n Friday, January 17, while students in other Boston Public Schools spent the day learning in the classroom, 520 students and over100 teachers, staff and City Year Corps Members from the Young Achievers Science and Math Pilot School volunteered throughout Mattapan. They volunteered to raise the spirits of hospitalized children, raise awareness for Chinatown’s quest for a library, visit seniors in elder care, and beautify neighborhoods and their school. In honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, President Obama called for citizens to serve within their communities from Friday, January 17 through the MLK holiday on Monday, January 20. To help students answer the President’s call to action, Principal Virginia Chalmers scheduled Friday as a day of service for her school. Each individual volunteered an average of four hours, which was more than 2500 hours of service.

By serving their school and community, Young Achievers students and teachers answered what Dr. King called life’s most persistent and urgent question: “What are you doing for others?” King encouraged his congregation to seek excellence and to do so through service and love.” Similarly, Philippians 2:1-11 tells us that in humility we should count others more significant than ourselves and that we should “look not only to our own interests, but also to the interests of others.” By volunteering, the students, teachers and City Year Corp members at Young Achievers

helped to meet both the physical and less tangible needs of others. The kindergarten students served their community by making cards, necklaces, and blankets for patients at Children's Hospital. The first grade students raised awareness for healthy food issues in Mattapan. The second graders marched from Chinatown to City Hall to raise awareness for a much needed Boston Public Library in Chinatown. The third graders made health kits for Haiti and worked with elders at the Mattapan Haitian Adult Community Center. The fourth grade students performed a dance at the Foley Assisted Living facility in Mattapan and worked with Franklin Park Zoo to make enrichment toys for the Zoo animals. At the Boston Nature Center, fifth grade students helped to upgrade the existing hiking trails. At the school, sixth and seventh grade students painted lockers, expanded the school’s recycling program and worked with City Year Corps members to paint murals for the school building. They also volunteered at the Boston Public School’s science department to re-stock science kits.

Students in 8th grade served as peer leaders and assisted K-5 teachers and students with the day of service activities. Celebrating Dr. King's life through service is a day that the students at Young Achievers will always remember, and hopefully inspire them for many years to come.

The Cross of Destiny By Danielle Grant

Usually when we are on the periphery to fulfill our destinies, we experience the most excruciating pain and betrayal. Yet if we endure the agony the greatness of who we are to become will come bursting through. On the threshold of destiny, Jesus too encountered denial and betrayal by those closest to Him. He was even rejected by His leaders and beaten near death with a flagellum. The journey to greatness consists of accepting one’s purpose and determining to endure hardships in order to reap the rewards. The process is worth the results. As Jesus knelt in prayer at Gethsemane, the burden He would ultimately carry caused such intensity until His sweat became as drops of blood. Like many of us, He too asked for the load to be lifted, and wrestled, according to Matthew 26:36-46 twice He asked if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt. It is noteworthy, but Jesus knew His mission was to die for humanity for without the shedding of blood there would be no remission of sin (Hebrews 9:22). As a result, by His shed blood He fulfilled the law and released grace. His blood would glue our severed relationship with God; grant healing of sicknesses and diseases. His blood would give us power over the devil. He knew; nevertheless in the state of insurmountable sorrow, He died to the flesh. He first died at Gethsemane in order to endure the brutality at Gabbatha and carry a heavy cross on His lacerated

back with a thorn crown forced into his scalp which irritated the nerves in His head. Finally at Golgotha, He was pierced in the median nerve of His outstretched hands and feet and hung naked with water and blood gushing from His pierced left side. Today, what we go through is certainly unparalleled to Jesus’ suffering, but we can glean from this infallible truth: Jesus was fully God, He could not die from the external circumstances but as God in flesh, he wanted to ransom our sin while being able to be touched with the feelings of our infirmities (Hebrew 4:15) He died from His own will. We too, whenever confronted with life’s tempest must be prepared to die to our own volition on the pathway to destiny as He did. D.L. Moody 19th Century Evangelist said “After we have made our requests known to Him, our language should be “thy will be done.” We will not reach the height of greatness if our minds are not made up and our wills prostrated. Jesus reached greatness when He allowed His will to be taken, but when He was lifted up from the earth, “He draws all man” (John 12:32) and when He rose on that day from the grave, He conquered death so we could have life and His Spirit. Therefore, when you see yourself getting closer to accomplishing your aspirations, and God’s vision for your life, all of hell will try to pull out all the stops. Families and friends may disown and abandon you, but know if you hurdle over and press through the impact you will have on others will be worth it.

