am an avid track and field fan. So to say I am ecstatic to watch the staging of the 2015 World Athletic Championship in Beijing, China would be an understatement. I was especially excited to see Jamaican sprint king and world-record holder Usain Bolt defend his title and continue his dominance of the 100 meter race. This win would cement him in the history books as the greatest sprinter ever. Bolt gave his fans quite a scare when he stumbled from the blocks in his semi-final race. However, he regained his composure and won that race, booking his spot in the finals. His stumble caused many to doubt whether he would be able to pull off the historic win. But, he silenced all the doubters with a title-defending win.

that we have a race to run: a race that requires us to be steadfast and focused- a race that requires us to trust that God is always able. As Usain Bolt ran his title-defending race, he had thousands of people cheering him on. There were thousands of fans and friends in that stadium, including his parents. There were millions watching from around the world, and for those 10 seconds they cheered. You may not have a stadium full of cheerleaders, but run anyway. Run with confidence. Run with perseverance. Run with patience- knowing that you are surrounded by a great cloud of witnesses cheering you on to victory.

Let us be encouraged by the Godly examples...

We all face obstacles in our everyday lives that cause us to stumble at times. Sometimes, this causes others to judge and to write us off as failures. Subsequently, we also begin to doubt our abilities to rise above our problems. However, we have to regain our composure, see the bigger picture and run to win. Stumbling does not negate the fact RHEMA MAGAZINE: SEPT/OCT 2015

Let us be encouraged by the Godly examples set by those who have victoriously run this race before us.

By Dacie Gayle September is a month that brings about a variety of emotions in many different people. For students and teachers alike, it causes a sense of anxiety and excitement as a new school year begins. For parents and families, immense relief is felt that their children are back into a routine.

Each group has a role in the lives of children. Therefore, it is important to know that September is Child Obesity Awareness Month. As we focus on the new beginning that September brings for children’s academic lives, we should also focus on their physical well-being. According to statistics, about seventeen percent of children from the ages of two to19 in the United States are reported to be obese or overweight. i Childhood obesity is considered an epidemic due to the high number of children at risk for troubling health concerns, such as diabetes, heart disease and stroke. ii

There is no root cause for childhood obesity. Instead there are factors that lead to obesity based on the individuals. Childhood obesity is defined as when a child is well above the healthy weight for their age and height. iii The major factors that lead to childhood obesity include unhealthy eating patterns and a lack of physical activity. The community environment that a child lives in can also be a factor in their physical health. The higher advertising and lower cost of unhealthy fast foods is also a major contributor. iv In order to keep our children healthy, we should focus on the foods that our children eat and the amount of physical activity in which they partake. Families and caregivers should try to limit the amount of high-calorie snacks and treats that they give to their children. Meals should be fun and healthy. Families can try to be creative and fun with favorite meals by adding vegetables to a favorite meal or dish. Increasing a child’s physical activity time can also be fun. Children can become more social by joining sports teams at school or in their communities. Most community organizations like the YMCA or Boys and Girls Clubs of America offer activities that promote physical activity. Having play dates or gatherings at local parks is also a good idea. Childhood obesity should concern everyone. Children need the assistance, guidance and support of adults in order to battle this epidemic. Our children hold the future in their hands and need to be healthy and happy in order to lead us into success. “Childhood Obesity Facts. Family’s Faith Reaps Rewards by Damola Curtis

Five years ago, Minister Anthony Toombs, wife Nicole and son Jaheem stepped out on faith and left the Boston area for Los Angeles for Jaheem to pursue what they believed to be his destiny call to become an actor and multifaceted entertainer. The result of this faith walk was Jaheem landing many acting roles, including a starring role in Nickelodeon’s “100 Things to Do before High School.” The Toombs family shared with RHEMA Magazine a portion of this faith journey. RM: So, Jaheem, you play Fenwick Frazier on “100 Things to do Before High School.” It airs every Saturday night at 8:30 P.M. on Nickelodeon. How did you land the role? When I read the script for the character Fenwick Frazier, I thought to myself, “He's a lot like me. I totally can see myself playing this role.” I had auditioned and worked for Nick and other networks before landing this role, but I knew it was something special! When I went in to audition, the usual butterflies that I get before auditioning were not there. I actually felt great. It was like God was saying, “It's your time. You got this!” After a series of auditions, call backs, and directors’ meetings, I landed the role of Fenwick Frazier. My mom and I were in the car when we got the phone call. I asked her to pull over and I jumped out the car and ran as fast as I could up and down Santa Monica Boulevard thanking God. It was awesome!

