Common Winter Illnesses by Dacie Gayle W

inter can be a very fun time for many. Holidays such as Christmas, Hanukkah and Kwanzaa bring gift

giving and cheer. Activities like snowball fights, building snowmen and sledding invite us all to have fun together. But the cold air that winter brings can often times make us, especially children, sick. Here are two common Winter Illnesses and ways to prevent them. Take heed so that you and your children spend more time having fun and less time being ill. Respiratory Syncytial Virus Infection Respiratory Syncytial Virus or RSV is a viral infection that infects the lungs and breathing airways. Untreated RSV can lead to an array of diseases from the common cold to Pneumonia. The development of RSV into another illness is more common in young children and the elderly. Young children are also more likely to be hospitalized because of RSV. Symptoms of RSV are nasal congestion, coughing, wheezing and fever. While there is no specific treatment for RSV, all of its symptoms are treatable. RSV is a contagious infection and therefore hand washing is encouraged when dealing with anyone who has the infection. Adults who are suffering from the Common Cold should not come into contact with young children in order to prevent children from being exposed to RSV. Strep Throat Strep Throat is a bacterial virus caused by the streptococcal bacteria. Strep infects the throat and tonsils causing patients to have a sore irritated throat. When suffering from a sore throat, many people jump to the conclusion that they have been infected with strep. But, it should be known that strep is only the cause of approximately 15 to 25 percent of sore throats; many others are caused by the common cold and respiratory viruses. Symptoms of Strep Throat are a sore throat, pain when one swallows, a fever over 101o F, swollen tonsils and white or yellow spots at the back of one’s throat. In order to diagnose strep a rapid strep test is done. In rare cases a throat culture may be performed. Antibiotics are most commonly used to treat Strep Throat. Strep is a contagious disease so caution is advised when dealing with those who have been infected.

A I

have never seen an angel, but I have experienced their ministry. The saying is true: nothing feels

like Jesus, there is a glorious aroma that fills a room when Jesus enters it. Hebrews 13 verse 2 reminds us “be careful not entertain strangers for some have entertain angels unaware. ” Only eternity will reveal the many times angels that were sent on our behalf.

It was early 2011 my friend asked me to accompany her to a youth event. En route she asked if I had cash on me, I searched my bag and realized I did not have my purse. I figured it was at home. When she dropped me home, I ran in the house, picked up another bag assuming my purse was in it and ran off to pick up groceries for Sunday’s dinner. When the last item was scanned I reached in my bag, only to discover there was no purse. A lady at church testified the past Sunday that someone paid for her groceries because she left her purse, well no one paid for my groceries. In fact the look on the lady’s face behind me was like –“she can not be serious, can she hurry up.” At this point I was panicking as I retraced my steps in my mind. I called work to see if it might be there, I was told it was not there. Then my coworker said call Wild Willy’s, we had taken some students to eat there the Friday night, so he gave me the number. Immediately I called and the owner told me after I identified myself that it was there. I felt relieved. Monday, on my way to work I stopped by Wild Willy’s to pick up my purse and what happened next changed my life. I walked in and asked for the owner, I identified myself he replied “you are here for your purse”, I said “yes.” He told me on Friday night a man gave it to him. I asked him if the man comes in all the time, he replied “he had never seen the man before.” I inquired more because I wanted to leave a gift card for this person. He insisted that he has not seen him before. So I walked out to work. I felt dissatisfied, so on Wednesday I walked in again and told the owner I was going to leave the gift card, he said “here is what I did not tell you. On Friday night when the man walked in, he was well dressed and he had a distinguished look in his eyes”, he said “I have never seen anyone like this before.” The man handed him the purse and walked out. He said “because I know people will reward individuals who find their lost items, immediately I ran out to ask him his name”, he said it was seconds, he looked up and down the street and the man was no where to be found. He disappeared. He even said no car pulled out of the parking lot. If you visit that Wild Willy’s location in Watertown, there is no way he could have walked that fast without notice. He mentioned for the entire night it puzzled him, he even went home and told his wife. Immediately I said to him, “it was an angel” and his response was “I believe.” Again, I walked up the hill to work, thanking God for sending an angel. I went back to the owner weeks later; he still hasn’t seen the man. Are not angels ministering Spirit to them which are the heirs of salvation?

