now joint heirs with Christ. Back in May I had a desire to return to school to complete my degree. During that time, my family was experiencing financial constraints because there were other obligations that had to be met. There was not enough money to register for the

RHEMA MAGAZINE: OCT/NOV 2013

two of the three classes I had left. I contemplated waiting for the spring but God spoke to me and said “Speak.” At first I though “this is not going to work,” forgetting that the Creator lives in me. Tuition Reimbursement is available at work, upon the completion of the semester- with the right grades, of course. I remember in June I prayed, outlined my situation and specifically asked God to create another way for me. Unbeknownst to me, the HR department circulated an email introducing a new loan program that would allow staff to apply for the loan to register for classes and upon course completion submit the required grades and be even or pay back. I can produce the grades. The check came in the mail and I am off to school this fall. The way we get back into a position of authority over our affairs is by speaking life. Abraham in Romans 4:17 held on to the promise that he would be the father of many nations, according to what God had spoken, though Sarah’s womb was dead. Through faith he called those things which were not as though they were and was able procreate. In the same manner, you too have creative power to change your atmosphere into one more positive and productive. Speak life today. Danielle K. DAVID

D

avid Harrington Henlon Edwards was born in Montego Bay, Jamaica and moved to the United States at a very young age. He is the younger of two boys for Bishop Stanley and First Lady Claudia Edwards who preside over the Stoughton Street New Testament Church of God in Dorchester, MA, and also serve as District Overseer for the Dorchester District Churches of God. At a tender age David felt God tugging at his heart, and at 10 years old he gave his heart to Jesus. Since then he has continued to grow in his relationship with the Lord. David attributes much of his development in Christ to the early training he received at home from his parents. “In my house prayer and bible reading were very important. Every Wednesday we had to be at Bible Study, Saturdays we had to be up for early morning prayer at 6am, and Sundays we had to be up at 8am for Sunday morning -family devotion. I didn’t always like going to church or waking up early, but that is where I learned how to pray and developed an appetite for God’s word.” David showed great signs that God’s hand was on his life. By the age of 13, David was preaching the word of God in his local church. Yet, he struggled to fully accept God’s calling on his life, because of all he had seen, heard, and experienced as a “PK”. “I told myself that I will not be a Pastor. People often don’t understand the challenges that Pastors go through. Many believe that the kids don’t see or hear, but people often forget that while your father is in the pulpit you’re in the congregation!” For a long time David ran from the call of God, but the more he ran the more he sensed that God was calling him. It was

EDWARDS

evident to others, and prophesy after prophesy was spoken over his life, unknown to others, but known to David they were only confirming what God had already placed in his heart. Finally David fully answered God’s call in 2005 when he founded “Joshua Generation” campus ministry at Newbury College. He later enrolled into Gordon Conwell Theological seminary where he is currently pursuing a Master of Divinity, and is also enrolled in the Church of God School of Ministries, Ministerial Internship Program since receiving his Exhorters License. Since answering God’s call, many doors have been opened for him to preach in other churches, including youth conventions. He currently serves at his home church as the Youth Pastor and Worship Leader, and serves the Dorchester District Churches of God as the District Youth Director. Upon meeting David you will find someone who is friendly, humble, focused, loyal and passionate. He is one who prides himself on being an individual who is always striving to simply, “be better”. David’s greatest desire is to be a reflection of Christ. He believes in a gospel that goes beyond color, creed, or background, and is committed to sharing the gospel of Christ across racial and cultural boundaries. He believes within every child of God lives a power to change the world. “I am extremely grateful that I can play a part in God’s story. My desire is that everything I do in this life will ultimately be for the glory of God. My prayer is, “Lord let my light shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your father which is in heaven.” rhemamagazine.com 12

Victory in the

4th

Quarter By Pastor and Overseer William E Dickerson, Jr. Greater Love Tabernacle

M

any businesses and corporations function on a yearly calendar that is divided quarterly. The fourth quarter is October to December. My spiritual daughter, Michelle Saunders reminded me of a series of sermons which I preached to inspire and encourage people about winning in life. I want to share excerpts with you. Michelle came up with the title "Victory in the Fourth Quarter." Businesses measure their progress, growth and success quarterly based on their upcoming yearly earnings or their successes on how well their businesses performed when compared to the earnings from the last quarter of the previous year. In professional sports for example, basketball and football players compete in games which have four quarters each. Therefore a team can be losing up until the fourth quarter but come back and win the game. In life we don't need to focus on the negative things which have transpired because what happens in the future is more important than what happened in the past. Your victory concerning finishing this year is more important than how you started out this year. As a child of God you are destined to win and you must always think as a winner. I John 5:4 states, "this is the victory that overcomes the world even our faith. Just as businesses make the following year's projections from the fourth quarter's successes, I believe we as kingdom believers should be able to make faith filled declarations from the past year's victories.

