kelley’s got talent BK students show off their talents BY: RILEY OATMAN Between piano ballads, White Stripes covers, and on-stage backflips, the 2016 Bishop Kelley talent show was definitely lit. On April 28 and 29, over 30 different students performed 21 acts. Other acts included flamenco guitar,

a scene from the musical “Newsies”, and a stand up comedy routine. Brenda Rich shared her comedic thoughts about stress in life. “I wasn’t really nervous about doing my stand-up comedy act,” Rich said. “I just

go through life being myself and people laugh, so it was easy.” Several students were involved in multiple acts. Quinton Hoagland barely had time for costume changes, being in seven different acts.

“This was definitely one of the most rewarding performing experiences I’ve ever had. It was a privilege to work with so many amazingly talented people,” Quinton Hoagland (10) said.

FATHERS KNOW BEST I know that all bodies and ashes (or cremains) should be buried. But what if a family member’s last wish is to have their ashes scattered? Should you do follow their last wish or bury the ashes? All bodies should be respected because they were created by God after his very likeness; therefore, we don’t turn bodies into dust in the wind. Cemetery comes the Latin which means dormitory. A dormitory is where people sleep, as many of you will know when you go off to college. A cemetery is a place for the dead to sleep, waiting to

Chava’n a good time

Student Katherine Patz takes her talents to the big stage. Katherine Patz is carrying on the Bishop Kelley tradition of fine arts throughout the Tulsa community. In April, she starred as Chava in Tulsa Theatre’s production of Fiddler On the Roof. The musical took place at the Williams Theater in the Tulsa Performing Arts Center downtown on weekends between April 15th and April 30th. Katherine has performed with Theatre Tulsa for 6 years, and this was the first time she has had a lead in one of the company’s big season closer musicals. The performance was received very well by the audience and critics.

BKBREEZEWAY.COM

BY ANNA “We got a good review in the Tulsa World. One of my favorite moments in the show was towards the end of the show when Chava gets disowned, there are so many powerful moments of silence where you can just hear people sobbing,” Patz said. Some students may have noticed a change in Katherine’s appearance last month. When she was offered the role, the directors asked her if she would be okay with dying her vibrant red hair to brown. She agreed, so she had to dye it twice this year: once for the promotional photo shoot and once for the performances.

HANISCH She was scared that her new “I’m excited to see the spin color would look unnatural, they put on it and the interbut “A lot of people ended up pretation they take on show,” actually liking it,” Patz said, Patz said. “But I’m excited to get my red hair back,” she added. Next fall, our own theater department perform will Fiddler on the Roof. Unfortunately, Katherine could not fit the musical block into her schedule for next year, but that means she Katherine Patz plays the role of Chava in Tulsa Theatre’s gets to watch her Fiddler on the Roof. Comets baseball looking to make a deep run at State BY JACKSON LAVARNWAY

Bishop Kelley baseball continued their successful season with yet another regional championship. After clobbering Southeast 19-2 in the 1st round, the Comets kept the momentum going into the 2nd round. In their 2nd round matchup against McAlester, BK got the 2-0 win behind another stellar pitching performance from senior Charlie Case, who pitched a complete game shutout. Case, who now has an 8-0 record this season, has developed into a dominating force on the mound for the

Comets. In the regional finals, the Comets secured their spot at the State tournament with a 7-3 win over Claremore. Led by the big bats of seniors Daniel DeSimone and Philip Scott, the Comets are sure to give opposing pitchers quite the challenge in the state tournament. The team is in high spirits and hope to carry their momentum from regionals into state, which begins May 12 in Yukon.

LADIES’ Choice Students debate the pros and cons of a Sadie Hawkins dance for the coming school year.

Who is Sadie Hawkins and why does her name elicit fear in girls hearts? Sadie Hawkins was a character in the Li’l Abner comic strip that ran from 1943 to 1977. In the strip, one day every year was named for her in which the unmarried women of the town chased the bachelors and married the ones they caught. You might want to invest in some comfortable running shoes, boys, because Bishop Kelley will likely have a Sadie Hawkins Dance next year.

BY BETH True to the idea of the comic, a Sadie Hawkins Dance is one in which the roles are reversed, and girls are the ones asking the boys to the dance. These dances are also called Ladies’ Choice, Morp (Prom backwards), or, in Dearborn, Michigan, the Sponge Dance. Although a Sadie Hawkins seems fun and casual, some people oppose it. In fact, Bishop Kelley’s Student Council has proposed the idea for the past few years but was met with resistance.

KEANEY “I think it’s a good idea in theory, but I don’t know if too many girls would do it,” Sean Flahive (11) said. However, others are very much in support of the idea. “Sadie Hawkins is good because it empowers the girls to be the one who asks, instead of the boys having to ask the girls for every dance,” Devon Sheehan (10) said. In response to the worry that girls would not participate, Mr. Oberste has put forth the idea of an incentive

to ask. If this incentive is put into effect, girls who ask within the first week of tickets going on sale can buy two tickets for the price of one. So, with this solution, would a Sadie Hawkins dance work at Bishop Kelley? If enough girls participate, next year could be the start of a fun tradition for the community. In addition, it empowers girls to adopt new roles and experience the excitement - and anxiety - of putting yourself out there.

What do you think? “It would give the girl more of a chance to go with who she wants to go with.” - Madeleine Humphrey (9) “We should do it because then the girls get to panic about asking the guys, and the guys get to sit back and enjoy the mayhem.” - Camilo Gonzalez (9) “I personally think that not a lot of girls would like it. And as far as ‘it’s time for the girls to ask the guys,’ only a few guys ask girls to Homecoming, and Sadie Hawkins would force girls to ask a guy just to be able to go.” - Mary McGough (10) “I’m curious about who the girls would pick.” - Valentin Danescu (10) “I think that is just another dance to add that a majority of the students won’t show up to.” - Josi Osentowski (11) “I haven’t gone to any dances, but you can bet anything I would have gone if a girl had asked me.” - Ryan Moore (11)