at an early age of what they want to do and who they want to be? First and far most, train your children in the Lord! Invest in their spiritual being first! Listen to your children, find out what they are passionate about and whatever it may be, show them that you are interested and (that) they matter! Learn all that you can about their passion with them. If they want to be a pilot and they know that at age 3, spend time at the airport, travel if you can, find books, read with them to expand their knowledge … most importantly have them write it down and pray over their dreams daily together as a part of your family time. RM: Jaheem, what would you say to other teens about making the right choices to follow what they believe is their God-given destiny, and what more can we look for from you? Simply, your dreams can be your reality. Keep God first and there is nothing you cannot do. It takes a lot of hard work to achieve the dream, but it is possible! Right now, I am working on some music and preparing myself for more film, TV, and movie roles.

RM: Anthony and Nicole, what advice can you give to the parents of children who are sure RHEMA MAGAZINE: SEPT/OCT 2015

The Gospel of the Kingdom BY PASTOR WILLIAM E. DICKERSON, JR.

The Kingdom of God refers to how God moves, operates and governs his way of doing things. In the end, The Kingdom will also come to replace and supersede the kingdom of darkness. – Pastor Dickerson Matthew 3:1-3: “In those days John the Baptist came, preaching in the wilderness of Judea 2 and saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.” 3This is he who was spoken of through the prophet Isaiah: ‘A voice of one calling in the wilderness, ‘Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him.’” – King James Version

atthew 3:4-10 teaches us how John's basic diet was one of locusts and wild honey while his outer adornments were simply of camel’s hair, accompanied by a leather belt for his waist. His stance was one of self-denial with a steady gaze on the things of God alone. Many flocked to him in the desert of Judea and were baptized after confessing and repenting of their sins.

Viewed as a strange prophet because he was not on the preaching circuit or rotation, John defied popularity in order to get into the presence of God. Not once did John the Baptist seek after trends or validation of any sort. His desire was to do what the Father called him to do by preparing hearts to receive Jesus the Christ, the Anointed One. John merely wanted to be effective in ministry by sharing the truth with as many who would hear; repent; receive and follow.

John came announcing that he was making way for Jesus the Christ – the Messiah – and his message was one of repentance and judgment because the kingdom of heaven is at hand. For their part, the Pharisees and Sadducees had little interest in heartfelt repentance, as their confidence was rooted in their lofty pride.

Such is the attitude that I believe the Lord is raising up in ministries today – those ministries with the anointing of John the Baptist who will cry out, “Repent for the kingdom of Heaven is at hand.” It is not too late. We can all share in the gospel of the Kingdom together.

John the Baptist further states in Matthew 3:11 (NIV): “I baptize you with water for repentance. But after me comes one who is more powerful than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.” John simply declares that we are in a dispensation wherein the Holy Spirit is coming in great power and if we don't receive it, there awaits us fiery judgment. Jesus will baptize you with the Holy Spirit, yet hell fire awaits those who reject His call.

Let us pray:

RHEMA MAGAZINE: SEPT/OCT 2015

“Father, I come to you in the name of Jesus, recognizing that Jesus died, was buried, but rose on the third day to take away my sins. I ask Jesus to come into my heart, forgive me of my sins and make me one of your own. Lord, give me the strength to live for you daily as you show me how. I ask this in the name of Jesus.

