It is said that parenting is the hardest job one will ever do. We are responsible for another human being from birth to adulthood: and for some of us, even beyond that. It is our duty and obligation to support and encourage the emotional, social, physical and intellectual developmental of our children. We are charged with nurturing, loving, disciplining and guiding this person- which is a job that should not be taken lightly. As with anything, there will be highs and lows. There will be moments when we experience an immense amount of pride and pleasure. However, let us not forget that there are also moments of disappointment and frustration. My personal approach to parenting was to never ever give up on my child. I saw a very bright, intelligent, spirited child and was determined to foster those qualities.

Whether it was an aunt, uncle, cousin, older sibling, teacher or neighbor, that sense of community was extremely visible. It is very evident that times have changed: in some instances not for the better. There are a lot of challenges that parents encounter today that parents decades ago were not faced with. However, I believe that if our core values remain intact, we can overcome those challenges. Of course there are no guarantees because we are dealing with humans with their imperfections and shortcomings. Parents, you are stronger and more influential than you think you are. You are the ultimate role model. You are the first example of a man or woman that your child will see. You have to be conscious of the behaviors you display in your daily lives, because you will shape your children into the adults they will eventually become. I am not talking about being perfect, that is unrealistic: you are going to make mistakes. This does not mean you have failed as a parent. The important thing is to acknowledge those errors and learn from them. Use those opportunities to demonstrate to your children the art of problem solving which is a tool they will need as adults to navigate their lives. Happy Mother’s and Father’s Day from Rhema. Be Blessed!

May and June are the months when specific days are reserved to honor Mothers and Fathers. We heap accolades not only on our biological parents but also on those who have contributed significantly to our upbringing; acting like surrogate parents by being the eyes and ears when parents were not around. I was literally raised by a village: A group of people who did not fail to reprimand, protect and support me as though I was their own child. Valerie Brown RHEMA MAGAZINE: May/June 2014

inancial literacy is “the ability to make informed judgments and effective decisions about the use and management of money.” While most of us understand how money is used to purchase goods and services, many people lack a number of fundamental principles in order to use money to their advantage. This includes saving for retirement or simply understanding how to benefit from sound financial decisions with the resources they already have. Financial education is one of the most important tools you need for everyday life. Whatever your financial goal, there are options available to get you there. Your ability to understand the various financial tools and vehicles is the key. This is where good financial literacy comes in. We live in a day and age where many of us may suffer from the inability to separate our wants from our needs. Making sound financial decisions gives us piece of mind and reduces our stress in order to live healthier and happier lives. A perfect example of a want vs. a need is when a person decides to purchase something that they have always wanted, but truly financially can’t afford. Their desire or want to have that item is greater than their need to have it. The financial decisions you make can affect you for a long, long time. Have you considered your options? What are they? How will it benefit you long term? Life is a series of decisions and what you do now can be the difference later.

RHEMA MAGAZINE: May/June 2014

Have you ever attended a workplace retirement Lunch and Learn Session only to find yourself asking, “What should I do next?” Typically after the session, the questions that you intended to ask will come to you. For example, what is the difference between a front-end load, and a back-end loaded mutual fund? How did the presenter explain the benefit of a mid-cap versus a large-cap fund or stock? What about employer matching? You are not alone. These questions and many more go unasked and sometimes unanswered. Since this affects your personal financial bottom line, you owe it to yourself to find out how to get the correct answers to all of your specific personal, financerelated questions. Many of us have heard of financial advisors, financial planners, insurance agents and stockbrokers. Perhaps equally as important but lesser-known are financial educators, financial education consultants and financial coaches. Financial coaches and education consultants typically work for nonprofit organizations to educate individuals to overcome many obstacles that prevent them from attaining their individual financial goals. As financial educators, we are saying that it is OK to reach out for guidance and assistance in order to ensure that we are working efficiently and effectively towards achieving your American dreams. Melanoma