Mr. Lopes is the owner of George Lopes Funeral Home located at 821 Cummins HWY., Mattapan, MA, which he opened in 2013. He has been a funeral director for over 16 years in the city of Boston and surrounding cities and towns in Massachusetts. We sat with Mr. Lopes to see where his plans and visions are for the City of Boston and the funeral profession. Q: Good afternoon Mr. Lopes, you recently opened a funeral home in Mattapan, we know that there is not too many African-American owned funeral homes in Boston, what made you decide to take that step? A: Good Afternoon, it actually makes one year this month of March that I purchased the building once owned by the Shield's family. Within this year I was called to serve over 100 families, and that is what it means to me, being able to help when called upon. Q: You have worked in this profession for over 16 years, have a lot of things changed? A: A lot of things have changed, the culture has changed, the age difference in responsibility has changed so as a funeral director I also have to change. I have given myself to those I was employed under but I had to keep this for myself and that is my spirit. Q: You mentioned spirit? A: Yes, my spirituality is very important to me and to the families that call upon me. In the moment of loss they are looking for comfort, guidance and care. Not business, business, business. Q: What happens when a family does not have enough for a funeral?

A: At my funeral home, everyone will always have enough. I understand that all families are not the same. I serve people who are doctors, lawyers, police officers, store employees and people from all walks of life. Not everyone balances the same check book. I make it a priority to conveniently, professionally, sincerely work within their guidelines, without overcharging or making an overpriced profit. Q: Are there any resources out there to help families? A: Besides keeping my costs low, there are a few city agencies available and we also work with the state under Victims of Crimes. Q: Now that you have completed your first year in business, how do you feel? A: I feel very blessed. I have made my mother proud and now I look to make the community proud of my work and ethics knowing that they have trusted me with their loved one. Q: I have seen your funeral home and it is very beautiful. A: Thank you, I am proud of the changes that I was able to do to satisfy today's changing times. We have included larger chapel spaces, video and TV screens, WiFi and contemporary furniture with colors of serenity. We want families to feel at peace and contentment from the time they walk in and well beyond the disposition. We thank you Mr. Lopes for your time. Mr. Lopes: You are very welcome, the pleasure is humbly mine.

children at their home. On April 6, 2008 we held our first service at the Holiday Inn in Randolph MA. Our mission is to be a spirit filled church which raises up strong bible believing Christians who will embrace their God-given purpose. We endeavor to raise up people who are empowered to bring the life changing Gospel to this dying world through complete healing, deliverance and restoration. The Tabernacle of Praise seeks to offer revival, restoration and renewal to those who are lost and hurting. Very quickly it was apparent that the hand of The Lord was on the TOP Church, just after six months we had to move to accommodate the growth of the members. We moved to the old Good Brothers Ford dealership. Two years later we again had to expand and built a bigger Sanctuary due to souls being saved, healed, delivered and added to the church. Yet again, one year later in January of 2013, we started a second service and again God outgrew that too. Today, our membership has grown to over 500 members. God is using The TOP as a multicultural ministry. He is pulling men and women from many facets of life, from people with white-collar careers to blue-collar workers and people who only knew the street life are coming together with one purpose and that is to glorify God. For a large number of our members The TOP Church is their first church and Pastor and Lady Bynoe are their first Pastors. God is using the TOP Church to be the vehicle to win those overlooked and forgotten by society because of their past decisions, but Pastor and Lady Bynoe know it's not how one starts that matters but how one finishes. We equate the success of our ministry to

PRAYER and to the outstanding PRAISE and WORSHIP lead by Lady Bynoe and her team of worshipers that create an atmosphere for God to be God, and where the Word of God is delivered in such a way that everyone can receive it and apply it to their everyday lives. Lastly, their sensitivity to the Spirit of God makes them highly effective in following the prophetic move of God. The TOP church seeks to communicate God's Word through Evangelism; to incorporate God's Family through Fellowship; to educate God's People through Discipleship; and to demonstrate God's Love through Ministry. The TOP Church is building a 3-Dimensional Church that touches the world for God. For the TOP the 3-Dimensions are: Multicultural Our diversity should resemble Heaven... comprised of all of God's people. Multi-generational The differences in our ages should be a blessing in Ministry to reach even further with the Gospel. Futuristic Leveraging technology to stay on the cutting edge with a fresh way of doing the Kingdom's work. If you would like to meet us at The TOP you can, every Sunday at 8:00a.m. & 10:00 a.m. At 535 South Main Street, Randolph, MA 02368 Why the TOP? Because life is crowded at the bottom