FRED HAMMOND Music’s Effectiveness Is Key By Michele Saunders

n this upcoming October 29, the multi-city and multi-national Gospel-music, Festival of Praise Tour, featuring Fred Hammond; Pastor Donnie McClurkin; Bishop Hezekiah Walker; Pastor Kim Burrell; Isaac Carree; Jessica Reedy; Zacardi Cortez and comedian Marcus Wiley will stop for one night only at the Wang Theatre |Citi Performing Arts Center in Boston’s theatre district. The evening is sure to be a high time of worship, praise and overall enjoyment as concertgoers celebrate the Lord in a lively atmosphere. It was a privilege for RHEMA Magazine to speak with Fred Hammond about the tour and other topics. Estate Planning and Preparing For Winter Proverbs 30:25: “The ants are a people not strong, yet they prepare their meat in the summer.” – King James Version Health Care Proxy It is always best to have a plan in place for the unexpected. This is true for making sure that you have someone to stand in your stead in the event that you cannot speak up for yourself. An essential part of any estate planning strategy is the formation of a health care proxy. A health care proxy is a legal document that appoints a person of your choosing to make the necessary and pertinent health care decisions for you when you cannot make them on your own due to your medical condition. Various states have differing rules on who can and cannot be your proxy. For example, many states prevent doctors who may have to decide on the method of your health care to be your health care proxy. Your health care proxy conveys your expressed, specific wishes regarding your health care. It is usually signed by two witnesses and is kept on file with your health care provider. It offers clarity to all involved in providing your health care. Preparing for Winter While we are still enjoying the waning residue of the warm summer months, it is best for seniors to begin to prepare now for the winter months. Here are some tips: • Check all of your heating elements like your furnace; thermostat; hot water heater; baseboards, fireplace, etc. to ensure that RHEMA MAGAZINE: SEP/OCT 2015

they are working properly and that there are no potential fire hazards. Have chimneys swept and/or cleaned. Make sure windows and doors are properly and safely insulated. • Make sure that you will be able to have the proper access to affordable heat and electricity before the weather turns really cold. • Are your coats, boots and other outerwear ready for the cold? Do you have the proper clothing to keep warm enough? • Check food supplies and utensils. Are there enough canned, frozen, dried-food goods and water stored and readily available in the event of possible snowstorms? Do you have can openers and other utensils to be able to access this food? • Do you have extra medication and medical supplies handy in the event of heavy snow? • Check batteries in flashlights, electric candles and lanterns and in smoke and carbon-monoxide detectors to ensure that they are working properly. • Do you have an updated list of telephone numbers of family and friends and others, like your health-care provider, pharmacy, transportation, etc., whom you would be able to call in an emergency? While this is not an exhaustive list, these are suggestions to help you get a jumpstart on winter preparation. Family and friends of beloved seniors, please be sure that you assist our seniors with this checklist and sow into them wherever you can. rhemamagazine.com 24

Pastor Kim Burrell Brings Jazz Flavor to Gospel Fest By Michele Saunders

astor Kim Burrell is referred to by some as this generation’s “Ella Fitzgerald” of Gospel music. She initially gained her fame and renown in the relatively new Gospel Jazz music genre. While this expression of gospel music, Gospel Jazz, is a fairly recent phenomenon that has grabbed a great hold of the attention of music aficionados, both Christian and non-Christian, religious and irreligious alike worldwide, Pastor Kim’s success is not a rare occurrence. She has gained her recognition step-by-step; faith-by-faith and by working steadily in and out of season; day-by-day and year-by-year. Pastor Kim, a native of Houston, Texas, is the daughter of Church of God in Christ pastor / musician father and evangelist mother. She sang her first solo at a one year old, with her rendition of the late Andraé Crouch’s “The Hallelujah Praise” with her church’s choir. Pastor Kim brought her testimony of faith and healing to her singing, for as a young girl Pastor Kim was stricken and weakened by double pneumonia. In a 2010 MannaScript interview with MannaScript founder, publisher and writer, Shamerra T. Brown, Pastor Kim details her bout with illness: “Well, from the ages of about 6 to 14, my body was stricken with double pneumonia every, single year and it would last three to five months at a time…My lungs would collapse and they would send me home from the children’s hospital to die,” said Pastor Kim. “But the Lord did heal me after eight years,” she detailed to Ms. Brown. Pastor Kim said that this experience with others, especially growing up in and around ministry helped to shape her sensitivities today. RHEMA MAGAZINE: SEPT/OCT 2015