t is almost that time of the year when the sun begins to shine longer in the day - summer. During the summer, we all enjoy outdoor activities and events, like swimming and barbecuing. It is important that we stay mindful of the dangers of the sun, one being Melanoma. Melanoma is the most dangerous form of skin cancer. It is caused by ultraviolet rays from the sun. Melanoma is curable if it is diagnosed and treated early. Approximately 50,000 to 70,000 new cases of Melanoma are diagnosed each year. Melanoma begins in the melanocytes, or the cells in your body that form the pigment melanin. The amount of melanin in one’s skin cells determines an individual’s skin color. Early warning signs of Melanoma can be found in the formation of moles, although signs may also be seen in other areas such as the eyes or in the intestines. The ABC of signs of Melanoma, commonly seen in moles are:

Asymmetry- If you were to draw a line through a mole on your body and the two halves are not identical; Borders- The borders surrounding the mole are uneven; Color- The mole looks to be different colors, including brown, black, tan, and even blue or red; Diameter- The mole is larger in diameter than Âź of an inch, which is approximately the size of the eraser on an average pencil; Evolving- The mole begins to change in color, shape, definition, or begins to bleed or itch. RHEMA MAGAZINE: May/June 2014

By Dacie Gayle

There are three main types of Melanoma. They are Superficial Spreading, Nodular, and Lentigo Maligno Melanoma. Superficial Spreading Melanoma accounts for 70 percent of all cases. This type of cancer is mainly seen on the legs of women and on the backs of men between the ages of 30 to 50 years old, although it can be seen in different areas and among different age groups. Nodular Melanoma is presented in about 20 percent of melanoma cases and begins as bluish or purple lumps. This type is likely to spread quickly. Lentigo Maligno is seen on the face in the form of large, irregular-shaped freckles. This melanoma takes longer to develop, but can evolve into a dangerous form of the disease. There are four stages of Melanoma. Stages I and II are localized, which means that they are restricted to one area. Stages III and IV are metastasized, which means that the cancer has spread to different parts of the body. Surgery is the primary option for treatment of Melanoma, although immunotherapy is often used during the later stages. Although Melanoma is curable, it is one of the most deadly forms of cancer since it can spread to other parts of the body. Early detection of Melanoma saves lives. So be mindful of your exposure to the sun this summer and see your doctor if you notice any curious spots on your skin. Patients are usually the first to notice the signs of Melanoma, so be safe, careful, and vigilant this summer. Pastor

Concetta Green

A

t Rhema Fellowship Church in Somerville, MA, CONCETTA GREEN serves as Associate Pastor under the leadership of her husband, Senior Pastor, Jaron S. Green. Together, they have served faithfully for five years. When asked to share a few of the biggest lessons learned as a female minister, Pastor Concetta answers candidly, “I can say to women: ‘Toughen up. Be strong. Life brings challenges that become more complex when ministry is involved.” Pastor Concetta encourages women to, “Be objective about your opinions. Sometimes they are wrong and that’s okay!” “And as First Lady,” she adds, “people typically want you to be something they have imagined. Just take time to learn who YOU are and settle in!” When considering diversity, Pastor Concetta suggests, “Embrace people who think and appear to be different than you. There is a world of grace and beauty to be found in diversity. Appreciating color does not mean you have to buy the same types of art; it means that you can respect all types. You can love and accept someone without agreeing on every subject.” On the matter of educated women, Pastor Concetta believes that under no circumstances should women, “dumb themselves down for anyone or anything - especially not in the church. God wants ALL of you – intellect, instinct, and experience. He wants to ignite those elements with the Holy Spirit so that you can shine in your own way!” RHEMA MAGAZINE: May/June 2014