Pastor Ricky GRANT JR.

M

y name is Ricky Grant Jr. I currently serve as the Lead Pastor for Rescued Church Boston. As a teenager, I was the typical urban kid. I loved basketball, Hip-Hop, and my girlfriend Sharon, who I eventually married. At the age of fifteen, God began to birth a vision in my heart to preach the Gospel, showing me stadiums of people to whom I was preaching. I didn't understand why God wanted another preacher. I would ask Him, "Lord, don't you have enough preachers? Why do you want me?" For the next 15 years God prepared me to preach the Gospel. As Jesus and I became closer, everything in my life seemed to be falling apart. My parents’ marriage was ending and I struggled through the pain I felt. Over the next decade, I struggled in my walk with Christ, my marriage and my call. There were days when I thought I would never fulfill the call God gave me. In October 2012, the Lord spoke to my heart about launching a church in Boston. I spoke with Sharon and our two daughters, we were all in agreement and I was ecstatic. I prayed for a team of leaders that loved Jesus and His people, which the Lord provided.

On September 8, 2013, we officially launched Rescued Church Boston inside the Blue Hills Boys and Girls Club located on Talbot Avenue in Dorchester, MA. We have seen God's faithfulness throughout the duration of this process. We launched the church with 35 people and we are now averaging 120 people per Sunday in just 3 months. At Rescued, we truly exist to do 3 things: 1. Live Jesus centered lives 2. Live in community with other believers 3. Live Missional lives expressing the love of Christ in word and deed. We believe the launching of Rescued is the beginning of a movement. It’s a movement that points towards and glorifies God the Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. Please check us out on the web (RescuedChurchBoston.org) and be sure to visit us on Sundays at 11am at the Blue Hills Boys and Girls Club in Dorchester. God Bless, Rick

New Year's Resolution

P

By Pastor and Overseer William E Dickerson, Jr. Greater Love Tabernacle

Pressing forward to the year 2014, many people within and outside the church community will be considering New Year's resolutions. However, sometimes New Year's resolutions can be too unrealistic or the inconsistencies with one’s natural lifestyle make them a challenge to keep. Personally I do not make them because often times once made; they are too easily broken. I instead focus on reaching goals, which I believe is much healthier. In addition, the results are measurable and produce a better sense of accomplishment. As Christians we should endeavor to commit to goals within these main areas: 1) Spiritual Matters: Those things which will enhance our relationship with the Lord such as studying the word, praying, fasting and living a holy and productive life. 2) Family Matters: We should focus on goals for our families. Married people need to work on getting closer to one another. Parents should focus on becoming more intimately involved in the lives of their children. 3) Personal Matters: We should always have individual goals such as obtaining more education, weight loss or weight gain or improving on interpersonal relationships. 4) Business Matters: We need to look at ways we can improve in business development. Should we increase in certain areas or downsize? What investments or strategies can we implement to become more business minded? Years ago I heard a preacher say that vision should be SMART. S.M.A.R.T is simply an acronym for: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Timely. If we focus on our goals being S.M.A.R.T, we will neither overextend nor frustrate ourselves. On the contrary, we will be inspired by greater milestones of victory experienced throughout the New Year. If we should find ourselves falling short of attaining a goal, the first instinct ought to be to keep trying and with prayerful and faith-filled expectancy begin to see ourselves on top in that area. Failure is not falling and getting back up; it is falling and staying down. We must continue to keep a positive mental attitude and always view ourselves as winners. 1 John 5:4 states, "For everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that overcomes the world even our faith". Giving up is not an option when we have faith, because our success is contingent upon the God factor and not our own natural abilities. Yes the Lord will give us strength, wisdom and the guidance to obtain our goals. Therefore, let’s embrace the New Year with balance, purpose and discipline. The year 2014 will be a year full of challenges, yet tremendous victories too. We should always be optimistic and have an unrelenting determination to please the Lord, serve our families, discipline ourselves in holiness and strive to excel in business. If you keep your focus, I believe that 2014 will be your year of total victory and failure will not be an option. I resolve to achieve set aspirations in life and I pray that you will surpass accomplishing yours as well. RHEMA MAGAZINE: JAN/FEB 2014