RHEMA MAGAZINE: OCT./NOV. 2013

I may not be cognizant of what you had to experience this year but I know that your faith can propel you into an arena whereby you can finish this year on a strong note. Hebrews 10:35 states, "Cast not away therefore your confidence for it will be richly rewarded." I believe the Lord wants to bless his people this year and you must believe that you are going to obtain victory in the fourth quarter. Child of God you might be down right now but you're not out, keep speaking words of victory over your life and remember to walk by faith and not by sight. If you believe that you have not received your breakthrough this year I admonish you to continue to hold on to your faith. The Lord has not forgotten you; victory is imminent as you do the following: 1) Stand on the word of God 2) Pray faith filled prayers without ceasing 3) Speak positive words of victory 4) Walk in sanctification and holiness 5) Give the Lord a prophetic praise for your victory this year. As believers in Jesus Christ we will have challenges but the Lord will give us the victory even when we are at the end of the year. It is my desire to see you maintain the proper mindset of being the victor and not the victim. As you continue to journey through the corridors of life within the fourth quarter of 2013, be strong with the utmost tenacity, integrity and determined faith and you will obtain the victory. rhemamagazine.com 16

Cover Story Pastor Troy Goode RHEMA

Senior Pastor of New Dimension Church Providence,RI

I

n Providence, Rhode Island God’s providence is coming to pass at New Dimension Church. Founded by Troy & Theresa Goode in December 2008, their mission is to bring revival to the church and reformation to the world. According to Pastor Troy “At New Dimension we want to revive people in the church but go beyond revival by equipping people to reform their mountain of culture.” Goode goes on to say “We believe there are mountains of culture that impact every society (religion, education, business, family, media, arts & entertainment, and government) and that God has called his people to be planted in those various mountains. Our goal at NDC is to equip people to seek after, be conscious of, and live from the presence of God then reform their respective mountain of culture from that spiritual reality. Back in November of 2007, Troy heard the Lord tell him to build a church that carried His vision and His heart. He knew that it would not be enough to build a large church with a ministry that touched the nations and reformed society but he would also have to create a culture where everyone felt loved and significant. “We have prided ourselves on being a church where healing from all sorts of past hurts can take place. It’s a place where you get to rediscover God and His true love for you. Out of this healing, real relationship with the Father is

RHEMA MAGAZINE: OCT/NOV 2013

built and vision is restored.” At New Dimension extravagant worship happens weekly with flagging, dancing, spoken word and even live art being created on stage. “Providence is known as the ‘Creative Arts Capital’ and we’ve been wonderfully surprised by how the arts community has gravitated towards our ministry. The world famous Rhode Island School of Design (R.I.S.D.) is around the corner and many of its students attend our church. We’ve simply incorporated their gifts into how we worship God. I am most excited about ‘Nightlight.’ It’s really a night of artistic expression where young adults from all over New England gather to celebrate God through the arts. We created it to be a complete right brain experience and it’s been so incredible to see the lives that have been changed because of it.” By their own admission, Troy & Theresa have been greatly influenced by the famous Toronto Outpouring of the early nineties and call Dr. Che Ahn, the leader of Harvest International Ministries, their spiritual father. Prayers for divine healing and prophecy are a common occurrence at NDC. According to Pastor Troy “We just believe that Jesus is the same yesterday, today, and forever and that He wants us to heal and deliver in the same way that He did when He was on Earth. For us the supernatural is most natural.” Often times New Dimension’s meetings are marked by people shaking, crying, laughing, or simply laying on the floor. When asked about the manifestarhemamagazine.com 20

RHEMA MAGAZINE: Cover Story

tions Goode says “We really don’t focus on those manifestations, all we try to do is invite the Holy Spirit to come and then release our people to express whatever they feel when He touches them. I know some people are afraid of manifestations because of how they can lend disorder to a service but our attitude is that we’re more afraid of not having the Holy Spirit come than we are of having to clean up a few messes here and there. No one is encouraged to do anything other than to allow the Holy Spirit to interact with them. For us the evidence is found in the fruit of those encounters and not the initial manifestations. We’re more excited when a person get’s off the ground after shaking for several minutes that he arises with an ability to forgive, or a new idea for their business, or a physical healing.” Troy & Theresa emphatically say they don’t want to stop with just physical healings. According to their vision they want to see healing emotionally, economically, socially, and culturally as well. Providence as a city has sixty-six languages that are spoken so naturally New Dimension is a multi-cultural church. They even have a Spanish service every Sunday. One of the more unique features of NDC is their small group ministry. They have two types of small groups. One set of groups is called “Healing Homes” that meets two Sunday’s per month. Pastor Troy actually encourages these groups to stay at home and lead bible studies on Sunday mornings from their living rooms so people can invite their unchurched friends and loved ones into settings easier for them to digest. The other set of groups are called “One To One Groups.” These are small groups that meet during the week around shared interest. They even have a group that comes together to cook and share recipes. According to Pastor Troy, “at NDC people not only “come” to church but they “do” church.” They also serve as the New England Regional site for Wagner Leadership Institute (wagnerleadership.org) where students can obtain diplomas in practical ministry at an undergrad, masters, and doctoral level and three RHEMA MAGAZINE: OCT/NOV 2013

