Welcome to Limerick for the 5th Richard Harris Interna'onal Film Fes'val. Just over five very short years ago Rob Gill had an idea for an interna onal film fes val based in Limerick City. #RHIFF was born from that idea. Our first fes val in 2013 was a modest affair over 1.5 days with 14 screenings, including the Harris retrospec ve screening of “This Spor ng Life” on the 50th anniversary of its release. The fes val has grown in leaps and bounds in the interim period, with Sylvia Moore becoming Crea ve Director in 2014. We have had a very evenNul 12 months since #RHIFF2016, travelling to The American Film Market in November, March saw us a6end Dingle Film Fes val, April - Newport Beach Film Fes val, Orange Co., California, with an extended program of Irish short films recommended by RHIFF. May - we were in Cannes for the 2nd annual RHIFF Industry Party, June 2nd was our Women in Film screening, in July we headed to the Fleadh in Galway and in September represented the fes val at the Prime me Emmy’s. Since we last met, there have been a number of significant developments for RHIFF. Following months of mee ngs, presenta ons to councillors and council staff, we are delighted to announce Limerick City & County Council have come on board as a sponsor of this fes val honouring one of Limerick’s most famous actors - Richard Harris. As well as ShiP 72 - our VOD (video on demand) and technology sponsor - Limerick City and County Council are one of our gold sponsors. In April, long me friend of the fes val Mr. Simon McGuire joined the board of RHIFF and the amalgama on of RHIFF and LFF (The Limerick Film Fes val) was confirmed. A new student category was opened in fes val compe on and each April there will now be a RHIFF/LFF event. In 2017 RHIFF become an Irish Film & Television Academy affiliated fes val, consequently films screened at RHIFF are now eligible for considera on for IFTAS. This year we will screen 115 shorts and features (up from 60 in 2016) from all over the world including from Brazil, Spain, Iran, Australia and the US. Our features contain a li6le bit of something for everyone and range from the European Premiere of a South African horror to a Scandi-Noir thriller, US and South African romance and the best in Irish drama and comedy. Our Harris retrospec ve this year is 'Cry the Beloved Country and is preceded by a TV drama pilot. Our other events include Grammy contender and Golden Globe nominee Brian Byrne will perform a very special version of his album Golden Hair. Following on the success of our inaugural script read last year, US director-writer Maria Donohue will hold a script reading of her powerful and provoca ve new screenplay 'For the Good of the Child'. We also are holding our first 'culture in the castle' event. We would like to thank you for your con nued support of the fes val and are so glad to see old friends return again this year and welcome those of you who are visi ng us for the first me.

GOLDENHAIR

When deciding which musical event to add this year considera on was given as to how to incorporate Richard Harris’s renowned love of poetry and music into one evening. The answer came in the form of Brian Byrne’s Goldenhair. As ar st in residence for the RTE Concert Orchestra Brian wrote music to accompany Ireland’s best known literary genius - James Joyce. Specifically his poetry en tled Chamber Music. Knowing Joyce hated the name chosen by his publishers for his poetry, Brian en tled his composi ons “Goldenhair”. What we par culary loved is the variety and complexity of the arrangements, which will have you enthralled without even realising you are reci ng Joyce. Jamie Harris who will narrate with acclaimed Irish actor Patrick Bergin is no stranger to performing poetry musically having appeared on his father Richard Harris' album of poetry and songs "I, in the Membership of my Days" together with his brothers Jared Harris and Damian Harris at the tender age of 11. Brian is joined on stage at UCH, Limerick by interna onally renowned musicians and vocalists. We wish to thank Limerick City & County Council and University Concert Hall for their support for this wonderful evening of music and prose. RICHARD HARRIS as THE BULL McCABE On display this evening in the foyer is painting of Richard Harris by local Limerick Artist Anne Fitzgerald; Anne is one of Ireland's acclaimed artists, known for her religious masterpieces and typically Irish faces and landscapes. Her studios and gallery are based in Mungret College.