The greatest trick the devil has pulled off is convincing people that he is not real. –The Unusual Suspects

L

By David Carruthers, Author, TV Host, Speaker

“ adies and gentlemen of the Commonwealth, as the prosecutor of this case and with the mounting evidence that I will present to you, I guarantee that you will find the devil guilty of these charges. He has been sinning from the beginning. It was he in the form of a snake that manipulated Eve by lying to her; stating that she would not die if she eats of the tree, immediately after God told her and Adam that they would die if they eat. It was he who filled Saul’s heart with pride, causing him to disobey God’s instructions to kill everything that was evil- but he kept some selected items to show off and sacrifice. It was he who caused King David to sleep with Basheba even though he knew she was married to one of his faithful warriors. He is the slime that came up to God and asked if he could wreck Job’s life by killing all his children, taking his livestock and attacking his physical body to the point where Job said, “curse the day I was born.” I personally have been attacked by his demons. I can recall being tortured in my mind as a teenager asking them to please stop and they answered with this snickering evil laugh and then told me, “we won’t stop, it is our job to torture you.” Demons are literally incapable of mercy and will even attack small children. Satan is the master of deception because he uses influence to subtly break us down. He studies our weakness and then presents them to us when we are most vulnerable. His job is to get into our psyche without us even knowing it. He thrives off of ignorance. He is the world’s most wanted criminal who is not brought to justice many times because people don’t believe him and Christians would rather argue against each other than to cast him out. Jesus himself states that, “he is the father of lies, and disguises himself as angel of light”. This day I release the prayer of warfare. I pray that Christians would awaken to his schemes and devices and realize that his weapons will not prosper because Greater is He that is in us that he that is within the world. I release the power of the Holy Spirit to discern his tactics; that couples would pray against divorce, hate and misunderstanding, so that the love of Christ would abound and be evident for others to see. I pray that we would recognize that one can chase a thousand but two ten thousand. As they read this, they would see that the married couple is a view of how Christ loves the church and that two are better than one. I pray that the power of God would be poured on us like never before and we would fight the good fight of faith and keep the devil out of our homes and minds. He is never to be trusted and giving him an inch of your time is deadly. Therefore based on the evidence that I have just presented to you, I declare him to be GUILTY. “

Genesis 7 The Great Flood

Then the Lord said to Noah, “Come into the ark, you and all your household, because I have seen that you are righteous before Me in this generation. 2 You shall take with you seven each of every clean animal, a male and his female; two each of animals that are unclean, a male and his female; 3 also seven each of birds of the air, male and female, to keep the species alive on the face of all the earth. 4 For after seven more days I will cause it to rain on the earth forty days and forty nights, and I will destroy from the face of the earth all living things that I have made.” 5 And Noah did according to all that the Lord commanded him. 6 Noah was six hundred years old when the floodwaters were on the earth. 7 So Noah, with his sons, his wife, and his sons’ wives, went into the ark because of the waters of the flood. 8 Of clean animals, of animals that are unclean, of birds, and of everything that creeps on the earth, 9 two by two they went into the ark to Noah, male and female, as God had commanded Noah. 10 And it came to pass after seven days that the waters of the flood were on the earth. 11 In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month, on that day all the fountains of the great deep were broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened. 12 And the rain was on the earth forty days and forty nights. 13 On the very same day Noah and Noah’s sons, Shem, Ham, and Japheth, and Noah’s wife and the

three wives of his sons with them, entered the ark— 14 they and every beast after its kind, all cattle after their kind, every creeping thing that creeps on the earth after its kind, and every bird after its kind, every bird of every sort. 15 And they went into the ark to Noah, two by two, of all flesh in which is the breath of life. 16 So those that entered, male and female of all flesh, went in as God had commanded him; and the Lord shut him in. 17 Now the flood was on the earth forty days. The waters increased and lifted up the ark, and it rose high above the earth. 18 The waters prevailed and greatly increased on the earth, and the ark moved about on the surface of the waters. 19 And the waters prevailed exceedingly on the earth, and all the high hills under the whole heaven were covered. 20 The waters prevailed fifteen cubits upward, and the mountains were covered. 21 And all flesh died that moved on the earth: birds and cattle and beasts and every creeping thing that creeps on the earth, and every man. 22 All in whose nostrils was the breath of the spirit[a] of life, all that was on the dry land, died. 23 So He destroyed all living things which were on the face of the ground: both man and cattle, creeping thing and bird of the air. They were destroyed from the earth. Only Noah and those who were with him in the ark remained alive. 24 And the waters prevailed on the earth one hundred and fifty days.
