Simon Thomsett Chief Executive, Fairfield Halls It gives me great pleasure to introduce the new season of orchestral music at Fairfield. We have a wonderful programme of great music from the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and our resident orchestra the London Mozart Players. There is much to look forward to as these two great orchestras make the very most of the unique acoustic qualities of the Concert Hall at Fairfield. I’m sure they will continue to enrich, entertain and thrill us with some of the finest music ever written. I am also particularly delighted to welcome the amazing Aurora Orchestra to Fairfield for the first of what I hope will be many visits. They help us celebrate the centenary of Benjamin Britten’s birth with a special concert of his documentary film music on 10 November, I urge you not to miss this appearance of one of the UK’s orchestras of the moment playing in one of the nation’s finest concert halls. You can save money with a Fairfield Subscription Package. Subscription Series concerts are highlighted in the brochure. The more subscription concerts you book in one go, the more you save on standard ticket prices. Subscription Series and standard ticket prices for can be found on page 31. Three or more Subscription Series concerts can be booked from 29th April 2013 while single concerts can be booked from 3rd May 2013. A UNIQUE CONCERT... COMING TO FAIRFIELD ON SATURDAY 15 JUNE 2013
LISTEN TO THIS SQUAREPUSHER - CHARLES HAZLEWOOD - SOUTHBANK SINFONIA On Saturday 15 June 2013, 7.30pm at the Fairfield Halls in Croydon, a unique musical collaboration will present a single performance of a new piece of music called ‘Listen To This’. Charles Hazlewood has brought together electronic artist, Tom Jenkinson, aka Squarepusher and the Southbank Sinfonia to create a thrilling musical hybrid that will create a unique moment in music history. Squarepusher’s latest release, Ufabulum, is generated entirely from digital programming and it is the starting point for this new work. Arranger Peter Riley will be creating bespoke arrangements of the music which takes the building blocks of electronic dance music and then applies them across the immense tonal palette of the orchestra, so be ready for a whiteknuckle ride of a performance at Fairfield Halls.

Charles Hazlewood explains the starting point for Listen To This…”The idea for it began about seven or eight years ago when I did the Urban Classics project which was a determined attempt to find common ground between the gritty form of British Hip Hop known as ‘Grime’ and an orchestra. For years I’ve been exploring music at the hinterland of what might be described as the orchestral canon and at the same time railing against some of the previous, rather saccharine, attempts at so called ‘fusion’. It always seemed to me that there was another way which would be born out of rigour, out of brave determination to find a new hybrid that might celebrate the essence of, in that case, what Grime was and what an orchestra can do. Running parallel to this, Tom Jenkinson (Squarepusher), is someone I admire enormously and with whom I have very intense and very long conversations about music. We have an enormous amount of passions in common: about the visceral power of music, about the power of music to change lives and the fact that it’s the most universal language that we have, beyond any dialect or tongue. We began to see that there was a clear vision that there must be interesting and really fertile common ground to be explored between his form of very high octane electronic dance music and the potential of an orchestra. That was the starting point and it took us a long time to get to the position where we are now. An overarching ambition for the whole project is that a multitude of people who love music but who perhaps have never encountered an orchestra before will have their first experience of the visceral charge of a full orchestra as part of this experience. Hopefully, they will then begin a journey which will grow over time and see them coming back over time to try out other things.”
‘the creation of a new musical language’ Charles Hazlewood …and it’s all happening in Croydon! Tickets: Adults £17.50, Under 25s £10, Schools/Groups of 10+ £8.50

ROSSINI MOZART SCHUBERT
Overture: The Italian Girl in Algiers Symphony No. 40 in G minor, K550 Symphony No. 6 in C major
The London Mozart Players opens its 2013/14 season with a fizzing, energetic programme of orchestral favourites, each one a tour de force. Rossini’s opera The Italian Girl in Algiers is the first of his opera comedies, and this sparkling overture perfectly sets the mood for the light entertainment in an exotic setting that follows in the opera. With its dramatic and mysterious opening, Mozart’s 40th Symphony is one of the composer’s most enduring. The symphony was the second of three ‘final’ works written by the composer only a few years before his tragically untimely death. The programme concludes with Schubert’s bold Symphony No. 6, written by the 21-year old composer as a musical nod to the ‘Rossini fever’ that had hit Vienna. 8

With subjects ranging from postage stamps to pacifism, the abolition of the slave trade to the electrification of the London–Portsmouth railway, the films are wonderfully made and fascinating historical documents. Britten’s music brilliantly reflects, amplifies and underpins the screen images with scores of rich variety, invention and no little wit. We are delighted to welcome the hugely talented British clarinettist Mark Simpson, winner of the 2006 BBC Young Musician of the Year Competition, who performs a celebrated piece written during Mozart’s miraculously inspired final year. The Don Giovanni Overture provides a thrilling introduction to the conflicting comedy and tragedy explored in what is often described as Mozart’s greatest operatic work. Ginastera was one of the most famous Argentinian composers, whose pupils included the popular tango composer Piazzolla. This concerto for orchestra is a striking example of the composer’s skills, a test of virtuosity for all string players! The concert concludes with an introduction to the LMP’s season-long celebration of Schubert’s ‘local’ connections. Schumann’s Violin Concerto was one of the very last pieces he wrote, but only received its première in 1937 after its dedicatee, the violinist Joachim, refused to allow it to be performed. POULENC HAYDN
Sinfonietta Piano Concerto No. 11 in D Aubade Symphony 104, ‘London’
POULENC HAYDN
Howard Shelley returns to Fairfield Halls with his second LMP programme; this a charming and unusual combination of Haydn and Poulenc. Haydn was the great classical symphonist who did more than any other composer before him to push the boundaries of the form. The great London symphony was the final of six written for the composer’s second visit to London, by which time he was one of the most celebrated composers in Europe. One common thread that links both Haydn and Poulenc is perhaps their use of humour in their compositions. Poulenc was a member of Les Six, the group of six composers in the 1920s that swept aside the styles of Wagner and Impressionism, bringing strength and simplicity to new music. The Aubade, a love song or poem evoking daybreak, is scored for piano and 18 other instruments, whilst the Sinfonietta is a ‘sweet and sour’ work with overtones of romanticism, underscored by darker emotions which are never far from the surface. £12 - £31.50.