Nelson Mandela: The Passing of a Great, yet Gentle Human Being By: Omega Roberts

I

t was July 24, 1991, on a cool and breezy evening in Kingston, Jamaica. I was six years old and pushing my way through the crowd at the National Stadium in an effort to glimpse the man whom the world had come to know as the anti-apartheid hero. I was touched and amazed by the energy and love at the stadium that day. The stadium was packed to capacity with people from all walks of life who like myself, were determined to see a man who had devoted his life to improving the lives of others. This was an indelible experience and it further motivated me to learn more about Nelson Mandela and his ďŹ ght for freedom. Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela was born on July 18, 1918, to Nonqaphi Nosekeni and RHEMA MAGAZINE: JAN/FEB 2014

Nkosi Mphakanyiswa. His father was a chief of a tribe called Thembu. However, Mandela’s lofty birth did not exclude him from racial discrimination, which existed in South Africa since Europeans settled there. At the age of 18, Mandela began his studies for a Bachelors of Arts Degree at the University College of Fort Hare. Expelled for participating in an anti-discriminatory protest, he did not complete his degree there. Nevertheless, Mandela continued his degree at the University of Witwatersrand where he eventually obtained his law degree. During his studies at Witwatersrand, Mandela was determined to spend as much time as necessary ďŹ ghting for racial equality, but it would not be an easy campaign. Although the majority of South Africans were black, Whites ran the government and strictly enforced apartheid laws. These laws divided South Africans by race and determined where members of each group could live, work, and go to school. Social events and public facilities were segregated by race. Under apartheid, non-whites were denied many of the rights that whites enjoyed, including participation in the government. Mandela and many other anti-apartheid activists risked their lives or their freedom to combat these racist laws.

In the early 1900s, black leaders formed the African National Congress (ANC), an organization that worked for political change. In 1944 Mandela eagerly joined the ANC and soon became a prominent member. As a member of the ANC, he spent years fighting for equal rights in South Africa. In 1960, the government banned all ANC activities. Mandela, however, continued to fight against apartheid and was arrested again in 1964. This time Mandela was arrested for treason and was sentenced to life imprisonment. After the trial, Mandela stated, “I have fought against white domination, and I have fought against black domination. I have cherished the ideal of a democratic and free society in which all persons live together in harmony and with equal opportunities. It is an ideal, which I hope to live for and to achieve. But if needs be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die”. Creating a democratic society where all citizens have access to the same rights and opportunities was a cause that Mandela was willing to die for. Consequently, Mandela's struggle drew attention to apartheid in South Africa. As Mandela sat in prison, he became a symbol of resistance to apartheid, and leaders around the world demanded his release.

willing to work with Mandela to end apartheid. For their efforts, Mandela and President F.W. de Klerk were awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993. Now that apartheid had been outlawed, blacks were free to vote and run for office. On May 2, 1994, Mandela made history by becoming South Africa's first black president. While in office, he helped create a new constitution that guaranteed rights and freedom for all. He also worked to create jobs and improve housing and healthcare. Mandela's presidency ended in 1999, but his legacy will live forever. He changed life in South Africa and continues to be an inspiration to people around the world. As we continue to celebrate the life and works of Nelson Mandela, it is important to remember that he was a man who stood firm in his devotion to democracy, equality and learning. Despite the hardships he endured, he never combated racism with racism. His life has been an inspiration to all who are oppressed and marginalized. Pastor Walker shepherds a growing and multi-cultural flock of members varying in age, race and socio-economic backgrounds. Born and raised in Brooklyn in the tumultuous Fort Greene public housing projects, he has risen to build and lead one of the greatest ministries in the Northeast. Love Fellowship Tabernacle was birthed in November 1993, located at 2425 Pacific Street. The cradle of the Tabernacle’s humble beginnings began with only eight members. The need for souls to be saved was always a priority on the heart of Pastor Walker; so on Easter Sunday 1996 Love Fellowship Tabernacle relocated to 464 Liberty Avenue. What had begun with only eight members had quickly blossomed to over 1,000 members. The vision God gave to Pastor Walker was founded on the three “P’s:” Prayer, Preaching and Praise. As he led the people of God into prayer and praise, he labored diligently in the preaching of the gospel to ensure that people of all ages received Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. His ability to motivate, inspire and empower through the Word of God drew people from all walks of life to the Tuesday night prayer and Bible study, now known as the “Prayer Capital of New York City.” Presently, Pastor Walker and the rhemamagazine.com 20

