POST INDUSTRIAL SITE MODIFICATION Guangzhou Transformations Studio
The design studio was run as a two week intensive in Guangzhou with students from RMIT and South China University of Technology (SCUT). The studio deals with a brown field site in the Nansha District of Guangzhou. The site is currently used by a sugar milling paper factory that is set to close down and consequently leave a polluted landscape. The factory site borders on a small village that is currently struggling from lack of jobs and connectivity to the city. Nansha has been identified as having a key role in deepening economic cooperation with Hong Kong and Macau to drive the liberalisation of trade. The concept revolved around the idea of coexistence. It aimed to encourage the migration of different species and events inorder to create different types of exhibitions and transform the site into a new ecology. In order to do this the proposal let water into the site to allow nature to coexist with the built environment. The buildings were reprogrammed to create exhibition spaces that connected with bridges over a canal network. The different spaces allow nature to coexist with humans at different levels of interaction. The wetland will filter water and re-mediate soil to create habitats for different species.

ST KILDA MARINA RESERVE UPGRADE Landscape Architecture Professional Practice
A $50,000 budget was allocated to redesign a portion of the St Kilda Marina Reserve. The project required making revisions to the original design documentation produced by Pollen Studio for the City of Port Phillip. All drawing modifications and additions were required to follow the Australian standards. The Marina upgrade will introduce a cycle park to bridge the gap between the young children’s playground and the advanced skate park. The cycle park will feature a mock road with street signs, pedestrian crossings, a bridge, and varying surface textures. It will create a safe environment for children to learn to ride and join onto the skate park for those who would like a challenge.
LS102 / LS112 / LS122
In covering the perimeter of the grassed area, the cycle park will encourage users to activate the currently underutilised western edge. The north entry to the site has a build up of sand that has been blown from the adjacent beach. In order to prevent sand from covering the cycle path and creating a hard surface to ride over, a retaining wall will be built along the periphery of the beach. Additional planting will also be placed along this boundary to further limit sand displacement.

This project aims to create a systematised framework that: minimises the polluting nature of industry by introducing natural systems to reduce pollution and pathogen presence. The neighbourhood and surrounding areas of Montebello were selected as a site due to the density of different pollutants and mixture of industrial, residential, and open space areas.

As pollution affects the area on a range of levels, the project called for an in-depth analysis of prospective design approaches for localised pollution control. The framework works through horizontal and vertical fields to generate environmentally and physically healthy living environments. In effect, creating a dynamic system that impacts change through the strata of ‘liveable space’ within Montebello.

The city of Los Angeles is a sprawling micro climate, home to over 660 miles of multi lane freeways, the largest container port on the west coast of America, and vast transportation systems that move goods across the continent. Although the city has taken steps in the past decade to improve pollution levels it still finds itself as one of the worst polluting localities in the world, violating federal health standards for ozone and particulate matter on average 122 days a year (LA Times 2014).
