2019 Festival Programme

Page 1

October 22nd – 28th 2019

A welcome from the organisers Welcome to the 7th edition of the Richard Harris International Film Festival – our most expansive and most ambitious programme yet. In 2019, our eclectic programme contains 150 shorts and features selected from submissions received from 30 countries – including World, European and Irish Premieres. We will be screening films - both narrative and documentary - from: US, UK, Ukraine, Turkey, Israel, Iran, Spain, India, Nepal, Germany, France, Italy, Switzerland, Malaysia and of course Ireland. Among many highlights in this year’s festival is the world premiere of Brian Reddin’s documentary on Richard Harris - A Man Called Harris, followed by a Q&A with the director and documentary participants. The documentary features Jim Sheridan, Tom Berenger, Ridley Scott, Robert Duvall among many others. William O’Reilly, a life-long friend of Richard, is also hosting a special event in memory of Richard and this year’s retrospective is Trojan Eddie. There will also be a screening of Terry McMahon’s The Prizefighter - a searing documentary on the life of Middleweight boxing contender ‘Spike’ O’Sullivan, followed by Q&A with the director and subject. Terry is also returning to host his exceptional master-class again this year. We are also delighted to welcome back Moe Dunford, who will be doing a Q&A following the screening of his film, the critically acclaimed The Dig.

A very special event is the RHIFF19 Culture Scene @ 1314 (an afternoon of Film, Music, Literature and Performance) which includes a screening of Evelyn, directed by Orlando von Einsiedel (Oscar winning director of The White Helmets). This event is dedicated to the memory of Timothy Moore – with proceeds going to Limerick Marine Search & Rescue and features Timothy’s poetry. This year sees the launch of iMET (Interactive Media Entertainment Technology) Summit (running 22nd -23rd of October in the Engine, Cecil Street). iMET is a new stand-alone media technology summit, that will precede the Harris festival, and will explore disruption in media and entertainment technology. This year, the theme will be ‘The Post-Truth World’ and will feature a screening of the documentary Belling-Cat: Truth in a post-Truth world, followed by a panel discussion with experts in the area of disinformation and fake news. iMET will feature an exciting and innovative VR/AR experience, in association with a number of Ireland’s leading VR content providers and creators - Immersive VR Education and Simotion. iMET includes our inaugural New Media Official Selections. iMET will also see the launch of Entertainment Oxygen - a global resource network for entertainment professionals to showcase creative talents, to socially connect, and collaborate. Another highlight is the screening of Brownbag’s documentary on the making of the charming Angela’s Christmas followed by a Q&A with Malachy McCourt and director Damien O’Connor on Tuesday the 22nd of October, which will kick off our week of cinematic and technology events. The festival wouldn’t be the same without our famous afterparties, which will offer a great opportunity for festivalgoers and visitors to network or just unwind and meet stars from the silver screen. The highlight of the week, as always, is our red-carpet, black-tie Awards night gala – the only black-tie event for the Irish film industry this year. We are delighted to be welcoming film-makers, content creators and cinema fans to the gateway to the Wild Atlantic Way. We look forward to seeing our old friends return and to meeting new friends. Yours in film, Rob, Sylvia, Zeb

A MAN CALLED HARRIS Extended Preview

Documentary, (Ireland) Dearg Films (producer)

Director Brian Reddin Followed by panel discussion

DATE: Thursday 24th October TIME: 19.00pm VENUE: Dance Limerick, 1-2 St. John’s Square Richard Harris was celebrated as much for his colourful life off screen, as for his many memorable roles on screen, and his was a life well lived. He made over 70 movies, won a Golden Globe and an award at Cannes for Best Actor. He also won a Grammy and had an international hit with his rendition of McArthur Park, lamenting how someone left a cake out in the rain. He was an actor who dominated any film he was in and held his own against Brando in MUTINY ON THE BOUNTY and Eastwood in UNFORGIVEN. Between those two career highs he starred in CAMELOT, A MAN CALLED HORSE, THE FIELD and played Dumbledore in the HARRY POTTER series. He wore his Irish heritage as a badge of pride and talked of Ireland and Limerick every chance he got. He laid the groundwork for everyone who came after him. Before anyone did anything, Harris did everything. Without Harris there would be no Gabriel Byrne, Liam Neeson or Colin Farrell. He led the way. He paved the path for them all. His was the career that Irish actors wanted to emulate and his life off screen appeared just as desirable. Featuring exclusive interviews with some of Hollywood’s elite, including Clint Eastwood, Daniel Radcliffe, Robert Duvall, Ridley Scott, Jim Sheridan, Gabriel Byrne, Patrick Bergin and Stephen Rea, this documentary explores Harris’ fascinating and colourful life both on and off screen.

The Documentary Producer and Director: Brian Reddin. Director of Photography: Gerry MacArthur. Editor: Dave Dillon. The documentary is funded by TG4 and the BAI.