When asked if other pastors’ wives are helpful in the learning process, Pastor Concetta shares, “Searching for a spiritual mentor can be difficult! Keep an open mind and glean everything you can from your surroundings; especially healthy ones with ‘good fruit’. Modern mentorship comes from various sources. One person may be a great preaching example while another may be an amazing marital model. One person may be well known and the other could live downstairs.” Some of Pastor Concetta’s favorite preachers are from Boston, including: “Pastor Paulette Norman, Co-Pastor Susie C. Owens, Pastor Virginia Ward and Pastor Chris Hill are some of THE GREATEST preachers! And Dr. Cynthia James of Dallas, TX is simply mind blowing.” Pastor Concetta believes that women interested in teaching should know two things: “Prayerful study is essential and God is always speaking; we must tune in. Parenting coaches will explain that each child you have is different and must be handled according their nature for the best results. It’s no different in the Kingdom of God. God speaks to us in ways we can understand. Listen and let Him speak through you!” Personal Favorites: “Boundaries” by Dr. Henry Cloud & Dr. John Townsend (book), “Preaching 101 and 202” by Pastor Noel Jones (YouTube), Toastmasters Club (for public speaking) Contact Pastor Concetta Green: concettagreen@gmail.com. rhemamagazine.com 12

from William E. Dickerson, Pastor and Overseer Greater Love Tabernacle Proverbs 31:10 others’ Day is a very special day of the year and one in which all mothers should be honored. Placing value on their importance in deference to what they do for our children is the key. My mother, the late Evangelist Alma Dickerson for example, inundates my heart with joy whenever I think of her. Saintly, supportive, forgiving, and very kind, she was the quintessential mother of all time. She would serve the Lord with gladness, minister to us as children, cook breakfast and dinner for the family and then reach out to those who were less fortunate. On some weekends, my mom would even prepare 200 sandwiches, head out to the areas where people of vice were known to socialize and feed them. Affectionately known as the “Neighborhood Mom,” my mother made up for in Godly wisdom what she lacked from not having in a formal education. Always willing to pick up a book to read, she also helped us with our homework and became a strong advocate for us at school. It didn’t matter how strenuous the task, if it meant meeting the needs of someone else, she was always selfless in pursuit of fulfilling it. The virtuous woman as described by King Lemuel in Proverbs 31 shares qualities which a woman who fears the Lord should possess. In Proverbs 31:10, it starts off with an interrogative: “Who can find a virtuous woman?” The NIV states: “A wife of noble character who can find? She is worth far more than rubies.” To state more eloquently, the value of a quintessential mother and wife is priceless. We cannot therefore compare what she brings to the table to even a rich gem stone. A virtuous woman who fears the Lord will honor her husband; nurture her children; and stand as an example of love and fidelity for other women to follow. Evangelist Alma Dickerson neither achieved educational success nor was she the recipient an award for community service. Nonetheless, her mark on society was great! The former Massachusetts Department Social Services knew Evangelist Dickerson well because in addition to raising six of her own eight children, Evangelist Dickerson was a foster mom to many. Judges knew her intimately because she often stood before them pleading for mercy on behalf of juvenile delinquents. Police officers also knew her due in part to her witnessing among the area prostitutes, pimps, thieves, and drug addicts. Teachers acknowledged her because she spent time at the schools advocating for children in the community. Evangelist Dickerson died and went home to be with the Lord at the young age of 48, but her life and ministry left behind a powerful legacy for me and my siblings to emulate. We need to thank God for natural mothers and spiritual mothers who have impacted our lives over the years. I give great reverence and honor to all mothers who have really been there for their families and for those in the community in regards to showing their loving support. RHEMA MAGAZINE: May/June 2014