Build don’t Burn

R

“What great accomplishments we’d have in the world if everybody had done what they intended to do.” – Frank Clark

Rome wasn’t built in a day and neither are great relationships and marriages. Yet, when trouble comes in our relationships, we run. The slightest bit of pain and chaos, we give up. The problem with that is we are sometimes running away from what we are supposed to be building. We cannot have an illustrious testimony if we keep failing our elementary tests. How can you build anything great with someone if every few years you are introducing a new mate? The time that it takes to build with someone new, we could have been building with the ex if we exhibited more love, patience and understanding. All the greatness that we admire today- from churches, businesses to relationships, have all stood the test of time; which basically means they learned how to work together because they recognize that the overall purpose is greater than the individual agenda. I saw En Vogue in concert; it was their 20th year anniversary and the male group Silk had opened up for them. They obviously had their differences but they overcame them and look at the result. Selfishness will hinder ones purpose, selfishness doesn’t see potential. It hurts relationships because it focuses on the offense instead of the joy the relationship can bring. Selfishness also operates in fear; it will quickly find reasons to not start a relationship/marriage because of the fear of entering the land of the unknown.

When quite possibly, it could turn out to be the most incredible thing you’ve ever experienced. It’s dangerous to burn the bridge before you build it; chances are it could lead to a great friendship or business connection instead of wondering what might have been. However, you will never have anything great if you cannot get comfortable with that which is uncomfortable. This is how greatness is birthed. If we’re going to be serious about building long lasting marriages and businesses, then it would make sense to seek the counsel of those who have had successful marriages and businesses. While mentorship is a lost art, Proverbs says “he who walks with the wise grows wise.” The best way to burn bridges is to not listen to wise counsel. This is fear of being exposed; which is pride and God hates pride. Fear kills potential and deletes faith, but we are called to live by faith. Therefore, let us begin to look at people through God’s eyes, that way we won’t continue to burn our bridges, instead we will build them. By David Carruthers, Author, TV Host, Speaker

Psalm 19 The Perfect Revelation of the Lord

1 The heavens declare the glory of God; And the firmament shows His handiwork. 2 Day unto day utters speech, And night unto night reveals knowledge. 3 There is no speech nor language Where their voice is not heard. 4 Their line has gone out through all the earth, And their words to the end of the world. In them He has set a tabernacle for the sun, 5 Which is like a bridegroom coming out of his chamber, And rejoices like a strong man to run its race. 6 Its rising is from one end of heaven, And its circuit to the other end; And there is nothing hidden from its heat. 7 The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul; The testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple;

9 The fear of the Lord is clean, enduring forever; The judgments of the Lord are true and righteous altogether. 10 More to be desired are they than gold, Yea, than much fine gold; Sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb. 11 Moreover by them Your servant is warned, And in keeping them there is great reward. 12 Who can understand his errors? Cleanse me from secret faults. 13 Keep back Your servant also from presumptuous sins; Let them not have dominion over me. Then I shall be blameless, And I shall be innocent of great transgression. 14 Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart Be acceptable in Your sight, O Lord, my strength and my Redeemer.

8 The statutes of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart; The commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes; RHEMA MAGAZINE: JAN/FEB 2014