As a youth, Pastor Kim grew up singing in notable choirs, including the Gospel Music Workshop of America’s Youth Choir, also known as (the late Rev.) James Cleveland’s Kids; Trinity Temple Full Gospel Mass Choir of Dallas; with Kirk Franklin; The Inspirational Sounds Gospel Choir of Houston, Texas; and the Greater Emmanuel COGIC Choir of Houston, Texas with Yolanda Adams. Pastor Kim’s recording career began in 1995 with her debut album, “Try Me Again,” on Texas-based Pearl Records. Pastor Kim’s most recent album (2015), “From a Different Place” can be purchased and downloaded wherever music is sold. During the 20-year duration of Pastor Kim’s recording career, Pastor Kim has garnered the respect and admiration of a cross section of secular-music industry heavyweights, including Stevie Wonder; Chaka Khan; Harry Connick, Jr.; Beyoncé; R. Kelly and the late Whitney Houston. She has also shared the stage with gospel recording industry greats, including Pastor Shirley Caesar; Albertina Walker and Bishop Marvin Winans, to name a few. Pastor Kim has been nominated for and won Grammy Awards and has earned three Stellar Awards and one Dove Award. While her musical accomplishments are unparalleled, mother of son Christian and pastor, Kim Burrell, recognizes that only what you do for Christ will last. In 2010, she founded and now is the Senior Pastor of Love & Liberty Fellowship Church International of Houston with the mission of “building each other to build God’s kingdom.” rhemamagazine.com 27

Improved Financial Relationships By Nicholas T. Josey

ow do well do you manage your personal finances? I ask this question, because it becomes more important when your money-management practices impacts more than just you. Whether married or in a committed partnership, we all must consider whether we are good money managers.

moved toward a more desirable financial course.

It is often said that in today’s society that two incomes are better than one as it relates to personal finances. I often meet with couples that may have opposing views when it comes to personal money- management styles. With differing money- management habits there is an increased likelihood of some discord around a couple’s finances.

Once you have found that special person that you want to share the rest of your life with, I would strongly encourage you to take your time to learn about their spending, saving, and investing habits. Once the two of you are on the same wealth accumulation page, you will significantly increase the likelihood of your long-term relationship or marital success.

Life can be stressful enough before adding the day-to-day concerns of your ability to meet some or all of your financial obligations. I am currently working with a wonderful couple, Joyce and Andrew. They have been married almost 20 years and have two children, Louise, age 7, and James, age 5. As a couple, Joyce and Andrew realized that they needed a financial coach to educate and guide them toward becoming better stewards of their financial resources.

Take a look at the following: savings accounts, investment accounts, insurance policies, retirement accounts, as well as any estate-planning provisions. Next, you will want to discuss any and all outstanding individual debts, student loans, credit cards, or mortgages. You may also want to discuss various contingency plans which are most important to you. With time and the incorporation of mutually productive financial habits, you will be well on your way toward achieving financial success as a team.

Referred by their next-door neighbors, Joyce and Andrew both wanted to meet with me to develop a plan to increase their financial transparency and to begin to work better as a team. With current mortgage payments and college tuition on the horizon, together they learned that great patience and deferred gratification are required as they RHEMA MAGAZINE: SEPT/OCT 2015