Meet Paula

Pastor of New Destiny Christian Center Apopka, Florida

aula White is a pastor, Bible teacher, international evangelist, author, life coach, and popular TV personality. Perhaps more significantly, she is an abuse survivor, humanitarian, mother, and beloved mentor living a real-life Cinderella story. Paula’s humanitarian work garnered awards, including the Rosa Parks Lifetime Achievement Award in 2013, the Impact Leadership Award in 2011, the Humanitarian Award by the Trumpet Award Foundation in 2009, the "Mind, Body, Spirit Award," from the NBA Wives Organization in 2007, and the "Trailblazer Award" by Jesse Jackson and Rainbow Coalition in 2006. The commanding roles Paula fills today are fueled by a few things: the success she’s experienced despite facing adversity, an acute mind acquainted with scripture, and a sensitive heart for the human condition. Known for her profound, empowering Bible teaching, Paula is the host of the nationally syndicated program Paula Today, as seen on TBN, BET, the Word Network, Church Channel, and many others. Her program is shown in over 200 countries, and her powerful message of hope resonates among people from every culture. Today, she is the Senior Pastor of New Destiny Christian Center in Apopka, Florida, a non-denominational church with a multicultural mission whose membership RHEMA MAGAZINE: May/June 2014

Pastor Paula White ranges in the thousands. The core of Paula’s message is “transforming lives, healing hearts, and winning souls.” Her mission is to touch the world with the transforming power of the gospel of Jesus Christ. How did Paula come to be where she is today? Paula White was born into an upper-middle-class family in the bustling town of Tupelo, Mississippi. Her father was the owner of a thriving toy and crafts store. In the early years, their family was happy. The marriage began to fail, though, and after an explosive argument one night between her mother and father, Paula’s father committed suicide. Paula was only five years old. The tragedy threw Paula, her mother, and brother into dire straits. Her mother, now the sole breadwinner, had to work and became an alcoholic. Paula was left with different caregivers while her mother was working. Paula was sexually and physically abused from the ages of seven to thirteen, on different occasions and by different people. Her childhood had become marked by abuse and feelings of abandonment and confusion. rhemamagazine.com 20

Meet Paula As a teenager, Paula experienced deep feelings of shame and rejection. She tried to escape these feelings of shame and rejection by becoming an overachiever in school. She also became a cheerleader and could even do acrobatic stunts! Paula won the approval of all her teachers, and she was driven and ambitious. At age 18, Paula was introduced to the Gospel, and became a Christian. The crushing weight of shame and rejection she had carried as long as she could remember were gone. Paula held the Bible and thought, “God, I don’t know you, and I don’t even know myself. But I know all the answers are in this book.” Her life began to transform as she studied the Bible and became involved in a local church. Then, she had a vision that she was to preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ around the world. Paula found that she was moved when she saw people who were hurting. She deeply yearned to touch those who were most in need. Her roots as a humanitarian started in the late 1980s when she had an opportunity to minister in Washington, D.C. By the early 1990s, she was in post-riot Los Angeles, sharing Jesus Christ with children whose neighborhoods were the hardest hit by violence. In 1991, Paula co-founded Without Walls International Church in Tampa, Florida, a ministry that went on to touch the lives of hundreds of thousands of people. In 2001, Paula founded Paula White Media Ministry to reach the world with the core message God had given her – the message of “transforming lives, healing hearts, and RHEMA MAGAZINE: May/June 2014

winning souls.” Paula White Ministries had become definite in form and began to grow exponentially. Paula White Ministries is passionately devoted to outreach. The ministry’s first efforts were supporting the local community, holding feedings and giveaways, and vigorously seeking innovative ways to reach those in need. When we look at Paula White Ministries today, we see the same efforts taking place, together with global missions, which include supporting local and international in collaboration with other organizations. Just hours after the devastating January 2010 earthquake in Haiti, Paula White Ministries worked through the orphanage in Haiti to provide food, clean water, and clothing, later providing tents as the masses continued to arrive during the rainy season, looking for help and shelter. Paula White Ministries provided food, clean water, clothing, toiletries and transportation in the wake of Hurricane Katrina and supported ongoing rebuilding efforts. The ministry also provides ongoing, substantial support to many orphanages globally and is a robust supporter of Feed the Children and Churches Helping Churches. Paula White was on the board for Safe Horizons, a non-profit organization advocating for women and children who are victims of domestic abuse. She partnered with Harlem’s Northside Center for Child Development, supporting their efforts to provide social services to underprivileged children and families. As Paula White would say, “Look what God has done!” rhemamagazine.com 21