times a year they lead Father’s Heart Schools. Father’s Heart Schools are week long inner-healing intensive courses that focus on dealing with father and mother wounds people often carry. Almost from its inception New Dimension Church has been a part of the Harvest International Ministry (Harvestim.org) network which has afforded Troy & Theresa the opportunity to take their message of revival and reformation to the nations. “When we met Che and the H.I.M. family we felt an instant connection. His experiences in the Toronto outpouring, building HRock church, and global influence were just what we needed to give us guidance. He’s more than our spiritual father; he’s been a real friend.” In June 2013, Che Ahn, Dr. Peter Wagner, Bill Johnson, and Bishop Joseph Garlington saw fit to lay hands on Troy & Theresa because of their work beyond their own local church and commissioned them as Apostles. Currently the couple is formalizing their own apostolic network to be unveiled in 2014 while giving oversight to several ministries, businesses, and churches all over the world. Pastor Theresa is a woman with a heart for the nations’ orphans. She started a foundation, “You Look like Me,” that focuses on bringing the tangible expression of God’s love to the least fortunate. Having executed radical generosity in places such as India, Zambia and Uganda, the whole world will soon have a chance to experience God in a way that no other missionary has displayed. What Pastors Troy and Theresa Goode have created in New Dimension Church is a place where there is tremendous freedom in God. They teach their people about relationship with God, not traditional religion. That freedom is displayed whether it’s through the Sunday morning celebrations, the arts, small groups, or schools. You can experience what is happening at New Dimension Church Sundays at 9am, 11:30am or 3pm (en Español). True Value!

One day at work, one of my massage clients was talking about the challenges of her business. So I began to pour into her ideas and concepts that would improve it. As we were talking I said, “I’m giving you all this information for free.” She responded “we’re just talking”; to which I replied, “no, this is a life coaching session for which I charge money, I’m doing this because I need the practice.” I stated that because the knowledge that she was getting was as the result of schooling, massive reading and trials and error for which I paid a serious cost. She doubled her tip. One of the biggest mistakes people make in relationships is that they do not understand and appreciate each other’s value. The Women’s Liberation Movement created in the 1960’s, was as a result of women wanting to be recognized as more than just mothers and housewives. Today, women are now lawyers, doctors, entrepreneurs, teachers and a plethora of other great professions. This is not to take away from the role of the housewife, which is a full time job in itself that is undervalued. Regrettably, I did not value and appreciate my mother’s role as much as I should until I became a parent.

“I used to walk into a building intimated because I was the only black man there. Now I walk into any building confident because I am the only black man there.” - Unlock Your Greatness blessings”. Everyone is not worthy of blessings because everyone does not honor greatness when it is in their midst. This is why He further said, “If they receive you, give them your blessings, if not take your blessings with you and judgment will fall on them.” These instructions were vital to their ministry. If you only look to material things as your worth, you will miss the greater glory as most do. God hides some of His most precious gifts in people that seem average or unworthy so that we will look deeper into hearts of people and see them and their potential. Craig Oliver laments that the “value of one presence is often determined by their absence.” Do not let that happen to you; look deeper and see peoples’ true value.

Psalm 91 Safety of Abiding in the Presence of God

He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High Shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.

9 Because you have made the Lord, who is my refuge, Even the Most High, your dwelling place,

2 I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress; My God, in Him I will trust.”

10 No evil shall befall you, Nor shall any plague come near your dwelling;

3 Surely He shall deliver you from the snare of the fowler And from the perilous pestilence.

11 For He shall give His angels charge over you, To keep you in all your ways.

4 He shall cover you with His feathers, And under His wings you shall take refuge; His truth shall be your shield and buckler.

12 In their hands they shall bear you up, Lest you dash your foot against a stone.

5 You shall not be afraid of the terror by night, Nor of the arrow that flies by day,

13 You shall tread upon the lion and the cobra, The young lion and the serpent you shall trample underfoot.

6 Nor of the pestilence that walks in darkness, Nor of the destruction that lays waste at noonday.

14 “Because he has set his love upon Me, therefore I will deliver him; I will set him on high, because he has known My name.

7 A thousand may fall at your side, And ten thousand at your right hand; But it shall not come near you.

15 He shall call upon Me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him and honor him.

8 Only with your eyes shall you look, And see the reward of the wicked.

16 With long life I will satisfy him, And show him My salvation.”