PASTOR DONNIE MCCLURKIN AND BISHOP HEZEKIAH WALKER Twin Spiritual Powerhouses BY MICHELE SAUNDERS salm 90:17: “And let the beauty of the LORD our God be upon us: and establish thou the work of our hands upon us; yea, the work of our hands, establish thou it.” - King James Version This scripture aptly applies to both Pastor Donnie McClurkin and Bishop Hezekiah Walker as both are continually busy using their gifts and talents for the work of the Lord. In the midst of giving and sharing with the world their pastoral gifts, they also will share with those in the Boston area their musical talents on October 29 as part of the Festival of Praise Tour. Pastor Donnie McClurkin is Senior Pastor of 3,000member Perfecting Faith Church of Freeport, New York. Bishop Hezekiah Walker is founder and Senior Pastor to over 1,000 congregants of Love Fellowship Tabernacle, both of Brooklyn, New York, and Bensalem, Pennsylvania. Both recording artists have won Grammys, Stellar, BET, Dove, NAACP Image and Soul Train Awards. Both have a heart to win souls to Christ. Both amazing men have withstood and overcome serious challenges to their health in the past. Pastor Donnie overcame leukemia at age 31, while Bishop Hezekiah has the testimony of being fully recovered from paralysis due to a stroke that hit him in 2005. Both have judged singing competitions. Pastor RHEMA MAGAZINE: SEPT/OCT 2015

Donnie currently is cast member and judge for BET’s Sunday Best, while Bishop Hezekiah hosts Choir Fest with the Gospel Music Workshop of America. Pastor Donnie is host to the daily AM “The Donnie McClurkin Show,” which earlier this year garnered the top spot for morning-drive shows in the Philadelphia and New York markets. Both artists’ songs have been effective in winning millions of people to Christ. The song “Every Praise” from Bishop Hezekiah’s latest album, Azuza: The Next Generation can also be credited to miraculously ending a man’s attempt to kidnap a young boy. The young man kept singing the song while in the back seat of a car. The alleged kidnapper could not stand the worship and let the boy go. Pastor Donnie has released his latest offering, Personal Notes, Volume II , a compilation of his inspirational radio show messages on his radio show’s web site, www.donnieradio.com. Bishop Hezekiah is also known as Dr. Hezekiah Walker as he has been bestowed an honorary doctorate from Next Dimension University, an accredited Bible college of Ontario, California. rhemamagazine.com 29

Written by David Carruthers, Author of Kill Your Giants & REACTORS “While we don’t always get what we want, we always get what we choose.” - John Maxwell

hen it comes to the bliss that we want in our relationships, we are always getting practice. Some things are subliminally learned as we observe the relationships we see in our everyday lives. Each time we go out on a date, this is practice. The way we treat our siblings and friends of the opposite sex, that is practice. Do we honor the opposite sex and put our best foot forward or are we constantly holding back waiting for them to do something extraordinary? When someone does something nice for you, do you return the favor or is your attitude one of entitlement? Are you appreciative? The importance of those questions is simply this, you are what you repeatedly do, and what you repeatedly do become your habits. It’s not like you get married and suddenly you become this awesome spouse. Think of it this way, a ring does not make you a wife or husband, your actions do. A ring at best is a symbol of fidelity and commitment.

will help to reveal how you think and how you view relationships: • Did you see a loving relationship with your parents growing up? How did/do you interact with your mother? • How did/do you interact with your father? • How did/do you interact with your siblings? Did you grow up in a single-parent household? All of these questions play a huge factor in our relationships for several reasons. Our parents shape our worlds. We are products of our environment whether we like it or not. The interaction that one has with his or her mother is important because from a male perspective she is the first woman he is introduced to. He will see the world through her eyes. She is one of his primary teachers. It is the same with the father, from a female perspective. Her father is the first man she will love.

Here are a few questions that when answered RHEMA MAGAZINE: SEP/OCT 2015

Job 38 1-24

New King James Version

1 Then the Lord answered Job out of the whirlwind, and said:

its garment, And thick darkness its swaddling band;

2 “Who is this who darkens counsel By words without knowledge?

10 When I fixed My limit for it, And set bars and doors;

18 Have you comprehended the breadth of the earth? Tell Me, if you know all this.

3 Now prepare yourself like a man; I will question you, and you shall answer Me.

11 When I said, ‘This far you may come, but no farther, And here your proud waves must stop!’

19 “Where is the way to the dwelling of light? And darkness, where is its place,