M

y perfect woman is about five feet, six inches tall with an hourglass figure, and the beauty of Halle Berry, but with a darker complexion. She is a prayer warrior. She loves to cook and do all the things I love to do and is massively attentive to my needs. Here is the problem: she doesn’t exist. There are so many people who run after success, eluding the very things that they are chasing after. One must be very careful. God gives us amazing opportunities, but we fail to see them because we have pre-existing views of what they already look like and miss the real thing. For example, I honestly believe everyone gets a couple of chances to meet Mr. or Mrs. Right. However, you don’t get eight. To acquire and maintain success, it is vital that we begin to get over our images and deal with reality. Dealing with reality means that you must recognize your weaknesses and baggage that you bring to a relationship. There are too many people that have sky-high expectations, but give on a valley level. People who chase delusions are actually in pain, thus the reason for the chase. They feel if they acquire certain things and prestige, they will be successful, and the success will dull the pain. However, this is a temporary fix that usually backfires, because it plunges one further into the delusion, so, when it resurfaces, it comes back

RHEMA MAGAZINE: May/June 2014

harder. This means that one actually creates more pain by not dealing with the previous pain. Delusional people also lie a lot. They do this to protect their images, which cover up their weaknesses. One of the biggest problems with chasing delusions is that the chase is a pursuit of a never-ending lie that keeps you from dealing with the giant within. Carl Jung said, “He who looks outside, dreams. He who looks inside, awakens.” God has no problem giving us an abundance of things, but His kingdom has to be priority. The book of James talks about asking for blessings and not getting them because the motives were wrong. God is big on motives. He will not give you things if you use them to signify success instead of Him. Tye Tribbett sings a beautiful song on his “Stand Up” CD entitled, “Chasing after You.” This song speaks about falling in love with Jesus. I never thought that I would be in a place where I was excited about God and wanted to know Him more and more. This is an amazing thing. God really is a relational God who desires to give us more than we can ask or think. I pray that whatever ails you or is trying to put you into a state of delusion would be diminished so that you can know the fullness of God’s glory and the beauty of His presence. He has already chased us. Now it is our turn to chase Him. By David Carruthers, Author, TV Host, Speaker

16 In Your name they rejoice all day long, And in Your righteousness they are exalted. 17 For You are the glory of their strength, And in Your favor our horn is exalted. 18 For our shield belongs to the Lord, And our king to the Holy One of Israel. 19 Then You spoke in a vision to Your holy one,[b] And said: “I have given help to one who is mighty; I have exalted one chosen from the people. 20 I have found My servant David; With My holy oil I have anointed him, 21 With whom My hand shall be established; Also My arm shall strengthen him. 22 The enemy shall not outwit him, Nor the son of wickedness afflict him. 23 I will beat down his foes before his face, And plague those who hate him. 24 “But My faithfulness and My mercy shall be with him, And in My name his horn shall be exalted. 25 Also I will set his hand over the sea, And his right hand over the rivers. 28 My mercy I will keep for him forever, And My covenant shall stand firm with him. 29 His seed also I will make to endure forever, And his throne as the days of heaven. 30 “If his sons forsake My law And do not walk in My judgments, 31 If they break My statutes And do not keep My commandments, 32 Then I will punish their transgression with the rod, And their iniquity with stripes. 33 Nevertheless My lovingkindness I will not utterly take from him, Nor allow My faithfulness to fail. 34 My covenant I will not break, Nor alter the word that has gone out of My lips. 35 Once I have sworn by My holiness; I will not lie to David: 36 His seed shall endure forever, And his throne as the sun before Me; 37 It shall be established forever like the moon, Even like the faithful witness in the sky.” Selah rhemamagazine.com 34
